We study effects of charge self-consistency within the combination of density functional theory (DFT; Wien2k) with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT; w2dynamics) in a basis of maximally localized Wannier orbitals. Using the example of two cuprates, we demonstrate that even if there is only a single Wannier orbital with fixed filling, a noteworthy charge redistribution can occur. This effect stems from a reoccupation of the Wannier orbital in k-space when going from the single, metallic DFT band to the split, insulating Hubbard bands of DMFT. We analyze another charge self-consistency effect beyond moving charge from one site to another: the correlation-enhanced orbital polarization in a freestanding layer of SrVO3.
We investigate the effect of charge self-consistency (CSC) in density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations compared to simpler "one-shot" calculations for materials where interaction effects lead to a strong redistribution of electronic charges between different orbitals or between different sites. We focus on two systems close to a metal-insulator transition, for which the importance of CSC is currently not well understood. Specifically, we analyze the strain-related orbital polarization in the correlated metal CaVO$_3$ and the spontaneous electronic char…
The temperature dependence and anisotropy of optical spectral weights associated with different multiplet transitions is determined by the spin and orbital correlations. To provide a systematic basis to exploit this close relationship between magnetism and optical spectra, we present and analyze the spin-orbital superexchange models for a series of representative orbital-degenerate transition metal oxides with different multiplet structure. For each case we derive the magnetic exchange constants, which determine the spin wave dispersions, as well as the partial optical sum rules. The magnetic …
In order for methods combining ab initio density-functional theory and many-body techniques to become routinely used, a flexible, fast, and easy-to-use implementation is crucial. We present an implementation of a general charge self-consistent scheme based on projected localized orbitals in the projector augmented wave framework in the Vienna Ab Initio Simulation Package (VASP). We give a detailed description on how the projectors are optimally chosen and how the total energy is calculated. We benchmark our implementation in combination with dynamical mean-field theory: first we study the char…
We present a simple implementation of the dynamical mean-field theory approach to the electronic structure of strongly correlated materials. This implementation achieves full self-consistency over the charge density, taking into account correlation-induced changes to the total charge density and effective Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian. A linear muffin-tin orbital basis-set is used, and the charge density is computed from moments of the many body momentum-distribution matrix. The calculation of the total energy is also considered, with a proper treatment of high-frequency tails of the Green's function …
Using density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory method (DFT+DMFT) with full self-consistency over the charge density, we study the effect of electronic correlations on the electronic structure, magnetic properties, orbital-dependent band renormalizations, and Fermi surface of the tetragonal phase of bulk FeS. We perform a direct structural optimization of the $P_4/nmm$ crystal structure of paramagnetic FeS, with respect to the lattice constant $a$ and the internal coordinate $z_\mathrm{S}$ of atom S. Our results show an anomalous sensitivity of the electronic structure and magnetic p…
We report an implementation of the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) method within the projector augmented-wave framework. It allows for the calculation of the screened interaction in the same Wannier orbitals as our recent DFT+U and DFT+DMFT implementations. We present calculations of the dynamical Coulomb screened interaction in uranium dioxide and alpha and gamma cerium on Wannier functions. We show that a self-consistent calculation of the static screened interaction in DFT+U together with a consistent Wannier basis is mandatory for gamma cerium and uranium dioxide. We emphasiz…
We present algorithmic and implementation details for the fully self-consistent finite-temperature $GW$ method in Gaussian Bloch orbitals for solids. Our implementation is based on the finite-temperature Green's function formalism in which all equations are solved on the imaginary axis, without resorting to analytical continuation during the self-consistency. No quasiparticle approximation is employed and all matrix elements of the self-energy are explicitly evaluated. The method is tested by evaluating the band gaps of selected semiconductors and insulators. We show agreement with other, diff…
The magnetic properties of the transition metal monoxides MnO and NiO are investigated at equilibrium and under pressure via several advanced first-principles methods coupled with Heisenberg Hamiltonian MonteCarlo. The comparative first-principles analysis involves two promising beyond-local density functionals approaches, namely the hybrid density functional theory and the recently developed variational pseudo-self-interaction correction method, implemented with both plane-wave and atomic-orbital basis sets. The advanced functionals deliver a very satisfying rendition, curing the main drawbac…
