Long Josephson tunnel junction are non-linear transmission lines that allow propagation of current vortices (fluxons) and electromagnetic waves and are used in various applications within superconductive electronics. Recently, the Josephson vortex has been proposed as a new superconducting qubit. We describe a simple method to create a double-well potential for an individual fluxon trapped in a long elliptic annular Josephson tunnel junction characterized by an intrinsic non-uniform width. The distance between the potential wells and the height of the inter-well potential barrier are controlled by the strength of an in-plane magnetic field. The manipulation of the vortex states can be achieved by applying a proper current ramp across the junction. The read-out of the state is accomplished by measuring the vortex depinning current in a small magnetic field. An accurate one-dimensional sine-Gordon model for this strongly non-linear system is presented, from which we calculate the position-dependent fluxon rest-mass, its Hamiltonian density and the corresponding trajectories in the phase space. We examine the dependence of the potential properties on the annulus eccentricity and its electrical parameters and address the requirements for observing quantum-mechanical effects, as discrete energy levels and tunneling, in this two-state system.
We report systematic measurements of the critical current versus magnetic field patterns of annular Josephson junctions in a wide magnetic field range. A modulation of the envelope of the pattern, which depends on the junction width, is observed. The data are compared with theory and good agreement is found.
It has been argued by Zurek and Kibble that the likelihood of producing defects in a continuous phase transition depends in a characteristic way on the quench rate. In this paper we discuss our experiment for measuring the Zurek-Kibble scaling exponent sigma for the production of fluxons in annular symmetric Josephson Tunnel Junctions. The predicted exponent is sigma = 0.25, and we find sigma = 0.27 +/- 0.05. Further, there is agreement with the ZK prediction for the overall normalisation.
The interaction of a Josephson fluxon with an external magnetic field-induced potential in a long Josephson junction is investigated experimentally. The thermal activation of the fluxon from a potential well is observed and experiments probing its predicted quantum properties are discussed. A method for engineering a magnetic double-well potential for a fluxon is proposed and the use of the coupled fluxon states for quantum computation is suggested.
The statics and dynamics of magnetic flux quanta (fluxons) in long annular Josephson tunnel junctions have been investigated. Pinning by interaction of the fluxon field outside the junction with the superconducting wiring has been observed in spatially resolving measurements using low-temperature scanning electron microscopy. We were able to influence the characteristics of this field by carefully modifying the beam-induced fluxon trapping procedure. In this way we were able to select the pinning site acting on the fluxon.
Two-fluxon state in an annular Josephson junction in the presence of external magnetic field is studied analytically, numerically and experimentally. We obtain an analytical expression for the potential of interaction between the fluxons moving at arbitrary velocities (without the use of the "nonrelativistic" approximation). Treating the fluxons as quasi-particles, we then derive equations of motion for them. Direct simulations of the full extended sine-Gordon equation are in good agreement with results produced by the analytical model, in a relevant parameter region. Experimental data qualita…
Examination of an annular system of underdamped Josephson junctions in the presence of external radiation showed that the ability of the system to lock with some external radiation was determined not only by the number but also by the type of rotating excitations (fluxons or antifluxons). Shapiro steps can be observed in the current-voltage characteristics only in the system with trapped fluxons or in the system with fluxon-antifluxon pairs. If the trapped fluxons circulate simultaneously with fluxon-antifluxon pairs, there are no Shapiro steps regardless of the amplitude or frequency of the a…
We report on the spontaneous production of fluxons in the presence of a symmetry-breaking magnetic field for annular Josephson tunnel junctions during a thermal quench. The dependence on field intensity $B$ of the probability $\bar{f_1}$ to trap a single defect during the N-S phase transition drastically depends on the sample circumferences. We show that the data can be understood in the framework of the Kibble-Zurek picture of spontaneous defect formation controlled by causal bounds.
