The data collected by the LHC collaborations at an energy of 13 TeV indicates the presence of an excess in the diphoton spectrum that would correspond to a resonance of a 750 GeV mass. The apparently large production cross section is nevertheless very difficult to explain in minimal models. We consider the possibility that the resonance is a pseudoscalar boson $A$ with a two--photon decay mediated by a charged and uncolored fermion having a mass at the $\frac12 M_A$ threshold and a very small decay width, $\ll 1$ MeV; one can then generate a large enhancement of the $Aγγ$ amplitude which explains the excess without invoking a large multiplicity of particles propagating in the loop, large electric charges and/or very strong Yukawa couplings. The implications of such a threshold enhancement are discussed in two explicit scenarios: i) the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in which the $A$ state is produced via the top quark mediated gluon fusion process and decays into photons predominantly through loops of charginos with masses close to $\frac12 M_A$ and ii) a two Higgs doublet model in which $A$ is again produced by gluon fusion but decays into photons through loops of vector--like charged heavy leptons. We also comment on a minimal scenario in which the $A$ state couples only to photons through a heavy lepton loop and is both produced and decays through this coupling. In all these scenarios, while the mass of the charged fermion has to be adjusted to be extremely close to half of the $A$ resonance mass, the small total widths are naturally obtained if only suppressed three-body decay channels occur. Finally, the implications of some of these scenarios for dark matter are discussed.
The ATLAS and CMS collaborations discovered a new boson particle. If the new boson is the Higgs boson, the diphoton signal strength is 1.5 - 1.8 times larger than the Standard Model (SM) prediction, while the WW and ZZ signal strengths are in agreement with the SM one. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), overall consistency can be achieved by a light stau and the large left-right mixing of staus. However, a light stau and large left-right mixing of staus may suffer from vacuum instability. We first apply the vacuum meta-stability condition to the Higgs to diphoton decay rate i…
The ATLAS and the CMS collaborations have presented results which show an excess of the Higgs to diphoton decay channel. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), this situation can be achieved by a light stau and a large left-right mixing of the staus. However, this parameter region is severely constrained by vacuum stability. In order to relax the vacuum meta-stability condition, we focus on the parameter region where the mass difference between the two staus is large. This region has not been considered yet. In this paper, we show that staus with a large mass difference can relax…
We investigate a possibility if a loop diagram via Higgsino can enhance the Higgs to diphoton decay width in supersymmetric models with an extension of Higgs sector. A model with an additional non-renormalizable term of Higgs fields is firstly analyzed where the higher order term can introduce the Higgs coupling to Higgsinos as well as charged Higgs bosons. We point out that a choice of the Higgs coupling to obtain a significant size of enhancement of diphoton decay width reduces the Higgs mass and/or a size of non-renormalizable term needs to be large and a cutoff scale is around the weak sca…
We study the implications of the LHC Higgs signals on the Higgs mixing in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM). The Higgs couplings can depart from their values in the standard model (SM) due to mixing effects. However the Higgs signal rate in the WW and ZZ channels can remain close to the SM values, as observed at the LHC, even if the SM-like Higgs boson with a mass near 125 GeV has a large singlet component. This allows to get a sizable enhancement in the Higgs to diphoton rate through the charged-higgsino loop contribution, as well as a sizable reduction of the Higgs to…
Analysis of contributions from vector-like leptonic supermultiplets to the Higgs diphoton decay rate and to the Higgs boson mass is given. Corrections arising from the exchange of the new leptons and their super-partners, as well as their mirrors are computed analytically and numerically. We also study the correlation between the enhanced Higgs diphoton rate and the Higgs mass corrections. Specifically, we find two branches in the numerical analysis: on the lower branch the diphoton rate enhancement is flat while on the upper branch it has a strong correlation with the Higgs mass enhancement. …
The Large Hadron Collider has recently discovered a Higgs-like particle having a mass around 125 GeV and also indicated that there is an enhancement in the Higgs to diphoton decay rate as compared to that in the standard model. We have studied implications of these discoveries in the bilinear R-parity violating supersymmetric model, whose main motivation is to explain the non-zero masses for neutrinos. The R-parity violating parameters in this model are $ε$ and $b_ε$, and these parameters determine the scale of neutrino masses. If the enhancement in the Higgs to diphoton decay rate is true, th…
