Measuring how the magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin zone evolve in a Mott insulator as charges are introduced dramatically improved our understanding of the pseudogap, non-Fermi liquids and high $T_C$ superconductivity. Recently, photoexcitation has been used to induce similarly exotic states transiently. However, understanding how these states emerge has been limited because of a lack of available probes of magnetic correlations in the time domain, which hinders further investigation of how light can be used to control the properties of solids. Here we implement magnetic resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at a free electron laser, and directly determine the magnetization dynamics after photo-doping the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that the non-equilibrium state 2~ps after the excitation has strongly suppressed long-range magnetic order, but hosts photo-carriers that induce strong, non-thermal magnetic correlations. The magnetism recovers its two-dimensional (2D) in-plane Néel correlations on a timescale of a few ps, while the three-dimensional (3D) long-range magnetic order restores over a far longer, fluence-dependent timescale of a few hundred ps. The dramatic difference in these two timescales, implies that characterizing the dimensionality of magnetic correlations will be vital in our efforts to understand ultrafast magnetic dynamics.
Distinguishing and controlling the extent of Mottness is important for materials where the energy scales of the onsite Coulomb repulsion U and the bandwidth W are comparable. Here we report the ultrafast electronic dynamics of 1T-TaS$_2$ by ultrafast time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A comparison of the electron dynamics for the newly-discovered intermediate phase (I-phase) as well as the low-temperature commensurate charge density wave (C-CDW) phase shows distinctive dynamics. While the I-phase is characterized by an instantaneous response and nearly time-resolution-limited…
We report strong instantaneous photoinduced absorption (PA) in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator ${\rm Sr_2CuO_3}$ in the IR spectral region. The observed PA is to an even-parity two-photon state that occurs immediately above the absorption edge. Theoretical calculations based on a two-band extended Hubbard model explains the experimental features and indicates that the strong two-photon absorption is due to a very large dipole-coupling between nearly degenerate one- and two-photon states. Room temperature picosecond recovery of the optical transparency suggests the strong potential of …
We use inhomogeneous nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory to investigate the spreading of photo-excited carriers in Mott insulating heterostructures with strong internal fields. Antiferromagnetic correlations are found to affect the carrier dynamics in a crucial manner: An antiferromagnetic spin background can absorb energy from photo-excited carriers on an ultrafast timescale, thus enabling fast transport between different layers and the separation of electron and hole-like carriers, whereas in the paramagnetic state, carriers become localized in strong fields. This interplay between ch…
A1-xFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Cs, Rb, Tl) are recently discovered iron-based superconductors with critical temperatures (Tc) ranging up to 32 K. Their parent phases have unique properties when compared with other iron-based superconductors; e.g., their crystal structures include ordered Fe vacancies, their normal states are antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating phases, and they have extremely high Néel transition temperatures. However, control of carrier doping into the parent AFM insulators has been difficult due to their intrinsic phase separation. Here, we fabricated an Fe-vacancy-ordered TlFe1.6Se2 in…
The bad-metal behavior of the iron pnictides has motivated a theoretical description in terms of a proximity to Mott localization. Since the parent compounds of the iron pnictides contain an even number of 3d-electrons per Fe, it is important to determine whether a Mott transition robustly exists and the nature of the possible Mott insulating phases. We address these issues in a minimal two-orbital model and a more realistic four-orbital model for the parent iron pnictides using a slave-spin approach. In the two-orbital model with two electrons per Fe, we identify a transition from metal to Mo…
We present a calculation of the recombination rate of the excited holon-doublon pairs based on the two-dimensional model relevant for undoped cuprates which shows that fast processes, observed in pump-probe experiments on Mott-Hubbard insulators in picosecond range, can be explained even quantitatively with the multi-magnon emission. The precondition is the existence of the Mott-Hubbard bound exciton of the s-type. We find that its decay is exponentially dependent on the Mott-Hubbard gap and on the magnon energy, with a small prefactor which can be traced back to strong correlations and conseq…