A novel dynamical state has been observed in the dynamics of a perdurbed sine-Gordon system. This resonant state, has been experimentally observed as a singularity in the dc current voltage characteristic of an annular Josephson tunnel junction, excited in the presence of a magnetic field. With this respect, it can be assimilated to self-resonances known as Fiske steps. Differently from these, however, we demonstrate, on the basis of numerical simulations, that its detailed dynamics involves rotating fluxon pairs, a mechanism associated, so far, to self-resonances known as zero-field steps.
We investigate theoretically the interaction between integer and half-integer Josephson vortices (fluxons and semifluxons) in an annular Josephson junction. Semifluxons usually appear at the 0-$π$-boundary where there is a $π$-discontinuity of the Josephson phase. We study the simplest, but the most interesting case of one $π$-discontinuity in a loop, which can be created only artificially. We show that measuring the current-voltage characteristic after injection of an integer fluxon, one can determine the polarity of a semifluxon. Depending on the relative polarity of fluxon and semifluxon th…
It has been argued by Zurek and Kibble that the likelihood of producing defects in a continuous phase transition depends in a characteristic way on the quench rate. In this paper we discuss our experiment for measuring the Zurek-Kibble scaling exponent $σ$ for the production of fluxons in annular symmetric Josephson Tunnel Junctions. The predicted exponent is $% σ=0.25$, and we find $σ=0.27\pm 0.05$. Further, there is agreement with the ZK prediction for the overall normalisation.
The physics of Josephson tunnel junctions drastically depends on their geometrical configurations and here we show that also tiny geometrical details play a determinant role. More specifically, we develop the theory of short and long confocal annular Josephson tunnel junctions in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field of arbitrary orientations. The behavior of a circular annular Josephson tunnel junction is then seen to be simply a special case of the above result. For junctions having a normalized perimeter less than one the threshold curves are derived and computed even in the case with …
Phase transitions executed in a finite time show a domain structure with defects, that has been argued by Zurek and Kibble to depend in a characteristic way on the quench rate. In this letter we present an experiment to measure the Zurek-Kibble scaling exponent sigma. Using symmetric and long Josephson Tunnel Junctions, for which the predicted index is sigma = 0.25, we find sigma = 0.27 +/- 0.05. Further, there is agreement with the ZK prediction for the overall normalisation.
If systems change as fast as possible as they pass through a phase transition then the initial domain structure is constrained by causality. We shall show how we can trace these causal horizons by measuring the spontaneous production of flux in annular Josephson Tunnel Junctions as a function of the quench time $τ_{Q}$ into the superconducting phase. A specific test of our analysis is that the probability P$_{1}$ to trap a single fluxon at the N-S transition clearly follows an allometric dependence on $τ_{Q}$ as $P_1 = a τ_Q^{-σ}$, with a scaling exponent $σ= 0.25$, in agreement with the data.
We prove that the equation modelling an annular Josephson junction has a rotating fluxon wave for all values of the parameters. We also obtain results on uniqueness of the rotating fluxon wave in some parameter regimes, and results on multiplicity of rotating fluxon waves in other parameter regimes.
