We consider theoretically the effect of an inhomogeneous magnetoelectric coupling on the magnon-induced dynamics of a ferromagnet. The magnon-mediated magnetoelectric torque affects both the homogeneous magnetization and magnon-driven domain wall motion. In the domains, we predict a reorientation of the magnetization, controllable by the applied electric field, which is almost an order of magnitude larger than that observed in other physical systems via the same mechanism. The applied electric field can also be used to tune the domain wall speed and direction of motion in a linear fashion, producing domain wall velocities several times the zero field velocity. These results show that multiferroic systems offer a promising arena to achieve low-dissipation magnetization rotation and domain wall motion by exciting spin-waves.
We propose that the magnetoelectric effect in multiferroic insulators with coplanar antiferromagnetic spiral order, such as BiFeO$_{3}$, enables electrically controlled dissipationless magnonics. Applying an oscillating electric field in these materials with frequency as low as household frequency can activate Goldstone modes that manifests fast planar rotations of spins, whose motion is not obstructed by crystalline anisotropy. Combining with spin ejection mechanisms, such a fast planar rotation can deliver electricity at room temperature over a distance of the magnetic domain, which is free …
Conversion of thermal energy into magnonic spin currents and/or effective electric polarization promises new device functionalities. A versatile approach is presented here for generating and controlling open circuit magnonic spin currents and an effective multiferroicity at a uniform temperature with the aid of spatially inhomogeneous, external, static electric fields. This field applied to a ferromagnetic insulator with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type coupling changes locally the magnon dispersion and modifies the density of thermally excited magnons in a region of the scale of the field inhomog…
We discover that the way spin-waves exert magnetic torques in multiferroic materials can cause not only domain wall motion, but also magnetization dynamics for homogeneous magnetization textures. Interestingly, the domain wall motion can be controlled via purely electrical means with the spin-waves being generated by an ac electric field $E$ while the direction of the wall motion also is sensitive to an applied dc $E$ field. Moreover, we determine the interaction between spin-transfer torque from an electric current and a magnetic domain wall in multiferroics and show that the Walker breakdown…
We develop a theoretical description of electro-magnon solitons in a coupled ferroelectric-ferromagnetic heterostructure. The solitons are considered in the weakly nonlinear limit as a modulation of plane waves corresponding to two, electric- and magnetic-like branches in the spectrum. Emphasis is put on magnetic-like envelope solitons that can be created by an alternating electric field. It is shown also that the magnetic pulses can be amplified by an electric field with a frequency close to the band edge of the magnetic branch.
Many technological applications of multiferroics are based on their ability to reconstruct the domain structure (DS) under the action of small external fields. In the present paper we analyze the different scenarios of the DS behavior in a multiferroic that shows simultaneously ferro- and antiferromagnetic ordering on the different systems of magnetic ions. We consider the way to control a composition of the DS and macroscopic properties of the sample by an appropriate field treatment. We found out that sensitivity of the DS to the external magnetic field and the magnetic susceptibility in a l…
In multiferroic oxides with a transverse helical magnetic order, the magnetization exchange coupling is sinusoidally space-dependent. We theoretically investigate the spin-dependent electron grating effect in normal-metal/helical-multiferroic/ferromagnettic heterojunctions. The spin wave vector of the spiral can be added or subtracted from the electron spacial wave vector inducing spin-conserved and spin-flipped diffracted transmission and reflection. The predicted grating effect can be controlled by magnetization exchange coupling strength, the helicity spatial period, and the magnetization o…
Electric field induced magnetization switching in single-phase multiferroic materials is intriguing for both fundamental studies and potential technological applications. Here we develop a framework to study the switching dynamics of coupled polarization and magnetization in such multiferroic materials. With the coupling term between the polarization and magnetization as an invariant dictated by the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya vector, the dynamical systems study reveals switching failures and oscillatory mode of magnetization if the polarization and magnetization relax slowly during switching.
