Andromeda II (And II) has been known for a few decades but only recently observations have unveiled new properties of this dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The presence of two stellar populations, the bimodal star formation history (SFH) and an unusual rotation velocity of And II put strong constrains on its formation and evolution. Following Lokas et al. (2014), we propose a detailed model to explain the main properties of And II involving (1) a gas-rich major merger between two dwarf galaxies at high redshift in the field and (2) a close interaction with M31 about 5 Gyr ago. The model is based on N-body/hydrodynamical simulations including gas dynamics, star formation and feedback. One simulation is designed to reproduce the gas-rich major merger explaining the origin of stellar populations and the SFH. Other simulations are used to study the effects of tidal forces and the ram pressure stripping during the interaction between And II and M31. The model successfully reproduces the SFH of And II including the properties of stellar populations, its morphology, kinematics and the lack of gas. Further improvements to the model are possible via joint modelling of all processes and better treatment of baryonic physics.
Our Galaxy and the nearby Andromeda galaxy (M31) are the most massive members of the Local Group, and they seem to be a bound pair, despite the uncertainties on the relative motion of the two galaxies. A number of studies have shown that the two galaxies will likely undergo a close approach in the next 4$-$5 Gyr. We used direct $N$-body simulations to model this interaction to shed light on the future of the Milky Way - Andromeda system and for the first time explore the fate of the two supermassive black holes (SMBHs) that are located at their centers. We investigated how the uncertainties on…
Prolate rotation (i.e. rotation around the long axis) has been reported for two Local Group dwarf galaxies: Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal satellite of M31, and Phoenix, a transition type dwarf galaxy. The prolate rotation may be an exceptional indicator of a past major merger between dwarf galaxies. We showed that this type of rotation cannot be obtained in the tidal stirring scenario, in which the satellite is transformed from disky to spheroidal by tidal forces of the host galaxy. However, we successfully reproduced the observed Andromeda II kinematics in controlled, self-consistent simul…
According to our current knowledge about physical and dynamical properties of the Milky Way-M31 system, it seems likely that these two galaxies will collide and eventually merge in a time very sensitive to initial conditions. Using the HiGPUs code, we have performed several numerical simulations to study the dynamics of the system, trying to define the role of indeterminacy in the present day observed relative velocities of the two galaxies and the time of the merger. At the same time, we have followed the dynamics of the two massive black holes sitting in the galactic centers, to check (withi…
Although the proximity of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) offers an opportunity to understand how mergers affect galaxies, uncertainty remains about M31's most important mergers. Previous studies focused individually on the giant stellar stream or the impact of M32 on M31's disk, thereby suggesting many substantial satellite interactions. Yet models of M31's disk heating and the similarity between the stellar populations of different tidal substructures in M31's outskirts both suggested a single large merger. M31's stellar halo (its outer low-surface-brightness regions) is built up from the tidal d…
Recent observations of our neighbouring galaxy M31 have revealed that its disk was shaped by widespread events. The evidence for this includes the high dispersion ($V/σ$ $\le$ 3) of stars older than 2 Gyr, and a global star formation episode, 2-4 Gyr ago. Using the modern hydrodynamical code, GIZMO, we have performed 300 high-resolution simulations to explore the extent to which these observed properties can be explained by a single merger. We find that the observed M31 disk resembles models having experienced a 4:1 merger, in which the nuclei coalesced 1.8-3 Gyr ago, and where the first passa…
We analyze the kinematics as a function of stellar age for Andromeda (M31) mass analogs from the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulation. We divide the star particles into four age groups: less than 1 Gyr, 1 to 5 Gyr, 5 to 10 Gyr, and greater 10 Gyr, and compare the kinematics of these groups to that of the neutral gas cells. We calculate rotation curves for the stellar and gaseous components of each analog from 2 kpc to 20 kpc from the center of mass. We find that the lag, or asymmetric drift (AD), between the gas rotation curve and the stellar rotation curve on average increases with stellar ag…
The Giant Stellar Stream (GSS) is a prominent tidal feature in the halo of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), representing the ongoing destruction of a satellite galaxy. In this paper, we investigate the formation of the GSS through detailed numerical simulations of the tidal disruption of a progenitor system. Assuming that the stream was created in a single merger event between M31 and a dwarf spheroidal galaxy with stellar mass of $10^{9}M_{\odot}$, we successfully reproduce the dynamical properties of the GSS. As the metallicity distribution along the stream has been well determined from the obser…

As part of the Z-PAndAS Keck II DEIMOS survey of resolved stars in our neighboring galaxy, Andromeda (M31), we have built up a unique data set of measured velocities and chemistries for thousands of stars in the Andromeda stellar halo, particularly probing its rich and complex substructure. In this contribution, we will discuss the structural, dynamical and chemical properties of Andromeda's dwarf spheroidal galaxies, and how there is no observational evidence for a difference in the evolutionary histories of those found on and off M31's vast plane of satellites. We will also discuss a possibl…
