We present spectroscopic observations of six high redshift ($z_{\rm em}$ $>$ 2) quasars, which have been selected for their Lyman $α$ (Ly$α$) emission region being only partially covered by a strong proximate ($z_{\rm abs}$ $\sim$ $z_{\rm em}$) coronagraphic damped Ly$α$ system (DLA). We detected spatially extended Ly$α$ emission envelopes surrounding these six quasars, with projected spatial extent in the range 26 $\le$ $d_{\rm Lyα}$ $\le$ 51 kpc. No correlation is found between the quasar ionizing luminosity and the Ly$α$ luminosity of their extended envelopes. This could be related to the limited covering factor of the extended gas and/or due to the AGN being obscured in other directions than towards the observer. Indeed, we find a strong correlation between the luminosity of the envelope and its spatial extent, which suggests that the envelopes are probably ionized by the AGN. The metallicity of the coronagraphic DLAs is low and varies in the range $-$1.75 $<$ [Si/H] $<$ $-$0.63. Highly ionized gas is observed to be associated with most of these DLAs, probably indicating ionization by the central AGN. One of these DLAs has the highest AlIII/SiII ratio ever reported for any intervening and/or proximate DLA. Most of these DLAs are redshifted with respect to the quasar, implying that they might represent infalling gas probably accreted onto the quasar host galaxies through filaments.
Damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs) are a well-studied class of absorption line systems, and yet the properties of their host galaxies remain largely unknown. To investigate the origin of these systems, we have conducted an imaging survey of 32 quasar fields with intervening DLAs between z~1.9-3.8, leveraging a technique that allows us to image galaxies at any small angular separation from the background quasars. In this paper, we present the properties of the targeted DLA sample, new imaging observations of the quasar fields, and the analysis of new and archival spectra of the background quasars…
We present the results of our automatic search for proximate damped Ly$α$ absorption (PDLA) systems in the quasar spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. We constrain our search to those PDLAs lying within 1500 km s$^{-1}$ from the quasar to make sure that the broad DLA absorption trough masks most of the strong Ly$α$ emission from the broad line region (BLR) of the quasar. When the Ly$α$ emission from the BLR is blocked by these so-called eclipsing DLAs, narrow Ly$α$ emission from the host galaxy could be revealed as a narrow emission line (NEL) in the DLA trough. We define…
We study the cross correlation of damped Ly$α$ systems (DLAs) and their background quasars, using the most updated DLA catalog and the Planck 2018 CMB lensing convergence field. Our measurement suggests that the DLA bias $b_{\rm DLA}$ is smaller than $3.1$, corresponding to $\log(M/M_\odot h^{-1})\leq 12.3$ at a confidence of $90\%$. These constraints are broadly consistent with Alonso et al. (2018) and previous measurements by cross-correlation between DLAs and the Ly$α$ forest (e.g. Font-Ribera et al. 2012; Perez-Rafols et al. 2018). Further, our results demonstrate the potential of obtainin…
(Abridged for arXiv) We report the discovery of an unusual, extremely dust-rich and metal-strong damped \lya absorption system (DLA) at a redshift $z_{a}=2.4596$ toward the quasar SDSS J115705.52+615521.7 (hereafter J1157+6155) with an emission-line redshift $z_{e}=2.5125$. Its neutral hydrogen column density $N_{\hi} = 10^{21.8\pm0.2}$ cm$^{-2}$ is among the highest values measured in quasar DLAs. The measured metal column density is $N_{ZnII}\approx 10^{13.8}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is about 1.5 times larger than the largest value in any previously observed quasar DLAs. The best-fit curve is a MW-…
Studies have shown that UV/optical light curves of quasars can be described with the prevalent damped random walk (DRW, also known as Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process) model. A white noise power spectral density (PSD) is expected at low frequency in this model, however, direct observational constraint to the low frequency PSD slope is hard due to limited lengths of the light curves available. Meanwhile, quasars show too large scatter in their DRW parameters to be attributed to the uncertainties in the measurements and the dependence of variation to known physical factors. In this work we present sim…
