We consider a simplified model in which Majorana fermion dark matter annihilates to charged fermions through exchange of charged mediators. We consider the gamma-ray signals arising from the processes $XX \rightarrow \bar f f γ$, $γγ$, and $γZ$ in the most general case, including non-trivial fermion mass and non-trivial left-right mixing and $CP$-violating phase for the charged mediators. In particular, we find the most general spectrum for internal bremsstrahlung, which interpolates between the regimes dominated by virtual internal bremsstrahlung and by final state radiation. We also examine the variation in the ratio $σ(γγ) / σ(γZ)$ and the helicity asymmetry in the $XX \rightarrow γγ$ process, each as a function of mixing angle and $CP$-violating phase. As an application, we apply these results to searches for a class of MSSM models.
An excess in gamma-rays from the galactic center observed by the Fermi Large Area Telescope has been proposed as a possible signal of dark matter annihilation. Recently, the Fermi collaboration showed that systematic errors broaden the range of spectral shapes for this excess. We demonstrate fits to this range for (1) flavor-violating annihilations to top-charm pairs and (2) annihilations to on-shell bosonic mediators which decay to Standard Model quarks in a boosted frame. Annihilation of 40 - 100 GeV DM to pairs of spin-1 mediators provide a good fit to the Fermi-LAT spectrum with a normaliz…
The apparent excess of gamma rays in an extended region in the direction of the galactic center has a spatial distribution and amplitude that are suggestive of dark matter annihilations. If this excess is indeed due to dark matter annihilations, it would indicate the presence of both dark matter and an additional particle beyond the Standard Model that mediates the interactions between the dark matter and Standard Model states. We introduce reference models describing dark matter annihilation to pairs of these new mediators, which decouples the SM-mediator coupling from the thermal annihilatio…
We consider the indirect detection of dark matter that is captured in the Sun and subsequently annihilates to long-lived dark mediators. If these mediators escape the Sun before decaying, they can produce striking gamma ray signals, either via the decay of the mediators directly to photons, or via bremsstrahlung and hadronization of the mediator decay products. Using recent measurements from the HAWC Observatory, we determine model-independent limits on heavy dark matter that are orders of magnitude more powerful than direct detection experiments, for both spin-dependent and spin-independent s…
We present here a study of the direct and indirect detection prospects of a generic dark matter simplified model, in which the Majorana dark matter interacts only with a Standard Model lepton and a pair of uncolored mixing scalar mediators. We first show that the mixing angle significantly changes the feature of internal bremsstrahlung, as well as the flux ratio of $γγ$ and $γZ$ line signals. The $CP$-violation phase will introduce an polarization asymmetry in the $γγ$ final state. Then we study the direct detection prospect and discuss the complimentarity of these two search strategies.
In this article, we focus on a new scalar $ϕ$ mediated scalar/vectorial WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles) with $ϕ$'s mass slightly below the WIMP mass. To explain the Galactic center 1 - 3 GeV gamma-ray excess, here we consider the case that a WIMP pair predominantly annihilates into an on-shell $ϕϕ$ pair with $ϕ$ mainly decaying to $τ\barτ$. The masses of WIMPs are in a range about 14 - 22 GeV, and the annihilations of WIMPs are phase space suppressed today. In this annihilation scheme, the couplings of the $ϕ$ - standard model (SM) particles are almost arbitrary small, and the WIM…
We study the scenario of fermionic dark matter that annihilates to standard model fermions through an s-channel axial vector mediator. We point out that the well-known chirality suppression of the annihilation cross section can be alleviated by s-channel internal Higgsstrahlung. The shapes of the cosmic ray spectra are identical to that of t-channel internal Higgsstrahlung in the limit of a heavy mediating particle. Unlike the general case of t-channel bremsstrahlung, s-channel Higgsstrahlung can be the dominant annihilation process even for Dirac dark matter. Since the s-channel mediator can …
Cosmic-ray (CR) antihelium is an important probe for the indirect search of dark matter (DM) annihilation in the Galaxy. However, due to stringent constraints from the measurements of CR antiprotons and $γ$-rays, the flux of CR antihelium from the conventional DM direct annihilation into Standard Model final states is expected to be far below the sensitivity of the current experiments. We show that the production of antihelium can be significantly enhanced if the DM particles annihilate through light mediator particles with a mass $m_ϕ\approx 8$ GeV close to the antihelium production threshold…
DarkCapPy is a Python 3/Jupyter package for calculating rates associated with dark matter capture in the Earth, annihilation into light mediators, and the subsequent observable decay of the light mediators near the surface of the Earth. The package includes a calculation of the Sommerfeld enhancement at the center of the Earth and the timescale for capture--annihilation equilibrium. The code is open source and can be modified for other compact astronomical objects and mediator spins.
