We provide an example of a 4D theory that exhibits the Contino-Pomarol-Rattazzi mechanism, where breaking conformal symmetry by an almost marginal operator leads to a light pseudo-Goldstone boson, the dilaton, and a parametrically suppressed contribution to vacuum energy. We consider SUSY QCD at the edge of the conformal window and break conformal symmetry by weakly gauging a subgroup of the flavor symmetry. Using Seiberg duality we show that for a range of parameters the singlet meson in the dual theory reaches the unitarity bound, however, this theory does not have a stable vacuum. We stabilize the vacuum with soft breaking terms, compute the mass of the dilaton, and determine the range of parameters where the leading contribution to the dilaton mass is from the almost marginal coupling.
We investigate unparticle physics with supersymmetry (SUSY). The SUSY breaking effects due to the gravity mediation induce soft masses for the SUSY unparticles and hence break the conformal invariance. The unparticle physics observable in near future experiments is only consistent if the SUSY breaking effects from the hidden sector to the standard model sector are dominated by the gauge mediation, or if the SUSY breaking effects to the unparticle sector is sufficiently sequestered. We argue that the natural realization of the latter possibility is the conformal sequestering scenario.
We extend our models for conformal sequestering of dynamical supersymmetry breaking with decoupling vector-like matter in several different ways. These extensions enable us to simplify concrete model building, in particular, rendering large gauge group and ad hoc global symmetry for sequestering unnecessary. Conformal sequestering appears highly natural in such circumstances.
We reinterpret the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) boundary condition for SU(2)_R in a compactified five-dimensional (5D) Poincare supergravity in terms of the twisted SU(2)_U gauge fixing in 5D conformal supergravity. In such translation, only the compensator hypermultiplet is relevant to the SS twist, and various properties of the SS mechanism can be easily understood. Especially, we show the correspondence between the SS twist and constant superpotentials within our framework.
Anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking in the context of 4D conformally sequestered models is combined with Poppitz-Trivedi D-type gauge-mediation. The implementation of the two mediation mechanisms naturally leads to visible soft masses at the same scale so that they can cooperatively solve the mu and flavor problems of weak scale supersymmetry, as well as the tachyonic slepton problem of pure anomaly-mediation. The tools are developed in a modular fashion for more readily fitting into the general program of optimizing supersymmetric dynamics in hunting for the most attractive weak scale phe…
By extending a previously proposed conformal gauge mediation model, we construct a gauge-mediated SUSY breaking (GMSB) model where a SUSY-breaking scale, a messenger mass, the $μ$-parameter and the gravitino mass in a minimal supersymmetric (SUSY) Standard Model (MSSM) are all explained by a single mass scale, a R-symmetry breaking scale. We focus on a low scale SUSY-breaking scenario with the gravitino mass $m_{3/2}=\mathcal{O}(1){\rm eV}$, which is free from the cosmological gravitino problem and relaxes the fine-tuning of the cosmological constant. Both the messenger and SUSY-breaking secto…
If the supersymmetry (SUSY) is a solution to the hierarchy problem, it is puzzling that any SUSY particle has not been discovered yet. We show that there is a low-scale conformal gauge mediation model which contains all necessary ingredients, i.e. not only a SUSY-breaking dynamics and a gauge mediation mechanism, but also a candidate for the dark matter. The model has only one free parameter, that is, the mass for messengers. In this model, the dark matter is provided by a composite particle in the SUSY-breaking sector, and the observed value of the dark matter density uniquely fixes the mass …
We study N=1 global and local supersymmetric theories with a continuous global U(1)_R symmetry. We discuss conditions for supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking and vacuum structures of R-symmetric SUSY models. Especially we find the conditions for R-symmetry breaking and runway vacua in global supersymmetric theories. We introduce explicit R-symmetry breaking terms into such models in global and local supersymmetric theories. We classify explicit R-symmetry breaking terms by the structure of newly appeared SUSY stationary points as a consequence of the R-breaking effect. Based on the generic argument,…
