We present a spectroscopic investigation with VLT/X-shooter of seven candidate extremely strong damped Lyman-$α$ absorption systems (ESDLAs, $N(\text{HI})\ge 5\times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) observed along quasar sightlines. We confirm the extremely high column densities, albeit slightly (0.1~dex) lower than the original ESDLA definition for four systems. We measured low-ionisation metal abundances and dust extinction for all systems. For two systems we also found strong associated H$_2$ absorption $\log N(\text{H$_2$)[cm$^{-2}$]}=18.16\pm0.03$ and $19.28\pm0.06$ at $z=3.26$ and $2.25$ towards J2205+1021 and J2359+1354, respectively), while for the remaining five we measured conservative upper limits on the H$_2$ column densities of typically $\log N(\text{H$_2$)[cm$^{-2}$]}<17.3$. The increased H$_2$ detection rate ($10-55$% at 68% confidence level) at high HI column density compared to the overall damped Lyman-$α$ population ($\sim 5-10$%) confirms previous works. We find that these seven ESDLAs have similar observed properties as those previously studied towards quasars and gamma-ray burst afterglows, suggesting they probe inner regions of galaxies. We use the abundance of ionised carbon in excited fine-structure level to calculate the cooling rates through the CII $λ$158$μ$m emission, and compare them with the cooling rates from damped Lyman-$α$ systems in the literature. We find that the cooling rates distribution of ESDLAs also presents the same bimodality as previously observed for the general (mostly lower HI column density) damped Lyman-$α$ population.
We discuss observations of CII*/CII ratios and cooling rates due to [CII]$\,$158$μ$m emission in high-redshift intervening damped Lyman-$α$ systems towards quasars. We show that the observed bimodality in the CII cooling rates actually reflects a bimodality in the CII*/CII-metallicity plane that can be naturally explained by phase segregation of the neutral medium, without invoking differences in star-formation scenarios. Assuming realistic distributions of the physical parameters to calculate the phase diagrams, we also reproduce qualitatively the metallicity dependence of this bimodality. We…
We present precise abundance determinations of two near-pristine damped Ly$α$ systems (DLAs) to assess the nature of the [O/Fe] ratio at [Fe/H] < -3 (i.e. <1/1000 of the solar metallicity). Prior observations indicate that the [O/Fe] ratio is consistent with a constant value, [O/Fe] ~ +0.4, when -3 < [Fe/H] < -2, but this ratio may increase when [Fe/H] < -3. In this paper, we test this picture by reporting new, high-precision [O/Fe] abundances in two of the most metal-poor DLAs currently known. We derive values of [O/Fe] = +0.50 +/- 0.10 and [O/Fe] = +0.62 +/- 0.05 for these two z ~ 3 near-pri…
We present the results from VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations of 11 extremely strong intervening damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (ESDLAs) initially selected as high N(Hi) (i.e.>=5x10^21 cm-2) candidates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We confirm the high Hi column densities which we measure to be in the range log N(Hi) = 21.6-22.4. Molecular hydrogen is detected with high column densities (N(H_2)>=10^18 cm-2) in five out of eleven systems, three of which are reported here for the first time. We compare the chemical properties of this sample of ESDLAs, supplemented with literature…
We present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of extremely strong damped Lyman-α absorbers (ESDLAs, log N(Hi)>=21.7) observed with VLT-XShooter. ESDLAs probe gas from within the star-forming disk of the associated galaxies and thus ESDLAs provide a unique opportunity to study the interstellar medium of galaxies at high-redshift. We report column densities (N), equivalent widths (w), and the kinematic spread (Δ v90) of species from neutral, singly ionised, and higher ionisation species. We find that, using the dust correction prescription, the measured metallicities are consistent for sing…
We use numerical N-body hydrodynamical simulations with varying PopIII stellar models to investigate the possibility of detecting first star signatures with observations of high-redshift damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs). The simulations include atomic and molecular cooling, star formation, energy feedback and metal spreading due to the evolution of stars with a range of masses and metallicities. Different initial mass functions (IMFs) and corresponding metal-dependent yields and lifetimes are adopted to model primordial stellar populations. The DLAs in the simulations are selected according to ei…
We present results from a survey designed to probe the star formation properties of 32 damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) at z~2.7. By using the "double-DLA" technique that eliminates the glare of the bright background quasars, we directly measure the rest-frame FUV flux from DLAs and their neighbouring galaxies. At the position of the absorbing gas, we place stringent constraints on the unobscured star formation rates (SFRs) of DLAs to 2-sigma limits of <0.09-0.27 M/yr, corresponding to SFR surface densities <10^(-2.6)-10^(-1.5) M/yr/kpc^2. The implications of these limits for the star formation …
