We show that by combining the elementary-Goldstone-Higgs scenario and supersymmetry it is possible to raise the scale of supersymmetry breaking to several TeVs by relating it to the spontaneous-symmetry-breaking one. This is achieved by first enhancing the global symmetries of the super-Higgs sector to SU(4) and then embedding the electroweak sector and the Standard-Model fermions. We determine the conditions under which the model achieves a vacuum such that the resulting Higgs is a pseudo-Goldstone boson. The main results are: the supersymmetry-breaking scale is identified with the spontaneous-symmetry-breaking scale of SU(4) which is several TeVs above the radiatively induced electroweak scale; intriguingly the global symmetry of the Higgs sector predicts the existence of two super-Higgs multiplets with one mass eigenstate playing the role of the pseudo-Goldstone Higgs; the symmetry-breaking dynamics fixes $\tan β= 1$ and requires a supplementary singlet chiral superfield. We finally discuss the spectrum of the model that now features superpartners of the Standard-Model fermions and gauge bosons in the multi-TeV range.
We argue that supersymmetry with its well known advantages, such as naturalness, grand unification and dark matter candidate seems to possess one more attractive feature: it may trigger, through its own spontaneous violation in the visible sector, a dynamical generation of gauge fields as massless Nambu-Goldstone modes during which physical Lorentz invariance itself is ultimately preserved. We consider the supersymmetric QED model extended by an arbitrary polynomial potential of massive vector superfield that breaks gauge invariance in the SUSY invariant phase. However, the requirement of vacu…
Many models of meta-stable supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking lead to a very light scalar pseudo-Nambu Goldstone boson (PNGB), P, associated with spontaneous breakdown of a baryon number like symmetry in the hidden sector. Current particle physics data provide no useful constraints on the existence of P. For example, the predicted decay rates for both K --> pi + P, b--> s + P and Upsilon --> photon + P are many orders of magnitude below the present experimental bounds. We also consider astrophysical implications of the PNGB and find a significant constraint from its effect on the evolution of red g…
We briefly review the GIFT (Goltstones instead of Fine Tuning) mechanism which provides a promising solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem and some other puzzles of the supersymmetric grand unification as are the $μ$-problem, the fermion mass problem, etc. It can be naturally implemented by extending the minimal SUSY SU(5) model to the gauge SU(6) theory.
We construct a 5D SUSY SU(6) GUT on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2\tm Z_2'$ orbifold. The first stage of gauge symmetry breaking occurs through compactification and a specific selection of boundary conditions. Additional symmetries play a crucial role for the generation of $μ$ and $Bμ$ terms of appropriate values: with a $SU(2)_{cus}$ custodial symmetry the Higgs doublets naturally emerge as massless pseudo-Goldstone bosons in the unbroken SUSY limit. After SUSY breaking they get masses of the order of the weak scale. If instead of $SU(2)_{cus}$ a discrete $Z_5$ symmetry is applied the Higgs doublet's masses…
We present a novel way of realizing the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson mechanism at all orders in perturbation theory, for the doublet-triplet splitting in supersymmetric grand unified theories. The global symmetries of the Higgs sector are attributed to a non-vectorlike Higgs content, which is consistent with unbroken supersymmetry in a scenario with flat extra dimensions and branes. We also show how in such a model one can naturally obtain a realistic pattern for the Standard Model fermion masses and mixings.
New SUSY thought is presented. Maximal stop mixing needed for 125 GeV Higgs is linked to the tachyonic stop at the UV boundary. Large $μ$ does not mean the severe fine tuning if Higgs comes out as a pseudo-Goldstone boson. The small mass of the pseudo-Goldstone Higgs is overcome with extra vector-like fermions needed to explain the Higgs to di-photon rates.