Multiferroics offer an elegant means to implement voltage-control and on the fly reconfigurability in microscopic, nanoscaled systems based on ferromagnetic materials. These properties are particularly interesting for the field of magnonics, where spin waves are used to perform advanced logical or analogue functions. Recently, the emergence of nano-magnonics {\color{black} is expected to} eventually lead to the large-scale integration of magnonic devices. However, a compact voltage-controlled, on demand reconfigurable magnonic system has yet to be shown. Here, we introduce the combination of m…
For applications making use of magnonic spin currents damping effects, which decrease the spin conductivity, have to be minimized. We here investigate the magnon transport in an yttrium iron garnet thin film with strongly reduced effective magnetization. We show that in a three-terminal device the effective magnon conductivity can be increased by a factor of up to six by a current applied to a modulator electrode, which generates damping compensation above a threshold current. Moreover, we find a linear dependence of this threshold current on the applied magnetic field. We can explain this beh…
The authors show that it is possible to rotate the magnetization of a multiferroic (strain-coupled two-layer magnetostrictive-piezoelectric) nanomagnet by a large angle with a small electrostatic potential. This can implement Bennett clocking in nanomagnetic logic arrays resulting in unidirectional propagation of logic bits from one stage to another. This method of Bennett clocking is superior to using spin-transfer torque or local magnetic fields for magnetization rotation. For realistic parameters, it is shown that a potential of ~ 0.2 V applied to a multiferroic nanomagnet can rotate its ma…
Using a magneto-optical pump-probe technique with micrometer spatial resolution we show that magnetization precession can be launched in individual magnetic domains imprinted in a Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$ (CoFeB) layer by elastic coupling to ferroelectric domains in a BaTiO$_{3}$ substrate. The dependence of the precession parameters on external magnetic field strength and orientation reveal that by laser-induced ultrafast partial quenching of the magnetoelastic coupling parameter of CoFeB by $\approx$27% along with 10% ultrafast demagnetization trigger the magnetization precession. The rela…
Electric-field induced magnetization switching in multiferroic magnetoelectric devices is promising for beyond Moore's law computing. We show here that interface-coupled multiferroic heterostructures, i.e., a ferroelectric layer coupled with a ferromagnetic layer, are particularly suitable for highly-dense, non-volatile, and ultra-low-energy computing. By solving stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of magnetization dynamics in the presence of room-temperature thermal fluctuations, we demonstrate that error-resilient switching of magnetization is possible in sub-nanosecond delay while e…
Electric field-induced magnetization switching in multiferroics is intriguing for both fundamental studies and potential technological applications. Here, we review the recent developments on electric field-induced magnetization switching in multiferroic heterostructures. Particularly, we study the dynamics of magnetization switching between the two stable states in a shape-anisotropic single-domain nanomagnet using stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation in the presence of thermal fluctuations. For magnetostrictive nanomagnets in strain-coupled multiferroic composites, such study of…

Using first-principles calculations we predict that the layered-perovskite metal Bi$_5$Mn$_5$O$_{17}$ is a ferromagnet, ferroelectric, and ferrotoroid which may realize the long sought-after goal of a room-temperature ferromagnetic single-phase multiferroic with large, strongly coupled, primary-order polarization and magnetization. Bi$_5$Mn$_5$O$_{17}$ has two nearly energy-degenerate ground states with mutually orthogonal vector order parameters (polarization, magnetization, ferrotoroidicity), which can be rotated globally by switching between ground states. Giant cross-coupling magnetoelectr…
We present a theory of magnetoelectric magnon-photon coupling in cavities hosting noncentrosymmetric magnets. Analogously to nonreciprocal phenomena in multiferroics, the magnetoelectric coupling is time-reversal and inversion asymmetric. This asymmetry establishes a means for exceptional tunability of magnon-photon coupling, which can be switched on and off by reversing the magnetization direction. Taking the multiferroic skyrmion-host Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ with ultralow magnetic damping as an example, we reveal the electrical activity of skyrmion eigenmodes and propose it for magnon-photon splittin…
We describe spin transfer in a ferromagnet/normal metal/ferromagnet spin-valve point contact. Spin is transferred from the spin-polarized device current to the magnetization of the free layer by the mechanism of incoherent magnon emission by electrons. Our approach is based on the rate equation for the magnon occupation, using Fermi's golden rule for magnon emission and absorption and the non-equilibrium electron distribution for a biased spin valve. The magnon emission reduces the magnetization of the free layer. For anti-parallel alignment of the magnetizations of the layers and at a critica…
It has been recently shown that multiferroic logic - where logic bits are encoded in the magnetization orientation of a nanoscale magnetostrictive layer elastically coupled to a piezoelectric layer - can be Bennett clocked with small electrostatic potentials of few tens of mV applied to the piezoelectric layer. The potential generates stress in the magnetostrictive layer and rotates its magnetization by a large angle to carry out Bennett clocking. This method of clocking is far more energy-efficient than using spin transfer torque. In order to assess if such a clocking scheme can be also reaso…
In a recent article, A. Chen et al. claimed that they have switched (rotated by ~90 degrees) the magnetization of the soft layer of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) in a non-volatile way with volatile strain by exploiting dipole interaction with the hard layer. I show that dipole interaction cannot cause this effect and the authors' explanation cannot be correct. An alternate explanation is offered.
