Novel braneworld scenarios supported by warp factors driven by a single extra dimension are obtained from deformed one-dimensional lump-like solutions known {\em a priori}. Through a novel {\em ansatz}, the internal energy structure, the braneworld warp factor, and the quantum mechanical analogue problem, as well as the associated zero mode solutions, are straightforwardly derived by means of an analytical procedure. The results allow one to identify thick brane solutions that support internal structures and that can hold the ($3+1$)-dimensional gravity.
In this work we investigate two distinct extensions of the deformation procedure introduced in former works on deformed defects. The first extension deals with the use of deformation functions which can assume complex values, and the second concerns the possibility of making the deformation dependent on the defect solution of the model used to implement the deformation. These two extensions bring the deformation procedure to a significantly higher standard and allow to build interesting results, as we explicitly illustrate with examples of current interest to high energy physics.
In this paper, we will analyse the topological defects in a deformation of a non-abelian gauge theory using the Polyakov variables. The gauge theory will be deformed by the existence of a minimum measurable length scale in the background spacetime. We will construct the Polyakov loops for this deformed non-abelian gauge theory, and use these deformed loop space variables for obtaining a deformed loop space curvature. It will be demonstrated that this curvature will vanish if the deformed Bianchi identities are satisfied. However, it is possible that the original Bianchi identities are satisfie…
Recently a prescription to compute the four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal index in the presence of certain BPS surface defects has been given. These surface defects are labelled by symmetric representations of SU(N). In the present paper we give a prescription to compute the superconformal index in the presence of surface defects labelled by arbitrary representations of SU(N). Furthermore, we extend the dictionary between the N = 2 superconformal Schur-index and correlators of q-deformed Yang-Mills to incorporate such surface defects.
In this paper we use the deformation procedure introduced in former work on deformed defects to investigate several new models for real scalar field. We introduce an interesting deformation function, from which we obtain two distinct families of models, labeled by the parameters that identify the deformation function. We investigate these models, which identify a broad class of polynomial interactions. We find exact solutions describing global defects, and we study the corresponding stability very carefully.
At the present work we consider an application of the deformation procedure that enable us to construct, systematically, scalar field models supporting multikinks. We introduce a new deformation function in order to realize this task. We exemplify the procedure with three different starting models already known in the literature, and the resulting deformed models have rich vacua structures which are responsible for the appearance of multikink configurations.
Numerical solutions of Einstein, scalar, and gauge field equations are found for static and inflating defects in a higher-dimensional spacetime. The defects have $(3+1)$-dimensional core and magnetic monopole configuration in $n=3$ extra dimensions. For symmetry-breaking scale $η$ below the critical value $η_c$, the defects are characterized by a flat worldsheet geometry and asymptotically flat extra dimensions. The critical scale $η_c$ is comparable to the higher-dimensional Planck scale and has some dependence on the gauge and scalar couplings. For $η=η_c$, the extra dimensions degenerate in…
In this work we analyze the zero mode localization and resonances of $1/2-$spin fermions in co-dimension one Randall-Sundrum braneworld scenarios. We consider delta-like, domain walls and deformed domain walls membranes. Beyond the influence of the spacetime dimension $D$ we also consider three types of couplings: (i) the standard Yukawa coupling with the scalar field and parameter $η_1$, (ii) a Yukawa-dilaton coupling with two parameters $η_2$ and $λ$ and (iii) a dilaton derivative coupling with parameter $h$. Together with the deformation parameter $s$, we end up with five free parameter to …
We initiate the study of $T\bar T$-like irrelevant solvable deformations in quantum field theory with boundaries and defects. For this purpose, we employ a general formalism developed in the context of spin chains, which allows us to derive both, the deformed bulk and boundary/defect scattering matrices of integrable models. Using the deformed scattering matrices, we derive the flow equation for the deformed finite volume spectrum, as well as the cylinder partition function and the exact $g$-function.