A damped random walk is a stochastic process, defined by an exponential covariance matrix that behaves as a random walk for short time scales and asymptotically achieves a finite variability amplitude at long time scales. Over the last few years, it has been demonstrated, mostly but not exclusively using SDSS data, that a damped random walk model provides a satisfactory statistical description of observed quasar variability in the optical wavelength range, for rest-frame timescales from 5 days to 2000 days. The best-fit characteristic timescale and asymptotic variability amplitude scale with t…
In this paper, we present an intercomparison study of two quasars, SDSS J145618.32+340037.2 and SDSS J215331.50-025514.1, which have proximate damped Lya systems (PDLAs) with residual flux upon the Lya absorption trough. Though they both have residual flux as luminous as $10^{43}erg/s$, their PDLAs are quite different in, e.g., HI column density, metal line absorption strength, high-ionization absorption lines as well as residual flux strength. For J1456, the HI column density is $20.6\pm0.2$, with za=2.3138, nearly identical to the quasar redshift (z=2.3142) determined from the [OIII] emissio…
We characterize the Ly$α$ halo and absorption systems toward PSO J083+11, a unique $z=6.3401$ weak-line quasar, using Gemini/GNIRS, Magellan/FIRE, and VLT/MUSE data. Strong absorptions by hydrogen and several metal lines (e.g., CII, MgII, and OI) are discovered in the spectrum, which indicates the presence of: (i) a proximate sub-damped Ly$α$ (sub-DLA) system at $z=6.314$ and (ii) a MgII absorber at $z=2.2305$. To describe the observed damping wing signal, we model the Ly$α$ absorption with a combination of a sub-DLA with the neutral hydrogen column density of $\log N_\mathrm{HI} = 20.03 \pm 0…
We report the discovery of the first 'ghostly' damped Ly$α$ absorption system (DLA), which is identified by the presence of absorption from strong low-ion species at $z_{\rm abs}=1.70465$ along the line of sight to the quasar SDSSJ113341.29$-$005740.0 with $z_{\rm em}=1.70441$. No Ly$α$ absorption trough is seen associated with these absorptions because the DLA trough is filled with the leaked emission from the broad emission line region of the quasar. By modeling the quasar spectrum and analyzing the metal lines, we derive log$N$(HI)(cm$^{-2}$)$\sim$21.0 $\pm$ 0.3. The DLA cloud is small ($\l…
To fully exploit the potential of quasars as probes of cosmic chemical evolution and the internal gas dynamics of galaxies it is important to understand the selection effects behind the quasar samples and in particular if the selection criteria exclude foreground galaxies with certain properties (most importantly a high dust content). Here we present spectroscopic follow-up from the 10.4-m GTC telescope of a dust-reddened quasar, eHAQ0111+0641, from the extended High A_V Quasar (HAQ) survey. We find that the z=3.21 quasar has a foreground Damped Lyman-alpha Absorber (DLA) at z=2.027 along the …
We searched quasar spectra from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) for the rare occurrences where a strong damped Lyman-alpha absorber (DLA) blocks the Broad Line Region emission from the quasar and acts as a natural coronagraph to reveal narrow Lyα emission from the host galaxy. We define a statistical sample of 31 DLAs in Data Release 9 (DR9) with log N(HI) > 21.3 cm^-2 located at less than 1500 km s^-1 from the quasar redshift. In 25% (8) of these DLAs, a strong narrow Lyα emission line is observed with flux ~25 x 10^-17 erg s^-1 cm^-2 on average. For DLAs without t…
We study the H2 molecular content in high redshift damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) as a function of the HI column density. We find a significant increase of the H2 molecular content around log N(HI) (cm^-2)~21.5-22, a regime unprobed until now in intervening DLAs, beyond which the majority of systems have log N(H2) > 17. This is in contrast with lines of sight towards nearby stars, where such H2 column densities are always detected as soon as log N(HI)>20.7. This can qualitatively be explained by the lower average metallicity and possibly higher surrounding UV radiation in DLAs. However, unl…
SDSS J095253.83+011422.0 (SDSS J0952+0114) was reported by Hall et al. (2004) as an exotic quasar at $z_{\rm em}=3.020$. In contrast to prominent broad metal--line emissions with FWHM~9000 km/s, only a narrow Ly αemission line is present with FWHM~1000 km/s. The absence of broad Ly alpha emission line has been a mystery for more than a decade. In this paper, we demonstrate that this is due to dark Proximate Damped Ly alpha Absorption (PDLA) at $z_{\rm abs}=3.010$ by identifying associated Lyman absorption line series from the damped Ly beta up to Ly9, as well as the Lyman limit absorption edge…
