The dynamical behavior of a fluxon in a semi-annular long Josephson junction in the presence of an ac-drive is studied. The non-uniformity due to the non uniform distribution of bias current is investigated. The oscillating potential is found to increase the depinning current. Finite difference method is used for numerical analysis and the response of the system to the ac-bias is studied. The creation and annihilation of fluxon is also demonstrated numerically for the first, second and third Zero-Field step cases.
We prove that the equation modelling an annular Josephson junction has a rotating fluxon wave for all values of the parameters. We also obtain results on uniqueness of the rotating fluxon wave in some parameter regimes, and results on multiplicity of rotating fluxon waves in other parameter regimes.
Experimental observation of the unidirectional motion of a topological soliton driven by a bi-harmonic ac force of zero mean is reported. The observation is made by measuring the current-voltage characteristics for a fluxon trapped in an annular Josephson junction that was placed into a microwave field. The measured dependence of the fluxon mean velocity (rectified voltage) at zero dc bias versus the phase shift between the first and second harmonic of the driving force is in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations.
We present a theoretical and experimental study of Josephson vortex (fluxon) moving in the presence of spatially homogeneous dc and ac bias currents. By mapping this problem to the problem of calculating the current-voltage characteristic of a small Josephson junction, we derive the dependence of the average fluxon velocity on the dc bias current. In particular we find that the low frequency ac bias current results in an additional nonlinear damping of fluxon motion. Such ac induced damping crucially depends on the intrinsic damping parameter and increases drastically as this parameter is redu…
A novel dynamical effect is presented: systematic drift of a topological soliton in ac-driven weakly damped systems with periodic boundary conditions. The effect is demonstrated in detail for a long annular Josephson junction. Unlike earlier considered cases of the ac-driven motion of fluxons (kinks), in the present case the long junction is_spatially uniform_. Numerical simulations reveal that progressive motion of the fluxon commences if the amplitude of the ac drive exceeds a threshold value. The direction of the motion is randomly selected by initial conditions, and a strong hysteresis is …
We present a systematic study of the Cherenkov radiation of Josephson plasma waves by fast moving fluxon in a stack of coupled long Josephson junctions for different fluxon modes. It is found that at some values of parameters current-voltage characteristic may exhibit a region of the back-bending on the fluxon step. In the opposite limit the emission of the Cherenkov radiation takes place. In the annular junctions of moderate length the interaction of the emitted waves with fluxon results in the novel resonances which emerge on the top of the fluxon step. We present more exact formulas which d…
We investigate analytically long Josephson junctions with phase pi-discontinuity points. Such junctions are usually fabricated as a ramp between a superconductor like YBCO with d-wave symmetry of the order parameter and an s-wave superconductor like Nb. From the top, they look like zigzags with pi-jumps of the Josephson phase at the corners. These pi-jumps, at certain conditions, lead to the formation of half-integer flux quanta, which we call semi-fluxons, pinned at the corners. We derive a version of sine-Gordon equation which describes the dynamics of the Josephson phase in such structures,…
Interaction of a fluxon in the two-dimensional large Josephson junction with the finite area inhomogeneity is studied within the sine-Gordon theory. The spectral density of the emitted plane waves is computed exactly for the rectangular and rhombic inhomogeneities. Total emitted energy as a function of the fluxon velocity exhibits at least one local maximum. Connection to the previously studied limiting cases including the point impurity and the one-dimensional limit has been performed. An important feature o f the emitted energy as a function of the fluxon velocity is a clear maximum (or maxi…
We study static and dynamical properties of fluxons in a long annular Josephson junction (JJ) with a current injected at one point and collected back at a close point. Uniformly distributed dc bias current is applied too. We demonstrate that, in the limit of the infinitely small size of the current dipole, the critical value of the bias current density, above which static phase distributions do not exist, that was recently found (in the Fraunhofer's analytical form) for the annular JJ with the length much smaller than the Josephson penetration length, is valid irrespective of the junction's le…
We describe the dynamics of fluxons moving in a frustrated Josephson junction with p, d, and f-wave symmetry and calculate the I-V characteristics. The behavior of fluxons is quite distinct in the long and short length junction limit. For long junctions the intrinsic flux is bound at the center and the moving integer fluxon or antifluxon interacts with it only when it approaches the junction's center. For small junctions the intrinsic flux can move as a bunched type fluxon introducing additional steps in the I-V characteristics. Possible realization in quantum computation is presented.