Time-resolved soft-X-ray photoemission spectroscopy is used to simultaneously measure the ultrafast dynamics of core-level spectral functions and excited states upon excitation of excitons in WSe$_2$. We present a many-body approximation for the Green's function, which excellently describes the transient core-hole spectral function. The relative dynamics of excited-state signal and core levels reveals a delayed core-hole renormalization due to screening by excited quasi-free carriers, revealing an excitonic Mott transition. These findings establish time-resolved core-level photoelectron spectr…
Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy with high temporal and spectral resolutions provides new insight into ultrafast nonequilibrium phenomena. We propose that transient interference between pump and probe pulses is realized in pump-probe spectroscopy of band and Mott insulators, which can be observed only after recent developments of ultrafast spectroscopic techniques. A continuum structure in the excitation spectrum of band insulators is found to act as a medium for storing the spectral information of the pump pulse, and the spectrum detected by the probe pulse is interfered with by the medium, …
We present an anti-ferromagnetically ordered ground state of Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ based on density-functional-theory calculations including both spin-orbit coupling and on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. We show that the splitting of $e_{g}'$ doublet states by the strong spin-orbit coupling is mainly responsible for the intriguing nature of its insulating gap and magnetic ground state. Due to its proximity to the spin-orbit insulator phase, the magnetic ordering as obtained with finite $U$ is found to exhibit a strong in-plane anisotropy. The phase diagram of Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ suggests a possible i…
We investigate how fast and how effective photocarrier excitation can modify the exchange interaction $J_\mathrm{ex}$ in the prototype Mott-Hubbard insulator. We demonstrate an ultrafast quenching of $J_\mathrm{ex}$ both by evaluating exchange integrals from a time-dependent response formalism and by explicitly simulating laser-induced spin precession in an antiferromagnet that is canted by an external magnetic field. In both cases, the electron dynamics is obtained from nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. We find that the modified $J_\mathrm{ex}$ emerges already within a few electron …
We report the results of electrical and magnetic properties on two new compounds, K0.8Fe1.7S2 and K0.8Fe1.7SeS, both having similar structures to newly discovered superconducting K0.8Fe1.7Se2. K0.8Fe1.7S2 exhibits a semiconductor-like electrical property and undergoes an anti-ferromagnetic transition at about 260 K. Upon replacing half of S with Se, K0.8Fe1.7SSe becomes a superconductor at 25 K, implying the superconductivity evolves from a Mott AFM state in Fe-Se based superconductors.
The bad metal behavior in the normal state of the iron-based superconductors suggests an intimate connection between the superconductivity and a proximity to a Mott transition. At the same time, there is strong evidence for the multi-orbital nature of the electronic excitations. It is then important to understand the orbital-dependent effects of electron correlations. In this paper we review the recent theoretical progresses on the metal-to-insulator transition in multiorbital models for the iron-based superconductors. These include studies of models that contain at least the 3d xy and 3d xz/y…
The strongest interaction between microscopic spins in magnetic materials is the exchange interaction $J_\text{ex}$. Therefore, ultrafast control of $J_\text{ex}$ holds the promise to control spins on ultimately fast timescales. We demonstrate that time-periodic modulation of the electronic structure by electric fields can be used to reversibly control $J_\text{ex}$ on ultrafast timescales in extended antiferromagnetic Mott insulators. In the regime of weak driving strength, we find that $J_\text{ex}$ can be enhanced and reduced for frequencies below and above the Mott gap, respectively. Moreo…
Iron-based superconductivity develops near an antiferromagnetic order and out of a bad metal normal state, which has been interpreted as originating from a proximate Mott transition. Whether an actual Mott insulator can be realized in the phase diagram of the iron pnictides remains an open question. Here we use transport, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and neutron scattering to demonstrate that NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As near $x\approx 0.5$ exhibits real space Fe and Cu ordering, and are antiferromagnetic insulators with the insulating behavior persisting above the …
