Nonequilibrium processes occurring in functional materials can significantly impact device efficiencies and are often difficult to characterize due to the broad range of length and time scales involved. In particular, mixed halide hybrid perovskites are promising for optoelectronics, yet the halides reversibly phase separate when photo-excited, significantly altering device performance. By combining nanoscale imaging and multiscale modeling, we elucidate the mechanism underlying this phenomenon, demonstrating that local strain induced by photo-generated polarons promotes halide phase separation and leads to nucleation of light-stabilized iodide-rich clusters. This effect relies on the unique electromechanical properties of hybrid materials, characteristic of neither their organic nor inorganic constituents alone. Exploiting photo-induced phase separation and other nonequilibrium phenomena in hybrid materials, generally, could enable new opportunities for expanding the functional applications in sensing, photoswitching, optical memory, and energy storage.
Mixed-halide based hybrid perovskite semiconductors have attracted tremendous attention as a promising candidate for high efficient photovoltaic and light-emitting devices. However, these advanced perovskite materials may undergo phase segregation under light illumination due to halide ion migration, affecting their optoelectronic properties. Here, we report photo-excitation induced phase segregation in triple-cation mixed-halide perovskite films that yields to red-shift in photoluminescence response. We demonstrate that photo-excitation induced halide ion migration leads to the formation of s…
Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites feature a versatile structure, which not only enables the fine-tuning of their optoelectronic properties but also makes them appealing as model systems to investigate the fundamental properties of hybrid perovskites. In this study, we analyzed the changes in the optical absorption of 2D Dion-Jacobson mixed halide perovskite thin films (encapsulated) based on (PDMA)Pb(I0.5Br0.5)4 (PDMA: 1,4-phenylenedimethanammonium spacer) exposed to a constant illumination. We demonstrate that these 2D mixed-halide perovskites undergo photo de-mixing with direct transfo…
Recent advances of highly efficient solar cells based on organic-inorganic halide perovskites have triggered intense research efforts to establish the fundamental properties of these materials. In this work, we utilized diamond anvil cell to investigate the pressure-induced structural and electronic transformations in methylammonium lead iodide (CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$) up to 7 GPa at room temperature. The synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment show that the sample transformed from tetragonal to orthorhombic phase at 0.3 GPa and amorphized above 4 GPa. Further high pressure IR spectroscopy exper…

Perovskite solar cells have shown fast deterioration during actual operation even with encapsulation, but its mechanism has been elusive. We found the fundamental mechanism for irreversible degradation of perovskite materials in which trapped charges regardless of the polarity play a decisive role. A novel experimental setup utilizing different polarity ions revealed that the moisture induced irreversible dissociation of perovskite materials is triggered by charges trapped along grain boundaries. Our finding clearly explained the intriguing observations why light soaking induces irreversible d…
Reversible topotactic transitions between oxygen-vacancy-ordered structures in transition metal oxides provide a promising strategy for active manipulation of material properties. While transformations between various oxygen-deficient phases have been attained in bulk ABO$_{3-δ}$ perovskites, substrate clamping restricts the formation of distinct ordering patterns in epitaxial films. Using in-situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), we image a thermally driven reversible transition in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_{3-δ}$ films on SrTiO$_3$ from a multidomain brownmillerite (BM) struct…
Organolead halide perovskites have attracted substantial attention due to their excellent physical properties, which enable them to serve as the active material in emerging hybrid solid-state solar cells. Here we investigate the phototransistors based on hybrid perovskite films, and provide direct evidence for their superior carrier transport property with ambipolar characteristics. The field-effect mobilities for triiodide perovskites at room temperature are measured as 0.18 (0.17) cm2 V-1 s-1 for holes (electrons), which increase to 1.24 (1.01) cm2 V-1 s-1 for mixed halide perovskites. The p…
Lead-free halide double perovskites are promising stable and non-toxic alternatives to methylammonium lead iodide in the field of photovoltaics. In this context, the most commonly used double perovskite is Cs$_2$AgBiBr$_6$, due to its favorable charge transport properties. However, the maximum power conversion efficiency obtained for this material does not exceed 3\%, as a consequence of its wide indirect gap and its intrinsic and extrinsic defects. On the other hand, the materials space that arises from the substitution of different elements in the 4 lattice sites of this structure is large a…
Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are known to undergo several structural phase transitions, from lower to higher symmetry, upon heating. While structural phase transitions have been investigated by a wide range of optical, thermal and electrical methods, most measurements are quasi-static and hence do not provide direct information regarding the fundamental timescale of phase transitions in this emerging class of semiconductors. Here we investigate the timescale of the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition in the prototypical metal halide perovskite, methylammonium lead triiodide (CH3NH3P…