We study an exactly marginal deformation of N=4 SUSY Yang-Mills with gauge group U(N) using field theory and string theory methods. The classical theory has a Higgs branch for rational values of the deformation parameter. We argue that the quantum theory also has an S-dual confining branch which cannot be seen classically. The low-energy effective theory on these branches is a six-dimensional non-commutative gauge theory with sixteen supercharges. Confinement of magnetic and electric charges, on the Higgs and confining branches respectively, occurs due to the formation of BPS-saturated strings…
We consider SUSY sine-Gordon theory in the framework of perturbed conformal field theory. Using an argument from Zamolodchikov, we obtain the vacuum structure and the kink adjacency diagram of the theory, which is cross-checked against the exact S matrix prediction, first-order perturbed conformal field theory (PCFT), the NLIE method and truncated conformal space approach. We provide evidence for consistency between the usual Lagrangian description and PCFT on the one hand, and between PCFT, NLIE and a massgap formula conjectured by Baseilhac and Fateev, on the other. In addition, we extend th…
We present explicit recursive relations for the four-point superconformal block functions that are essentially particular contributions of the given conformal class to the four-point correlation function. The approach is based on the analytic properties of the superconformal blocks as functions of the conformal dimensions and the central charge of the superconformal algebra. The results are compared with the explicit analytic expressions obtained for special parameter values corresponding to the truncated operator product expansion. These recursive relations are an efficient tool for numerical…
We determine the exact vacuum structure of a marginal deformation of N=4 SUSY Yang-Mills with gauge group U(N). The Coulomb branch of the theory consists of several sub-branches which are governed by complex curves of the form Sigma_{n_{1}} U Sigma_{n_{2}} U Sigma_{n_{3}} of genus N=n_{1}+n_{2}+n_{3}. Each sub-branch intersects with a family of Higgs and Confining branches permuted by SL(2,Z) transformations. We determine the curve by solving a related matrix model in the planar limit according to the prescription of Dijkgraaf and Vafa, and also by explicit instanton calculations using a form …
We consider the problem of computing N=2 superconformal block functions. We argue that the Kazama-Suzuki coset realization of N=2 superconformal algebra in terms of the affine sl(2) algebra provides relations between N=2 and affine sl(2) conformal blocks. We show that for N=2 chiral fields the corresponding sl(2) construction of the conformal blocks is based on the ordinary highest weight representation. We use an AGT-type correspondence to relate the four-point sl(2) conformal block with Nekrasov's instanton partition functions of a four-dimensional N=2 SU(2) gauge theory in the presence of a…
We discuss duality in $N=1$ SUSY gauge theories in Seiberg's conformal window, $(3N_c/2)<N_f<3N_c$. The 't Hooft consistency conditions -- the basic tool for establishing the infrared duality -- are considered taking into account higher order $α$ corrections. The conserved (anomaly free) $R$ current is built to all orders in $α$. Although this current contains all orders in $α$ the 't Hooft consistency conditions for this current are shown to be one-loop. This observation thus justifies Seiberg's matching procedure. We also briefly discuss the inequivalence of the ``electric" and ``magnetic" t…
Direct gauge mediation models using the Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih (ISS) metastable vacua suffer from the Landau pole problem of the standard model gauge couplings and the existence of R symmetry forbidding gaugino masses. These problems may be solved by using the recently proposed SUSY breaking models in a conformal window of the vector-like $SU(N_C)$ gauge theory with gauge singlets. In this paper we propose a model of gauge mediation based on the SUSY-breaking model in the conformal window, and study the dynamics for the SUSY breaking. In the model, there are massive vector-like bifundamenta…
In two dimensions, it is well known that the scale invariance can be considered as conformal invariance. However, there is no solid proof of this equivalence in four or higher dimensions. We address this issue in the context of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SUSY theories. The SUSY version of dilatation current for theories without conserved $R$ symmetry is constructed through the FZ-multiplet. We discover that the scale-invariant SUSY theory is also conformal when the real superfield in the dilatation current multiplet is conserved. Otherwise, it is only scale-invariant, despite of the transformation of …
We propose a new chiral model of metastable supersymmetry breaking in the conformal window via chiral/nonchiral Seiberg duality, which is focused on Spin(7)/SU(N_f-4) duality in this letter. Following the approach of Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih model, a small mass perturbation in the nonchiral theory leads to supersymmetry breaking by rank condition in the chiral dual description.