We show that in the scenario where dark matter (DM) particles annihilate through light mediators, the energy spectra of the final state cosmic-ray particles depend strongly on the mediator mass. For final state antiprotons, a spectrum with relatively narrow peak occurs when the mediator mass is comparable to the $\pbar p$ production threshold. Of interest, the latest AMS-02 data on the $\pbar/p$ flux ratio hint at a bump-like excess over the expected background in the energy range $\sim100-450$ GeV. We show that such a light mediator scenario is favoured by the latest AMS-02 data over the scen…
We investigate the relation between the annihilation of dark matter (DM) particles into lepton pairs and into 2-body final states including one or two photons. We parametrize the DM interactions with leptons in terms of contact interactions, and calculate the loop-level annihilation into monochromatic gamma rays, specifically computing the ratio of the DM annihilation cross sections into two gamma rays versus lepton pairs. While the loop-level processes are generically suppressed in comparison with the tree-level annihilation into leptons, we find that some choices for the mediator spin and co…
The cosmic electron energy spectrum recently observed by the DAMPE experiment exhibits two interesting features, including a break around 0.9 TeV and a sharp resonance near 1.4 TeV. In this analysis, we propose a dark matter explanation to both exotic features seen by DAMPE. In our model, dark matter annihilates in the galaxy via two different channels that lead to both a narrow resonance spectrum near 1.4 TeV and electron excess events over an extended energy range thus generating the break structure around TeV. The two annihilation channels are mediated by two gauge bosons that interact both…
We present simplified models for the galactic center gamma-ray excess where Dirac dark matter annihilates into pairs or triplets of on-shell bosonic mediators to the Standard Model. These annihilation modes allow the dark matter mass to be heavier than those of conventional effective theories for the gamma-ray excess. Because the annihilation rate is set by the dark matter--mediator coupling, the Standard Model coupling can be made parametrically small to `hide' the dark sector by suppressing direct detection and collider signals. We explore the viability of these models as a thermal relic and…
The density spike of dark matter (DM) in the subparsec region near the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center can provide potentially observable gamma-ray signals coming from DM annihilations. Taking Fermi-$LAT$ data for the gamma-ray flux from the point source 3FGL J1745.6-2859c (Sgr A*), we calculate the resulting constraints on generic models of DM, allowing for the possibility of a non-negligible velocity-dependent component of the annihilation cross section. We consider a variety of selections for the astrophysical parameters that describe the spike profile and find that the gamma…
We analyze the direct detection signals of a toy model consisting of a Dirac dark matter particle which couples to one Standard Model fermion via a scalar mediator. For all scenarios, the dark matter particle scatters off nucleons via one loop-induced electromagnetic and electroweak moments, as well as via the one-loop exchange of a Higgs boson. Besides, and depending on the details of the model, the scattering can also be mediated at tree level via the exchange of the scalar mediator or at one loop via gluon-gluon interactions. We show that, for thermally produced dark matter particles, the c…
Observations by the Fermi-LAT telescope have uncovered a significant $γ$-ray excess toward the Milky Way Galactic Center. There has been no detection of a similar signal in the direction of the Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Additionally, astronomical observations indicate that dwarf galaxies and other faint galaxies are less dense than predicted by the simplest cold dark matter models. We show that a self-interacting dark matter model with a particle mass of roughly 50 GeV annihilating to the mediator responsible for the strong self-interaction can simultaneously explain all three obser…
We review simplified models in which a singlet Majorana dark matter candidate couples to Standard Model (SM) fermions through interactions mediated by scalar fermion partners. We summarize the two primary production mechanisms in these scenarios: dark matter annihilation mediated by first or second generation scalar fermion partners with significant left-right chiral mixing and co-annihilation with scalar fermion partners nearly degenerate in mass with the dark matter. We then highlight the most interesting phenomenological aspects of charged mediator models relevant for current and future sea…
We systematically study models with light scalar and pseudoscalar dark matter candidates and their potential signals at the LHC. First, we derive cosmological bounds on models with the Standard Model Higgs mediator and with a new weak-scale mediator. Next, we study two processes inspired by the indirect and direct detection process topologies, now happening inside the LHC detectors. We find that LHC can observe very light dark matter over a huge mass range if it is produced in mediator decays and then scatters with the detector material to generate jets in the nuclear recoil.