Protected by the interplay of on-site Coulomb interactions and spin-orbit coupling, Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ at high pressure is a rare example of a Mott insulator with a paramagnetic ground state. Here, using optical Raman scattering, we measure both the phonon and magnon evolution in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ under pressure, and identify three different magnetically-ordered phases, culminating in a spin-disordered state beyond 18 GPa. A strong first-order structural phase transition drives the magnetic evolution at $\sim$10 GPa with reduced structural anisotropy in the IrO$_6$ cages, leading to increasingly isotro…
A charge excitation in a two-dimensional Mott insulator is strongly coupled with the surrounding spins, which is observed as magnetic-polaron formations of doped carriers and a magnon sideband in the Mott-gap transition spectrum. However, the dynamics related to the spin sector are difficult to measure. Here, we show that pump-probe reflection spectroscopy with 7-fs laser pulses can detect the optically induced spin dynamics in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$, a cuprate Mott insulator. The bleaching signal at the Mott-gap transition is enhanced at $\sim$18 fs, which corresponds to the spin-relaxation time in ma…
We study the photoinduced ultrafast dynamics in relativistic Mott insulators, i.e., Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling. For this purpose, we consider a minimal one-band Hubbard model on lattices with square and triangular symmetries, as relevant for layered transition metal compounds such as Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Depending on the lattice and the spin-orbit coupling, the systems have canted antiferromagnetic or $120^\circ$ order. They are excited by simulating a short laser pulse, and the dynamics is solved using nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. The pulse generates hot carriers…
The ultrafast response of the prototype Mott-Hubbard system (V1-xCrx)2O3 was systematically studied with fs pump-probe reflectivity, allowing us to clearly identify the effects of the metal-insulator transition on the transient response. The isostructural nature of the phase transition in this material made it possible to follow across the phase diagram the behaviour of the detected coherent acoustic wave, whose average value and lifetime depend on the thermodynamic phase and on the correlated electron density of states. It is also shown how coherent lattice oscillations can play an important …
We predict that iron-based superconductors discovered near d6 configuration (5 Fe 3d orbitals filled by 6 electrons) is located on the foot of an unexpectedly large dome of correlated electron matter centered at the Mott insulator at d5 (namely, half filling). This is based on the many-variable variational Monte-Carlo results for ab initio low-energy models derived by the downfolding. The d5 Mott proximity extends to subsequent emergence of incoherent metals, orbital differentiations due to the Mott physics and Hund's-rule coupling, followed by antiferromagnetic quantum criticality, in quantit…
Many of the iron pnictides have strongly anisotropic normal-state characteristics, important for the exotic magnetic and superconducting behavior these materials exhibit. Yet, the origin of the observed anisotropy is unclear. Electronically driven nematicity has been suggested, but distinguishing this as an independent degree of freedom from magnetic and structural orders is difficult, as these couple together to break the same tetragonal symmetry. Here we use time-resolved polarimetry to reveal critical nematic fluctuations in unstrained Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)_2As_2. The femtosecond anisotropic res…
Interactions between particles in quantum many-body systems play a crucial role in determining the electric, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties of the system. The recent progress in the laser-pulse technique has enabled the manipulations and measurements of physical properties on ultrafast timescales. Here, we propose a method for the direct and ultrafast probing of quantum many-body interaction through coherent two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy. Up to a moderate interaction strength, the inter-particle interaction manifests itself in the emergence of off-diagonal peaks in the 2D spectr…
An SDW antiferromagnetic (SDW-AF) low temperature phase transition is generally observe and the AF spin fluctuations are considered to play an important role for the superconductivity paring mechanism in FeAs superconductors. However, a similar magnetic phase transition is not observed in FeSe superconductors, which has caused considerable discussion. We report on the intrinsic electronic states of FeSe as elucidated by transport measurements under magnetic fields using a high quality single crystal. A mobility spectrum analysis, an ab initio method that does not make assumptions on the transp…