We generalize earlier results on one-point functions in N = 4 SYM with a co-dimension one defect, dual to the D3-D5-brane setup in type IIB string theory on AdS5xS5, to a similar setup in the $β$-deformed version of the theory. The treelevel vacuum expectation values of single-trace operators in the two-scalar-subsector are expressed as overlaps between a matrix product state (MPS) and Bethe states in the corresponding twisted spin-chain picture. We comment on the properties of this MPS and present the simplest analytical overlaps and their behavior in a certain limit (of large k). Importantly…
In this work, we compute the corrections in the Newton's law of gravitation due to Kaluza-Klein gravitons in codimension-1 warped thick braneworld scenarios. We focus in some models recently proposed in the literature, the so-called asymmetric hybrid brane and compact brane. Such models are deformations of the $ϕ^4$ and sine-Gordon topological defects, respectively. Therefore we consider the branes engendered by such defects and we also compute the corrections in their cases. We use suitable numerical techniques to attain the mass spectrum and its corresponding eigenfunctions which are the ess…
We address the issue of glueball masses in a holographic dual field theory on the boundary of an AdS space deformed by a four-dimensional cosmological constant. These glueballs are related to scalar and tensorial fluctuations of the bulk fields on this space. In the Euclidean AdS4 case the allowed masses are discretized and are related to distinct inflaton masses on a 3-brane with several states of inflation. We then obtain the e-folds number in terms of the glueball masses. In the last part we focus on the Lorentzian dS4 case to focus on the QCD equation of state in dual field theory.
Localization and mass spectrum of bosonic and fermionic matter fields of some novel families of asymmetric thick brane configurations generated by deformed defects are investigated. The localization profiles of spin 0, spin 1/2 and spin 1 bulk fields are identified for novel matter field potentials supported by thick branes with internal structures. The condition for localization is constrained by the brane thickness of each model such that thickest branes strongly induces matter localization. The bulk mass terms for both fermion and boson fields are included in the global action as to produce…
We constructed a six-dimensional version of the standing wave model with an anisotropic 4-brane generated by a phantom-like scalar field. The model represents a braneworld where the compact (on-brane) dimension is assumed to be sufficiently small in order to describe our universe (hybrid compactification). The proposed geometry of the brane and its transverse manifold is non-static, unlike the majority of braneworld models presented in the literature. Furthermore, we have shown that the zero-mode scalar field is localized around the brane. While in the string-like defect the scalar field is lo…
We continue the investigation of a recent proposal on alternative matching conditions for self-gravitating defects which generalize the standard matching conditions. The reasoning for this study is the need for consistency of the various codimension defects and the existence of a meaningful equation of motion at the probe limit, things that seem to lack from the standard approach. These matching conditions arise by varying the brane-bulk action with respect to the brane embedding fields (and not with respect to the bulk metric at the brane position) in a way that takes into account the gravita…
We study the tidal deformations of various known black hole and wormhole solutions in a simple context of warped compactification -- Randall-Sundrum theory in which the four-dimensional spacetime geometry is that of a brane embedded in five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime. The linearized gravitational perturbation theory generically reduces to either an inhomogeneous second-order ODE or a homogeneous third-order ODE of which indicial roots associated with an expansion about asymptotic infinity can be related to Tidal Love Numbers. We describe various tidal-deformed metrics, classify their…
We introduce a method to obtain deformed defects starting from a given scalar field theory which possesses defect solutions. The procedure allows the construction of infinitely many new theories that support defect solutions, analytically expressed in terms of the defects of the original theory. The method is general, valid for both topological and non-topological defects, and we show how it extends to quantum mechanics, and how it works when the scalar field couples to fermions. We illustrate the general procedure with several examples, which support kink-like or lump-like defects.
We make an analysis about several aspects of localization of a scalar field and a Kalb-Ramond gauge field in a specific four dimensional AdS membrane embedded in a five dimensional space-time. The membrane is generated from a deformation of the $λϕ^4$ potential and belongs to a new class of defect solutions. The study of deformed defects is important because they contain internal structures and these may have implications to the way the background space-time is constructed and the way its curvature behaves. The main objective is to observe the contributions of the deformation procedure to the …
Sine-Gordon deformed defects that exhibit unusual phenomenological features on the topological charge are investigated. The possibility of a smooth and continuous transition between topological (non null charge) and non-topological (null charge) scenarios of deformed defects supported by sine-Gordon structures is evinced by the analytical calculation of topological charges and localized energy distributions. By describing cyclic deformation chains, we show that a triggering sine-Gordon model simultaneously supports kink and lump-like defects, whose topological mass values are closed by trigono…
We make an analysis about several aspects of localization of the Kalb-Ramond gauge field in a specific four dimensional AdS membrane embedded in a five dimensional space-time. The membrane is generated from a deformation of the $λϕ^4$ potential and belongs to a new class of defect solutions. In this context we find resonance structures in the analysis of massive modes. The study of deformed defects is important because they contain internal structures and these may have implications to the way the background space-time is constructed and the way its curvature behaves. The main objective here i…
In the context of class S theories and 4D/2D duality relations there, we discuss the skein relations of general topological defects on the 2D side which are expected to be counterparts of composite surface-line operators in 4D class S theory. Such defects are geometrically interpreted as networks in a three dimensional space. We also propose a conjectural computational procedure for such defects in two dimensional SU(N) topological q-deformed Yang-Mills theory by interpreting it as a statistical mechanical system associated with ideal triangulations.