We present abundance measurements of the elements Zn, S, O, C, Si and Fe for four sub-DLAs at redshifts ranging from z=2.173 to z=2.635 using observations from the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan telescope to constrain the chemical enrichment and star formation of gas-rich galaxies. Using weakly depleted elements O, S, and or Zn, we find the metallicities after the photoionization corrections to be [S/H]=-0.50\pm0.11, [O/H]>-0.84, [O/H]=-1.27\pm0.12, and [Zn/H]=+0.40\pm0.12 for the absorbers at z=2.173, 2.236, 2.539, and 2.635, respectively. Moreover, we are able to put constraints on the el…
Here we built up a sample of 22 GRBs at redshifts $z > 2$ observed with X-shooter to determine the abundances of hydrogen, metals, dust, and molecular species. This allows us to study the metallicity and dust depletion effects in the neutral ISM at high redshift and to answer the question whether (and why) there might be a lack of H$_2$ in GRB-DLAs. We fit absorption lines and measure the column densities of different metal species as well as atomic and molecular hydrogen. The derived relative abundances are used to fit dust depletion sequences and determine the dust-to-metals ratio and the ho…
We present a detailed high spectral resolution (R $\sim$ 40000) study of five high-z damped Lyman $α$ systems (DLAs) and one sub-DLA detected along four QSO sightlines. Four of these DLAs are very metal-poor with [Fe/H] $\le$ $-$2. One of them, at z$_{abs}$ = 4.20287 towards J0953$-$0504, is the most metal-poor DLA at z $>$ 4 known till date. This system shows no enhancement of C over Fe and O, and standard Population II star yields can explain its relative abundance pattern. The DLA at z$_{abs}$ = 2.34006 towards J0035$-$0918 has been claimed to be the most carbon-enhanced metal-poor DLA. How…
Extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars are the living fossils with records of chemical enrichment history at the early epoch of galaxy formation. By the recent large observation campaigns, statistical samples of EMP stars have been obtained. This motivates us to reconsider their classification and formation conditions. From the observed lower-limits of carbon and iron abundances of Acr(C) ~ 6 and [Fe/H]cr ~ -5 for C-enhanced EMP (CE-EMP) and C-normal EMP (CN-EMP) stars, we confirm that gas cooling by dust thermal emission is indispensable for the fragmentation of their parent clouds to form such low…
We present a study of ~100 high redshift (z~2-4) extremely strong damped Lyman-alpha systems (ESDLA, with N(HI)>0.5x10^22 cm^-2) detected in quasar spectra from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey SDSS-III DR11. We study the neutral hydrogen, metal, and dust content of this elusive population of absorbers and confirm our previous finding that the high column density end of the N(HI) frequency distribution has a relatively shallow slope with power-law index -3.6, similar to what is seen from 21-cm maps in nearby galaxies. The stacked absorption spectrum indicates a typical metallicity ~…
(Abridged for arXiv) We report the discovery of an unusual, extremely dust-rich and metal-strong damped \lya absorption system (DLA) at a redshift $z_{a}=2.4596$ toward the quasar SDSS J115705.52+615521.7 (hereafter J1157+6155) with an emission-line redshift $z_{e}=2.5125$. Its neutral hydrogen column density $N_{\hi} = 10^{21.8\pm0.2}$ cm$^{-2}$ is among the highest values measured in quasar DLAs. The measured metal column density is $N_{ZnII}\approx 10^{13.8}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is about 1.5 times larger than the largest value in any previously observed quasar DLAs. The best-fit curve is a MW-…
I report the detection of HI 21cm absorption in two high column density damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers (DLAs) at $z \approx 2$ using new wide-band $250-500$ MHz receivers onboard the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. The integrated HI 21cm optical depths are $0.85 \pm 0.16$ km/s (TXS1755+578) and $2.95 \pm 0.15$ km/s (TXS1850+402). For the $z=1.9698$ DLA towards TXS1755+578, the difference in HI 21cm and CI profiles and the weakness of the radio core suggest that the HI 21cm absorption arises towards radio components in the jet, and that the optical and radio sightlines are not the same. This precl…
We present the detection of the average H$_2$ absorption signal in the overall population of neutral gas absorption systems at $z\sim 3$ using composite absorption spectra built from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III damped Lyman-$α$ catalogue. We present a new technique to directly measure the H$_2$ column density distribution function $f_{\rm H_2}(N)$ from the average H$_2$ absorption signal. Assuming a power-law column density distribution, we obtain a slope $β= -1.29 \pm 0.06(\rm stat) \pm 0.10 (\rm sys)$ and an incidence rate of strong H$_2$ absorptions (with $N$(H$_2)\gtrsim 10^{18}\,$cm$…