Multiorbital correlated materials are often on the verge of multiple electronic phases (metallic, insulating, super- conducting, charge and orbitally ordered), which can be explored and controlled by small changes of the external parameters. The use of ultrashort light pulses as a mean to transiently modify the band population is leading to fundamentally new results. In this paper we will review recent advances in the field and we will discuss the pos- sibility of manipulating the orbital polarization in correlated multi-band solid state systems. This technique can provide new understanding of…
The degree of electron correlations remains a central issue in the iron-based superconductors. The parent iron pnictides are antiferromagnetic, and their bad-metal behavior has been interpreted in terms of proximity to a Mott transition. We study such a transition in multi-orbital models on modulated lattices containing an ordered pattern of iron vacancies, using a slave-rotor method. We show that the ordered vacancies lead to a band-narrowing, which pushes the system to the Mott insulator side. This effect is proposed to underlie the insulating behavior observed in the parent compounds of the…
A new compound with a quasi-two-dimensional array of FeSe3O tetrahedra and an orthorombic structure, namely BaFe2Se2O, has been successfully fabricated. Experimental results show that this compound is an insulator and has an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at 240 K. Band structure calculation reveals the narrowing of Fe 3d bands near the Fermi energy, which leads to the localization of magnetism and the Mott insulating behavior. The large distances between the Fe atoms perhaps are responsible for the characters. Linear response calculation further indicates a strong in-plane AF exchange $J$,…
Femtosecond time-resolved core-level photoemission spectroscopy with a free-electron laser is used to measure the atomic-site specific charge-order dynamics in the charge-density-wave/Mott insulator 1T-TaS2. After strong photoexcitation, a prompt loss of charge order and subsequent fast equilibration dynamics of the electron-lattice system are observed. On the time scale of electron-phonon thermalization, about 1 ps, the system is driven across a phase transition from a long-range charge ordered state to a quasi-equilibrium state with domain-like short-range charge and lattice order. The exper…
The infrared transmission measurement was performed for a two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling induced Mott insulator Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ with a layered-perovskite structure. A phonon-assisted magnon mode was observed at around 1870 cm$^{-1}$ in the absorption spectrum below 180 K. The nearest-neighbor superexchange interaction $J$ was estimated to be 57 meV, which is about a half of the $J$ value of a copper oxide La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$. Our results indicate the possibility that nontrivial properties such as superconductivity are realized at rather high temperature in iridium oxides.
Despite many efforts to rationalize the strongly correlated electronic ground states in doped Mott insulators, the nature of the doping induced insulator to metal transition is still a subject under intensive investigation. Here we probe the nanoscale electronic structure of the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_{4-δ}$ with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and find enhanced local density of states (LDOS) inside the Mott gap at the location of individual apical oxygen site defects. We visualize paths of enhanced conductance arising from the overlapping of defect states which induces finite…
Nonlinear phononics holds the promise for controlling properties of quantum materials on the ultrashort timescale. Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory, we solve a model for the description of organic solids, where correlated electrons couple nonlinearly to a quantum phonon mode. Unlike previous works, we exactly diagonalize the local phonon mode within the noncrossing approximation to include the full phononic fluctuations. By exciting the local phonon in a broad range of frequencies near resonance with an ultrashort pulse, we show it is possible to induce a Mott insulator-to-meta…
In high temperature cuprate superconductors, it is now generally agreed that the parent compound is a Mott insulator and superconductivity is realized by doping the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. In the iron-based superconductors, however, the parent compound is mostly antiferromagnetic metal, raising a debate on whether an appropriate starting point should go with an itinerant picture or a localized picture. It has been proposed theoretically that the parent compound of the iron-based superconductors may be on the verge of a Mott insulator, but so far no clear experimental evidence of dopi…