We show that the low energy effective model derived from SU(5) with 45-plet Higgs can account for the recently reported enhanced diphoton decay rate of the Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs with mass about 125 GeV. This model extends the SM by an extra Higgs doublet and color-octet scalar doublet. We show that the charged octet scalars are not severely constrained by flavor changing neutral current and can be light. However, the K^0-\bar{K}^0 mixing implies that the neutral octet-scalar mass should be larger than 400 GeV for \tanβ~ O(1). The role of charged octet scalar in the loop of Higgs decay…
We discuss a possible explanation of the recently observed diphoton excess at around 750 GeV as seen by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. We calculate the cross section of the diphoton signature in 2-Higgs Doublet Models with the addition of a real isospin scalar multiplet without a vacuum expectation value, where a neutral component of such a representation can be a dark matter candidate. We find that the branching fraction of an additional CP-even Higgs boson $H$ from the doublet fields into the diphoton mode can be significantly enhanced, by up to a factor of $10^3…
We show that supersymmetric "new physics" beyond the MSSM can naturally accommodate a Higgs mass near 126 GeV and enhance the signal rate in the Higgs to diphoton channel, while the signal rates in all the other Higgs decay channels coincide with Standard Model expectations, except possibly the Higgs to Z-photon channel. The "new physics" that corrects the relevant Higgs couplings can be captured by two supersymmetric effective operators. We provide a simple example of an underlying model in which these operators are simultaneously generated. The scale of "new physics" that generates these ope…
We explore the Higgs couplings to gauge bosons in the minimal $SO(5)/SO(4)$ 4D composite Higgs model. The pions scatterings put unitary constraints on the couplings and therefore determine the branch ratios of various Higgs decays. Through fine tuning the parameters, enhancement of Higgs to diphoton rate is possible to be achieved with the existence of vector meson fields.
The newly discovered resonance at 125 GeV has properties consistent with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs particle, although some production and/or decay channels currently exhibit O(1) deviations. We consider scenarios with a new scalar singlet field with couplings to electrically charged vector-like matter, focusing particularly on the case when the singlet mass lies within a narrow ~ few GeV window around the Higgs mass. Such a `singlet neighbor' presents novel mechanisms for modifying the observed properties of the Higgs boson. For instance, even a small amount of the Higgs-singlet mixing can…
Interpreting the diphoton mass excesses near 750~GeV reported by ATLAS and CMS as pseudoscalar gluinonia, bound states of two gluinos, we perform a scan in Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetry parameter space, fixing $m_{\tilde{g}}\approx 380$~GeV and identifying an experimentally viable point. We generate events with this point, perform fast simulation, and carry out an analysis modeled on the ATLAS search which reproduces features of the diphoton excess. This interpretation requires an enhancement of the signal strength above the nominal rate found in the literature and neglecting the gaugino mass …
An improved analysis of the diphoton decay rate of the Higgs boson in the Inert Doublet Model is presented together with critical discussion of the results existing in the literature. For Higgs boson mass M_h equal 125 GeV, and taking into account the following constraints: vacuum stability, existence of the Inert vacuum, perturbative unitarity, electroweak precision tests and the LEP bounds, we found regions in the parameter space where the diphoton rate is enhanced. The resulting regions were confronted with the allowed values of the Dark Matter mass. We found that significant enhancement in…
The new scalar resonance contribution to the 750 GeV diphoton excess observed at the LHC 13 TeV necessarily interferes with the continuum background in the $gg\to γγ$. The interference has two considerable effects: (1) enhancing or suppressing diphoton signal rate due to the imaginary-part interference and (2) distorting resonance shape due to the real-part interference. From the best-fit study of two benchmark models (two Higgs doublets with $\sim$50 GeV widths and a singlet scalar with 5 GeV width, both extended with vector-like fermions), we find that the resonance contribution to the 750 G…
Current Higgs data at the Large Hadron Collider is compatible with a SM signal at the 2$σ$ level, but the central value of the signal strength in the diphoton channel is enhanced with respect to the SM expectation. If the enhancement resides in the diphoton partial decay width, the data could be accommodated in the Minimally Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with highly mixed light staus. We revisit the issue of vacuum instability induced by large mixing in the stau sector, including effects of a radiatively-corrected tau Yukawa coupling. Further, we emphasize the importance of taking into …
We study constraints from perturbativity and vacuum stability as well as the EWPD in the type II seesaw model. As a result, we can put stringent limits on the Higgs triplet couplings depending on the cut-off scale. The EWPD tightly constrain the Higgs triplet mass splitting to be smaller than 40 GeV. Analyzing the Higgs-to-diphoton rate in the allowed parameter region, we show a possible enhancement by up to 100 % and 50 % for the cut-off scale of 100 TeV and $10^{19}$ GeV, respectively, if the doubly charged Higgs boson mass is as low as 100 GeV.