We present a detailed analysis of a H$_2$-rich, extremely strong intervening Damped Ly-$α$ Absorption system (DLA) at $z_{\rm abs}=2.786$ towards the quasar J$\,$0843+0221, observed with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope. The total column density of molecular (resp. atomic) hydrogen is $\log N$(H$_2$)=$21.21\pm0.02$ (resp. $\log N$(H$\,$I)=$21.82\pm0.11$), making it to be the first case in quasar absorption lines studies with H$_2$ column density as high as what is seen in $^{13}$CO-selected clouds in the Milky-Way. We find that this system has one of …
Damped Lyman-α Absorbers (DLAs) as a class of QSO absorption-line systems are currently our most important source of detailed information on the cosmic chemical evolution of galaxies. However, the degree to which this information is biased by dust remains to be understood. One strategy is to specifically search for QSOs reddened by metal-rich and dusty foreground absorbers. In this Letter we present the discovery of a z=2.60 QSO strongly reddened by dust in an intervening extremely-strong DLA at z=2.226. This QSO was identified through a novel selection combining the astrometric measurements f…
Hydrogen Ly$α$ haloes (LAHs) are commonly used as a tracer of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at high redshifts. In this work, we aim to explore the existence of Ly$α$ haloes around individual UV-selected galaxies, rather than around Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs), at high redshifts. Our sample was continuum-selected with F775W<=27.5, and spectroscopic redshifts were assigned or constrained for all the sources thanks to the deepest (100- to 140-hour) existing Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) data with adaptive optics. The final sample includes 21 galaxies that are pur…
We study gravitational collapse of low-metallicity gas clouds and the formation of protostars by three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. Grain growth, non-equilibrium chemistry, molecular cooling, and chemical heating are solved in a self-consistent manner for the first time. We employ the realistic initial conditions for the abundances of metal and dust, and the dust size distribution obtained from recent Population III supernova calculations. We also introduce the state-of-the-art particle splitting method based on the Voronoi tessellation and achieve an extremely high mass resolution of…
I present a suite of three-dimensional simulations of the evolution of initially-hot material ejected by starburst-driven galaxy outflows. The simulations are conducted in a comoving frame that moves with the material, tracking atomic/ionic cooling, Compton cooling, and dust cooling and destruction. Compton cooling is most efficient of these processes, while the main role of atomic/ionic cooling is to enhance density inhomogeneities. Dust, on the other hand, has little effect on the outflow evolution, and is rapidly destroyed in all the simulations except the case with the smallest mass flux. …
The first galaxies contain stars born out of gas with little or no metals. The lack of metals is expected to inhibit efficient gas cooling and star formation but this effect has yet to be observed in galaxies with oxygen abundance relative to hydrogen below a tenth of that of the Sun. Extremely metal poor nearby galaxies may be our best local laboratories for studying in detail the conditions that prevailed in low metallicity galaxies at early epochs. Carbon Monoxide (CO) emission is unreliable as tracers of gas at low metallicities, and while dust has been used to trace gas in low-metallicity…
A near pristine atomic cooling halo close to a star forming galaxy offers a natural pathway for forming massive direct collapse black hole (DCBH) seeds which could be the progenitors of the $z>6$ redshift quasars. The close proximity of the haloes enables a sufficient Lyman-Werner flux to effectively dissociate H$_2$ in the core of the atomic cooling halo. A mild background may also be required to delay star formation in the atomic cooling halo, often attributed to distant background galaxies. In this letter we investigate the impact of metal enrichment from both the background galaxies and th…
We present a detailed analysis of three extremely strong intervening DLAs (log N(HI)>=21.7) observed towards quasars with VLT/UVES. We measure overall metallicities of [Zn/H]~-1.2, -1.3 and -0.7 at respectively zabs=2.34 towards SDSS J2140-0321 (log N(HI) = 22.4+/-0.1), zabs=3.35 towards SDSS J1456+1609 (log N(HI) = 21.7+/-0.1) and zabs=2.25 towards SDSS J0154+1935 (log N(HI) = 21.75+/-0.15). We detect H2 towards J2140-0321 (log N(H2) = 20.13+/-0.07) and J1456+1609 (log N(H2) = 17.10+/-0.09) and argue for a tentative detection towards J0154+1935. Absorption from the excited fine-structure leve…
