Massive galaxies at higher redshifts ($\emph{z}$ $>$ 2) show different characteristics from their local counterparts: They are compact and most likely have a disk. In this study, we trace the evolution of local massive galaxies by performing a detailed morphological analysis, namely, fitting single Sérsic profiles and performing bulge+disk decompositions. We analyze $\sim$ 250 massive galaxies selected from all CANDELS fields (COSMOS, UDS, EGS, GOODS-South and GOODS-North). We confirm that both star-forming and quiescent galaxies increase their sizes significantly from $\emph{z}$ $\approx$ 2.5 to the present day. The global Sérsic index of quiescent galaxies increases over time (from $n$ $\approx$ 2.5 to $n$ $>$ 4), while that of star-forming galaxies remains roughly constant ($n$ $\approx$ 2.5). By decomposing galaxy profiles into bulge+disk components, we find that massive galaxies at high redshift have prominent stellar disks, which are also evident from visual inspection of the images. By $z$ $\approx$ 0.5, the majority of the disks disappear and massive quiescent galaxies begin to resemble the local elliptical galaxies. Star-forming galaxies have lower bulge-to-total ratios ($B/T$) than their quiescent counterparts at each redshift bin. The bulges of star-forming and quiescent galaxies follow different evolutionary histories, while their disks evolve similarly. We conclude that major mergers, along with minor mergers, have played a crucial role in the significant size increase of high-\emph{z} galaxies and the destruction of their massive and large-scale disks.
Globular clusters (GCs) are thought to be ancient relics from the early formative phase of galaxies, although their physical origin remains uncertain. GCs are most numerous around massive elliptical galaxies, where they can exhibit a broad colour dispersion, suggesting a wide metallicity spread. Here, we show that many thousands of compact and massive (~5$\times$10$^{\rm 3}-$3$\times$ 10$^{\rm 6} M_{\odot}$) star clusters have formed at an approximately steady rate over, at least, the past ~1Gyr around NGC 1275, the central giant elliptical galaxy of the Perseus cluster. Beyond ~1Gyr, these st…
We present hydrodynamical N-body models which demonstrate that elliptical galaxies can transform into S0s by acquiring a disc. In particular, we show that the merger with a massive gas-rich satellite can lead to the formation of a baryonic disc around an elliptical. We model the elliptical as a massive, compact galaxy which could be observed as a 'red nugget' in the high-z universe. This scenario contrasts with existing S0 formation scenarios in the literature in two important ways. First, the progenitor is an elliptical galaxy whereas scenarios in the literature typically assume a spiral prog…
Elliptical galaxies today appear aligned with the large-scale structure of the Universe, but it is still an open question when they acquire this alignment. Observational data is currently insufficient to provide constraints on the time evolution of intrinsic alignments, and hence existing models range from assuming that galaxies gain some primordial alignment at formation, to suggesting that they react instantaneously to tidal interactions with the large-scale structure. Using the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN, we measure the relative alignments between the major axes of g…
We present an analysis of the galactocentric distributions of the "normal" and peculiar "91bg-like" subclasses of 109 supernovae (SNe) Ia, and study the global parameters of their elliptical hosts. The galactocentric distributions of the SN subclasses are consistent with each other, and with the radial light distribution of host stellar populations, when excluding bias against central SNe. Among the global parameters, only the distributions of u-r colours and ages are inconsistent significantly between the ellipticals of different SN Ia subclasses: the normal SN hosts are on average bluer/youn…
We present the first spectroscopic confirmation of an ultra-massive galaxy at redshift z>3 using data from Keck-NIRSPEC, VLT-Xshooter, and GTC-Osiris. We detect strong [OIII] and Ly$α$ emission, and weak [OII], CIV, and HeII, placing C1-23152 at a spectroscopic redshift of $z_{spec}$=3.351. The modeling of the emission-line corrected spectral energy distribution results in a best-fit stellar mass of $M_{*}=3.1^{+0.6}_{-0.7}\times10^{11} M_{\odot}$, a star-formation rate of <7 $M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$, and negligible dust extinction. The stars appear to have formed in a short intense burst ~300-500 …