We consider dark matter annihilation into a general set of final states of Standard Model particles, including two-body and four-body final states that result from the decay of intermediate states. For dark matter masses ~10-10^5 GeV, we use updated data from Planck and from high gamma-ray experiments such as Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, and VERITAS to constrain the annihilation cross section for each final state. The Planck constraints are the most stringent over the entire mass range for annihilation into light leptons, and the Fermi-LAT constraints are the most stringent for four-body final states up …
We consider self-annihilation of dark matter, $χ$, into metastable mediators, $Y$, and their subsequent decay into photons inside white dwarfs. We focus on reactions of the type $χ\barχ\rightarrow YY$, where mediators, besides having a finite decay lifetime at rest $τ_{\rm rest}\lesssim 1$ s, may suffer energy loss in the medium before they decay into photons, $Y \rightarrow γγ$. We obtain attenuated gamma-ray luminosities arising from the combination of both effects. Using complementary sets of astrophysical measurements from cold white dwarfs in the M4 globular cluster as well as direct/indi…
We investigate the thermal cosmology and terrestrial and astrophysical phenomenology of a sub-GeV hadrophilic dark sector. The specific construction explored in this work features a Dirac fermion dark matter candidate interacting with a light scalar mediator that dominantly couples to the up-quark. The correct freeze-out relic abundance may be achieved via dark matter annihilation directly to hadrons or through secluded annihilation to scalar mediators. A rich and distinctive phenomenology is present in this scenario, with probes arising from precision meson decays, proton beam dump experiment…
Coupling dark matter to light new particles is an attractive way to combine thermal production with strong velocity-dependent self-interactions. Here we point out that in such models the dark matter annihilation rate is generically enhanced by the Sommerfeld effect, and we derive the resulting constraints from the Cosmic Microwave Background and other indirect detection probes. For the frequently studied case of s-wave annihilation these constraints exclude the entire parameter space where the self-interactions are large enough to address the small-scale problems of structure formation.
We consider a dark sector consisting of dark matter that is a Dirac fermion and a scalar mediator. This model has been extensively studied in the past. If the scalar couples to the dark matter in a parity conserving manner then dark matter annihilation to two mediators is dominated by the P-wave channel and hence is suppressed at very low momentum. The indirect detection constraint from the anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background is usually thought to be absent in the model because of this suppression. In this letter we show that dark matter annihilation to bound states occurs through th…
The secluded dark matter resides within a hidden sector and self-annihilates into lighter mediators which subsequently decay to the Standard Model (SM) particles. Depending on the coupling strength of the mediator to the SM, the hidden sector can be kinetically decoupled from the SM bath when the temperature drops below the mediator's mass, and the dark matter annihilation cross section at freeze-out is thus possible to be boosted above the conventional value of weak interacting massive particles. We present a comprehensive study on thermodynamic evolution of the hidden sector from the first p…
Dark matter capture and annihilation in the Sun can produce detectable high-energy neutrinos, providing a probe of the dark matter-proton scattering cross section. We consider the case when annihilation proceeds via long-lived dark mediators, which allows gamma rays to escape the Sun and reduces the attenuation of neutrinos. For gamma rays, there are exciting new opportunities, due to detailed measurements of GeV solar gamma rays with Fermi, and unprecedented sensitivities in the TeV range with HAWC and LHAASO. For neutrinos, the enhanced flux, particularly at higher energies ($\sim$TeV), allo…
In this work we perform an analysis of the recent AMS-02 antiproton flux and the antiproton-to-proton ratio in the framework of simplified dark matter models. To predict the AMS-02 observables we adopt the propagation and injection parameters determined by the observed fluxes of nuclei. We assume that the dark matter particle is a Dirac fermionic dark matter, with leptophobic pseudoscalar or axialvector mediator that couples only to Standard Model quarks and dark matter particles. We find that the AMS-02 observations are consistent with the dark matter hypothesis within the uncertainties. The …