We revisit the minimal Nambu-Goldstone (NG) Higgs supersymmetric (SUSY) SU(5) grand unified model and study its phenomenological implications. The Higgs sector of the model possesses a global SU(6) symmetry, which is spontaneously broken and results in the Higgs doublets of the minimal SUSY Standard Model (MSSM) as NG chiral superfields. Therefore, the model naturally leads to light Higgs doublets and solves the doublet-triplet splitting problem. Because of the SU(6) symmetry, the couplings of the Higgs sector are tightly restricted, and thus the model is more predictive than the minimal SUSY …
Models with Dirac gauginos provide appealing scenarios for physics beyond the standard model. They have smaller radiative corrections to the Higgs mass, a suppression of certain SUSY production processes, and ameliorated flavor constraints. Unfortunately, they also generally have tachyons, the solutions to which typically spoil these positive features. The recently proposed "Goldstone Gaugino" mechanism provides a simple solution that eliminates these tachyonic states. We provide details on this mechanism and explore models for its origin. In particular, we find SUSY QCD models that realize th…
We construct the minimal effective field theory (EFT) of supersymmetric inflation, whose field content is a real scalar, the goldstone for time-translation breaking, and a Weyl fermion, the goldstino for supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking. The inflating background can be viewed as a single SUSY-breaking sector, and the degrees of freedom can be efficiently parameterized using constrained superfields. Our EFT is comprised of a chiral superfield X_NL containing the goldstino and satisfying X_NL^2 = 0, and a real superfield B_NL containing both the goldstino and the goldstone, satisfying X_NL B_NL = B…
We solve the Goldstone modes in the renormalizable SUSY SO(10) model with general couplings. The Goldstones are expressed by the Vacuum Expectation Values and the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of relevant symmetries without explicit dependence on the parameters of the model.
We argue that a generic trigger for photon and other gauge fields to emerge as massless Nambu-Goldstone modes could be spontaneously broken supersymmetry rather than physically manifested Lorentz violation. We consider supersymmetric QED model extended by an arbitrary polynomial potential of vector superfield that induces the spontaneous SUSY violation in the visible sector. As a consequence, massless photon appears as a companion of massless photino being Goldstone fermion state in tree approximation. Remarkably, the photon masslessness appearing at tree level is further protected against rad…
SUSY breaking without messenger fields is proposed. We assume that our world is on a wall and SUSY is broken only by the coexistence of another wall with some distance from our wall. The Nambu-Goldstone fermion is localized on the distant wall. Its overlap with the wave functions of physical fields on our wall gives the mass splitting of physical fields on our wall thanks to a low-energy theorem. We propose that this overlap provides a practical method to evaluate mass splitting in models with SUSY breaking due to the coexisting walls.
We construct an extension of the MSSM in which superpartners can naturally be heavier than the electroweak scale. This ``little hierarchy'' of scales is stable because the Higgs arises as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson in the breaking of an accidental SU(4) symmetry of the Higgs sector. Supersymmetry and the global symmetry combine to forbid logarithmically divergent one-loop contributions to the Higgs mass. The accidental symmetry follows from a simple ``twin'' parity which exchanges the SU(2) sectors in the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_X gauge group.
We provide an example of a 4D theory that exhibits the Contino-Pomarol-Rattazzi mechanism, where breaking conformal symmetry by an almost marginal operator leads to a light pseudo-Goldstone boson, the dilaton, and a parametrically suppressed contribution to vacuum energy. We consider SUSY QCD at the edge of the conformal window and break conformal symmetry by weakly gauging a subgroup of the flavor symmetry. Using Seiberg duality we show that for a range of parameters the singlet meson in the dual theory reaches the unitarity bound, however, this theory does not have a stable vacuum. We stabil…
Recent progress in realising dynamical supersymmetry breaking allows the construction of simple and calculable models of gauge mediation. We discuss the phenomenology of the particularly minimal case in which the mediation is direct, and show that there are generic new and striking predictions. These include new particles with masses comparable to those of the Standard Model superpartners, associated with the pseudo-Goldstone modes of the dynamical SUSY breaking sector. Consequently there is an unavoidable departure from the MSSM. In addition the gaugino masses are typically significantly ligh…
A promising solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem of SUSY GUT's is the Higgs as pseudo-Goldstone boson mechanism. We present two models which naturally implement this idea and extend one of them to include fermion masses. We examine the phenomenological consequences of this mechanism and present the favored parameter region.