Stellar streams are ubiquitous in the Galactic halo and they can be used to improve our understanding of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way as a whole. The so-called Monoceros Ring might have been the result of satellite accretion. Guglielmo et al. have used N-body simulations to search for the progenitor of this structure. Their analysis shows that, if the Ring has a dwarf galaxy progenitor, it might be found in the background of one out of eight specific areas in the sky. Here, we use Gaia DR2 data to perform a systematic exploration aimed at confirming or rejecting this remarkable…
To date, the question of which progenitor channel can reproduce the observed rate of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) remains unresolved, with the single and double degenerate scenarios remaining the leading contenders. The former implies a large population of hot accreting white dwarfs with photospheric temperatures of T ~ 10^5-10^6 K during some part of their accretion history. We show that in early-type galaxies, a population of accreting white dwarfs large enough to reproduce the SN Ia rate would contribute significantly to the ionizing UV radiation expected from the stellar population. For mea…
We study whether dry merger-driven size growth of massive elliptical galaxies depends on their initial structural concentration, and analyse the validity of the homology hypothesis for virial mass determination in massive ellipticals grown by dry mergers. High-resolution simulations of a few realistic merger trees, starting with compact progenitors of different structural concentrations (Sérsic indices n), show that galaxy growth has little dependence on the initial Sérsic index (larger n leads to slightly larger size growth), and depends more on other particulars of the merger history. We sho…
We address the nature and origin of Super Star Clusters (SSCs) discovered by Holtzman et al. (1992) within a radius of $\sim$$5\,\rm kpc$ from the center of NGC 1275, the giant elliptical galaxy at the center of the Perseus Cluster. We show that, in contrast with the much more numerous population of SSCs subsequently discovered up to $\sim$$30\,\rm kpc$ from the center of this galaxy, the central SSC population have maximal masses an order of magnitude higher and a mass function with a shallower power-law slope. Furthermore, whereas the outer SSC population have ages spanning a few $\rm Myr$ t…
We apply stellar population synthesis analysis to obtain spatially-resolved archaeological inferences for a large sample of "red and dead" Elliptical galaxies (Classical Ellipticals; CLEs) from the MaNGA/SDSS-IV DR15 survey. From their 2D stellar light and mass maps, we explore the differences between the radial mass and light distributions in the rest-frame bands $g,$ $r,$ and $i$ as functions of look-back time, $t_{\rm lb}$, or redshift, $z$. We characterize these differences through the ratios between the following mass- and light-derived global properties: sizes, concentrations, and effect…
We present the formation of a Kinematically Decoupled Core (KDC) in an elliptical galaxy, resulting from a major merger simulation of two disk galaxies. We show that although the two progenitor galaxies are initially following a prograde orbit, strong reactive forces during the merger can cause a short-lived change of their orbital spin; the two progenitors follow a retrograde orbit right before their final coalescence. This results in a central kinematic decoupling and the formation of a large-scale (~2 kpc radius) counter-rotating core (CRC) at the center of the final elliptical-like merger …
To unveil a progenitor of the Andromeda Giant Stellar Stream, we investigate the interaction between an accreting satellite galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy using an $N$-body simulation. A comprehensive parameter study with 247 models is performed by varying size and mass distribution of the progenitor dwarf galaxy. We show that the binding energy of the progenitor is the crucial parameter in reproducing the Andromeda Giant Stellar Stream and the shell-like structures surrounding the Andromeda Galaxy. As a result of the simulations, the progenitor must satisfy a simple scaling relation between …