In light of the observed Galactic center gamma-ray excess, we investigate a simplified model, for which the scalar dark matter interacts with quarks through a pseudoscalar mediator. The viable regions of the parameter space, that can also account for the relic density and evade the current searches, are identified, if the low-velocity dark matter annihilates through an $s$-channel off-shell mediator mostly into $\bar{b} b$, and/or annihilates directly into two ${\it hidden}$ on-shell mediators, which subsequently decay into the quark pairs. These two kinds of annihilations are $s$ wave. The pr…
Short-lived mediators are often used to describe dark matter interactions with Standard Model particles. When the dark matter mass is heavier than the mass of the mediator, it may self-annihilate into short-lived mediators, and in some cases this might be the dominant annihilation channel. This scenario is known as secluded dark matter. We use Fermi-LAT observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies, H.E.S.S. data from the Galactic center, and Planck measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background to constrain secluded dark matter. We explore the interplay between these experiments and we assess th…
The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) recently released measurements of the electron spectrum with a hint of a narrow peak at about 1.4 TeV. We investigate dark matter (DM) models that could produce such a signal by annihilation in a nearby subhalo whilst simultaneously satisfying constraints from DM searches. In our model-independent approach, we consider all renormalizable interactions via a spin 0 or 1 mediator between spin 0 or 1/2 DM particles and the Standard Model leptons. We find that of the 20 combinations, 10 are ruled out by velocity or helicity suppression of the annihilation c…
We consider the indirect detection signals for a self-consistent hidden $U(1)$ model containing a Majorana dark matter candidate, $χ$, a dark gauge boson, $Z'$, and a dark Higgs, $s$. Compared with a model containing only a dark matter candidate and $Z'$ mediator, the addition of the scalar provides a mass generation mechanism for the dark sector particles and is required in order to avoid unitarity violation at high energies. We find that the inclusion of the two mediators opens up a new two-body s-wave annihilation channel, $χ\overlineχ\rightarrow sZ'$. This new process, which is missed in t…
We report the results of a global analysis of dark matter simplified models (DMSMs) with leptophobic mediator particles of spin one, considering the cases of both vector and axial-vector interactions with dark matter (DM) particles and quarks. We require the DMSMs to provide all the cosmological DM density indicated by Planck and other observations, and we impose the upper limits on spin-independent and -dependent scattering from direct DM search experiments. We also impose all relevant LHC constraints from searches for monojet events and measurements of the dijet mass spectrum. We model the l…
We consider a scenario, within the framework of the MSSM, in which dark matter is bino-like and dark matter-nucleon spin-independent scattering occurs via the exchange of light squarks which exhibit left-right mixing. We show that direct detection experiments such as LUX and SuperCDMS will be sensitive to a wide class of such models through spin-independent scattering. Moreover, these models exhibit properties, such as isospin violation, that are not typically observed for the MSSM LSP if scattering occurs primarily through Higgs exchange. The dominant nuclear physics uncertainty is the quark …
We present a comprehensive study of a model where the dark matter is composed of a singlet real scalar that couples to the Standard Model predominantly via a Yukawa interaction with a light quark and a colored vector-like fermion. A distinctive feature of this scenario is that thermal freeze-out in the early universe may be driven by annihilation both into gluon pairs at one-loop ($gg$) and by virtual internal Bremsstrahlung of a gluon ($q \bar{q} g$). Such a dark matter candidate may also be tested through direct and indirect detection and at the LHC; viable candidates have either a mass near…
We consider direct detection prospects for a class of simplified models of fermionic dark matter (DM) coupled to left and right-handed Standard Model fermions via two charged scalar mediators with arbitrary mixing angle $α$. DM interactions with the nucleus are mediated by higher electromagnetic moments, which, for Majorana DM, is the anapole moment. After giving a full analytic calculation of the anapole moment, including its $α$ dependence, and matching with limits in the literature, we compute the DM-nucleon scattering cross-section and show the LUX and future LZ constraints on the paramete…