We use spectroscopy of close pairs of quasars to study diffuse gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding a sample of 40 Damped Lya systems (DLAs). The primary sightline in each quasar pair probes an intervening DLA in the redshift range 1.6 < z_DLA < 3.6, such that the second quasar sightline then probes Lya, CII, SiII, and CIV absorption in the CGM transverse to the DLA to projected distances $R_{\perp} < 300$ kpc. Analysis of the Lya profiles in these CGM sightlines constrains the covering fraction (f_C) of optically thick HI (having column density N_HI > 10^17.2 cm^-2) to be greate…
We have searched the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 for ghostly Damped Ly$α$ (DLA) systems. These systems, located at the redshift of the quasars, show strong absorption from low-ionization atomic species but reveal no HI Ly$α$ absorption. Our search has, for the first time, resulted in a sample of 30 homogeneously selected ghostly DLAs with $z_{\rm QSO}$$>$2.0. Thirteen of the ghostly DLAs exhibit absorption from other HI Lyman series lines. The lack of Ly$α$ absorption in these absorbers is consistent with them being dense and compact with projected sizes smaller than the broad lin…
We present a detailed analysis of a red quasar at z=2.32 with an intervening damped Lyman-alpha absorber (DLA) at z=2.13. Using high quality data from the X-shooter spectrograph at ESO Very Large Telescope we find that the absorber has a metallicity consistent with Solar. We observe strong C I and H$_2$ absorption indicating a cold, dense absorbing medium. Partial coverage effects are observed in the C I lines, from which we infer a covering fraction of $27 \pm 6$ % and a physical diameter of the cloud of 0.1 pc. From the covering fraction and size, we estimate the size of the background quasa…
High-redshift binary quasars provide key insights into mergers and quasar activity, and are useful tools for probing the spatial kinematics and chemistry of galaxies along the line-of-sight. However, only three sub-10-kpc binaries have been confirmed above $z=1$. Gravitational lensing would provide a way to easily resolve such binaries, study them in higher resolution, and provide more sightlines, though the required alignment with a massive foreground galaxy is rare. Through image deconvolution of StanCam Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) monitoring data, we reveal two further point sources in t…
We have designed, developed, and applied a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture using multi-task learning to search for and characterize strong HI Lya absorption in quasar spectra. Without any explicit modeling of the quasar continuum nor application of the predicted line-profile for Lya from quantum mechanics, our algorithm predicts the presence of strong HI absorption and estimates the corresponding redshift zabs and HI column density NHI, with emphasis on damped Lya systems (DLAs, absorbers with log NHI > 20.3). We tuned the CNN model using a custom training set of DLAs injected …
We report the detection of the host galaxy of a damped Ly$α$ system (DLA) with log N(HI) $ [\rm cm^{-2}]$ = $21.0 \pm 0.10$ at $z \approx 3.0091$ towards the background quasar SDSS J011852+040644 using the Palomar Cosmic Web Imager (PCWI) at the Hale (P200) telescope. We detect Ly$α$ emission in the dark core of the DLA trough at a 3.3$σ$ confidence level, with Ly$α$ luminosity of $L_{\rm Lyα}$ $\rm = (3.8 \pm 0.8) \times 10^{42}\ erg\ s^{-1}$, corresponding to a star formation rate of $\gtrsim 2\ \rm M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}$ (considering a lower limit on Ly$α$ escape fraction $f_{esc}^{Lyα} \sim 2…
We use the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System 1 Survey (Pan-STARRS1, PS1) data to extend the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 quasar light curves. Combining PS1 and SDSS light curves provides a 15 yr baseline for 9248 quasars - 5 yr longer than prior studies that used only SDSS. We fit the light curves with the damped random walk (DRW) model model - a statistical description of their variability. We correlate the resulting DRW model parameters: asymptotic variability amplitude SF$_{\infty}$, and characteristic timescale $τ$, with quasar physical properties - black ho…
We present results from a search for strong H2 absorption systems proximate to quasars (zabs~zem) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 14. The search is based on the Lyman-Werner band signature of damped H2 absorption lines without any prior on the associated metal or neutral hydrogen content. This has resulted in the detection of 81 systems with log N(H2)~19-20 located within a few thousand km/s from the quasar. Compared to a control sample of intervening systems, this implies an excess of proximate H2 systems by about a factor of 4 to 5. The incidence of H2 systems increases s…