In light of the significant progress of the LHC to determine the properties of the Higgs boson, we investigate the capability of the Manohar-Wise model in explaining the Higgs data. This model extends the SM by one family of color-octet and isospin-doublet scalars, and it can sizably alter the coupling strengths of the Higgs boson with gluons and photons. We first examine the current constraints on the model, which are from unitarity, the LHC searches for the scalars and the electroweak precision data (EWPD).In implementing the unitarity constraint, we use the properties of the SU(3) group to …
The ATLAS and CMS experiments have recently discovered a new 125 GeV scalar boson. We show that the properties of this scalar, including the enhancement of its diphoton decay rate, can be explained in a model with an isospin symmetric Higgs boson. The predictions of the model relevant for future experiments are also discussed.
We discuss a scenario in which the diphoton enhancement at $M_{γγ}$ = 750 GeV, observed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, is a neutral technipion $\tildeπ^0$. We consider two distinct minimal models for the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. In a first one, two-flavor vector-like technicolor (VTC) model, we assume that the two-photon fusion is a dominant production mechanism. We include $γγ\to {\tilde π}^0$ and production of technipion associated with one or two jets. All the considered mechanisms give similar contributions. With the strong Yukawa (technipion-techniquark) coupling $g_…
We discuss whether the enhancement in the diphoton final state at $M_{γγ}$ = 750 GeV, observed recently by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations could be a neutral pseudoscalar technipion $\tildeπ^0$. We considered two distinct minimal models for the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Here we concentrate only on two-flavor vector-like technicolor model and we assume that the two-photon fusion is a dominant production mechanism. We include contributions of $2 \to 1$, $2 \to 2$ and $2 \to 3$ partonic processes. All the mechanisms give similar contributions to the cross section. With the strong …
The Standard Model contains a well-understood, natural, spin-0 diphoton resonance: the $π^0$. Numerous studies have pointed out that the hint of a new diphoton resonance at 750 GeV could be a pion analog, identified with the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of a chiral symmetry spontaneously broken by new strong dynamics at the TeV scale. These "hypercolor" models are generically expected to violate parity through a topological angle $\tildeθ$. We discuss the physics of $\tildeθ$ and its impact on the phenomenology of the new sector. We also describe some of the theoretical implications of a nonze…
The excess of top quark forward-backward asymmetry ($A^t_{FB}$) reported by the Tevatron and the enhancement of the Higgs decay to diphoton observed by the LHC may point to a same origin of new physics. In this note we examined such anomalies in the two-Higgs-doublet model with a color-triplet scalar. We found that under current experimental constraints this model can simultaneously explain both anomalies at $1σ$ level. Also, we examined the Higgs decay $h\to Zγ$ and displayed its correlation with $h\to γγ$. We found that unlike other models, this model predicts a special correlation between $…
The recently observed Higgs like resonance at 125 GeV shows an enhanced rate in the diphoton channel, while being roughly consistent with the standard model expectation for the $WW^*$ and $ZZ^*$ channels. Such an enhancement is possible due to anomalous gauge boson couplings. We explore this feature within a minimal extension of the standard model, where a singlet scalar is introduced which also plays the role of the dark matter candidate. It is argued that such a minimal scenario, without new charged particles, can in principle lead to the desired enhancement of the diphoton rate via the indu…