Compact elliptical galaxies form a rare class of stellar system (~30 presently known) characterized by high stellar densities and small sizes and often harboring metal-rich stars. They were thought to form through tidal stripping of massive progenitors, until two isolated objects were discovered where massive galaxies performing the stripping could not be identified. By mining astronomical survey data, we have now found 195 compact elliptical galaxies in all types of environment. They all share similar dynamical and stellar population properties. Dynamical analysis for nonisolated galaxies dem…
We present the stellar populations of 138 compact elliptical galaxies (cEs) in the redshift range of $z < 0.05$ using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR12. Our cEs are divided into those with [cE(w)] and without [cE(w/o)] a bright ($M_{r} < -21$ mag) host galaxy. We investigated the stellar population properties of cEs based on the Lick line indices extracted from SDSS spectra. cE(w)s show [Z/H] and \afe\ distributions skewed toward higher values compared to those of the cE(w/o)s. No statistically significant difference in age distribution was found between the cE(w)s and cE(w/o)s. In the …
How elliptical galaxies form is a key question in observational cosmology. While the formation of massive ellipticals is strongly linked to mergers, the low mass (Mstar < 10^9.5 MSun) regime remains less well explored. In particular, studying elliptical populations when they are blue, and therefore rapidly building stellar mass, offers strong constraints on their formation. Here, we study 108 blue, low-mass ellipticals (which have a median stellar mass of 10^8.7 MSun) at z < 0.3 in the COSMOS field. Visual inspection of extremely deep optical HSC images indicates that less than 3 per cent of t…
We present the dynamical analysis of a sample of 12 dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies for which we have obtained SAURON large-scale two-dimensional spectroscopic data. We construct Jeans axisymmetric models and obtain total dynamical masses enclosed within one effective radius. We use the obtained values to show that the validity of the dynamical scaling relations of massive early-type galaxies can be extended to these low-mass systems, except that dEs seem to contain relatively larger fraction of dark matter in their inner parts. We then demonstrate that dE galaxies have lower angular momenta th…
The Giant Stellar Stream (GSS) is a prominent tidal feature in the halo of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), representing the ongoing destruction of a satellite galaxy. In this paper, we investigate the formation of the GSS through detailed numerical simulations of the tidal disruption of a progenitor system. Assuming that the stream was created in a single merger event between M31 and a dwarf spheroidal galaxy with stellar mass of $10^{9}M_{\odot}$, we successfully reproduce the dynamical properties of the GSS. As the metallicity distribution along the stream has been well determined from the obser…
We present a new method for tracing the evolution of BCGs from $z\sim 2$ to $z\sim 0$. We conclude on the basis of semi-analytical models that the best method to select BCG progenitors at $z\sim 2$ is a hybrid environmental density and stellar mass ranking approach. Ultimately we are able to retrieve 45\% of BCG progenitors. We apply this method on the CANDELS UDS data to construct a progenitor sample at high redshift. We furthermore populate the comparisons in local universe by using SDSS data with statistically likely contamination to ensure a fair comparison between high and low redshifts. …
We determine the ages of the young, resolved stellar populations at the locations of 237 optically-identified supernova remnants in M83. These age distributions put constraints on the progenitor masses of the supernovae that produced 199 of the remnants. The other 38 show no evidence for having a young progenitor and are therefore good Type Ia SNR candidates. Starting from Hubble Space Telescope broadband imaging, we measured resolved stellar photometry of seven archival WFC3/UVIS fields in F336W, F438W, and F814W. We generate color-magnitude diagrams of the stars within 50 pc of each SNR and …
_NGC 4589, a bright E2 merger-remnant galaxy, hosts the peculiar fast and faint calcium-rich Type Ib supernova (SN) SN 2005cz. The progenitor of Ca-rich SNe Ib has been controversial: it could be a) a young massive star with 6-12 M$\odot$ in a binary system, or b) an old low-mass star in a binary system that was kicked out from the galaxy center. Moreover, previous distance estimates for this galaxy have shown a large spread, ranging from 20 Mpc to 60 Mpc. Thus, using archival $Hubble$ $Space$ $Telescope$/ACS $F435W$, $F555W$, and $F814W$ images, we search for star clusters in NGC 4589 in orde…