The cosmic chemical enrichment as measured from damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs) will be underestimated if dusty and metal-rich absorbers have evaded identification. Here we report the discovery and present the spectroscopic observations of a quasar, KV-RQ\,1500-0031, at $z=2.520$ reddened by a likely dusty DLA at $z=2.428$ and a strong MgII absorber at $z=1.603$. This quasar was identified as part of the KiDS-VIKING Red Quasar (KV-RQ) survey, specifically aimed at targeting dusty absorbers which may cause the background quasars to escape the optical selection of e.g. the SDSS quasar survey. For …
(Abridged) We performed a spectroscopic galaxy survey, complete to m<20.3 (L_B>0.15L_B* at z=0.3), within 100x100" of the quasar Q1127-145 (z=1.18). The VLT/UVES quasar spectrum contains three z<0.33 MgII absorption systems. We obtained eight new galaxy redshifts, adding to the four previously known, and galaxy star formation rates and metallicities were computed where possible. A strong MgII system [W_r(2796)=1.8A], which is a known DLA, had three previously identified galaxies; we found two additional galaxies associated with this system. These five galaxies form a group with diverse propert…
Gas flows in and out of galaxies are one of the key unknowns in todays' galaxy evolution studies. Because gas flows carry mass, energy and metals, they are believed to be closely connected to the star formation history of galaxies. Most of these processes take place in the circum-galactic medium (CGM) which remains challenging to observe in emission. A powerful tool to study the CGM gas is offered by combining observations of the gas traced by absorption lines in quasar spectra with detection of the stellar component of the same absorbing-galaxy. To this end, we have targeted the zabs=1.825 su…
The Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) can be probed through the analysis of absorbing systems in the line-of-sight to bright background quasars. We present measurements of the metallicity of a new sample of 15 sub-damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers (sub-DLAs, defined as absorbers with 19.0 < log N(H I) < 20.3) with redshift 0.584 < $\rm z_{abs}$ < 3.104 from the ESO Ultra-Violet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) Advanced Data Products Quasar Sample (EUADP). We combine these results with other measurements from the literature to produce a compilation of metallicity measurements for 92 sub-DLAs as well as a sample…
The advantages of angular differential imaging (ADI) has been previously untested in imaging the host galaxies of damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems. In this pilot study, we present the first application of ADI to directly imaging the host galaxy of the DLA seen towards the quasar J1431+3952. K-band imaging of the field surrounding J1431+3952 was obtained on the Gemini North telescope with the adaptive optics system and a laser guide star. We computed a sensitivity curve that demonstrates the sensitivity of our observations as a function of K-band magnitude, impact parameter and DLA angular size…
Strong quasar-galaxy lensing provides a powerful tool to probe the inter-stellar medium (ISM) of the lens galaxy using radiation from the background quasar. Using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope, we study the cold ISM properties of the lens galaxy in B1152+199 at a redshift of z=0.4377. Since existing optical extinction and X-ray absorption measurements of the lens have revealed a large amount of cold ISM, we expected to detect a damped Lya absorption (DLA) system in the near ultraviolet spectrum; however, our upper limit on the HI column density is se…
The XQ-100 survey has provided high signal-noise spectra of 100 redshift 3-4.5 quasars with the X-Shooter spectrograph. The metal abundances for 13 elements in the 41 damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) identified in the XQ-100 sample are presented, and an investigation into abundances of a variety of DLA classes is conducted. The XQ-100 DLA sample contains five DLAs within 5000 km/s of their host quasar (proximate DLAs; PDLAs) as well as three sightlines which contain two DLAs within 10,000 km/s of each other along the same line-of-sight (multiple DLAs; MDLAs). Combined with previous observatio…
We present the characteristics of the Damped Lyman-$α$ (DLA) systems found in the data release DR16 of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). DLAs were identified using the convolutional neural network (CNN) of~\cite{Parks2018}. A total of 117,458 absorber candidates were found with $2 \leq \zdla \leq 5.5$ and $19.7 \leq \lognhi \leq 22$, including 57,136 DLA candidates with $\lognhi \geq 20.3$. Mock quasar spectra were used to estimate DLA detection efficiency and the purity of the resulting catalog. Restricting the quasar sample t…