We focus on the evidence of a past minor merger discovered in the halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). Previous N-body studies have enjoyed moderate success in producing the observed giant stellar stream (GSS) and stellar shells in M31's halo. The observed distribution of stars in the halo of M31 shows an asymmetric surface brightness profile across the GSS; however, the effect of the morphology of the progenitor galaxy on the internal structure of the GSS requires further investigation in theoretical studies. To investigate the physical connection between the characteristic surface brightness …
We obtain a magnitude-limited sample of Andromeda (M 31) disc PNe with chemical abundance estimated through the direct detection of the [OIII] 4363 $\mathring{\mathrm A}$ line. This leads to $205$ and $200$ PNe with oxygen and argon abundances respectively. We find that high- and low-extinction M 31 disc PNe have statistically distinct argon and oxygen abundance distributions. In the radial range $2-30$ kpc, the older low-extinction disc PNe are metal-poorer on average with a slightly positive radial oxygen abundance gradient ($0.006 \pm 0.003$ dex/kpc) and slightly negative for argon ($-0.005…
The survey of planetary nebulae in Andromeda (M31) VII. Predictions of a major merger simulation model compared with chemodynamical data of the disc and inner halo substructures
Our Galaxy and the nearby Andromeda Galaxy (M31) form a bound system, even though the relative velocity vector of M31 is currently not well constrained. Their orbital motion is highly dependent on the initial conditions, but all the reliable scenarios imply a first close approach in the next 3-5 Gyrs. In our study, we simulate this interaction via direct N-body integration, using the HiGPUs code. Our aim is to investigate the dependence of the time of the merger on the physical and dynamical properties of the system. Finally, we study the dynamical evolution of the two Supermassive Black Holes…
We analyze the merger and assembly histories of Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31)-like galaxies to quantify how, and how often, disk galaxies of this mass can survive recent major mergers (stellar mass ratio $\ge$ 1:4). For this, we use the cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulation TNG50 and identify 198 analog galaxies, selected based on their $z=0$ stellar mass ($10^{10.5-11.2} {\rm M_{\odot}}$), disky stellar morphology and local environment. Firstly, major mergers are common: 85 per cent (168) of MW/M31-like galaxies in TNG50 have undergone at least one major merger across their life…
Stellar kinematics and metallicity are key to exploring formation scenarios for galactic disks and halos. In this work, we characterized the relationship between kinematics and photometric metallicity along the line-of-sight to M31's disk. We combined optical HST/ACS photometry from the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey with Keck/DEIMOS spectra from the Spectroscopic and Photometric Landscape of Andromeda's Stellar Halo (SPLASH) survey. The resulting sample of 3512 individual red giant branch stars spans 4-19 projected kpc, making it a useful probe of both the disk and inner…
We present deep imaging of the ultra-diffuse Andromeda XIX dwarf galaxy from the Advance Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope which resolves its stellar populations to below the oldest main sequence turn-off. We derive a full star formation history for the galaxy using MATCH, and find no evidence of star formation in the past 8 Gyr. We calculate a quenching time of $τ_{90}=9.7\pm0.2$~Gyr, suggesting Andromeda~XIX ceased forming stars very early on. This early quenching, combined with its extremely large half-light radius, low density dark matter halo and lower than expected metalli…
In some galaxies, the stars orbiting the supermassive black hole take the form of an eccentric nuclear disk, in which every star is on a coherent, apsidally-aligned orbit. The most famous example of an eccentric nuclear disk is the double nucleus of Andromeda, and there is strong evidence for many more in the local universe. Despite their apparent ubiquity however, a dynamical explanation for their longevity has remained a mystery: differential precession should wipe out large-scale apsidal-alignment on a short timescale. Here we identify a new dynamical mechanism which stabilizes eccentric nu…
The Andromeda (M31) galaxy displays several substructures in its inner halo whose origin as remnants of accreted satellites or perturbations of the pre-existing disc are encoded in the properties of their stellar populations (SPs), leaving traces on their deep [OIII] 5007 Åplanetary nebulae luminosity functions (PNLFs). By characterizing the morphology of the PNLFs, we constrain their origin. From our 54 sq. deg. deep narrow-band [OIII] survey of M31, we identify planetary nebulae (PNe) in the M31 disc and six major inner-halo substructures - the Giant Stream, North East Shelf, G1-Clump, North…
We use a large sample of $\sim 350,000$ galaxies constructed by combining the UKIDSS UDS, VIDEO/CFHT-LS, UltraVISTA/COSMOS and GAMA survey regions to probe the major merging histories of massive galaxies ($>10^{10}\ \mathrm{M}_\odot$) at $0.005 < z < 3.5$. We use a method adapted from that presented in Lopez-Sanjuan et al. (2014) using the full photometric redshift probability distributions, to measure pair $\textit{fractions}$ of flux-limited, stellar mass selected galaxy samples using close-pair statistics. The pair fraction is found to weakly evolve as $\propto (1+z)^{0.8}$ with no dependen…
The age-velocity dispersion relation is an important tool to understand the evolution of the disc of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) in comparison with the Milky Way. We use Planetary Nebulae (PNe) to obtain the age-velocity dispersion relation in different radial bins of the M31 disc. We separate the observed PNe sample based on their extinction values into two distinct age populations. The observed velocities of our high- and low-extinction PNe, which correspond to higher and lower mass progenitors respectively, are fitted in de-projected elliptical bins to obtain their rotational velocities, $V_…
The Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey is a survey of $>400$ square degrees centered on the Andromeda (M31) and Triangulum (M33) galaxies that has provided the most extensive panorama of a $L_\star$ galaxy group to large projected galactocentric radii. Here, we collate and summarise the current status of our knowledge of the substructures in the stellar halo of M31, and discuss connections between these features. We estimate that the 13 most distinctive substructures were produced by at least 5 different accretion events, all in the last 3 or 4 Gyrs. We suggest that a few of the substructures…
Numerical simulations have shown that massive dark matter haloes, which today host galaxy clusters, assemble their mass over time alternating periods of quiescent accretion and phases of rapid growth associated with major merger episodes. Observations of such events in clusters can provide insights on the astrophysical processes that characterise the properties of the intra-cluster medium, as well as the gravitational processes that contribute to their assembly. It is therefore of prime interest to devise a fast and reliable way of detecting such perturbed systems. We present a novel approach …
The Great Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is the nexus of the near-far galaxy evolution connection and a principal data point for near-field cosmology. Due to its proximity (780 kpc), M31 can be resolved into individual stars like the Milky Way (MW). Unlike the MW, we have the advantage of a global view of M31, enabling M31 to be observed with techniques that also apply to more distant galaxies. Moreover, recent evidence suggests that M31 may have survived a major merger within the last several Gyr, shaping the morphology of its stellar halo and triggering a starburst, while leaving the stellar disk la…
We expand our previous study on the relationship between changes in the orientation of the angular momentum vector of dark matter haloes ("spin flips") and changes in their mass (Bett & Frenk 2012), to cover the full range of halo masses in a simulation cube of length 100 $h^{-1}$ Mpc. Since strong disturbances to a halo (such as might be indicated by a large change in the spin direction) are likely also to disturb the galaxy evolving within, spin flips could be a mechanism for galaxy morphological transformation without involving major mergers. We find that 35% of haloes have, at some point i…
We present an analysis of the proper motion of the Andromeda galaxy (M31), based on the Early Third Data Release of the Gaia mission. We use the Gaia photometry to select young blue main sequence stars, and apply several quality cuts to obtain clean samples of these tracers. After correcting the proper motion measurements for the internal rotation of the M31 disk motion, we derive an apparent motion of 52.5 +/- 5.8 muas/yr with respect to the Gaia reference frame, or 61.9 +/- 9.7 muas/yr after applying a zero-point correction determined from quasars within 20 degrees from M31 and a correction …
We analyze in detail the spatial distribution and kinematic properties of two different stellar populations in Andromeda II (And II) dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We obtained their detailed surface density maps, together with their radial density profiles. The two populations differ not only in age and metallicity, but also in their spatial distribution and kinematics. Old stars ($\gtrsim 11$ Gyr) follow a round distribution well fitted by truncated density profiles. These stars rotate around the projected optical major axis of the galaxy with line-of-sight velocities $v_{los}(r_h) = 16 \pm 3$ km s…
Theoretical models have suggested an evolutionary model for quasars, in which most of luminous quasars are triggered by major mergers. It is also postulated that reddening as well as powerful outflows indicate an early phase of activity, close to the merger event. We test this model on a sample of quasars with powerful low ionization outflows seen in broad Iron absorption lines (FeLoBAL). This sample of objects show strong reddening in the optical and fast ($\sim$0.1c) high column density outflows. We present HST WFC3/IR F160W imaging of 10 FeLoBAL host galaxies at redshifts z$\sim$0.9 ($λ_{re…
Based upon a metallicity selection, we identify a significant sub-population of the inner halo globular clusters in the Andromeda Galaxy which we name the Dulais Structure. It is distinguished as a co-rotating group of 10-20 globular clusters which appear to be kinematically distinct from, and on average more metal-poor than, the majority of the inner halo population. Intriguingly, the orbital axis of this Dulais Structure is closely aligned with that of the younger accretion event recently identified using a sub-population of globular clusters in the outer halo of Andromeda, and this is stron…
We present a new, detailed analysis of the morphologies and molecular gas fractions for a complete sample of 65 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) from the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) using high resolution $I$-band images from The Hubble Space Telescope, the University of Hawaii 2.2m Telescope and the Pan-STARRS1 Survey. Our classification scheme includes single undisturbed galaxies, minor mergers, and major mergers, with the latter divided into five distinct stages from pre-first pericenter passage to final nuclear coalescence. We find that major mergers of molecular…
Halo Occupation Distributions of Moderate X-ray AGNs through Major and Minor Mergers in a $Λ$-CDM Cosmology
The structural properties of individual dark matter haloes, including shape, spin, concentration, and substructure, are linked to the halo's growth history, but the exact connection between the two is unclear. One open question, in particular, is the effect of major mergers on halo structure. We have performed a large set of simulations of binary equal-mass mergers between isolated haloes with various density profiles, to map out the relationship between the initial conditions and merger parameters and the structure of the final remnant. In this paper we describe our initial set-up and analysi…