Methylammonium lead iodide perovskites are considered direct bandgap semiconductors. Here we show that in fact they present a weakly indirect bandgap 60 meV below the direct bandgap transition. This is a consequence of spin-orbit coupling resulting in Rashba-splitting of the conduction band. The indirect nature of the bandgap explains the apparent contradiction of strong absorption and long charge carrier lifetime. Under hydrostatic pressure from ambient to 325 MPa, Rashba splitting is reduced due to a pressure induced ordering of the crystal structure. The nature of the bandgap becomes increa…
Lead-halide perovskites attracted attention as materials for high-efficiency solar cells and light emitting applications. Among their attributes are solution processability, high absorbance in the visible spectral range and defect tolerance, as manifested in long photocarrier lifetimes and diffusion lengths. The microscopic origin of photophysical properties of perovskites is, however, still unclear and under debate. Here, we have observed an interesting universal scaling behavior in a series of (hybrid and all-inorganic) perovskite single crystals investigated via simultaneous measurements of…
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have drawn significant interest for applications in optoelectronics over the last few years. Despite rapid progress in understanding the photophysics of perovskite, there remains a need for improved understanding of the effect of microstructure on perovskite photophysical processes. Here, we combine unsupervised machine learning and cathodoluminescence microscopy of a prototypical hybrid perovskite film to decode photophysical processes that are otherwise lost with conventional Gaussian image processing. Hyperspectral maps are decoded with non-negative matr…
Halide perovskites are recently emerged as one of the frontline optoelectronic materials for device applications and have been extensively studied in past few years. Among these while, lead-based materials were most widely explored, investigation of optical properties of lead-free perovskites is limited. Being optically active, these materials were expected to show light-induced enhanced photoconductivity and the same was reported for lead halide perovskite single crystals. However, on contrary, herein, light-induced degradation of bismuth halide perovskite Cs3Bi2Cl9 single crystals is reporte…
The past few years have witnessed unprecedented rapid improvement of the performance of a new class of photovoltaics based on halide perovskites. This progress has been achieved even though there is no generally accepted mechanism of the operation of these solar cells. Here we present a model based on bistable amphoteric native defects that accounts for all key characteristics of these photovoltaics and explains many idiosyncratic properties of halide perovskites. We show that a transformation between donor-like and acceptor-like configurations leads to a resonant interaction between amphoteri…
Organo-lead halide perovskite materials have opened up a great opportunity to develop high performance photodetectors because of their superior optoelectronic properties. The main issue with perovskite-only photodetector is severe carrier recombination. Integration of perovskite with high-conductive materials such as graphene or transition metal sulfides certainly improved the photoresponsivity. However, achieving high overall performance remains a challenge. Here, an improved photodetector is constructed by perovskite quantum dots (QDs) and atomic layer deposited (ALD) ultrathin TiO2 films. T…
In recent years, metal halide perovskites have generated tremendous interest for optoelectronic applications and their underlying fundamental properties. Due to the large electron-phonon coupling characteristic of soft lattices, self-trapping phenomena are expected to dominate hybrid perovskite photoexcitation dynamics. Yet, while the photogeneration of small polarons was proven in low dimensional perovskites, the nature of polaron excitations in technologically relevant 3D perovskites, and their influence on charge carrier transport, remain elusive. In this study, we used a combination of fir…
Organolead trihalide perovskites have drawn substantial interest for applications in photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices due to their low processing cost and remarkable physical properties. However, perovskite thin films still suffer from low carrier mobility, limiting their device performance and application potential. Here we report that embedding single-walled carbon nanotubes into halide perovskite films can significantly enhance the hole and electron mobilities to record-high values of 595.3 and 108.7 cm2 V-1 s-1, respectively. In the ambipolar phototransistors with such hybrid channe…
Organometal halide perovskite has emerged as a promising material for solar cells and optoelectronics. Although the long diffusion length of photo-generated carriers is believed to be a critical factor responsible for the material's high efficiency in solar cells, a direct study of carrier transport over long distances in organometal halide perovskites is still lacking. We fabricated highly oriented crystalline CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ (MAPbI$_3$) thin film lateral transport devices with long channel length (~ 120 $μ$m). By performing spatially scanned photocurrent imaging measurements with local i…
An organic-inorganic halide perovskite of CH3NH3SnI3 with significantly improved structural stability is obtained via pressure-induced amorphization and recrystallization. In situ high-pressure resistance measurements reveal an increased electrical conductivity by 300% in the pressure-treated perovskite. Photocurrent measurements also reveal a substantial enhancement in visible-light responsiveness. The mechanism underlying the enhanced properties is demonstrated to be associated with the improved structural stability.