We have investigated the static properties of one-dimensional planar Josephson tunnel junctions in the most general case of elliptic annuli. We have analyzed the dependence of the critical current in the presence of an external magnetic field applied either in the junction plane or in the perpendicular direction. We report a detailed study of both short and long elliptic annular junctions having different eccentricities. For junctions having a normalized perimeter less than one the threshold curves are derived and computed even in the case with one trapped Josephson vortex. For longer junction…
Appearance and origin of resonance phenomena have been studied in the annular system of underdamped Josephson junctions. If no fluxon is trapped in the system, dynamics is governed by the motion of fluxon-antifluxon pairs, while if trapped fluxons are present, they can move solely but also simultaneously with the pairs. Locking between the rotating excitations (fluxons and antifluxons) and the Josephson frequency leads to the appearance of zero field steps in the current-voltage characteristics, which can further exhibit branching due to resonance between the rotating excitations and plasma os…
We report theoretical and experimental work on the development of a vortex qubit based on a microshort in an annular Josephson junction. The microshort creates a potential barrier for the vortex, which produces a double-well potential under the application of an in-plane magnetic field; The field strength tunes the barrier height. A one-dimensional model for this system is presented, from which we calculate the vortex depinning current and attempt frequency as well as the interwell coupling. Implementation of an effective microshort is achieved via a section of insulating barrier that is local…
We investigate the influence of Pearl vortices in the vicinity of an edge-type Josephson junction for a superconducting thin-film loop in the form of an annulus, under uniform magnetic field. Specifically, we obtain the exact analytic formulation that allows to describe the circulating current density and the gauge invariant phase increment $Δϕ$ across the junction. The main properties of $Δϕ$ and their influence on the critical current pattern $I_c(B)$ are described quantitatively in terms of the loop's width to radius ratio $W/R$ and of the vortex position within the loop ${\bf r}_v$. It is …
The dynamical behavior of a fluxon in a semi-annular long Josephson junction in the presence of an ac-drive is studied. The non-uniformity due to the non uniform distribution of bias current is investigated. The oscillating potential is found to increase the depinning current. Finite difference method is used for numerical analysis and the response of the system to the ac-bias is studied. The creation and annihilation of fluxon is also demonstrated numerically for the first, second and third Zero-Field step cases.
Experimental observation of the unidirectional motion of a topological soliton driven by a bi-harmonic ac force of zero mean is reported. The observation is made by measuring the current-voltage characteristics for a fluxon trapped in an annular Josephson junction that was placed into a microwave field. The measured dependence of the fluxon mean velocity (rectified voltage) at zero dc bias versus the phase shift between the first and second harmonic of the driving force is in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations.
In parallel with Kibble's description of the onset of phase transitions in the early universe, Zurek has provided a simple picture for the onset of phase transitions in condensed matter systems, strongly supported by agreement with experiments in He3. In this letter we show how experiments with annular Josephson tunnel Junctions can and do provide further support for this scenario.
We analyze the dynamics of a magnetic flux quantum (current vortex) trapped in a current-biased long planar elliptic annular Josephson tunnel junction. The system is modeled by a perturbed sine-Gordon equation that determines the spatial and temporal behavior of the phase difference across the tunnel barrier separating the two superconducting electrodes. In the absence of an external magnetic field the fluxon dynamics in an elliptic annulus does not differ from that of a circular annulus where the stationary fluxon speed merely is determined by the system losses. The interaction between the vo…
Experiments towards realizing a readout of superconducting qubits by using ballistic Josephson vortices are reported. We measured the microwave radiation induced by a fluxon moving in an annular Josephson junction. By coupling a flux qubit as a current dipole to the annular junction, we detect periodic variations of the fluxon's oscillation frequency versus magnetic flux through the qubit. We found that the scattering of a fluxon on a current dipole can lead to the acceleration of a fluxon regardless of a dipole polarity. We use the perturbation theory and numerical simulations of the perturbe…
Confocal Annular Josephson Tunnel Junctions (CAJTJs) which are the natural generalization of the circular annular Josephson tunnel junctions, have a rich nonlinear phenomenology due to the intrinsic non-uniformity of their planar tunnel barrier delimited by two closely spaced confocal ellipses. In the presence of a uniform magnetic field in the barrier plane, the periodically changing width of the elliptical annulus generates a asymmetric double-well for a Josephson vortex trapped in a long and narrow CAJTJ. The preparation and readout of the vortex pinned in one of the two potential minima, w…