We point out that a hypothesis of squarks and sleptons being Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons is consistent with pure gravity mediation or minimal split supersymmetry (SUSY). As a concrete example, we consider a SUSY $E_7/SU(5) \times U(1)^3$ non-linear sigma model in the framework of pure gravity mediation. The model accommodates three families of the quark and lepton chiral multiplets as (pseudo) NG multiplets of the Kahler manifold, which may enable us to understand the origin and number of the families. We point out that squarks in the first and second generations are likely to be as light as a…
Models of supersymmetry with Dirac gauginos provide an attractive scenario for physics beyond the standard model. The "supersoft" radiative corrections and suppressed SUSY production at colliders provide for more natural theories and an understanding of why no new states have been seen. Unfortunately, these models are handicapped by a tachyon which is naturally present in existing models of Dirac gauginos. We argue that this tachyon is absent, with the phenomenological successes of the model preserved, if the right handed gaugino is a (pseudo-)Goldstone field of a spontaneously broken anomalou…
We construct a calculable model of electroweak symmetry breaking in which the Higgs doublet emerges from the meta-stable SUSY breaking sector as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson. The Higgs boson mass is further protected by the little Higgs mechanism, and naturally suppressed by a two-loop factor from the SUSY breaking scale of 10 TeV. Gaugino and sfermion masses arise from standard gauge mediation, but the Higgsino obtains a tree-level mass at the SUSY breaking scale. At 1 TeV, aside from new gauge bosons and fermions similar to other little Higgs models and their superpartners, our model predi…
We study the consequences of combining SUSY with a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson Higgs coming from an SO(5)/SO(4) coset and partial compositeness. In particular, we focus on how electroweak symmetry breaking and the Higgs mass are reproduced in models where the symmetry SO(5) is linearly realized. The global symmetry forbids tree-level contributions to the Higgs potential coming from D-terms, differently from what happens in most of the SUSY little-Higgs constructions. While the stops are generally heavy, light fermion top partners below 1 TeV are predicted. In contrast to what happens in non-S…
We study the Higgs potential of the next-to-minimal renormalizable SUSY SO(10) GUT with 120 Higgs representation on top of the "standard" minimal model Higgs sector spanning over 10, 126bar+126 and 210. All the GUT-scale Higgs sector mass matrices for the 592 Higgs states of the model are written down in detail with all the conventions fully specified. The consistency of the results is checked by the decoupling of 120 and independently by the analysis of the relevant Goldstone modes. The matching of the Yukawa sector sum-rules driving the matter fermion masses and mixing at the level of the ef…
There are few robust solutions to the doublet-triplet splitting problem in supersymmetric GUT theories. One of the more promising solutions is the Higgs as pseudo-Goldstone boson mechanism. In its minimal implementation, such a solution places an additional restriction on the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. A testable consequence of this constraint is an equation for $\tan β$. We present this restriction and study its solutions in order to constrain the allowed parameter space. Thus the assumptions on the GUT scale Higgs sector should yield testable predictions fo…
In the context of a Coleman-Weinberg mechanism for the Higgs boson mass, we address the strong CP problem. We show that a DFSZ-like invisible axion model with a gauge-singlet complex scalar field S, whose couplings to the Standard Model are naturally ultra-weak, can solve the strong CP problem and simultaneously generate acceptable electroweak symmetry breaking. The ultra-weak couplings of the singlet S are associated with underlying approximate shift symmetries that act as custodial symmetries and maintain technical naturalness. The model also contains a very light pseudo-Goldstone dilaton th…
It is shown that the recently proposed preon model which provides a unified origin of the diverse mass scale and an explanation of family replication as well as of inter-family mass-hierarchy, possesses a Peccei-Quinn symmetry whose spontaneous breaking leads to an automatic invisible axion. Existence of the PQ-symmetry is simply a consequence of supersymmetry and requirement of minimality in the field-content and interactions, which propose that the lagrangian should possess only those terms which are dictated by the gauge principle and no others. In addition to the axion, the model also gene…
The calculation of the Higgs mass in general renormalisable field theories has been plagued by the so-called "Goldstone Boson Catastrophe", where light (would-be) Goldstone bosons give infra-red divergent loop integrals. In supersymmetric models, previous approaches included a workaround that ameliorated the problem for most, but not all, parameter space regions; while giving divergent results everywhere for non-supersymmetric models! We present an implementation of a general solution to the problem in the public code SARAH, along with new calculations of some necessary loop integrals and gene…