We have observed the characteristic temperature dependence of the intermolecular phonon spectrum in the organic dimer Mott insulator kappa-(ET)2Cu2(CN)3 exhibiting a dielectric anomaly at 30 K. The anomalous spectral narrowing of the 55 cm-1 phonon peak at 30 K was analyzed in terms of motional narrowing within the framework of a stationary Gaussian process, i. e., the phonon frequency is modulated by the ultrafast charge fluctuation. The spectral narrowing occurs because the time constant of the correlation time tau_c and the amplitude of the frequency modulation delta satisfy the relation ta…
We use a three-pulse ultrafast optical spectroscopy to study the relaxation processes in a frustrated Mott insulator Na$_2$IrO$_3$. By being able to independently produce the out-of-equilibrium bound states (excitons) of doublons and holons with the first pulse and suppress the underlying antiferromagnetic order with the second one, we were able to elucidate the relaxation mechanism of quasiparticles in this system. By observing the difference in the exciton dynamics in the magnetically ordered and disordered phases we found that the mass of this quasiparticle is mostly determined by its inter…
Manipulating spin fluctuations with ultrafast laser pulses is a promising route to dynamically control collective phenomena in strongly correlated materials. However, understanding how photoexcited spin degrees of freedom evolve at a microscopic level requires a momentum- and energy-resolved characterization of their nonequilibrium dynamics. Here, we study the photoinduced dynamics of finite-momentum spin excitations in two-dimensional Mott insulators on a square lattice. By calculating the time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering cross-section, we show that an ultrafast pump above th…
To examine the insulating mechanism of 5$d$ transition metal oxide Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, we study the ground state properties of a three-orbital Hubbard model with a large relativistic spin-orbit coupling on a square lattice. Using a variational Monte Carlo method, we find that the insulating state appearing in the ground state phase diagram for one hole per site varies from a weakly correlated to a strongly correlated antiferromagnetic (AF) state with increasing Coulomb interactions. This crossover is characterized by the different energy gain mechanisms of the AF insulating state, i.e., from an int…
We have investigated the excitation spectra of $j_{eff}$=$\frac{1}{2}$ Mott insulator Na$_2$IrO$_3$. Taking into account a relativistic multiplet structure of Ir ions, we have calculated the optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra, which manifest different features from those of a canonical $j_{eff}$=$\frac{1}{2}$ system Sr$_2$IrO$_4$.Distinctly from the two-peak structure in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, $σ(ω)$ in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ has a broad single peak dominated by interband transitions from $j_{eff}$=$\frac{3}{2}$ to $\frac{1}{2}$. RIXS spectra exhibit the spin-orb…
We present scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy experiments on the novel J_eff = 1/2 Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. Local density of states (LDOS) measurements show an intrinsic insulating gap of 620 meV that is asymmetric about the Fermi level and is larger than previously reported values. The size of this gap suggests that Sr2IrO4 is likely a Mott rather than Slater insulator. In addition, we found a small number of native defects which create in-gap spectral weight. Atomically resolved LDOS measurements on and off the defects shows that this energy gap is quite fragile. Together the exte…
The recent detailed study of quasi-one-dimensional iron-based ladders, with the $3d$ iron electronic density $n = 6$, has unveiled surprises, such as orbital-selective phases. However, similar studies for $n=6$ iron chains are still rare. Here, a three-orbital electronic Hubbard model was constructed to study the magnetic and electronic properties of the quasi-one-dimensional $n=6$ iron chain Ce$_2$O$_2$FeSe$_2$, with focus on the effect of doping. Specifically, introducing the Hubbard $U$ and Hund $J_{H}$ couplings and studying the model via the density matrix renormalization group, we report…
The study of photoexcited strongly correlated materials is attracting growing interest since their rich phase diagram often translates into an equally rich out-of-equilibrium behavior, including non-thermal phases and photoinduced phase transitions. With femtosecond optical pulses, electronic and lattice degrees of freedom can be transiently decoupled, giving the opportunity of stabilizing new states of matter inaccessible by quasi-adiabatic pathways. Here we present a study of the ultrafast non-equilibrium evolution of the prototype Mott-Hubbard material V2O3, which presents a transient non-t…