Given the paucity of single phase multiferroic materials (with large ferromagnetic moment), composite systems seem an attractive solution in the quest to realize magnetoelectric cou-pling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. Despite having antiferro-magnetic order, BiFeO3 (BFO) has nevertheless been a key material in this quest due to excel-lent ferroelectric properties at room temperature. We studied a superlattice composed of 8 repetitions of 6 unit cells of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) grown on 5 unit cells of BFO. Significant net uncompensated magnetization in BFO is demonstr…
We investigate magnetization dynamics in a spin-Hall oscillator using a direct current measurement as well as conventional microwave spectrum analysis. When the current applies an anti-damping spin-transfer torque, we observe a change in resistance which we ascribe to the excitation of incoherent exchange magnons. A simple model is developed based on the reduction of the effective saturation magnetization, quantitatively explaining the data. The observed phenomena highlight the importance of exchange magnons on the operation of spin-Hall oscillators.
We demonstrate the dispersive measurement of ferromagnetic resonance in a yttrium iron garnet sphere embedded within a microwave cavity. The reduction in the longitudinal magnetization at resonance is measured as a frequency shift in the cavity mode coupled to the sphere. This measurement is a result of the intrinsic non-linearity in magnetization dynamics, indicating a promising route towards experiments in magnon cavity quantum electro-dynamics.
BiFe1-xCrxO3 (x=0.0, 0.05 and 0.1) nanoparticles are prepared by a combustion method without using any solvent. All the synthesized nanoparticles are single phase in nature, nearly spherical in shape and crystallize in distorted perovskite structure and space group R3c with an average crystallite size of the order of 40 nm. The room temperature magnetization observed in BiFeO3 nanoparticles is larger than that in the bulk. Increasing Cr doping leads to increase in the magnetization and coercivity. Strong superexchange interaction between Fe3+ and Cr3+ atoms is likely to give rise to such incre…
Magnetic materials in which it is possible to control the topology of their magnetic order in real space or the topology of their magnetic excitations in reciprocal space are highly sought-after as platforms for alternative data storage and computing architectures. Here we show that multiferroic insulators, owing to their magneto-electric coupling, offer a natural and advantageous way to address these two different topologies using laser fields. We demonstrate that via a delicate balance between the energy injection from a high-frequency laser and dissipation, single skyrmions -- archetypical …
In magnetic memory and logic devices, a magnet's magnetization is usually flipped with a spin polarized current delivering a spin transfer torque (STT). This mode of switching consumes too much energy and considerable energy saving can accrue from using a multiferroic nanomagnet switched with a combination of STT and mechanical stress generated with a voltage (VGS). The VGS mode consumes less energy than STT, but cannot rotate magnetization by more than 90?, so that a combination of the two modes is needed for energy-efficient switching.