We study the conformal dimensions of the would-be dual operators to the stabilized moduli for two non-supersymmetric DGKT vacua. For the first of them, related to the standard SUSY DGKT vacuum by $G_4=-G_4^{\text{SUSY}}$, we obtain integer conformal dimensions. For the second of them, which has a non-zero harmonic component in $G_2$, we obtain both integers and real numbers.
Renormalization of the inverse square potential usually breaks its classical conformal invariance. In a strongly attractive potential, the scaling symmetry is broken to a discrete subgroup while, in a strongly repulsive potential, it is preserved at quantum level. In the intermediate, weak-medium range of the coupling, an anomalous length scale appears due to a flow of the renormalization group away from a critical point. We show that potentials with couplings in the strongly-repulsive and in the weak-medium ranges can be related by a dynamical supersymmetry. Imposing SUSY invariance unifies t…
Quantum field theories with exact but spontaneously broken conformal invariance have an intriguing feature: their vacuum energy (cosmological constant) is equal to zero. Up to now, the only known ultraviolet complete theories where conformal symmetry can be spontaneously broken were associated with supersymmetry (SUSY), with the most prominent example being the $\mathcal N$=4 SUSY Yang-Mills. In this Letter we show that the recently proposed conformal "fishnet" theory supports at the classical level a rich set of flat directions (moduli) along which conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken. …
We find a class of four dimensional deformed conformal field theories which appear extra dimensional when their gauge symmetries are spontaneously broken. The theories are supersymmetric moose models which flow to interacting conformal fixed points at low energies, deformed by superpotentials. Using a-maximization we give strong nonperturbative evidence that the hopping terms in the resulting latticized action are relevant deformations of the fixed point theories. These theories have an intricate structure of RG flows between conformal fixed points. Our results suggest that at the stable fixed…
We use Lightcone Conformal Truncation to analyze the RG flow of the two-dimensional supersymmetric Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory, i.e. the theory of a real scalar superfield with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric cubic superpotential. The theory depends on a single dimensionless coupling $\bar{g}$, and is expected to have a critical point at a tuned value $\bar{g}_*$ where it flows in the IR to the Tricritical Ising Model (TIM); the theory spontaneously breaks the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry on one side of this phase transition, and breaks SUSY on the other side. We calculate the spectrum of energies as a fu…
We perform conformal perturbation theory by marginal operators to first order. A suitable renormalization method is needed that makes the conformal invariance of the deformed correlation functions manifest. Combining the embedding space formalism with the dimensional regularization, we explicitly check that the deformed and renormalized two and three point functions are conformally invariant.

The presence of a domain wall is shown to require a tensorial central charge extension of the superconformal algebra. The currents associated with the conformal central charges are constructed as spacetime moments of the SUSY tensorial central charge current. The supercurrent is obtained and it contains the R symmetry current, the SUSY spinor currents, the energy-momentum tensor and the SUSY tensorial central charge currents as its component currents. All tensorial central charge extended superconformal currents are constructed from the supercurrent. The superconformal currents' and the confor…
We consider certain supersymmetric configurations of intersecting branes and branes ending on branes and analyze the duality between their open and closed string interpretation. The examples we study are chosen such that we have the lower dimensional brane realizing an n+1 dimensional conformal field theory on its worldvolume and the higher dimensional one introducing a conformal boundary. We also consider two CFTs, possibly with different central charges, interacting along a common conformal boundary. We show with a probe calculation that the dual closed string description is in terms of grav…
We study models where the superpartners of the ordinary particles have continuous spectra rather than being discrete states, which can occur when the supersymmetric standard model is coupled to an approximately conformal sector. We show that when superpartners that are well into the continuum are produced at a collider they tend to have long decay chains that step their way down through the continuum, emitting many fairly soft standard model particles along the way, with a roughly spherical energy distribution in the center of mass frame.