Employing time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we analyze the relaxation dynamics of hot electrons in the charge density wave / Mott material 1T-TaS_2. At 1.2 eV above the Fermi level we observe a hot electron lifetime of 12 +- 5 fs in the metallic state and of 60 +- 10 fs in the broken symmetry ground state - a direct consequence of the reduced phase space for electron-electron scattering determined by the Mott gap. Boltzmann equation calculations which account for the interaction of hot electrons in a Bloch band with a doublon-holon excitation in the Mott state provide insight into the u…
We report a high-field electron spin resonance study in the sub-THz frequency domain of a single crystal of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ that has been recently proposed as a prototypical spin-orbital Mott insulator. In the antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered state with noncollinear spin structure that occurs in this material at $T_{\rm N} \approx 240$ K we observe both the "low" frequency mode due to the precession of weak ferromagnetic moments arising from a spin canting, and the "high" frequency modes due to the precession of the AFM sublattices. Surprisingly, the energy gap for the AFM excitations appears…
Superconductivity in underdoped cuprates emerges from an unusual electronic state characterised by nodal quasiparticles and an antinodal pseudogap. The relation between this state and superconductivity is intensely studied but remains controversial. The discrimination between competing theoretical models is hindered by a lack of electronic structure data from related doped Mott insulators. Here we report the doping evolution of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, a close analogue to underdoped cuprates. We demonstrate that metallicity emerges from a rapid collapse of the Mott gap wit…

Electric field effect (EFE) controlled magnetoelectric transport in thin films of undoped and La-doped Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ (SIO) were investigated under the action of ionic liquid gating. Despite large carrier density modulation, the temperature dependent resistance measurements exhibit insulating behavior in chemically and EFE doped samples with the band filling up to 10\%. The ambipolar transport across the Mott gap is demonstrated by EFE tuning of the activation energy. Further, we observe a crossover from a negative magnetoresistance (MR) at high temperatures to positive MR at low temperatur…
In a honeycomb-lattice spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator α-RuCl3, an ultrafast magnetization is induced by circularly polarized excitation below the Mott gap. Photo-carriers play an important role, which are generated by turning down the synergy of the on-site Coulomb interaction and the spin-orbit interaction realizing the insulator state. An ultrafast 6- fs measurement of photo-carrier dynamics and a quantum mechanical analysis clarify the mechanism, according to which the magnetization emerges from a coherent charge motion between different t2g orbitals (dyz-dxz-dxy) of Ru3+ ions. This ult…
We study the controlled manipulation of the Jahn-Teller metal state of fulleride compounds using nonequilibrium dynamical mean field theory. This anomalous metallic state is a spontaneous orbital-selective Mott phase, which is characterized by one metallic and two insulating orbitals. Using protocols based on transiently reduced hopping amplitudes or periodic electric fields, we demonstrate the possibility to switch orbitals between Mott insulating and metallic on a sub-picosecond timescale, and to rotate the order parameter between three equivalent states that can be distinguished by their an…
The motion of doped electrons or holes in an antiferromagnetic lattice with strong on-site Coulomb interactions touches one of the most fundamental open problems in contemporary condensed matter physics. The doped charge may strongly couple to elementary spin excitations resulting in a dressed quasiparticle which is subject to confinement. This 'spin-polaron' possesses internal degrees of freedom with a characteristic 'ladder' excitation spectrum. Despite its fundamental importance for understanding high-temperature superconductivity, clear experimental spectroscopic signatures of these intern…
Most available theories for correlated electron transport are based on the Hubbard Hamiltonian. In this effective theory, renormalized hopping and interaction parameters only implicitly incorporate the coupling of correlated charge carriers to microscopic degrees of freedom. Unfortunately, no spectroscopy can individually probe such renormalizations, limiting the applicability of Hubbard models. We show here that the role of each individual degree of freedom can be made explicit by using a new experimental technique, which we term 'quantum modulation spectroscopy' and we demonstrate here in th…