Hybrid systems coupling quantum spin defects (QSD) and magnons can enable unique spintronic device functionalities and probes for magnetism. Here, we add electric field control of magnon-QSD coupling to such systems by integrating ferromagnet-ferroelectric multiferroic with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center spins. Combining quantum relaxometry with ferromagnetic resonance measurements and analytical modeling, we reveal that the observed electric-field tuning results from ferroelectric polarization control of the magnon-generated fields at the NV. Exploiting the demonstrated control, we also propose…
Thermal vector potential formulation is applied to study thermal dynamics of magnetic structures in insulating ferromagnets. By separating variables of the magnetic structure and magnons, the equation of motion for the structure including spin-transfer effect due to thermal magnons is derived in the case of a domain wall and a vortex. The magnon current is evaluated based on a linear response theory with respect to the thermal vector potential representing the temperature gradient. It is shown that the velocity of a domain wall when driven by thermal magnon has a strong temperature dependence …
Nanomagnetic memory and logic are currently seen as promising candidates to replace current digital computing architectures due to its superior energy-efficiency, non-volatility and propensity for highly dense and low-power applications. In this work, we investigate the use of shape engineering (concave and diamond shape) to introduce biaxial anisotropy in single domain nanomagnets, giving rise to multiple easy and hard axes. Such nanomagnets, with dimensions of 100 nm x 100 nm, double the logic density of conventional two-state nanomagnetic devices by encoding more information (four binary bi…
This paper reviews the recent developments on building nanoelectronics for our future information processing paradigm using multiferroic composites. With appropriate choice of materials, when a tiny voltage of few tens of millivolts is applied across a multiferroic composite, i.e. a piezoelectric layer stain-coupled with a magnetostrictive layer, the piezoelectric layer gets strained and the generated stress in the magnetostrictive layer switches the magnetization direction between its two stable states. We particularly review the switching dynamics of magnetization and calculation of associat…
Generally the adiabatic quantum pumping phenomenon can be interpreted by the surface integral of the Berry curvature inside the cyclic loop. Spin angular momentum flow without charge current can be pumped out by magnetization precession in ferromagnet-based structures. When an electron is scattered by a helimagnet, spin-dependent diffraction occurs due to the spatial modulation of the spiral. In this work, we consider the charge and spin flow driven by magnetization precession in normal-metal/multiferroic-helimagnet/ferromagnet heterostructures. The pumping behavior is governed by the diffract…
The discovery of the ultrafast magnetization dynamics twenty years ago has led to a broad variety of experimental techniques to explore phenomena in magnetic materials with high temporal resolution. In the present article we present a study dealing with broadband excitation of spin-wave packets at different magnonic crystal continuous magnetic film interfaces. Similar to protected conducting states on the surfaces of topological band insulators, these interfaces exhibit surface spin-wave modes that propagate out of the crystal into the continuous film. The propagation distance depends on the d…
The switching dynamics of a multiferroic nanomagnetic NAND gate with fan-in/fan-out is simulated by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation while neglecting thermal fluctuation effects. The gate and logic wires are implemented with dipole-coupled 2-phase (magnetostrictive/piezoelectric) multiferroic elements that are clocked with electrostatic potentials of ~50 mV applied to the piezoelectric layer generating 10 MPa stress in the magnetostrictive layers for switching. We show that a pipeline bit throughput rate of ~ 0.5 GHz is achievable with proper magnet layout and sinusoidal four…
Non reciprocal spin waves have a chiral asymmetry so that their energy is different for two opposite wave vectors. They are found in atomically thin ferromagnetic overlayers with in plane magnetization and are linked to the anti-symmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya surface exchange. We use an itinerant fermion theory based on first principles calculations to predict that non-reciprocal magnons can occur in Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, the first stand alone metallic two dimensional crystal with off-plane magnetization. We find that both the energy and lifetime of magnons are non-reciprocal and we predict that ac…
Electric field-induced magnetization switching in multiferroics holds profound promise for ultra-low-energy computing in beyond Moore's law era. Bistable nanomagnets in the multiferroics are usually deemed to be suitable for storing a binary bit of information and switching between the two stable states allows us to process digital information. However, it requires to process continuous analog signals too for seamless integration of nanomagnetic devices in our future information processing systems. Here, we show that it is possible to harness the analog nature in the magnetostrictive nanomagne…