We extend a deformation prescription recently introduced and present some new soluble nonlinear problems for kinks and lumps. In particular, we show how to generate models which present the basic ingredients needed to give rise to dimension bubbles. Also, we show how to deform models which possess lumplike solutions, to get to new models that support kinklike solutions.
Pöschl-Teller-driven solutions for quantum mechanical fluctuations are triggered off by single scalar field theories obtained through a systematic perturbative procedure for generating deformed defects. The analytical properties concerning the quantum fluctuations in one-dimension, zero-mode states, first- and second- excited states, and energy density profiles are all obtained from deformed topological and non-topological structures supported by real scalar fields. Results are firstly derived from an integrated $λϕ^4$ theory, with corresponding generalizations applied to starting $λχ^4$ and {…
A systematic procedure for obtaining defect structures through cyclic deformation chains is introduced and explored in detail. The procedure outlines a set of rules for analytically constructing constraint equations that involve the finite localized energy of cyclically generated defects. The idea of obtaining cyclically deformed defects concerns the possibility of regenerating a primitive (departing) defect structure through successive, unidirectional, and eventually irreversible, deformation processes. Our technique is applied on kink-like and lump-like solutions in models described by a sin…
Our main objective is to study how braneworld models of higher codimension differ from the 5D case and traditional Kaluza-Klein compactifications. We first derive the classical dynamics describing the physical fluctuations in a wide class of models incorporating gravity, non-Abelian gauge fields, the dilaton and two-form potential, as well as 3-brane sources. Next, we use these results to study braneworld compactifications in 6D supergravity, focusing on the bosonic fields in the minimal model; composed of the supergravity-tensor multiplet and the U(1) gauge multiplet whose flux supports the c…
We identify the kinks of a deformed O(3) linear Sigma model as the solutions of a set of first-order systems of equations; the above model is a generalization of the MSTB model with a three-component scalar field. Taking into account certain kink energy sum rules we show that the variety of kinks has the structure of a moduli space that can be compactified in a fairly natural way. The generic kinks, however, are unstable and Morse Theory provides the framework for the analysis of kink stability.
We study the effective gravitational theory on a brane in a six-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell model of flux compactification, regularizing a conical defect as a codimension-one brane. We employ the gradient expansion technique valid at low energies. A lowest order analysis showed that standard four-dimensional Einstein gravity is reproduced on the brane. We extend this study to include second order corrections in the effective equations, and show that the correction term is given by a quadratic energy-momentum tensor. Taking the thin-brane limit where the regularized brane shrinks to the pole, …
Plane wave solutions of Schrodinger-like equations obtained from the metric perturbations in 5D braneworld scenarios can present resonant modes. The search for those structures is important because they can provide us massive modes with not suppressed couplings with the membrane. We propose in this paper the study of graviton Kaluza-Klein spectrum in a special kind of membrane that possesses internal structure. The interest in study of these deformed defects is because they have a more rich internal structure that has implications in the matter-energy density along the extra dimensions an this…
Here we consider resonances of the Gauge, Gravity and Spinor fields in Randall-Sundrum-like scenarios. We consider membranes that are generated by a class of topological defects that are deformed domain walls obtained from other previously known ones. They are obtained by a deformation procedure generate different potentials to the associated Schrödinger-like equation. The resonance spectra are calculated numerically using the method of Transfer Matrix developed by the authors and presented in JHEP 1108 (2011) 071. The new deformed defects change the resonances spectra of all fields considered…
We consider the deformed harmonic oscillator as a discrete version of the Liouville theory and study this model in the presence of local integrable defects. From this, the time evolution of the defect degrees of freedom are determined, found in the form of the local equations of motion. We also revisit the continuous Liouville theory, deriving its local integrals of motion and comparing these with previous results from the sine-Gordon point of view. Finally, the generic Backlund type relations are presented, corresponding to the implementation of time-like and space-like impurities in the conti…
This work deals with the presence of defect structures in models described by real scalar field in a diversity of scenarios. The defect structures which we consider are static solutions of the equations of motion which depend on a single spatial dimension. We search for different models, which support the same defect solution, with the very same energy density. We work in flat spacetime, where we introduce and investigate a new class of models. We also work in curved spacetime, within the braneworld context, with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, and there we show how the brane is f…