To constrain the recipes put forth to solve the theoretical Fe discrepancy in the hot interstellar medium of elliptical galaxies and at the same time explain the [alpha/Fe] ratios. In order to do so we use the latest theoretical nucleosynthetic yields, we incorporate the dust, we explore differing SNIa progenitor scenarios by means of a self-consistent chemical evolution model which reproduces the properties of the stellar populations in elliptical galaxies. Models with Fe-only dust and/or a lower effective SNIa rate achieve a better agreement with the observed Fe abundance. However, a suitabl…
In order to investigate the formation mechanisms of the rare compact elliptical galaxies (cE) we have compiled a sample of 25 cEs with good SDSS spectra, covering a range of stellar masses, sizes and environments. They have been visually classified according to the interaction with their host, representing different evolutionary stages. We have included clearly disrupted galaxies, galaxies that despite not showing signs of interaction are located close to a massive neighbor (thus are good candidates for a stripping process), and cEs with no host nearby. For the latter, tidal stripping is less …
We have used hydrodynamical simulations to model the formation of the closest giant elliptical galaxy, Centaurus A. We find that a single major merger event with a mass ratio up to 1.5, and which has happened ~2 Gyr ago, is able to reproduce many of its properties, including galaxy kinematics, the inner gas disk, stellar halo ages and metallicities, and numerous faint features observed in the halo. The elongated halo shape is mostly made of progenitor residuals deposited by the merger, which also contribute to stellar shells observed in the Centaurus A halo. The current model also reproduces t…
We report the results of our follow-up campaign of the supernova impostor PSN J09132750+7627410, based on optical data covering $\sim250\,\rm{d}$. From the beginning, the transient shows prominent narrow Balmer lines with P-Cygni profiles, with a blue-shifted absorption component becoming more prominent with time. Along the $\sim3\,\rm{months}$ of the spectroscopic monitoring, broad components are never detected in the hydrogen lines, suggesting that these features are produced in slowly expanding material. The transient reaches an absolute magnitude $M_r=-13.60\pm0.19\,\rm{mag}$ at maximum, a…
We report new mid-infrared observations of the remarkable object IRAS 15099-5856 using the space telescopes AKARI and Spitzer, which demonstrate the presence of prominent crystalline silicate emission in this bright source. IRAS 15099-5856 has a complex morphology with a bright central compact source (IRS1) surrounded by knots, spurs, and several extended (~4') arc-like filaments. The source is seen only at >= 10 um. The Spitzer MIR spectrum of IRS1 shows prominent emission features from Mg-rich crystalline silicates, strong [Ne II] 12.81 um and several other faint ionic lines. We model the MI…
Stellar metallicity distribution functions (MDF) have been measured for resolved stellar populations in the outer halos of many galaxies in nearby groups. Among them, the MDF of NGC 5128, the central giant elliptical in the Centaurus group, provides essential constraints for theories of massive galaxy formation and hierarchical assembly. To investigate the formation and chemical evolution history of the outer halo of giant elliptical galaxies, we examine the chemical properties of three zoom-in high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of an NGC 5128-like giant elliptical galaxy …
We report the first detection of extended neutral hydrogen (HI) gas in the interstellar medium (ISM) of a massive elliptical galaxy beyond z~0. The observations utilize the doubly lensed images of QSO HE 0047-1756 at z_QSO = 1.676 as absorption-line probes of the ISM in the massive (M_star ~ 10^11 M_sun) elliptical lens at z = 0.408, detecting gas at projected distances of d = 3.3 and 4.6 kpc on opposite sides of the lens. Using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), we obtain UV absorption spectra of the lensed QSO and identify a prominent flux discontinuity and associated absorptio…