We show that for multi-orbital quantum impurity models the non-crossing approximation and one-crossing approximation versions of the self-consistent hybridization expansions violate the sum rules relating the coefficients of the high-frequency expansion of the self energy and the product of the self energy and Green function to thermodynamic expectation values. Comparison of non-crossing/one-crossing results to numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo calculations shows that the consistency with sum rules provides a useful estimate of the reliability of the approximations. The sum rule violations…
The tailored coupled cluster (TCC) approach is a promising ansatz that preserves the simplicity of single-reference coupled cluster theory, while incorporating a multi-reference wave function through amplitudes obtained from a preceding multi-configurational calculation. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the TCC wave function based on model systems, which require an accurate description of both static and dynamic correlation. We investigate the reliability of the TCC approach with respect to the exact wave function. In addition to the error in the electronic energy and standard coupled c…
In this paper, we analyze the numerical aspects of the inherently multi-reference density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations on top of the periodic Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) using the complete active space (CAS) approach. Following the technical outline related to the computation of the Hamiltonian matrix elements and to the construction of the active space, we illustrate the potential of the framework by studying the vertical many-body energy spectrum of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nano-flakes embedding a single boron vacancy point defect with prominent multi-r…
The theoretical understanding of emergent phenomena in quantum materials is one of the greatest challenges in condensed matter physics. In contrast to simple materials such as noble metals and semiconductors, macroscopic properties of quantum materials cannot be predicted by the properties of individual electrons. One of the examples of scientific importance is strongly correlated electron system. Neither localized nor itinerant behaviors of electrons in partially filled 3d, 4f, and 5f orbitals give rise to rich physics such as Mott insulators, high-temperature superconductors, and superior th…
Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) is a successful method to compute the electronic structure of strongly correlated materials, especially when it is combined with density functional theory (DFT). Here, we present an open-source computational package (and a library) combining DMFT with various DFT codes interfaced through the Wannier90 package. The correlated subspace is expanded as a linear combination of Wannier functions introduced in the DMFT approach as local orbitals. In particular, we provide a library mode for computing the DMFT density matrix. This library can be linked and then inter…
Two-dimensional spin-orbital magnets with strong exchange frustration have recently been predicted to facilitate the realization of a quantum critical point in the Gross-Neveu-SO(3) universality class. In contrast to previously known Gross-Neveu-type universality classes, this quantum critical point separates a Dirac semimetal and a long-range-ordered phase, in which the fermion spectrum is only partially gapped out. Here, we characterize the quantum critical behavior of the Gross-Neveu-SO(3) universality class by employing three complementary field-theoretical techniques beyond their leading …
We propose a self-consistent method for electronic structure calculations of correlated systems, which combines the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The LSDA part is based on the exact muffin-tin orbital approach, meanwhile the DMFT uses a perturbation scheme that includes the T matrix with fluctuation exchange approximation. The current LSDA+DMFT implementation fulfills both self-energy and charge self-consistency requirements. We present results on the electronic structure calculations for bulk 3d transition metals (Cr, Fe, and Ni) and for F…
A system of electrons in a local or nonlocal external potential can be studied with 1-matrix functional theory (1MFT), which is similar to density functional theory (DFT) but takes the one-particle reduced density matrix (1-matrix) instead of the density as its basic variable. Within 1MFT, Gilbert derived [PRB 12, 2111 (1975)] effective single-particle equations analogous to the Kohn-Sham (KS) equations in DFT. The self-consistent solution of these 1MFT-KS equations reproduces not only the density of the original electron system but also its 1-matrix. While in DFT it is usually possible to rep…
We present an accurate implementation of total energy calculations into the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) method. The electronic structure problem is solved through the full potential linear Muffin-Tin Orbital (FP-LMTO) and Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (FP-KKR) methods with a perturbative solver for the effective impurity suitable for moderately correlated systems. We have tested the method in detail for the case of Ni and investigated the sensitivity of the results to the computational scheme and to the complete self-consistency. It is demonstrated that the…
A versatile method for combining density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) is presented. Starting from a general basis-independent formulation, we use Wannier functions as an interface between the two theories. These functions are used for the physical purpose of identifying the correlated orbitals in a specific material, and also for the more technical purpose of interfacing DMFT with different kinds of band-structure methods (with three different techniques being used in the present work). We explore and compare two disti…