Interaction of the fluxon with the finite size dipole impurity in the long Josephson junction is investigated. The impurity has polarity and will be referred to as a {\it dipole} impurity because it also has a direction and, consequently, changes its sign under the space inversion transform $x \to -x$. Such a model is used to describe the inductively coupled to the Josephson transmission line qubit and the misaligned Abrikosov vortex that penetrates into the long Josephson junction. We derive the approximate equations of motion for the fluxon center of mass and its velocity. With the help of t…
We investigate Josephson flux-flow in annular Josephson tunnel junctions (AJTJs) under the application of magnetic fields generating finite-voltage steps in their current-voltage characteristics. Experimental data are presented for confocal AJTJs which are the natural generalization of the well studied circular AJTJs for which flux flow effects have never been reported. Displaced linear slopes, Fiske step staircases and Eck steps were sequentially recorded at $4.2\,K$ with high-quality Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb confocal AJTJs when increasing the strength of a uniform magnetic field applied in the plane of…
Directed motion and depinning of topological solitons in a strongly discrete damped and biharmonically ac-driven array of Josephson junctions is studied. The mechanism of the depinning transition is investigated in detail. We show that the depinning process takes place through chaotization of an initially standing fluxon periodic orbit. Detailed investigation of the Floquet multipliers of these orbits shows that depending on the depinning parameters (either the driving amplitude or the phase shift between harmonics) the chaotization process can take place either along the period-doubling scena…
We investigate analytically and numerically the stability of bubble-like fluxons in disk-shaped heterogeneous Josephson junctions. Using ring solitons as a model of bubble fluxons in the two-dimensional sine-Gordon equation, we show that the insertion of coaxial dipole currents prevents their collapse. We characterize the onset of instability by introducing a single parameter that couples the radius of the bubble fluxon with the properties of the injected current. For different combination of parameters, we report the formation of stable oscillating bubbles, the emergence of internal modes, an…
We investigate the physics of planar annular Josephson tunnel junctions quenched through their transition temperature in the presence of an external magnetic field. Experiments carried out with long Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb annular junctions showed that the magnetic flux trapped in the high-quality doubly-connected superconducting electrodes forming the junction generates a persistent current whose associated magnetic field affects the both the static and dynamics properties of the junctions. More specifically, the field trapped in the hole of one electrode combined with a d.c. bias current induces a vis…
We consider a Josephson junction system installed with a finite length inhomogeneity, either of microresistor or of microresonator type. The system can be modelled by a sine-Gordon equation with a piecewise-constant function to represent the varying Josephson tunneling critical current. The existence of pinned fluxons depends on the length of the inhomogeneity, the variation in the Josephson tunneling critical current and the applied bias current. We establish that a system may either not be able to sustain a pinned fluxon, or - for instance by varying the length of the inhomogeneity - may exh…
We investigate experimentally a Josephson vortex ratchet -- a fluxon in an asymmetric periodic potential driven by a deterministic force with zero time average. The highly asymmetric periodic potential is created in an underdamped annular long Josephson junction by means of a current injector providing efficiency of the device up to 91%. We measured the ratchet effect for driving forces with different spectral content. For monochromatic high-frequency drive the rectified voltage becomes quantized. At high driving frequencies we also observe chaos, sub-harmonic dynamics and voltage reversal due…
We analyze motion of a fluxon in a weakly damped ac-driven long Josephson junction with a periodically modulated maximum Josephson current density. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that a pure {\it ac} bias current can drive the fluxon at a {\it resonant} mean velocity determined by the driving frequency and the spatial period of the modulation, provided that the drive amplitude exceeds a certain threshold value. In the range of strongly ``relativistic'' mean velocities, the agreement between results of a numerical solution of the effective (ODE) fluxon equation of motion and a…

We investigate experimentally a deterministic underdamped Josephson vortex ratchet -- a fluxon-particle moving along a Josephson junction in an asymmetric periodic potential. By applying a sinusoidal driving current one can compel the vortex to move in a certain direction, producing average dc voltage across the junction. Being in such a rectification regime we also load the ratchet, i.e., apply an additional dc bias current I_dc (counterforce) which tilts the potential so that the fluxon climbs uphill due to the ratchet effect. The value of the bias current at which the fluxon stops climbing …
Fluxon transmission through impurities of different shape in a quasi-one-dimensional long Josephson junction is investigated. The junction width is significantly less than its length but, at the same time, is of the order of the Josephson penetration length $λ_J$ or exceeds it. The retrapping current on the impurities of the point, line and rectangular shape is computed as a function of the junction width both numerically and analytically. Good agreement between the analytic formulae and the numerical simulation results for the intermediate (several $λ_J$) junction width is observed.
Fluxon transmission through several impurities of different strength and type (i.e., microshorts and microresistors), placed in a long Josephson junction is investigated. Threshold pinning current on the impurities is computed as a function of the distance between them, their amplitudes and the dissipation parameter. It is shown that in the case of consequently placed microshorts or microresistors, the threshold pinning current exhibits a clear minimum as a function of the distance between the impurities. In the case of a microresistor, followed by a microshort, an opposite phenomenon is obser…
Magnetic flux quanta, of value h/2e, in long Josephson junctions behave as (quasi) solitons. Fluxon dynamical states are well described by a perturbed sine-Gordon equation model, with boundary conditions determined by the junction geometry and by externally applied magnetic fields, and they give rise to readily measurable physical phenomena, such as step structure in current-voltage characteristics and microwave radiation emission. Devices based on fluxon propagation offer potentially interesting applications as oscillators and amplifiers - as well as digital applica- tions, described elsewher…
Dynamics of a fluxon in a stack of coupled long Josephson junctions is studied numerically. Based on the numerical simulations, we show that the dependence of the propagation velocity $c$ on the external bias current $γ$ is determined by the ratio of the critical currents of the two junctions $J$.