We have carried out two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations to study the effects of disk self-gravity and radiative cooling on the formation of gaps and spirals. (1) With disk self-gravity included, we find stronger, more tightly-wound spirals and deeper gaps in more massive disks. The deeper gaps are due to the larger Angular Momentum Flux (AMF) of the waves excited in more massive disks, as expected from the linear theory. The position of the secondary gap does not change, provided that the disk is not extremely massive ($Q \gtrsim 2$). (2) With radiative cooling included, the excited spi…

We investigate the formation of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars that are observed in the Galactic halo and neighboring ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. Their low metal abundances (${\rm [Fe/H]} < -3$) indicate that their parent clouds were enriched by a single or several supernovae (SNe) from the first (Pop III) stars. In this study, we perform numerical simulations of the entire formation sequence of a EMP star through the feedback effects of photo-ionization and metal-enrichment by a Pop III SN. We for the first time employ a metal/dust properties calculated consistently with the progenitor mode…
The apparent lack of cold molecular gas in blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies is at variance with their intense star-formation episode. The CO molecule, often used a tracer of H2 through a conversion function, is selectively photodissociated in dust-poor environments and, as a result, a potentially large fraction of H2 is expected to reside in the so-called CO-dark gas, where it could be traced instead by infrared cooling lines [CI], [CII], and [OI]. Although the fraction of CO-dark gas to total molecular gas is expected to be relatively large in metal-poor galaxies, many uncertainties remain d…
Dust grains in low-metallicity star-forming regions may be responsible for the formation of the first low-mass stars. The minimal conditions to activate dust-induced fragmentation require the gas to be pre-enriched above a critical dust-to-gas mass ratio Dcr=[2.6--6.3]x10^-9 with the spread reflecting the dependence on the grain properties. The recently discovered Galactic halo star SDSS J102915+172927 has a stellar mass of 0.8 Msun and a metallicity of Z=4.5x10^-5 Zsun and represents an optimal candidate for the dust-induced low-mass star formation. Indeed, for the two most plausible Populati…
We use high-resolution three-dimensional adaptive mesh refinement simulations to investigate the interaction of high-redshift galaxy outflows with low-mass virialized clouds of primordial composition. While atomic cooling allows star formation in objects with virial temperatures above $10^4$ K, "minihaloes" below this threshold are generally unable to form stars by themselves. However, these objects are highly susceptible to triggered star formation, induced by outflows from neighboring high-redshift starburst galaxies. Here we conduct a study of these interactions, focusing on cooling through…
In a low-metallicity gas, rapid cooling by dust thermal emission is considered to induce cloud fragmentation and play a vital role in the formation of low-mass stars (<~ 1 M_sun) in metal-poor environments. We investigate how the growth of dust grains through accretion of heavy elements in the gas phase onto grain surfaces alters the thermal evolution and fragmentation properties of a collapsing gas cloud. We calculate directly grain growth and dust emission cooling in a self-consistent manner. We show that MgSiO3 grains grow sufficiently at gas densities nH = 10^{10}, 10^{12}, and 10^{14} /cc…
We present a deep Suzaku observation of H1821+643, an extremely rare example of a powerful quasar hosted by the central massive galaxy of a rich cooling-core cluster of galaxies. Informed by previous Chandra studies of the cluster, we achieve a spectral separation of emission from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and the intracluster medium (ICM). With a high degree of confidence, we identify the signatures of X-ray reflection/reprocessing by cold and slowly moving material in the AGN's immediate environment. The iron abundance of this matter is found to be significantly sub-solar (Z~0.4Zsun)…
Recent searches for the hosts of high-redshift ($z \sim 4$) damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs) have detected bright galaxies at distances of tens of kpc from the DLA. Using the FIRE-2 cosmological zoom simulations, we argue that these relatively large distances are due to a predominantly cool and neutral inner circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding high-redshift galaxies. The inner CGM is cool because of the short cooling time of hot gas in $\lesssim10^{12}$ Msun halos, which implies that accretion and feedback energy are radiated quickly, while it is neutral due to the high volume densities and c…
