Quantum gravity theories predict a minimal length at the order of magnitude of the Planck length, under which the concepts of space and time lose every physical meaning. In quantum mechanics, the insurgence of such minimal length can be described by introducing a modified position-momentum commutator, which in turn yields a generalized uncertainty principle, where the uncertainty on the position measurement has a lower bound. The value of the minimal length is not predicted by theories and must be evaluated experimentally. In this paper, we address the quantum bound to estimability of the minimal uncertainty length by performing measurements on a harmonic oscillator, which is analytically solvable in the deformed algebra of the Hilbert subspace.
A minimal observable length is a common feature of theories that aim to merge quantum physics and gravity. Quantum mechanically, this concept is associated to a nonzero minimal uncertainty in position measurements, which is encoded in deformed commutation relations. In spite of increasing theoretical interest, the subject suffers from the complete lack of dedicated experiments and bounds to the deformation parameters are roughly extrapolated from indirect measurements. As recently proposed, low-energy mechanical oscillators could allow to reveal the effect of a modified commutator. Here we ana…
For the two-parameter $p,q$-deformed Heisenberg algebra introduced recently and in which, instead of usual commutator of $X$ and $P$ in the l.h.s. of basic relation $[X,P] = {\rm i}\hbar$, one uses the $p,q$-commutator, we established interesting properties. Most important is the realizability of the $p,q$-deformed Heisenberg algebra by means of the appropriate deformed oscillator algebra. Another uncovered property is special extension of the usual mutual Hermitian conjugation of the creation and annihilation operators, namely the so-called $η(N)$-pseudo-Hermitian conjugation rule, along with…
We examine a deformed quantum mechanics in which the commutator between coordinates and momenta is a function of momenta. The Jacobi identity constraint on a two-parameter class of such modified commutation relations (MCR's) shows that they encode an intrinsic maximum momentum; a sub-class of which also imply a minimum position uncertainty. Maximum momentum causes the bound state spectrum of the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator to terminate at finite energy, whereby classical characteristics are observed for the studied cases. We then use a semi-classical analysis to discuss general concave…
Resonance plays critical roles in the formation of many physical phenomena, and many techniques have been developed for the exploration of resonance. In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 062502 (2016)], we proposed a new method for probing single-particle resonances by solving the Dirac equation in complex momentum representation for spherical nuclei. Here, we extend this method to deformed nuclei with theoretical formalism presented. We elaborate numerical details, and calculate the bound and resonant states in $^{37}$Mg. The results are compared with those from the coordinate representa…
The symmetrization postulate and the associated Bose/Fermi (anti)-commutators for field mode operators are among the pillars on which local quantum field theory lays its foundations. They ultimately determine the structure of Fock space and are closely connected with the local properties of the fields and with the action of symmetry generators on observables and states. We here show that the quantum field theory describing relativistic particles coupled to three dimensional Einstein gravity as a topological defect must be constructed using a deformed algebra of creation and annihilation operat…
We analyze the position and momentum uncertainties of the energy eigenstates of the harmonic oscillator in the context of a deformed quantum mechanics, namely, that in which the commutator between the position and momentum operators is given by [x,p]=i\hbar(1+βp^2). This deformed commutation relation leads to the minimal length uncertainty relation Δx > (\hbar/2)(1/Δp +βΔp), which implies that Δx ~ 1/Δp at small Δp while Δx ~ Δp at large Δp. We find that the uncertainties of the energy eigenstates of the normal harmonic oscillator (m>0), derived in Ref. [1], only populate the Δx ~ 1/Δp branch.…
A proof is given that an invertible and a unitary operator can be used to reproduce the effect of a q-deformed commutator of annihilation and creation operators. In other words, the original annihilation and creation operators are mapped into new operators, not conjugate to each other, whose standard commutator equals the identity plus a correction proportional to the original number operator. The consistency condition for the existence of this new set of operators is derived, by exploiting the Stone theorem on 1-parameter unitary groups. The above scheme leads to modified equations of motion …

We study the geometry dependence of the Casimir energy for deformed metal plates by a path integral quantization of the electromagnetic field. For the first time, we give a complete analytical result for the deformation induced change in Casimir energy δ\cal E in an experimentally testable, nontrivial geometry, consisting of a flat and a corrugated plate. Our results show an interesting crossover for δ\cal E as a function of the ratio of the mean plate distance H, to the corrugation length λ: For λ\ll H we find a {\em slower} decay \sim H^{-4}, compared to the H^{-5} behavior predicted by the …
The well-known Heisenberg--Robertson uncertainty relation for a pair of noncommuting observables, is expressed in terms of the product of variances and the commutator among the operators, computed for the quantum state of a system. Different modified commutation relations have been considered in the last years with the purpose of taking into account the effect of quantum gravity. Indeed it can be seen that letting $[X,P] = i\hbar (1+βP^2)$ implies the existence of a minimal length proportional to $\sqrtβ$. The Bialynicki-Birula--Mycielski entropic uncertainty relation in terms of Shannon entro…
Scar states are special many-body eigenstates that weakly violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). Using the explicit formalism of the Lanczos algorithm, usually known as the forward scattering approximation in this context, we compute the Krylov state (spread) complexity of typical states generated by the time evolution of the PXP Hamiltonian, hosting such states. We show that the complexity for the Neel state revives in an approximate sense, while complexity for the generic ETH-obeying state always increases. This can be attributed to the approximate SU(2) structure of the cor…
The fundamental physical description of Nature is based on two mutually incompatible theories: Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity. Their unification in a theory of Quantum Gravity (QG) remains one of the main challenges of theoretical physics. Quantum Gravity Phenomenology (QGP) studies QG effects in low-energy systems. The basis of one such phenomenological model is the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP), which is a modified Heisenberg uncertainty relation and predicts a deformed canon ical commutator. In this thesis, we compute Planck-scale corrections to angular momentum eigenval…
The unification of quantum mechanics and gravity remains as one of the primary challenges of present-day physics. Quantum-gravity-inspired phenomenological models offer a window to explore potential aspects of quantum gravity including qualitatively new behaviour that can be experimentally tested. One such phenomenological model is the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP), which predicts a modified Heisenberg uncertainty relation and a deformed canonical commutator. It was recently shown that optomechanical systems offer significant promise to put stringent experimental bounds on such model…
Thermal decoherence is a major obstacle to the realization of quantum coherence for massive mechanical oscillators. Although optical trapping has been used to reduce the thermal decoherence rate for such oscillators, it also increases the rate by subjecting the oscillator to stochastic forces resulting from the frequency fluctuations of the optical field, thereby setting a fundamental limit on the reduction. This is analogous to the noise penalty in an active feedback system. Here, we directly measure the rethermalizaton process for an initially cooled and optically trapped suspended mirror, a…
System identification is an integrant part of control theory and plays an increasing role in quantum engineering. In the quantum set-up, system identification is usually equated to process tomography, i.e. estimating a channel by probing it repeatedly with different input states. However for quantum dynamical systems like quantum Markov processes, it is more natural to consider the estimation based on continuous measurements of the output, with a given input which may be stationary. We address this problem using asymptotic statistics tools, for the specific example of estimating the Rabi frequ…