Lead-halide perovskites have demonstrated astonishing increases in power conversion efficiency in photovoltaics over the last decade. The most efficient perovskite devices now outperform industry-standard multi-crystalline silicon solar cells, despite the fact that perovskites are typically grown at low temperature using simple solution-based methods. However, the toxicity of lead and its ready solubility in water are concerns for widespread implementation. These challenges, alongside the many successes of the perovskites, have motivated significant efforts across multiple disciplines to find …
Inorganic-organic perovskites semiconductors are becoming increasingly interesting due to their remarkable optical properties, such as a high photoluminescence quantum yield and the possibility to show optical gain in a broad range of wavelengths. We have here simulated microcavities that embed MaPBI3 and 2D hybrid organic inorganic perovskite semiconductors by sandwiching such active layers between periodic, aperiodic and disordered photonic structures. We have carefully considered the refractive index dispersion of all the materials employed, such silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide and the pe…
We demonstrate four and two-terminal perovskite-perovskite tandem solar cells with ideally matched bandgaps. We develop an infrared absorbing 1.2eV bandgap perovskite, $FA_{0.75}Cs_{0.25}Sn_{0.5}Pb_{0.5}I_3$, that can deliver 14.8 % efficiency. By combining this material with a wider bandgap $FA_{0.83}Cs_{0.17}Pb(I_{0.5}Br_{0.5})_3$ material, we reach monolithic two terminal tandem efficiencies of 17.0 % with over 1.65 volts open-circuit voltage. We also make mechanically stacked four terminal tandem cells and obtain 20.3 % efficiency. Crucially, we find that our infrared absorbing perovskite …
The low ionization energy of an $A$ site molecule is a very important factor, which determines the thermodynamical stability of $A$PbI$_3$ hybrid halide perovskites, while the size of the molecule governs the stable phase at room temperature and, eventually, the bandgap. It is challenging to achieve both a low ionization energy and the reasonable size for the PbI$_3$ cage to circumvent the stability issue inherent to hybrid halide perovskites. Here we propose a new three-membered charged ring radical, which demonstrates a low ionization energy that renders a good stability for its correspondin…
Halide perovskites exhibit giant photostriction, that is, volume or shape changes upon illumination. However, the microscopic origin of this phenomenon remains unclear and there are experimental reports of both light-induced lattice expansion and contraction. In this paper we establish a general method, based on first-principles calculations and molecular orbital theory, which provides a microscopic picture of photostriction in insulators based on the orbital characters of their electronic bands near the Fermi level. For lead-halide perovskites, we find that different valence states have diffe…
In recent years, halide perovskite-based solar cells have received intensive attention, and demonstrated power conversion efficiency as high as 25.8%. With regard to the toxicity of Pb and the instability of organic elements, all inorganic lead-free perovskites (ILPs) have been extensively studied to achieve comparable or greater photovoltaic performance. In order to develop ILPs as an alternative for solar cell applications, we performed first-principles calculations of ABBr3 perovskites (A = Cs, Rb, K, and Na, and B = Sn, and Ge). Structural, electronic, and optical properties were systemati…
Photochemical stability of encapsulated films of mixed halide perovskites with a range of MAPb(I1-xBrx)3 compositions (solid solutions) was investigated under accelerated stressing using concentrated sunlight. Evolution of light absorption and the corresponding structural modifications in the films were recorded by UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. MAPbBr3 film exhibited no degradation. In MAPbI3 and mixed halide MAPb(I1-xBrx)3 films, decomposition of the perovskite material with crystallization of inorganic PbI2, and the corresponding degradation of light absorpti…
The performance of perovskite solar cells recently exceeded 15% solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency for small-area devices. The fundamental properties of the active absorber layers, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites formed from mixing metal and organic halides [\textit{e.g.} (NH$_4$)PbI$_3$ and (CH$_3$NH$_3$)PbI$_3$], are largely unknown. The materials are semiconductors with direct band gaps at the boundary of the first Brillouin zone. The calculated dielectric response and band gaps show an orientation dependence, with a low barrier for rotation of the organic cations. Due to the e…
Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) is a benchmark hybrid organic perovskite material, which is used for the low-cost, printed solar cells with over 20 percent power conversion efficiency. Yet, the nature of light-matter interaction in MAPI as well as the exact physical mechanism behind device operation is currently debated. Here we report room temperature, ultrafast photocurrent and freespace terahertz (THz) emission generation from unbiased MAPI induced by 150 fs light pulses. Polarization dependence of the observed photoresponse is consistent with the Bulk Photovoltaic Effect (BPVE) caused by…
We study the circular photogalvanic effect in the organometal halide perovskite solar cell absorber CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$. For crystal structures which lack inversion symmetry, the calculated photocurrent density is about $10^{-9}$ A/W, comparable to the previously studied quantum well and bulk Rashba systems. Because of the dependence of the circular photogalvanic effect on inversion symmetry breaking, the degree of inversion asymmetry at different depths from the surface can be probed by tuning the photon energy and associated penetration depth. We propose that measurements of this effect may …