Gas surrounding high redshift galaxies has been studied through observations of absorption line systems toward background quasars for decades. However, it has proven difficult to identify and characterize the galaxies associated with these absorbers due to the intrinsic faintness of the galaxies compared to the quasars at optical wavelengths. Utilizing the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array, we report on detections of [CII] 158 micron line and dust continuum emission from two galaxies associated with two such absorbers at a redshift of z~4. Our results indicate that the hosts of thes…
We identify a strong Ly-alpha damping wing profile in the spectrum of the quasar P183+05 at z=6.4386. Given the detection of several narrow metal absorption lines at z=6.40392, the most likely explanation for the absorption profile is that it is due to a damped Ly-alpha system. However, in order to match the data a contribution of an intergalactic medium 5-38% neutral or additional weaker absorbers near the quasar is also required. The absorption system presented here is the most distant damped Ly-alpha system currently known. We estimate an HI column density ($10^{20.68\pm0.25}\,$cm$^{-2}$), …
Damped Lyman-α Absorbers (DLAs) as a class of QSO absorption-line systems are currently our most important source of detailed information on the cosmic chemical evolution of galaxies. However, the degree to which this information is biased by dust remains to be understood. One strategy is to specifically search for QSOs reddened by metal-rich and dusty foreground absorbers. In this Letter we present the discovery of a z=2.60 QSO strongly reddened by dust in an intervening extremely-strong DLA at z=2.226. This QSO was identified through a novel selection combining the astrometric measurements f…
The formation and evolution of galaxies require large reservoirs of cold, neutral gas. The damped Lya systems (DLAs), seen in absorption towards distant quasars and gamma-ray bursts, are predicted to be the dominant reservoirs for this gas. Detailed properties of DLAs have been studied extensively for decades with great success. However, their size, fundamental in understanding their nature, has remained elusive, as quasar and gamma-ray-burst sightlines only probe comparatively tiny areas of the foreground DLAs. Here, we introduce a new approach to measure the full extent of DLAs in the sightl…
The use of background quasars provides a powerful tool to probe the cool gas in the circum-galactic medium of foreground galaxies. Here, we present new observations with SINFONI and X-Shooter of absorbing-galaxy candidates at z=0.7-1. We report the detection with both instruments of the H-alpha emission line of one sub-DLA at z_abs=0.94187 with log N(HI)=19.38^+0.10_-0.15 towards SDSS J002133.27+004300.9. We estimate the star formation rate: SFR=3.6+/-2.2 solar masses per year in that system. A detailed kinematic study indicates a dynamical mass M_dyn=10^9.9+/-0.4 solar masses and a halo mass …
We report on the results of a search for CO(3-2) emission from the galaxy counterpart of a high-metallicity Damped Ly-alpha Absorber (DLA) at z=2.5832 towards the quasar Q0918+1636. We do not detect CO emission from the previously identified DLA galaxy counterpart. The limit we infer on M_gas / M_star is in the low end of the range found for DLA galaxies, but is still consistent with what is found for other star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts. Instead we detect CO(3-2) emission from another intensely star-forming galaxy at an impact parameter of 117 kpc from the line-of-sight to the qua…
We report on a sensitive search for redshifted H$α$ line-emission from three high-metallicity damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs) at $z \approx 2.4$ with the Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) on the Gemini-North telescope, assisted by the ALTtitude conjugate Adaptive optics for the InfraRed (ALTAIR) system with a laser guide star. Within the NIFS field-of-view, $\approx 3.22" \times 2.92"$ corresponding to $\approx 25$ kpc $ \times 23$ kpc at $z=2.4$, we detect no statistically significant line-emission at the expected redshifted H$α$ wavelengths. The measured root-mean-square noise f…