We investigate the physics of planar annular Josephson tunnel junctions quenched through their transition temperature in the presence of an external magnetic field. Experiments carried out with long Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb annular junctions showed that the magnetic flux trapped in the high-quality doubly-connected superconducting electrodes forming the junction generates a persistent current whose associated magnetic field affects the both the static and dynamics properties of the junctions. More specifically, the field trapped in the hole of one electrode combined with a d.c. bias current induces a vis…
We investigate theoretically the thermal escape behavior of trapped magnetic fluxons in long annular Josephson junctions in dc magnetic fields, and perturbed by a probing ac current. The study is motivated by recently published experimental data that show multi-peaked escape distributions for increasing bias current in the extreme low temperature regime when the system is perturbed by an ac current. We demonstrate that the observed behavior of multi-peaked escape distributions can be reproduced and predicted in the entirely classical, thermally driven sine-Gordon model, which is widely accepte…
We report theoretical and experimental work on the development of a Josephson vortex qubit based on a confocal annular Josephson tunnel junction (CAJTJ). The key ingredient of this geometrical configuration is a periodically variable width that generates a spatial vortex potential with bistable states. This intrinsic vortex potential can be tuned by an externally applied magnetic field and tilted by a bias current. The two-state system is accurately modeled by a one-dimensional sine-Gordon like equation by means of which one can numerically calculate both the magnetic field needed to set the v…
I consider a Corbino-geometry SNS (superconducting-normal-superconducting) Josephson weak link in a thin superconducting film, in which current enters at the origin, flows outward, passes through an annular Josephson weak link, and leaves radially. In contrast to sandwich-type annular Josephson junctions, in which the gauge-invariant phase difference obeys the sine-Gordon equation, here the gauge-invariant phase difference obeys an integral equation. I present exact solutions for the gauge-invariant phase difference across the weak link when it contains an integral number N of Josephson vortic…
It is well known that long Josephson tunnel junctions (JTJs) act as active transmission lines for the slow-mode propagation of magnetic flux-quanta (in the form of solitary waves) that is at the base of many superconducting circuits. At the same time, they support the propagation of quasi-TEM dispersive waves with which the magnetic flux non-linearly interact. In this work, we study the properties of the electromagnetic resonances, under different conditions of practical interest, in annular JTJs (AJTJs), in which the wavelengths are limited to the length of the circumference divided by an int…
We investigate Josephson flux-flow in annular Josephson tunnel junctions (AJTJs) under the application of magnetic fields generating finite-voltage steps in their current-voltage characteristics. Experimental data are presented for confocal AJTJs which are the natural generalization of the well studied circular AJTJs for which flux flow effects have never been reported. Displaced linear slopes, Fiske step staircases and Eck steps were sequentially recorded at $4.2\,K$ with high-quality Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb confocal AJTJs when increasing the strength of a uniform magnetic field applied in the plane of…
We demonstrate Josephson tunneling in vacuum tunnel junctions formed between a superconducting scanning tunneling microscope tip and a Pb film, for junction resistances in the range 50-300 k$Ω$. We show that the superconducting phase dynamics is dominated by thermal fluctuations, and that the Josephson current appears as a peak centered at small finite voltages. In the presence of microwave fields (f=15.0 GHz) the peak decreases in magnitude and shifts to higher voltages with increasing rf power, in agreement with theory.
We have developed a scheme for a high resolution measurement of the switching current distribution of a current biased Josephson tunnel junction using a timing technique. The measurement setup is implemented such that the digital control and read-out electronics are optically decoupled from the analog bias electronics attached to the sample. We have successfully used this technique to measure the thermal activation and the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the phase in a small Josephson tunnel junction with a high experimental resolution. This technique may be employed to characterize current-b…
The expression for additional subgap current in the presence of electron-phonon interaction is derived. We show that the phonon assisted tunneling leads to appearance of peaks on current-voltage characteristics at the Josephson frequencies corresponding to the Raman-active phonons. The relation of the obtained results to experimental observations are discussed.
Tunnel junction between two superconductors is considered in the vicinity of the critical temperature. Superconductive fluctuations above Tc give rise to the noise of the ac Josephson current although the current itself is zero in average. As a result of fluctuations, current noise spectrum is peaked at the Josephson frequency, which may be considered as precursor of superconductivity in the normal state. Temperature dependence and shape of the Josephson current noise resonance line is calculated for various junction configurations.