We present a solution to the $μ$ problem in an SO(10) supersymmetric grand unified (SUSY GUT) model with gauge mediated (GMSB) and D-term supersymmetry breaking. A Peccei-Quinn ({\bf PQ}) symmetry is broken at the messenger scale and enables the generation of the $μ$ term. The invisible axion (Goldstone boson of {\bf PQ} symmetry breaking) is a cold dark matter candidate. At low energy, our model leads to a phenomenologically acceptable version of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with novel particle phenomenology. Either the gluino or the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetri…
The supersymmetric $SU(6)$ model accompanied by the flavour-blind discrete symmetry $Z_3$ can succesfully deal with such key problems of SUSY GUTs, as are the gauge hierarchy/doublet-triplet splitting, $μ$-problem and flavour problem. The Higgs doublets arise as Goldstone modes of the spontaneously broken {\em accidental} global $SU(6)\times U(6)$ symmetry of the Higgs superpotential. Their couplings to fermions have peculiarities leading to the consistent picture of the quark and lepton masses and mixing, without invoking any of horizontal symmetry/zero texture concepts. In particular, the on…
The calculation of finite temperature contributions to the scalar potential in a quantum field theory is similar to the calculation of loop corrections at zero temperature. In natural extensions of the Standard Model where loop corrections to the Higgs potential cancel between Standard Model degrees of freedom and their symmetry partners, it is interesting to contemplate whether finite temperature corrections also cancel, raising the question of whether a broken phase of electroweak symmetry may persist at high temperature. It is well known that this does not happen in supersymmetric theories …
We provide an interpretation of the recent ATLAS diboson excess in terms of a class of supersymmetric models in which the scale of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking is in the few TeV range. The particle responsible for the excess is the scalar superpartner of the Goldstone fermion associated with SUSY breaking, the sgoldstino. This scalar couples strongly to the Standard Model vector bosons and weakly to the fermions, with all coupling strengths determined by ratios of soft SUSY breaking parameters over the SUSY breaking scale. Explaining the ATLAS excess selects particular relations and ranges fo…
Natural supersymmetric theories of the weak scale are under growing pressure given present LHC constraints, raising the question of whether untuned supersymmetric (SUSY) solutions to the hierarchy problem are possible. In this paper, we explore a class of 5-dimensional natural SUSY theories in which SUSY is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. We pedagogically explain how Scherk-Schwarz elegantly solves the traditional problems of 4-dimensional SUSY theories (based on the MSSM and its many variants) that usually result in an unsettling level of fine-tuning. The minimal Scherk-Schwarz set up…
The missing VEV solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem in general SU(N) SUSY GUTs is found. Remarkably enough, it requires a strict equality of numbers of the fundamental colours and flavours in SU(N) and for the even-order groups (N=2k) gives the predominant breaking channel $SU(N) \to SU(k-1)_c\otimes SU(k-1)_f\otimes SU(2)_w\otimes U(1)\otimes U(1)'$ in the parameter natural area. The flavour subsymmetry breaking owing to some generic string inspired extra symmetries of the Higgs superpotential appears not to affect markedly the basic adjoint vacuum configuration in the model. Th…
We explore naturalness constraints on the masses of the heavy Higgs bosons H^0, H^+/-, and A^0 in supersymmetric theories. We show that, in any extension of MSSM which accommodates the 125 GeV Higgs at the tree level, one can derive an upper bound on the SUSY Higgs masses from naturalness considerations. As is well-known for the MSSM, these bounds become weak at large tan beta. However, we show that measurements of b to s gamma together with naturalness arguments lead to an upper bound on tan beta, strengthening the naturalness case for heavy Higgs states near the TeV scale. The precise bound …
We present a new focus point supersymemtry breaking scenario based on the supersymmetric $E_7$ non-linear sigma model. In this non-linear sigma model, squarks and sleptons are identified with (pseudo) Nambu-Goldstone bosons. Their masses are generated only radiatively through gauge and yukawa interactions, and they are much smaller than the gravitino and gaugino masses at a high energy scale. On the other hand, Higgs doublets belong to matter multiplets and hence may have unsuppressed supersymmetry-breaking soft masses. We consider their masses to be equal to the gravitino mass at the high ene…