We present a model of inflation based on the anomaly-induced effective action of gravity in the presence of a conformally invariant Hilbert-Einstein term. Our approach is based on the conformal representation of the fields action and on the integration of the corresponding conformal anomaly. In contradistinction to the original Starobinsky's model, inflation can be stable at the beginning and unstable at the end. The instability is caused by a slowing down of inflation due to quantum effects associated to the massive fermion fields. In supersymmetric theories this mechanism can be linked to th…
We consider the supersymmetry breaking effects on typical inflation models with different types of Kähler potential. The critical size of supersymmetry-breaking scale, above which the flatness of the inflaton potential is spoiled, drastically changes model by model. We present the universal description of such effects in terms of a field-dependent scaling factor by which gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking terms are suppressed or enhanced, based on the conformal supergravity framework. Such a description would be useful when we estimate them in constructing supersymmetric models of particl…
We construct the Next to Leading Order JIMWLK Hamiltonian for high energy evolution in ${\cal N}=4$ SUSY theory, and show that it possesses conformal invariance, even though it is derived using sharp cutoff on rapidity variable. The conformal transformation properties of Wilson lines are not quite the naive ones, but at NLO acquire an additional anomalous piece. We construct explicitly the inversion symmetry generator. We also show how to construct for every operator $O$, including the Hamiltonian itself, its "conformal extension" $\cal O$, such that it transforms under the inversion in the na…
In this letter we would like to apply the superconformal index technique to give one more evidence for the theory proposed by Intriligator, Seiberg and Shenker (ISS) as being described by interacting conformal field theory in its IR fixed point.
d3 and d5 maximally SUSY gauged supergravity is considered in the parametrization (flow) of full scalar coset where the kinetic term for scalars takes the standard field theory form and the bulk potential is an arbitrary one subject to consistent parametrization. From such SG duals we calculate d2 and d4 holographic conformal anomaly which depends on bulk scalars potential. AdS/CFT correspondence suggests that such SG side conformal anomaly should be identified with (non-perturbative) QFT conformal anomaly (taking account of radiative corrections) for the theory living on the boundary of AdS s…
We study the 'goldstini' scenario of Cheung, Nomura, and Thaler, in which multiple independent supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking sectors lead to multiple would-be goldstinos, changing collider and cosmological phenomenology. In supergravity, potentially large corrections to the previous prediction of twice the gravitino mass for goldstini masses can arise when their scalar partners are stabilized far from the origin. Considerations arising from the complexity of realistic string compactifications indicate that many of the independent SUSY-breaking sectors should be conformally sequestered or situa…
The AdS/CFT correspondence is applied to a close analogue of the little hierarchy problem in $AdS_{d+1}$, $d \geq 3$. The new mechanism requires a Maxwell field that gauges a $U(1)_R$ symmetry in a bulk supergravity theory with a negative cosmological constant. Supersymmetry is explicitly broken by a non-local boundary term with dimensionless coupling $h$. Non-locality appears to cause no pathology, and the SUSY breaking deformation engendered is exactly marginal. SUSY breaking effects in the bulk are computed using the $U(1)$ Ward identity. Conformal dimensions and thus masses of scalar and s…
We give a non-trivially interacting field theory example of scale invariant but non-conformal field theory. The model is based on the exactly solvable Liouville field theory coupled with free scalars deformed by an exactly marginal operator. We show non-vanishing of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor by using the quantum Schwinger-Dyson equation for the Liouville field theory, which is a sophistication of the quantum higher equations of motion for the Liouville field theory introduced by Alyosha Zamolodchikov. Possibly dangerous implications for the super-critical string theory will be di…
The presence of a boundary (or defect) in a conformal field theory allows one to generalize the notion of an exactly marginal deformation. Without a boundary, one must find an operator of protected scaling dimension $Δ$ equal to the space-time dimension $d$ of the conformal field theory, while with a boundary, as long as the operator dimension is protected, one can make up for the difference $d-Δ$ by including a factor $z^{Δ-d}$ in the deformation where $z$ is the distance from the boundary. This coordinate dependence does not lead to a reduction in the underlying $SO(d,1)$ global conformal sy…
Motivated by its potential use in constraining the structure of 6D renormalization group flows, we determine the low energy dilaton-axion effective field theory of conformal and global symmetry breaking in 6D conformal field theories (CFTs). While our analysis is largely independent of supersymmetry, we also investigate the case of 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs), where we use the effective action to present a streamlined proof of the 6D a-theorem for tensor branch flows, as well as to constrain properties of Higgs branch and mixed branch flows. An analysis of Higgs branch flows in so…