In a sample of elliptical galaxies that span a large range of mass, a previously unused Ca index, CaHK, shows that [Ca/Fe] and [Ca/Mg] systematically decrease with increasing elliptical galaxy mass. Metallicity mixtures, age effects, stellar chromospheric emission effects, and low-mass initial mass function (IMF) boost effects are ruled out as causes. A [Ca/Fe] range of less than 0.3 dex is sufficient to blanket all observations. Feature gradients within galaxies imply a global Ca deficit rather than a radius-dependent phenomenon. Some, but not all, Type II supernova nucleosynthetic yield calc…
Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs) are an extreme star-bursting population of galaxies that were far more common at earlier epochs than today. Based on spectroscopic and photometric measurements of LCBGs in massive (M >10^15 M_sun), intermediate redshift (0.5 < z < 0.9) galaxy clusters, we present their rest-frame properties including star-formation rate, dynamical mass, size, luminosity, and metallicity. The appearance of these small, compact galaxies in clusters at intermediate redshift helps explain the observed redshift evolution in the size-luminosity relationship among cluster galaxi…
Using the Illustris simulation, we follow thousands of elliptical galaxies back in time to identify how the dichotomy between fast and slow rotating ellipticals (FRs and SRs) develops. Comparing to the $\textrm{ATLAS}^\textrm{3D}$ survey, we show that Illustris reproduces similar elliptical galaxy rotation properties, quantified by the degree of ordered rotation, $λ_\textrm{R}$. There is a clear segregation between low-mass ($M_{\rm *} < 10^{11} M_{\rm \odot}$) ellipticals, which form a smooth distribution of FRs, and high-mass galaxies ($M_{\rm *} > 10^{11.5} M_{\rm \odot}$), which are mostly…
Three billion years after the big bang (at redshift z=2), half of the most massive galaxies were already old, quiescent systems with little to no residual star formation and extremely compact with stellar mass densities at least an order of magnitude larger than in low redshift ellipticals, their descendants. Little is known about how they formed, but their evolved, dense stellar populations suggest formation within intense, compact starbursts 1-2 Gyr earlier (at 3<z<6). Simulations show that gas-rich major mergers can give rise to such starbursts which produce dense remnants. Sub-millimeter s…
We report the discovery of a rare compact early-type galaxy, SDSS J085431.18+173730.5 (hereafter cE\_AGN). It has an half light radius of R$_{e}$ = 490 pc and a brightness of M$_{r}$ = $-$18.08 mag. Optical spectroscopy available from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) reveals the presence of prominent broad-line emissions with the H$α$ broad component width of FWHM=2400 km/s. The black hole (BH) mass, as estimated from the luminosity and width of the broad H$α$ emission, is 2.1$\times$10$^{6}$ M$_{\sun}$. With the help of surface photometry, we perform a detailed analysis of the structural p…
We present the stellar population analysis of a sample of 12 dwarf elliptical galaxies, observed with the SAURON integral field unit, using the full-spectrum fitting method. We show that star formation histories (SFHs) resolved into two populations can be recovered even within a limited wavelength range, provided that high S/N data is used. We confirm that dEs have had complex SFHs, with star formation extending to (more) recent epochs: for the majority of our galaxies star formation activity was either still strong a few ($\lesssim$ 5) Gyr ago or they experienced a secondary burst of star for…
Young massive clusters (YMCs) have central stellar mass surface densities exceeding $10^{4} M_{\odot} pc^{-2}$. It is currently unknown whether the stars formed at such high (proto)stellar densities. We compile a sample of gas clouds in the Galaxy which have sufficient gas mass within a radius of a few parsecs to form a YMC, and compare their radial gas mass distributions to the stellar mass distribution of Galactic YMCs. We find that the gas in the progenitor clouds is distributed differently than the stars in YMCs. The mass surface density profiles of the gas clouds are generally shallower t…
Dwarf ellipticals are the most common galaxy type in cluster environments, however the challenges associated with their observation mean their formation mechanisms are still poorly understood. To address this, we present deep integral field observations of a sample of 31 low-mass ($10^{7.5} <$ M$_\star < 10^{9.5}$ M$_\odot$) early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster with the SAMI instrument. For 21 galaxies our observations are sufficiently deep to construct spatially resolved maps of the stellar velocity and velocity dispersion - for the remaining galaxies we extract global velocities and dis…