The primary impediment to continued downscaling of traditional charge-based electronic devices in accordance with Moore's law is the excessive energy dissipation that takes place in the device during switching of bits. One very promising solution is to utilize multiferroic heterostructures, comprised of a single-domain magnetostrictive nanomagnet strain-coupled to a piezoelectric layer, in which the magnetization can be switched between its two stable states while dissipating minuscule amount of energy. However, no efficient and viable means of computing is proposed so far. Here we show that s…
We propose and numerically evaluate a protocol to generate an arbitrary quantum state of the magnetization in a magnet. The protocol involves repeatedly exciting a frequency-tunable superconducting transmon and transferring the excitations to the magnet via a microwave cavity. To avoid decay, the protocol must be much shorter than magnon lifetime. Speeding up the protocol by simply shortening the pulses leads to non-resonant leakage of excitations to higher levels of the transmon accompanied by higher decoherence. We discuss how to correct for such leakages by applying counter pulses to de-exc…
We investigate the dynamics of two coupled macrospins connected to thermal baths at different temperatures. The system behaves like a diode which allows the propagation of energy and mag- netization currents in one direction only. This effect is described by a simple model of two coupled nonlinear oscillators interacting with two independent reservoirs. It is shown that the rectification phenomenon can be interpreted as a a stochastic phase synchronization of the two spin-oscillators. A brief comparison with realistic micromagnetic simulations is presented. This new effect yields promising opp…
Electrostatic gating confines and controls the transport of electrons in integrated circuits. Magnons, the quanta of spin waves of the magnetic order, are promising alternative information carriers, but difficult to gate. Here we report that superconducting strips on top of thin magnetic films can totally reflect magnons by its diamagnetic response to the magnon stray fields. The induced large frequency shifts unidirectionally blocks the magnons propagating normal to the magnetization. Two superconducting gates parallel to the magnetization create a magnonic cavity. The option to gate coherent…
We study transport phenomena cross-correlated among the heat and electric currents of magnons and Dirac electrons on the surface of ferromagnetic topological insulators. For a perpendicular magnetization, we calculate magnon- (electron-) drag anomalous Nernst/Seebeck (anomalous Ettingshausen/Peltier) effects and magnon-/electron-drag thermal Hall effects. The magnon-drag thermoelectric effects are interpreted to be caused by magnon-induced electromotive force. When the magnetization has in-plane components, there arise thermal/thermoelectric analogs of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). In t…
Nanomagnets with biaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy have four stable magnetization orientations that can encode 4-state logic bits (00), (01), (11) and (10). Recently, a 4-state NOR gate derived from three such nanomagnets, interacting via dipole interaction, was proposed. Here, we devise a Bennett clocking scheme to propagate 4-state logic bits unidirectionally between such gates. The nanomagnets are assumed to be made of 2-phase strain-coupled magnetostrictive/piezoelectric multiferroic elements, such as nickel and lead zirconate titanate (PZT). A small voltage of 200 mV applied across th…
The recent experiment [Y. Wang et al., Science 366, 1125 (2019)] on magnon-mediated spin-transfer torque (MSTT) was interpreted in terms of a picture where magnons are excited within an antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI), by applying nonequilibrium electronic spin density at one of its surfaces, so that their propagation across AFI deprived of conduction electrons eventually leads to reversal of magnetization of a ferromagnetic metal (FM) attached to the opposite surface of AFI. We employ a recently developed time-dependent nonequilibrium Green functions combined with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilber…
We investigate theoretically the dynamic multiferroic response of coupled ferroelectric/ferromagnetic composites upon excitation by a photo-induced acoustic strain pulse. Two magnetoelectric mechanisms are considered: interface strain- and charge-mediated magnetoelectric couplings. The former results in demagnetization, depolarization and repolarization within tens of picoseconds via respectively magnetostriction and piezoelectricity. Charge magnetoelectric interaction affects the ferroelectric/ferromagnetic feedback response leading to magnetization recovery. Experimental realization based on…
We show that the interaction between spin-polarized current and magnetization dynamics can be used to implement black-hole and white-hole horizons for magnons - the quanta of oscillations in the magnetization direction in magnets. We consider three different systems: easy-plane ferromagnetic metals, isotropic antiferromagnetic metals, and easy-plane magnetic insulators. Based on available experimental data, we estimate that the Hawking temperature can be as large as 1 K. We comment on the implications of magnonic horizons for spin-wave scattering and transport experiments, and for magnon entan…
Recent experiments have established a qualitative difference between the magnetization temperature-dependences $M(T)$ of quantum Hall ferromagnets at integer and fractional filling factors. We explain this difference in terms of the relative energies of collective magnon and particle-hole excitations in the two cases. Analytic calculations for hard-core model systems are used to demonstrate that, in the fractional case, interactions suppress the magnetization at finite temperatures and that particle-hole excitations rather than long-wavelength magnons control $M(T)$ at low $T$.
