We explore extended B-splines as a stable basis for isogeometric analysis with trimmed parameter spaces. The stabilization is accomplished by an appropriate substitution of B-splines that may lead to ill-conditioned system matrices. The construction for non-uniform knot vectors is presented. The properties of extended B-splines are examined in the context of interpolation, potential, and linear elasticity problems and excellent results are attained. The analysis is performed by an isogeometric boundary element formulation using collocation. It is argued that extended B-splines provide a flexible and simple stabilization scheme which ideally suits the isogeometric paradigm.
The isogeometric approximation of the Stokes problem in a trimmed domain is studied. This setting is characterized by an underlying mesh unfitted with the boundary of the physical domain making the imposition of the essential boundary conditions a challenging problem. A very popular strategy is to rely on the so-called Nitsche method \cite{MR3264337}. We show that the Nitsche method lacks stability in some degenerate trimmed domain configurations, potentially polluting the computed solutions. After extending the stabilization procedure of \cite{MR4155233} to incompressible flow problems, we sh…
Trimming consists of cutting away parts of a geometric domain, without reconstructing a global parametrization (meshing). It is a widely used operation in computer aided design, which generates meshes that are unfitted with the described physical object. This paper develops an adaptive mesh refinement strategy on trimmed geometries in the context of hierarchical B-spline based isogeometric analysis. A residual a posteriori estimator of the energy norm of the numerical approximation error is derived, in the context of the Poisson equation. The estimator is proven to be reliable, independently o…
The focus of this work is on the development of an error-driven isogeometric framework, capable of automatically performing an adaptive simulation in the context of second- and fourth-order, elliptic partial differential equations defined on two-dimensional trimmed domains. The method is steered by an a posteriori error estimator, which is computed with the aid of an auxiliary residual-like problem formulated onto a space spanned by splines with single element support. The local refinement of the basis is achieved thanks to the use of truncated hierarchical B-splines. We prove numerically the …
Trimming is a common operation in CAD, and, in its simplest formulation, consists in removing superfluous parts from a geometric entity described via splines (a spline patch). After trimming the geometric description of the patch remains unchanged, but the underlying mesh is unfitted with the physical object. We discuss the main problems arising when solving elliptic PDEs on a trimmed domain. First we prove that, even when Dirichlet boundary conditions are weakly enforced using Nitsche's method, the resulting method suffers lack of stability. Then, we develop novel stabilization techniques bas…
Penalty methods have proven to be particularly effective for achieving the required $C^1$-continuity in the context of multi-patch isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shells. Due to their conceptual simplicity, these algorithms are readily applicable to the displacement and rotational coupling of trimmed, non-conforming surfaces. However, the accuracy of the resulting solution depends heavily on the choice of penalty parameters. Furthermore, the selection of these coefficients is generally problem-dependent and is based on a heuristic approach. Moreover, developing a penalty-like procedure that avoids…
Inspired by the introduction of Volumetric Modeling via volumetric representations (V-reps) by Massarwi and Elber in 2016, in this paper we present a novel approach for the construction of isogeometric numerical methods for elliptic PDEs on trimmed geometries, seen as a special class of more general V-reps. We develop tools for approximation and local re-parametrization of trimmed elements for three dimensional problems, and we provide a theoretical framework that fully justify our algorithmic choices. We validate our approach both on two and three dimensional problems, for diffusion and linea…
We present a novel method for isogeometric analysis (IGA) to directly work on geometries constructed by Boolean operations including difference (i.e., trimming), union and intersection. Particularly, this work focuses on the union operation, which involves multiple independent, generally non-conforming and trimmed spline patches. Given a series of patches, we overlay one on top of another in a certain order. While the invisible part of each patch is trimmed away, the visible parts of all the patches constitute the entire computational domain. We employ the Nitsche's method to weakly couple ind…
We develop a discrete extension operator for trimmed spline spaces consisting of piecewise polynomial functions of degree $p$ with $k$ continuous derivatives. The construction is based on polynomial extension from neighboring elements together with projection back into the spline space. We prove stability and approximation results for the extension operator. Finally, we illustrate how we can use the extension operator to construct a stable cut isogeometric method for an elliptic model problem.
Adaptive isogeometric methods for the solution of partial differential equations rely on the construction of locally refinable spline spaces. A simple and efficient way to obtain these spaces is to apply the multi-level construction of hierarchical splines, that can be used on single-patch domains or in multi-patch domains with $C^0$ continuity across the patch interfaces. Due to the benefits of higher continuity in isogeometric methods, recent works investigated the construction of spline spaces with global $C^1$ continuity on two or more patches. In this paper, we show how these approaches c…
Adaptive isogeometric phase-field modeling of the Cahn-Hilliard equation: Suitably graded hierarchical refinement and coarsening on multi-patch geometries
In this paper we apply the INTERNODES method to solve second order elliptic problems discretized by Isogeometric Analysis methods on non-conforming multiple patches in 2D and 3D geometries. INTERNODES is an interpolation-based method that, on each interface of the configuration, exploits two independent interpolation operators to enforce the continuity of the traces and of the normal derivatives. INTERNODES supports non-conformity on NURBS spaces as well as on geometries. We specify how to set up the interpolation matrices on non-conforming interfaces, how to enforce the continuity of the norm…
This work develops a numerical solver based on the combination of isogeometric analysis (IGA) and the tensor train (TT) decomposition for the approximation of partial differential equations (PDEs) on parameter-dependent geometries. First, the discrete Galerkin operator as well as the solution for a fixed geometry configuration are represented as tensors and the TT format is employed to reduce their computational complexity. Parametric dependencies are included by considering the parameters that control the geometry configuration as additional dimensions next to the physical space coordinates. …