We investigate the phase diagram of hard-core bosons in two-leg ladders in the presence of soft-shoulder potentials. We show how the competition between local and non-local terms gives rise to a phase diagram with liquid phases with dominant cluster, spin-, and density-wave quasi-long-range ordering. These phases are separated by Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless, Gaussian, and supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum critical transitions. For the latter, we provide a phenomenological description of coupled SUSY conformal field theories, whose predictions are confirmed by matrix-product state simulations. …
We find an asymptotic solution for two- and three-point correlators of local gauge-invariant operators, in a lower-spin sector of massless large-$N$ $QCD$, in terms of glueball and meson propagators, by means of a new purely field-theoretical technique that we call the asymptotically-free bootstrap. The asymptotically-free bootstrap exploits the lowest-order conformal invariance of connected correlators of gauge invariant composite operators in perturbation theory, the renormalization-group improvement, and a recently-proved asymptotic structure theorem for glueball and meson propagators, that…
Just as exactly marginal operators allow to deform a conformal field theory along the space of theories known as the conformal manifold, appropriate operators on conformal defects allow for deformations of the defects. When a defect breaks a global symmetry, there is a contact term in the conservation equation with an exactly marginal defect operator. The resulting defect conformal manifold is the symmetry breaking coset and its Zamolodchikov metric is expressed as the 2-point function of the exactly marginal operator. As the Riemann tensor on the conformal manifold can be expressed as an inte…
We present a detailed study of radion stabilization within 5D conformal SUGRA compactified on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2$ orbifold. We use an effective 4D superfield description developed in our previous work. The effects of tree level bulk and boundary couplings, and in particular of one loop contributions and of a non perturbative correction on the radion stabilization are investigated. We find new examples of radion stabilization in non SUSY and (meta-stable) SUSY preserving Minkowski vacua.
The AGT relations allow one to convert the Zamolodchikov asymptotic formula for the conformal block into the instanton expansion of the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for theory with two colors and four fundamental flavors. This provides an explicit formula for the instanton corrections in this model, resolving in this way an old problem in Seiberg-Witten theory. The answer is especially elegant for vanishing matter masses, then the bare charge of gauge theory 16q_0 = 16e^{iπτ_0} plays the role of a branch point on the spectral torus. The exact prepotential at this point is F a^2\log q with q\neq…
We show that exactly marginal operators of Supersymmetric Conformal Field Theories (SCFTs) with four supercharges cannot obtain a vacuum expectation value at a generic point on the conformal manifold. Exactly marginal operators are therefore nilpotent in the chiral ring. This allows us to associate an integer to the conformal manifold, which we call the nilpotency index of the conformal manifold. We discuss several examples in diverse dimensions where we demonstrate these facts and compute the nilpotency index.
We study perturbative amplitudes in a large class of theories obtained by marginal deformations of the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills. We find that planar amplitudes in the deformed theories are closely related to planar amplitudes in the original N=4 SYM. For some classes of deformations the amplitudes essentially coincide with the N=4 amplitudes to all orders in planar perturbation theory. For more general classes of marginal deformations, the equivalence holds at up to four loops, and at five loops it is likely to break down. This implies that the iterative structure of planar MHV amplitudes…
In models of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking and mediation, strongly coupled SUSY-breaking sectors can play a significant role in determining the low-energy spectrum of the model. For example, strong dynamics may provide a natural solution to both the SUSY flavor problem and the mu / B mu problem. Recently, it has been suggested that a large class of these models lead to identical boundary conditions at the SUSY breaking scale. These boundary conditions would severely constrain the models' viability. We demonstrate that the boundary conditions are instead sensitive to the details of the hidden s…
Non-relativistic conformal (''Schrödinger'') symmetry is derived in a Kaluza-Klein type framework. Lightlike reduction of the massless Dirac equation from 5D Minkowski space yields Lévy-Leblond's non-relativistic equation for a spin 1/2 particle. Combining with the osp(1,1) SUSY found before provides us with a super-Schrödinger symmetry.