We explore regions of parameter space that give rise to suppressed direct detection cross sections in a simple model of scalar dark matter with a scalar portal that mixes with the standard model Higgs. We found that even this simple model allows considerable room in the parameter space that has not been excluded by direct detection limits. A number of effects leading to this result have been previously noted. Our main new result explores interference effects between different contributions to DM annihilation when the DM mass is larger than the scalar portal mass. New annihilation channels open…
Dark matter particles could annihilate into light and metastable mediators subsequently decaying far away from where they are produced. In this scenario, the indirect signatures of dark matter are altered with respect to the conventional situation where standard model particles are directly injected where annihilation happens. We explore here this new phenomenology for which we devise the tools. We calculate the effective dark matter distribution resulting from the smearing by mediator propagation. We derive the fluxes of mediators and their decay particles. We study how the $J$-factor, which …
Recent Fermi-LAT observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Milky Way have placed strong limits on the gamma-ray flux from dark matter annihilation. In order to produce the strongest limit on the dark matter annihilation cross-section, the observations of each dwarf galaxy have typically been "stacked" in a joint-likelihood analysis, utilizing optical observations to constrain the dark matter density profile in each dwarf. These limits have typically been computed only for singular annihilation final states, such as $b\bar{b}$ or $τ^+τ^-$. In this paper, we generalize this approach by pr…
In face of the small-scale structure problems of the collisionless cold dark matter (DM) paradigm, a popular remedy is to introduce a strong DM self-interaction which can be generated nonperturbatively by a MeV-scale light mediator. However, if such the mediator is unstable and decays into SM particles, the model is severely constrained by the DM direct and indirect detection experiments. In the present paper, we study a model of a self-interacting fermionic DM, endowed with a light stable scalar mediator. In this model, the DM relic abundance is dominated by the fermionic DM particle which is…
We discuss universal signals of consistent models of pseudoscalar mediators for collider searches for Dark Matter. Keeping only the degrees of freedom that can not be decoupled due to consistency conditions, we present a universality class of simplified models with pseudoscalar mediators and renormalizable couplings to Standard Model fields. We compute stability and perturbativity constraints, constraints from electroweak precision measurements, collider searches for new heavy particles as well as constraints from relic density measurements and indirect detection experiments searching for sign…
We test the plausibility that a Majorana fermion dark matter candidate with a scalar mediator explains the gamma ray excess from the Galactic center. Assuming that the mediator couples to all third generation fermions we calculate observables for dark matter abundance and scattering on nuclei, gamma, positron, and anti-proton cosmic ray fluxes, radio emission from dark matter annihilation, and the effect of dark matter annihilations on the CMB. After discarding the controversial radio observation the rest of the data prefers a dark matter (mediator) mass in the 10-100 (3-1000) GeV region and w…
We propose to interpret the DAMPE electron excess at 1.5 TeV through scalar or Dirac fermion dark matter (DM) annihilation with doubly charged scalar mediators that have lepton-specific Yukawa couplings. Hierarchy of such lepton-specific Yukawa couplings is generated through the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, so that the dark matter annihilation products can be dominantly electrons. Stringent constraints from LEP2 on intermediate vector boson production can be evaded in our scenarios. In the case of scalar DM, we discuss one scenario with DM annihilating directly to leptons and the other scenario…
We study a scenario in which the only light new particles are a Majorana fermion dark matter candidate and one or more QCD-charged scalars, which couple to light quarks. This scenario has several interesting phenomenological features if the new particles are nearly degenerate in mass. In particular, LHC searches for the light scalars have reduced sensitivity, since the visible and invisible products tend to be softer. Moreover, dark matter-scalar co-annihilation can allow even relatively heavy dark matter candidates to be consistent thermal relics. Finally, the dark matter nucleon scattering c…
In the current work, We investigated the production of neutral Higgs boson and two charged Charginos owing to electron-positron annihilation via different propagators