We present observations of three Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) in elliptical hosts, detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility Bright Transient Survey (BTS). SN 2019ape is a SN Ic that exploded in the main body of a typical elliptical galaxy. Its properties are consistent with an explosion of a regular SN Ic progenitor. A secondary g-band light curve peak could indicate interaction of the ejecta with circumstellar material (CSM). An H$α$-emitting source at the explosion site suggests a residual local star formation origin. SN 2018fsh and SN 2020uik are SNe II which exploded in the outskirts …
We use cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations with the SPH code gasoline of four haloes of mass M_{200} \sim 10^{13}\Msun to study the response of the dark matter to elliptical galaxy formation. Our simulations include metallicity dependent gas cooling, star formation, and feedback from massive stars and supernovae, but not active galactic nuclei (AGN). At z=2 the progenitor galaxies have stellar to halo mass ratios consistent with halo abundance matching, assuming a Salpeter initial mass function. However by z=0 the standard runs suffer from the well known overcooling problem, overpr…
The presence of dust strongly affects the way we see galaxies and also the chemical abundances we measure in gas. It is therefore important to study he chemical evolution of galaxies by taking into account dust evolution. We aim at performing a detailed study of abundance ratios of high redshift objects and their dust properties. We focus on Lyman-Break galaxies (LBGs) and Quasar (QSO) hosts and likely progenitors of low- and high-mass present-day elliptical galaxies, respectively. We have adopted a chemical evolution model for elliptical galaxies taking account the dust production from low an…
It has been proposed that a galaxy's nova rate might be enhanced by the production of nova progenitor binaries in the dense cores of its globular clusters (GCs). To explore this idea, relative nova rates in three Virgo elliptical galaxies, M87, M49 and M84, which have significantly different GC specific frequencies ($S_{N}$) of 14, 3.6, and 1.6, respectively, were measured over the course of 4 epochs spanning a period of 14 months. To simplify the analysis, observations of the nearly equidistant galaxies were made on the same nights, with the same integration times, and through the same filter…
We present simulations of dry-merger encounters between pairs of elliptical galaxies with dark matter halos. The aim of these simulations is to study the intergalactic stellar populations produced in both parabolic and hyperbolic encounters. We model progenitor galaxies with total-to-luminous mass ratios M_T/M_L 3 and 11. The initial mass of the colliding galaxies are chosen so that M_1/M_2 and 10. The model galaxies are populated by particles representing stars, as in Stanghellini et al. (2006), and dark matter. Merger remnants resulting from these encounters display a population of unbounded…
We analyze a suite of 33 cosmological simulations of the evolution of Milky Way-mass galaxies in low-density environments. Our sample spans a broad range of Hubble types at z=0, from nearly bulgeless disks to bulge-dominated galaxies. Despite the fact that a large fraction of the bulge is typically in place by z=1, we find no significant correlation between the morphology at z=1 and at z=0. The z=1 progenitors of disk galaxies span a range of morphologies, including smooth disks, unstable disks, interacting galaxies and bulge-dominated systems. By z=0.5, spiral arms and bars are largely in pla…
The nature of the newly discovered fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) is still puzzling astronomers. In this paper we carry out a comprehensive analysis of the molecular gas, ionized gas and stellar populations in the environment of the nearby FBOT AT2018cow based on ALMA, VLT/MUSE and HST/WFC3 observations. A prominent molecular concentration of 6 ($\pm$ 1) $\times$ 10$^6$ $M_\odot$ is found in the vicinity of AT2018cow, which has given rise to two active star-forming complexes with ages of 4 $\pm$ 1 Myr and $\lesssim$2.5 Myr, respectively. Each star-forming complex has a stellar mass of 3 …