We study the contact terms that appear in the correlation functions of exactly marginal operators using the AdS/CFT correspondence. It is known that CFT with an exactly marginal deformation requires the existence of the contact terms with their coefficients having a geometrical interpretation in the context of conformal manifolds. We show that the AdS/CFT correspondence captures properly the mathematical structure of the correlation functions that is expected from the CFT analysis. For this purpose, we employ holographic RG to formulate a most general setup in the bulk for describing an exactl…
We study supersymmetric AdS$_7$ vacua of massive type IIA string theory, which were argued to describe the near-horizon limit of NS5/D6/D8-brane intersections and to be holographically dual to 6D $(1,0)$ theories. We show, for the case without D8-brane charges, that such vacua do not admit any supersymmetry-breaking deformations. Our result implies that the dual $(1,0)$ theories do not have a conformal manifold, thus extending previously known results for supersymmetric deformations. It is also in line with the recent conjecture that non-supersymmetric AdS vacua are in the swampland.
We study the space of supersymmetric AdS$_5$ solutions of type IIB supergravity corresponding to the conformal manifold of the dual $\mathcal{N}=1$ conformal field theory. We show that the background geometry naturally encodes a generalised holomorphic structure, dual to the superpotential of the field theory, with the existence of the full solution following from a continuity argument. In particular, this provides a solution to the long-standing problem of finding the gravity dual of the generic $\mathcal{N}=1$ deformations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ conformal field theory. Using this formalism, we d…
It is observed that the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) for the vector mesons in the ordinary QCD with smaller N_f plays the role of the "Higgsed magnetic gauge symmetry" for the Seiberg duality in the SUSY QCD. For large N_f where the conformal phase transition with chiral restoration and deconfinement is expected to take place, we find that the HLS model also exhibits the chiral restoration by the loop corrections (including the quadratic divergence) in a manner similar to that in the CP^{N-1} model, provided that the bare HLS Lagrangian respects the Georgi's vector limit at a certain N_f (\appr…
In a previous work (arXiv:0902.3750 [hep-th]) we studied the world-sheet conformal invariance for superstrings in type IIB R-R plane-wave in semi-light-cone gauge. Here we give further justification to the results found in that work through alternative arguments using dynamical supersymmetries. We show that by using the susy algebra the same quantum definition of the energy-momentum (EM) tensor can be derived. Furthermore, using certain Jacobi identities we indirectly compute the Virasoro anomaly terms by calculating second order susy variation of the EM tensor. Certain integrated form of all …

In this note we will study solution of open bosonic string field theory based on action of operators from chiral algebra of boundary conformal field theory on identity element of string field theory star algebra. We will demonstrate that the string field theory action for fluctuation fields around this classical solution can be mapped to the string field theory action defined through the new boundary conformal field theory that arises from the original one through the marginal deformation inserted on the world-sheet boundary.
Marginal boundary deformations in a two dimensional conformal field theory correspond to a family of classical solutions of the equations of motion of open string field theory. In this paper we develop a systematic method for relating the parameter labelling the marginal boundary deformation in the conformal field theory to the parameter labelling the classical solution in open string field theory. This is done by first constructing the energy-momentum tensor associated with the classical solution in open string field theory using Noether method, and then comparing this to the answer obtained …
The conformal index counts the number of exactly marginal deformations. In 4d the index is given by the number of chiral primary operators of dimension 3 moded out by the complexified global group, where the quotient is defined as usual by imposing a D-term. Here we show its consistency with the Leigh-Strassler method for weakly coupled theories, and we test it against known examples. In several examples this method discovers extra exactly marginal deformations beyond those of Leigh-Strassler. [This is an unpublished paper dated 3.3.03.]
We study some natural connections on spaces of conformal field theories using an analytical regularization method. The connections are based on marginal conformal field theory deformations. We show that the analytical regularization preserves conformal invariance and leads to integrability of the marginal deformations. The connections are shown to be flat and to generate well-defined finite parallel transport. These finite parallel transports yield formulations of the deformed theories in the state space of an undeformed theory. The restrictions of the connections to the tangent space are curv…