The dust-content of damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) is an important observable for understanding their origin and the neutral gas reservoirs of galaxies. While the average colour-excess of DLAs, E(B-V), is known to be <15 milli-magnitudes (mmag), both detections and non-detections with ~2 mmag precision have been reported. Here we find 3.2-sigma statistical evidence for DLA dust-reddening of 774 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars by comparing their fitted spectral slopes to those of ~7000 control quasars. The corresponding E(B-V) is 3.0 +/- 1.0 mmag, assuming a Small Magellanic Cloud (S…
We have employed deep neural network, or deep learning to predict the flux and the shape of the broad Ly$α$ emission lines in the spectra of quasars. We use 17870 high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR > 15) quasar spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 14 (DR14) to train the model and evaluate its performance. The SiIV, CIV, and CIII] broad emission lines are used as the input to the neural network, and the model returns the predicted Ly$α$ emission line as the output. We found that our neural network model predicts quasars continua around the Ly$α$ spectral region with $\sim$…
We present Keck/OSIRIS infrared IFU observations of the $z = $ 3.153 sub-DLA DLA2233+131, previously detected in absorption to a background quasar and studied with single slit spectroscopy and PMAS integral field spectroscopy (IFU). We used the Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGSAO) and OSIRIS IFU to reduce the point-spread function of the background quasar to FWHM$\sim$0.15 arcseconds and marginally resolve extended, foreground DLA emission. We detect [OIII]$λ$5007 emission with a flux F$^{[OIII]\lambda5007}$ = $(2.4\pm0.5)\times10^{-17}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, as well as unresolved [OIII]…
We investigate how damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers (DLAs) at z ~ 2-3, detected in large optical spectroscopic surveys of quasars, trace the population of star-forming galaxies. Building on previous results, we construct a model based on observed and physically motivated scaling relations in order to reproduce the bivariate distributions of metallicity, Z, and HI column density, N(HI). Furthermore, the observed impact parameters for galaxies associated to DLAs are in agreement with the model predictions. The model strongly favours a metallicity gradient, which scales with the luminosity of the host …
We develop an automated technique to measure quasar redshifts in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our technique is an extension of an earlier Gaussian process method for detecting damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra with known redshifts. We apply this technique to a subsample of SDSS DR12 with BAL quasars removed and redshift larger than 2.15. We show that we are broadly competitive to existing quasar redshift estimators, disagreeing with the PCA redshift by more than 0.5 in only 0.38% of spectra. Our method produces a…
We present a spectroscopic investigation with VLT/X-shooter of seven candidate extremely strong damped Lyman-$α$ absorption systems (ESDLAs, $N(\text{HI})\ge 5\times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) observed along quasar sightlines. We confirm the extremely high column densities, albeit slightly (0.1~dex) lower than the original ESDLA definition for four systems. We measured low-ionisation metal abundances and dust extinction for all systems. For two systems we also found strong associated H$_2$ absorption $\log N(\text{H$_2$)[cm$^{-2}$]}=18.16\pm0.03$ and $19.28\pm0.06$ at $z=3.26$ and $2.25$ towards J220…
We present the results of a new spectroscopic survey for dusty intervening absorption systems, particularly damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs), towards reddened quasars. The candidate quasars are selected from mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer combined with optical and near-infrared photometry. Out of 1073 candidates, we secure low-resolution spectra for 108 using the Nordic Optical Telescope on La Palma, Spain. Based on the spectra, we are able to classify 100 of the 108 targets as quasars. A large fraction (50 %) is observed to have broad absorption lines (BALs)…
In merger-driven models of massive galaxy evolution, the luminous quasar phase is expected to be accompanied by vigorous star formation in quasar host galaxies. In this paper, we use high column density Damped Lyman Alpha (DLA) systems along quasar sight lines as natural coronagraphs to directly study the far-UV (FUV) radiation from the host galaxies of luminous background quasars. We have stacked the spectra of $\sim$2,000 DLA systems (N_HI>10^{20.6} cm^{-2}) with a median absorption redshift < z > = 2.6 selected from quasars observed in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. W…