Piezoelectrics play a critical role in various applications. The permanent dipole associated with the molecular cations in organometal-halide perovskites (OMHPs) may lead to spontaneous polarization and thus piezoelectricity. Here, we explore the piezoelectric properties of OMHPs with density functional theory. We find that the piezoelectric coefficient depends sensitively on the molecular ordering, and that the experimentally observed light-enhanced piezoelectricity is due to to a non-polar to polar structural transition. By comparing OMHPs with different atomic substitutions in the $ABX_3$ a…
Polar heterogeneous photocatalysts were shown to lead to enhanced charge-carrier separation that results in superior activity for example for photocatalytic water splitting. Promising photocatalyst materials such as oxynitrides can be rendered polar by epitaxial strain, which however also increases their band gap, making them unsuitable for visible light absorption. This suggests a trade-off between small band gaps and polar distortions - both being crucial for the catalyst's efficiency. In this paper we investigate, using density functional theory calculations, the suitability of strained AB(…
While transient photoluminescence measurements are a very popular tool to monitor the charge-carrier dynamics in the field of halide perovskite photovoltaics, interpretation of data obtained on multilayer samples is highly challenging due to the superposition of various effects that modulate the charge-carrier concentration in the perovskite layer and thereby the measured PL. These effects include bulk and interfacial recombination, charge transfer to electron or hole transport layers and capacitive charging or discharging. Here, numerical simulations with Sentauraus TCAD, analytical solutions…
Halide perovskites have outstanding photovoltaic properties which have been optimized through interfacial engineering. However, as these materials approach the limits imposed by the physics of semiconductor junctions, it is urgent to explore alternatives, such as the bulk photovoltaic effect, whose physical origin is different and not bound by the same limits. In this context, we focus on the flexo-photovoltaic effect, a type of bulk photovoltaic effect that was recently observed in oxides under strain gradients. We have measured the flexo-photovoltaic effect of MAPbBr3 and MAPbI3 crystals und…
Paper offers a low-cost and widely available substrate for electronics. It posses alternative characteristics to silicon, as it shows low density and high-flexibility, together with biodegradability. Solution processable materials, such as hybrid perovskites, also present light and flexible features, together with a huge tunability of the material composition with varying optical properties. In this study, we combine paper substrates with halide-mixed perovskites for the creation of low-cost and easy-to-fabricate perovskite-on-paper photodetectors with a broadband-tunable spectral response. Fr…
The MAPbI$_3$ halide perovskite single crystals are studied at 5 K temperature using the photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. Two non-interacting types of states are determined: bound excitons and defect-related states. Excitation of the crystal with light energy below the bound exciton resonance reveals the complex low-density defects emission, otherwise hidden by the emission of bound excitons. A way to separate these defect-related luminescence spectra is proposed, and the thorough study of this emission regime is carried out. The results of this study opens an area of low-density def…
Perovksite semiconductors have shown promise for low-cost solar cells, lasers and photodetectors, yet their fundamental photophysical properties are not well understood. Recent observations of a low ($\sim$few meV) exciton binding energy and evidence of hot phonon effects in the room temperature phase suggest that perovskites are much closer to inorganic semiconductors than the absorber layers in traditional organic photovoltaics, signaling the need for experiments that shed light on the placement of perovskite materials within the spectrum of semiconductors used in optoelectronics and photovo…

Fast, reversible redox reactions in solids at low temperatures without thermomechanical degradation are a promising strategy for enhancing the overall performance and lifetime of many energy materials and devices. However, the robust nature of the cation's oxidation state and the high thermodynamic barrier have hindered the realization of fast catalysis and bulk diffusion at low temperatures. Here, we report a significant lowering of the redox temperature by epitaxial stabilization of strontium cobaltites (SrCoOx) grown directly as one of two distinct crystalline phases, either the perovskite …
The spin-split indirect bandgap in hybrid-halide perovskites provides a momentum-space realisation of a photon-ratchet intermediate band. Excited electrons thermalise to recombination-protected Rashba pockets offset in momentum space, building up the charge density to have sufficient flux to the higher lying conduction band. This effect could be used to form an intrinsic intermediate band solar cell with efficiencies beyond the Shockley-Queisser limit if a selective low-electron affinity contact can be made to the higher conduction state. This concept is supported by analysis of the many-body …
Most traditional semiconductor materials are based on the control of doping densities to create junctions and thereby functional and efficient electronic and optoelectronic devices. The technology development for halide perovskites had initially only rarely made use of the concept of electronic doping of the perovskite layer and instead employed a variety of different contact materials to create functionality. Only recently, intentional, or unintentional doping of the perovskite layer is more frequently invoked as an important factor explaining differences in photovoltaic or optoelectronic per…