Collective excitations reveal fundamental properties and potential applications of superconducting states. We theoretically study macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in a Josephson junction composed of multi-band superconductors, focusing on a phase mode induced by inter-band fluctuations: the Josephson-Leggett (JL) collective excitation mode. Using the imaginary-time path-integral method, we derive a formula for the MQT escape rate for low-temperature switching events. We clarify that the JL mode has two major effects on the MQT: (i) the zero-point fluctuations enhance the escape rate, and (i…
The physics of Josephson tunnel junctions drastically depends on their geometrical configurations. The shape of the junction determines the specific form of the magnetic-field dependence of the its Josephson current. Here we address the magnetic diffraction patterns of specially shaped planar Josephson tunnel junctions in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field of arbitrary orientations. We focus on a wide ensemble of junctions whose shape is invariant under point reflection. We analyze the implications of this type of isometry and derive the threshold curves of junctions whose shape is the…
Motivated by recent experiments, we investigate Josephson scanning tunneling spectroscopy in an s-wave superconductor. We demonstrate that the spatial oscillations in the superconducting order parameter induced by defects can be spatially imaged through local measurements of the critical Josephson current, providing unprecedented insight into the nature of superconductivity. The spatial form of the Josephson current reflects the nature of the defects, and can be used to probe defect-induced phase transitions from an $S=0$ to an $S=1/2$ ground state.
We theoretically study Josephson vortex structures in Josephson junctions which have multiple tunneling channels caused by multiple superconducting gaps. Deriving "coupled sine-Gordon equations" from the free-energy taking account of the multiple tunneling channels, we examine two typical situations, a heterotic junction composed of multigap-superconductor, insulator, and single-gap superconductor, and a grain-boundary junction formed by two identical multigap superconductors. Then, we reveal in both situations that the magnetic field distribution of the Josephson vortex for $\pm s$-wave super…
The Josephson effect can be regarded as a striking manifestation of exciton condensation. It has been suggested to tune the condensate phase of bilayer excitons by applying interlayer tunneling current. A poorly-understood phenomenon observed by Huang {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\bf 109$, 156802 (2012)] demonstrates that the critical values of the interlayer tunneling current at either edge can be controlled by passing a second interlayer tunneling current at the other edge. We successfully attribute this novel coupling to excitonic Josephson effect induced by tunneling-current generated re…
The most important practical characteristic of a Josephson junction is its critical current. The shape of the junction determines the specific form of the magnetic-field dependence of the its Josephson current. Here we address the magnetic diffraction patterns of specially shaped planar Josephson tunnel junctions. We focus on a wide ensemble of generalized ellipses, called superellipses, which retain the second order symmetry. We analyze the implications of this type of isometry and derive the explicit expressions for the threshold curves of superelliptic Josephson junctions. A detailed study …
We extend a recent construction for an integrable model describing Josephson tunneling between identical BCS systems to the case where the BCS systems have different single particle energy levels. The exact solution of the generalized model is obtained through the Bethe ansatz.
The magnetic field distribution in the barrier of small planar Josephson tunnel junctions is numerically simulated in the case when an external magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the barrier plane. The simulations allow for heuristic analytical solutions for the Josephson static phase profile from which the dependence of the maximum Josephson current on the applied field amplitude is derived. The most common geometrical configurations are considered and, when possible, the theoretical findings are compared with the experimental data.