The nearly free electron metal next to a localized Mott insulating state has been recently proposed as a way to probe Kondo lattice physics and to gain insight into how the two extremes of localized and delocalized electron states interact (Sunko, et al, Science advances 6, 2020). Although high harmonic generation has been used extensively to investigate the gas phase, its extension to solids is relatively recent, and has not yet been applied to interfaces. Here, we investigate the field-induced dielectric break-down at the Mott-insulator/metal interface using high harmonic generation, emitted…
Nematic fluctuations occur in a wide range of physical systems from liquid crystals to biological molecules to solids such as exotic magnets, cuprates and iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors. Nematic fluctuations are thought to be closely linked to the formation of Cooper-pairs in iron-based superconductors. It is unclear whether the anisotropy inherent in this nematicity arises from electronic spin or orbital degrees of freedom. We have studied the iron-based Mott insulators La$_{2}$O$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O$M$$_{2}$ $M$ = (S, Se) which are structurally similar to the iron pnictide superconductors. …
We have investigated the temperature evolution of magnetism and its interrelation with structural parameters in perovskite-based layered compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which is believed to be a $J_{eff}$ = 1/2 Mott insulator. The structural distortion plays an important role in this material which induces a weak ferromagnetism in otherwise antiferromagnetically ordered magnetic state with transition temperature around 240 K. Interestingly, at low temperature below around 100 K, a change in magnetic moment has been observed. Temperature dependent x-ray diffraction measurements show sudden changes in s…
The role of Coulomb correlations in the iron pnictide LaFeAsO is studied by generalizing exact diagonalization dynamical mean field theory to five orbitals. For rotationally invariant Hund's rule coupling a continuous transition from a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid phase to a non-Fermi-liquid metallic phase exhibiting frozen moments is found at moderate Coulomb energies. For Ising-like exchange, this transition is first order and occurs at a lower critical Coulomb energy. The correlation-induced scattering rate as a function of doping relative to half-filling, i.e., delta = n/5-1, where n=6 for th…
A Dirac fermion emerges as a result of interplay between symmetry and topology in condensed matter. Current research moves towards investigating the Dirac fermions in the presence of manybody effects in correlated system. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of correlation-induced symmetry-protected Dirac semimetal state in the lightly-doped spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that the nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry stabilizes a Dirac line-node semimetal and that the correlation-induced symmetry-breaking electronic order further leads to a phase transition from the Dirac…
We perform a combined experimental-theoretical study of the Fe-oxychalcogenides (FeO$\emph{Ch}$) series La$_{2}$O$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O\emph{M}$_{2}$ (\emph{M}=S, Se), which is the latest among the Fe-based materials with the potential \ to show unconventional high-T$_{c}$ superconductivity (HTSC). A combination of incoherent Hubbard features in X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra, as well as resitivity data, reveal that the parent FeO$\emph{Ch}$ are correlation-driven insulators. To uncover microscopics underlying these findings, we perform local density app…
In this paper, we report on scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements on iron doped 1$T$-Ta$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$S$_2$. A novel domain structure composed of the domains with localized nature divided by the walls is observed in Ta$_{0.99}$Fe$_{0.01}$S$_2$, where the Mott transition is completely suppressed. This indicates that the melting of the Mott state accompanies the appearance of the domain structure. Since the number of walls increase in superconducting Ta$_{0.98}$Fe$_{0.02}$S$_2$, the domain walls seem to be responsible for superconductivity in iron doped 1$T$-TaS$_2…
Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ has often been described via a simple, one-band pseudo-spin 1/2 model, subject to electron-electron interactions, on a square lattice, fostering analogies with cuprate superconductors, believed to be well described by a similar model. In this work we argue - based on a detailed study of the low-energy electronic structure by circularly polarized spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with dynamical mean-field theory calculations - that a pseudo-spin 1/2 model fails to capture the full complexity of the system. We show instead that a realistic multi-band H…