We develop a general procedure to deal with defect structures in generalized models, described by a single real scalar field, in (1,1) spacetime dimensions. The models that we consider have the standard kinetic and potential contributions modified to include corrections that depend on a single small parameters, used to control modification on the kinematics and the potential. We start with standard model that engenders stable defect structures, and we show how to obtain new structures for the generalized models. We examine distinct aspects of the new deformed solutions, including linear stabil…
In these Lectures a method is described to analyze the effect of quantum fluctuations on topological defect backgrounds up to the one-loop level. The method is based on the spectral heat kernel/zeta function regularization procedure, and it is first applied to various types of kinks arising in several deformed linear and non-linear sigma models with different numbers of scalar fields. In the second part, the same conceptual framework is constructed for the topological solitons of the planar semilocal Abelian Higgs model, built from a doublet of complex scalar fields and one U(1) gauge field.
We study linearized gravity in a six-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell model of warped braneworlds, where the extra dimensions are compactified by a magnetic flux. It is difficult to construct a strict codimension two braneworld with matter sources other than pure tension. To overcome this problem we replace the codimension two defect by an extended brane, with one spatial dimension compactified on a Kaluza-Klein circle. Our background is composed of a warped, axisymmetric bulk and one or two branes. We find that weak gravity sourced by arbitrary matter on the brane(s) is described by a four-dimens…
The central charge $C_T$ is computed for scalar and Dirac fields propagating according to GJMS-type kinetic operators acting on odd $d$-dimensional spheres in the presence of a spherical monodromy. The relation of $C_T$ to the derivatives of the free energy on the conically deformed sphere via the Perlmutter factor leads to a numerical quadrature. The variation of $C_T$ with the monodromy flux, $δ$, displays sign changes, exactly as in even dimensions. Closed forms for $C_T$ are derived when $δ$ equals 0 or 1/2 with the derivative order either even or odd and shown to agree with existing, even…
We present a method for generating new deformed solutions starting from systems of two real scalar fields for which defect solutions and orbits are known. The procedure generalizes the approach introduced in a previous work [Phys. Rev. D 66, 101701(R) (2002)], in which it is shown how to construct new models altogether with its defect solutions, in terms of the original model and solutions. As an illustration, we work out an explicit example in detail.
We study a class of two-dimensional compact extra spaces isomorphic to the sphere $S^2$ in the framework of multidimensional gravitation. We show that there exists a family of stationary metrics that depend on the initial (boundary) conditions. All these geometries have a singular point. We also discuss the possibility for these deformed extra spaces to be considered as dark matter candidates.
We study massive and massless conical defects in Minkowski and de Sitter spaces in various spacetime dimensions. The energy-momentum of a defect, considered as an (extended) relativistic object, is completely characterized by the holonomy of the connection associated with its spacetime metric. The possible holonomies are given by Lorentz group elements, which are rotations and null rotations for massive and massless defects respectively. In particular, if we fix the direction of propagation of a massless defect in n+1-dimensional Minkowski space, then its space of holonomies is a maximal abeli…
In this paper I discuss the formation of topological defects in quantum field theory and the relation between fractals and coherent states. The study of defect formation is particularly useful in the understanding of the same mathematical structure of quantum field theory with particular reference to the processes of non-equilibrium symmetry breaking. The functional realization of fractals in terms of the q-deformed algebra of coherent states is also presented. From one side, this sheds some light on the dynamical formation of fractals. From the other side, it also exhibits the fractal nature …
We study the regular surface defect in the Omega-deformed four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory with gauge group SU(N) with 2N hypermultiplets in fundamental representation. We prove its vacuum expectation value obeys the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation for the 4-point conformal block of current algebra of a two-dimensional conformal field theory. The level and the vertex operators are determined by the parameters of the Omega-background and the masses of the hypermultiplets; the cross-ratio of the 4 points is determined by the complexified gauge coupling. We clarify that in a somewhat …