Traditionally, since the discovery of the Josephson effect in 1962, the magnetic diffraction pattern of planar Josephson tunnel junctions has been recorded with the field applied in the plane of the junction. Here we discuss the static junction properties in a transverse magnetic field where demagnetization effects imposed by the junction geometry and configuration of the electrodes are important. Measurements of the critical current versus magnetic field in planar Nb-based high-quality junctions with different geometry, size and critical current density show that it is advantageous to use a t…
We have developed a method for the reproducible fabrication of superconducting scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tips. We use these tips to form superconductor/insulator/superconductor tunnel junctions with the STM tip as one of the electrodes. We show that such junctions exhibit fluctuation dominated Josephson effects, and describe how the Josephson product IcRn can be inferred from the junctions' tunneling characteristics in this regime. This is first demonstrated for tunneling into Pb films, and then applied in studies of single crystals of NbSe2. We find that in NbSe2, IcRn is lower than…
Within the tunneling Hamiltonian formulation for the eight-component spinors, the Josephson critical super-current has been calculated in a planar superconductor-normal graphene-superconductor junction. Coupling between superconductor regions and graphene is taken into account by a tunneling Hamiltonian which contains two types of tunneling, intra-valley and inter-valley tunneling. Within the present tunneling approach, we find that the contributions of two kinds of tunneling to the critical super-current, are completely separable. Therefore, it is possible to consider the effect of the inter-v…
We investigate superconductor/insulator/ferromagnet/superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions in the dirty limit, using the quasiclassical theory. We formulate a quantitative model describing the oscillations of critical current as a function of thickness of the ferromagnetic layer and use this model to fit recent experimental data. We also calculate quantitatively the density of states (DOS) in this type of junctions and compare DOS oscillations with those of the critical current.
The temperature and angular dependence of the c-axis Josephson current and the superfluid density in layered d-wave superconductors are studied within the framework of an extended Ambegaokar-Baratoff formalism. In particular, the effects of angle-dependent tunneling matrix elements and Andreev scattering at grain boundaries are taken into account. These lead to strong corrections of the low-temperature behavior of the plasma frequency and the Josephson current. Recent c-axis measurements on the cuprate high-temperature superconductors HgBa_2CaCu_{1+δ} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} can therefore be…
It will be shown that a pronounced interfacial pair breaking can be identified in Josephson tunnel junctions provided the first j_{1c} and the second j_{2c} harmonics of the supercurrent, as well as the depairing current in the bulk j_{dp}, are known. Namely, within the Ginzburg-Landau theory a strong interfacial pair breaking results in the relation j_{2c}j_{dp}>>j_{1c}^2, while in standard junctions, with negligibly small pair breaking, the relation of opposite character takes place.
We have investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions at millikelvin temperatures using microwave irradiation. Measurements show that the escape rate for uniformly switching stacks of N junctions is about $N^2$ times higher than that of a single junction having the same plasma frequency. We argue that this gigantic enhancement of macroscopic quantum tunneling rate in stacks is boosted by current fluctuations which occur in the series array of junctions loaded by the impedance of the environment.
We study the phenomenon of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in small Josephson junctions (JJ) with an externally applied magnetic field. The latter results in the appearance of the Fraunhofer type modulation of the current density along the barrier. The problem of MQT for a point-like JJ is reduced to the motion of the quantum particle in the washboard potential. In the case of a finite size JJ under consideration, this problem corresponds to a MQT in potential which itself, besides the phase, depends on space variables. Finally, the general expression for the crossover temperature T_0 betw…
We tested oxidized titanium layers as barriers for hybrid Josephson junctions with high $I_cR_n$-products and for the preparation of junctions for tunneling spectroscopy. For that we firstly prepared junctions with conventional superconductor electrodes lead and niobium, respectively. By tuning the barrier thickness we were able to change the junctions' behavior from a Josephson junction to tunnel-like behavior applicable for quasi-particle spectroscopy. Subsequently, we transferred the technology to junctions using Co-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition as base…