In a SUSY theory with a spontaneously broken global symmetry, G, if the scale of SUSY breaking, $M_s$ is smaller than the scale $M_G$ of the global symmetry, the Nambu-Goldstone boson, $χ$ is accompanied by two massive superpartners ( a fermionic, $Ψ_χ$ and a scalar $σ_χ$) with mass of order $M_s$. Cosmological considerations imply stringent constraints on the couplings of $Ψ_χ$ and $σ_χ$. Application of these considerations to the supersymmetric singlet Majoron model leads to an upper limit on the scale $V_{BL}$ of global $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry to be less than $10^4 GeV$, for resonable values …
The supersymmetric $SU(6)$ model equipped by the flavour-blind discrete gauge symmetry $Z_3$ is considered. It provides simultaneous solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem, $μ$-problem and leads to natural understanding of fermion flavour. The Higgs doublets arise as Goldstone modes of the spontaneously broken {\em accidental} global symmetry $SU(6)\times U(6)$ of the Higgs superpotential. Their couplings to fermions have peculiarities leading to the consistent picture of the quark and lepton masses and mixing, without invoking the horizontal symmetry or zero texture concepts. In pa…
We propose a simple gauge extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), where the fine tuning in the Higgs mass parameters is highly reduced. The Higgs boson is insensitive to high energies because of supersymmetry and also because it is a pseudo-Goldstone boson of a global symmetry (referred to as double protection or super-little Higgs mechanism). A large shift in the Higgs quartic self coupling is obtained via a non-decoupling D-term coming from an extra gauge group, resulting in a Higgs that can be as heavy as 135 GeV with a tuning milder than 10%. With an appropriate choi…
This doctoral thesis addresses aspects of Supersymmetry (Susy) phenomenology. In addition to previously published work, it contains introductions to the following topics: from classical mechanics to quantum field theory for the more casual reader, electroweak naturalness, the Higgs as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson, the MSSM and NMSSM, simple and less simple models of gauge-mediated Susy breaking (GMSB), collider searches for Susy and other new theories, transverse mass observables with missing energy, and Brazil-band plots. The previously published work is as follows. The optimally natural Hi…
The superfield propagator contains a measurable quantum leap, which comes from the definition of SUSY. In the sfermion -> Goldstino + fermion vertex change: 1. the spin of sparticle with discrete 1/2, 2. the Grassman superspace with the Goldstino shift operator. 3. the spacetime as the result of extra dimensional leap. The leap nature of SUSY transformations appears in the squark decay, it is the analog definition of SUSY. The quantum leaped outgoing propagators are determined and break locally the energy and the charge. Like to the teleportation the entangled pairs are here the b quark and th…
We introduce a new model, the Pyramid Scheme, of direct mediation of SUSY breaking, which is compatible with the idea of Cosmological SUSY Breaking (CSB). It uses the trinification scheme of grand unification and avoids problems with Landau poles in standard model gauge couplings. It also avoids problems, which have recently come to light, associated with rapid stellar cooling due to emission of the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone Boson (PNGB) of spontaneously broken hidden sector baryon number. With a certain pattern of R-symmetry breaking masses, a pattern more or less required by CSB, the Pyramid Sc…
Given the increasingly more stringent bounds on Supersymmetry (SUSY) from the LHC searches, we are motivated to explore the situation in which the only accessible SUSY states are the electroweakinos (charginos and neutralinos). In the minimal SUSY framework, we systematically study the three general scenarios classified by the relative size of the gaugino mass parameters M_1, M_2 and the Higgsino mass parameter μ, with six distinctive cases, four of which would naturally result in a compressed spectrum of nearly degenerate LSPs. We present the relevant decay branching fractions and provide ins…
We study the effective theory of a generic class of hidden sectors where supersymmetry is broken together with an approximate R-symmetry at low energy. The light spectrum contains the gravitino and the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of the R-symmetry, the R-axion. We derive new model-independent constraints on the R-axion decay constant for R-axion masses ranging from GeV to TeV, which are of relevance for hadron colliders, lepton colliders and B-factories. The current bounds allow for the exciting possibility that the first sign of SUSY will be the R-axion. We point out its most distinctive sig…
It is challenging to explain the tentative 125 GeV Higgs signal in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) without introducing excessive fine-tuning, and this motivates the study of non-minimal implementations of low energy supersymmetry (SUSY). A term λSH_uH_d involving a Standard Model (SM) singlet state S leads to an additional source for the quartic interaction raising the mass of the lightest SM-like Higgs. However, in order to achieve m_h \approx 125 GeV with light stops and small stop mixing, it is necessary for λ\gtrsim 0.7 and consequently λmay become non-perturbative before …