The design of globally $C^s$-smooth ($s \geq 1$) isogeometric spline spaces over multi-patch geometries is a current and challenging topic of research in the framework of isogeometric analysis. In this work, we extend the recent methods [25,28] and [31-33] for the construction of $C^1$-smooth and $C^2$-smooth isogeometric spline spaces over particular planar multi-patch geometries to the case of $C^s$-smooth isogeometric multi-patch spline spaces of an arbitrary selected smoothness $s \geq 1$. More precisely, for any $s \geq 1$, we study the space of $C^s$-smooth isogeometric spline functions …
Isogeometric analysis is a powerful paradigm which exploits the high smoothness of splines for the numerical solution of high order partial differential equations. However, the tensor-product structure of standard multivariate B-spline models is not well suited for the representation of complex geometries, and to maintain high continuity on general domains special constructions on multi-patch geometries must be used. In this paper we focus on adaptive isogeometric methods with hierarchical splines, and extend the construction of $C^1$ isogeometric spline spaces on multi-patch planar domains to…
3D objects, modeled using Computer Aided Geometric Design tools, are traditionally represented using a boundary representation (B-rep), and typically use spline functions to parameterize these boundary surfaces. However, recent development in physical analysis, in isogeometric analysis (IGA) in specific, necessitates a volumetric parametrization of the interior of the object. IGA is performed directly by integrating over the spline spaces of the volumetric spline representation of the object. Typically, tensor-product B-spline trivariates are used to parameterize the volumetric domain. A gener…
In this paper, we develop and study approximately smooth basis constructions for isogeometric analysis over two-patch domains. One key element of isogeometric analysis is that it allows high order smoothness within one patch. However, for representing complex geometries, a multi-patch construction is needed. In this case, a $C^0$-smooth basis is easy to obtain, whereas $C^1$-smooth isogeometric functions require a special construction. Such spaces are of interest when solving numerically fourth-order PDE problems, such as the biharmonic equation and the Kirchhoff-Love plate or shell formulatio…
We define a conforming B-spline discretisation of the de Rham complex on multipatch geometries. We introduce and analyse the properties of interpolation operators onto these spaces which commute w.r.t. the surface differential operators. Using these results as a basis, we derive new convergence results of optimal order w.r.t. the respective energy spaces and provide approximation properties of the spline discretisations of trace spaces for application in the theory of isogeometric boundary element methods. Our analysis allows for a straightforward generalisation to finite element methods.

We introduce manifold-based basis functions for isogeometric analysis of surfaces with arbitrary smoothness, prescribed $C^0$ continuous creases and boundaries. The utility of the manifold-based surface construction techniques in isogeometric analysis was demonstrated in Majeed and Cirak (CMAME, 2017). The respective basis functions are derived by combining differential-geometric manifold techniques with conformal parametrisations and the partition of unity method. The connectivity of a given unstructured quadrilateral control mesh in $\mathbb R^3$ is used to define a set of overlapping charts…
Multi-material problems often exhibit complex geometries along with physical responses presenting large spatial gradients or discontinuities. In these cases, providing high-quality body-fitted finite element analysis meshes and obtaining accurate solutions remain challenging. Immersed boundary techniques provide elegant solutions for such problems. Enrichment methods alleviate the need for generating conforming analysis grids by capturing discontinuities within mesh elements. Additionally, increased accuracy of physical responses and geometry description can be achieved with higher-order appro…
This paper presents an immersed, isogeometric finite element framework to predict the response of multi-material, multi-physics problems with complex geometries using locally refined discretizations. To circumvent the need to generate conformal meshes, this work uses an eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) to discretize the governing equations on non-conforming, embedding meshes. A flexible approach to create truncated hierarchical B-splines discretizations is presented. This approach enables the refinement of each state variable field individually to meet field-specific accuracy requirements…

Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) is a computational technique for the numerical approximation of partial differential equations (PDEs). This technique is based on the use of spline-type basis functions, that are able to hold a global smoothness and allow to exactly capture a wide set of common geometries. The current rise of this approach has encouraged the search of fast solvers for isogeometric discretizations and nowadays this topic is full of interest. In this framework, a desired property of the solvers is the robustness with respect to both the polinomial degree $p$ and the mesh size $h$. For…
This contribution investigates the connection between Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) and the Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) method for electrostatic problems. We demonstrate that using the spline-based geometry concepts from IgA allows for extracting circuit elements without a meshing step. Moreover, the proposed IgA-PEEC method converges for complex geometries up to three times faster than the conventional PEEC approach and, in turn, it requires a significantly lower number of degrees of freedom to solve a problem with comparable accuracy. The resulting method is closely related to th…