We study nonequilibrium effects in current transport through voltage biased tunnel junction with long diffusive superconducting leads at low applied voltage, $eV \ll 2Δ$, and finite temperatures. Due to a small value of the Josephson frequency, the quasiparticle spectrum adiabatically follows the time evolution of the superconducting phase difference, which results in the formation of oscillating bound states in the vicinity of the tunnel junction (Andreev band). The quasiparticles trapped by the Andreev band generate higher even harmonics of the Josephson ac current, and also, in the presence…
We elaborate a theoretical description of large Josephson junctions which is based on the Werthamer's microscopic tunneling theory. The model naturally incorporates coupling of electromagnetic radiation to the tunnel currents and, therefore, is particularly suitable for description of the self-coupling effect in Josephson junction. In our numerical calculations we treat the arising integro-differential equation, which describes temporal evolution of the superconducting phase difference coupled to the electromagnetic field, by the Odintsov-Semenov-Zorin algorithm. This allows us to avoid evalua…
We have observed photon-assisted Cooper-pair tunneling in an atomic-scale Josephson junction formed between a superconducting Nb tip and a superconducting Nb sample in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at 30 mK. High-resolution tunneling spectroscopy data show a zero-bias conduction peak and other sharp sub-gap peaks from coupling of the STM junction to resonances in the electromagnetic environment. The sub-gap peaks respond to incident microwave radiation by splitting into multiple peaks with the position and height depending on the frequency and amplitude of the microwaves. The inter-pea…
We propose here an experiment aimed to determine whether there are superconducting pairing fluctuations in the pseudogap regime of the high-$T_c$ materials. In the experimental setup, two samples above $T_c$ are brought into contact at a single point and the differential AC conductivity in the presence of a constant applied bias voltage between the samples, $V$, should be measured. We argue the the pairing fluctuations will produce randomly fluctuating Josephson current with zero mean, however the current-current correlator will have a characteristic frequency given by Josephson frequency $ω_J…
It has been argued by Zurek and Kibble that the likelihood of producing defects in a continuous phase transition depends in a characteristic way on the quench rate. In this paper we discuss an improved experiment for measuring the Zurek-Kibble scaling exponent $σ$ for the production of fluxons in annular symmetric Josephson Tunnel Junctions. We find $σ\simeq 0.5$. Further, we report accurate measurements of the junction gap voltage temperature dependence which allow for precise monitoring of the fast temperature variations during the quench.
We analyze the consequences resulting from the asymmetric boundary conditions imposed by a non-uniform external magnetic field at the extremities of a planar Josephson tunnel junction and predict a number of testable signatures. When the junction length $L$ is smaller than its Josephson penetration depth $λ_j$, static analytical calculations lead to a Fresnel-like magnetic diffraction pattern, rather than a Fraunhofer-like one typical of a uniform field. Numerical simulations allow to investigate intermediate length ($L\approx λ_j$) and long ($L>λ_j$) junctions. We consider both uniform and $δ…
We measured the magnetic field dependence of the critical current of high quality Nb-based planar Josephson tunnel junctions in the presence of a controllable non-uniform field distribution. We found skewed and slowly changing magnetic diffraction patterns quite dissimilar from the Fraunhofer-like ones typical of a homogeneous field. Our findings can be well interpreted in terms of recent theoretical predictions [R. Monaco, J. Appl. Phys. vol.108, 033906 (2010)] for a uniform magnetic field gradient leading to Fresnel-like magnetic diffraction patterns. We also show that Fiske resonances can b…
The existence of Josephson tunneling has been demonstrated between YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and Pb with the current flowing along the c-axis of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. This is presumed to come from an s-wave component of the superconductivity in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$, perhaps induced by the orthorhombic distortion. This hypothesis by itself appears to be in contradiction with experiments on twinned samples whose tunneling current does not follow random statistics. We present a theory which depends on a competition between the intertwin d-wave coupling and a relatively enhanced s-wave component …
The magnetic field effect in the Josephson tunneling between two d-wave superconductors are investigated. When the crystal orientation of one (or each) superconductor relative to the interface normal is such that midgap states exist at the interface, there is a component of the tunneling current due to the midgap states. For a junction with a flat {001}|{110} or {100}|{110} interface, this component is the predominant contribution to the current. The predicted current-field dependence differs entirely from the conventional Fraunhofer pattern, in agreement with a published measurement. This is …