A large enhancement of a factor of 1.5 - 2 in Higgs production and decay in the diphoton channel, with little deviation in the ZZ channel, can only plausibly arise from a loop of new charged particles with large couplings to the Higgs. We show that, allowing only new fermions with marginal interactions at the weak scale, the required Yukawa couplings for a factor of 2 enhancement are so large that the Higgs quartic coupling is pushed to large negative values in the UV, triggering an unacceptable vacuum instability far beneath the 10 TeV scale. An enhancement by a factor of 1.5 can be accommoda…
At hadron colliders, the leading production mechanism for a pair of photons is from quark-anti-quark annihilation at the tree level. However, due to large gluon-gluon luminosity, the loop-induced process $gg\to γγ$ provides a substantial contribution. In particular, the amplitudes mediated by the top quark become important at the $t \bar t$ threshold and above. In this letter we present the first complete computation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections (up to $α_S^3$) to this process, including contributions from the top quark. These entail two-loop diagrams with massive propagators…
The amplitude of the diphoton decay of the Higgs boson is considered in an extension of the Standard Model involving heavy vectorlike fermions, which was recently suggested in the literature in order to explain a possible enhancement of the h -> gamma gamma decay rate. It is pointed out that generally in such models the decay amplitude acquires a sizable CP-odd contribution from the complex phases in the mass matrix of the new heavy fermions. The resulting CP violation in the diphoton decay can be studied experimentally when both photons are converted into e^+ e^- pairs by measuring the distri…
The ATLAS and CMS experiments have recently claimed discovery of a Higgs boson-like particle at ~5 sigma confidence and are beginning to test the Standard Model predictions for its production and decay. In a variety of supersymmetric models, a neutralino NLSP can decay dominantly to the Higgs and the LSP. In natural SUSY models, a light third generation squark decaying through this chain can lead to large excess Higgs production while evading existing BSM searches. Such models can be observed at the 8 TeV LHC in channels exploiting the rare diphoton decays of the Higgs produced in the cascade …
Although recent Higgs data from ATLAS and CMS are compatible with a Standard Model (SM) signal at $2σ$ level, both experiments see indications for an excess in the diphoton decay channel, which points to new physics beyond the SM. Given such a low Higgs mass $m_H \sim 125 {\rm GeV}$, another sign indicating the existence of new physics beyond the SM is the vacuum stability problem, i.e., the SM Higgs quartic coupling may run to negative values at a scale below the Planck scale. In this paper, we study the vacuum stability and enhanced Higgs diphoton decay rate in the Zee-Babu model, which was …
We study Higgs production and decays in the context of natural SUSY, allowing for an extended Higgs sector to account for a 125 GeV lightest Higgs boson. Under broad assumptions, Higgs observables at the LHC depend on at most four free parameters with restricted numerical ranges. Two parameters suffice to describe MSSM particle loops. The MSSM loop contribution to the diphoton rate is constrained from above by direct stop and chargino searches and by electroweak precision tests. Naturalness, in particular in demanding that rare B decays remain consistent with experiment without fine-tuned canc…
We propose a simple mechanism for copiously producing heavy Higgs bosons with enhanced decay rates to two photons at the LHC, within the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). In the CP-conserving limit of the theory, such a diphoton resonance may be identified with the heavier CP-even $H$ boson, whose gluon-fusion production and decay into two photons are enhanced by loops of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark $\tilde{t}_1$ when its mass $m_{\tilde{t}_1}$ happens to be near the $\tilde{t}^*_1\tilde{t}_1$ threshold, i.e.~for $m_{\tilde{t…
We calculate the $gg\toγγ$ amplitude by including the $t\bar t$ bound-state effects near their mass threshold. In terms of the non-relativistic expansion of the amplitude, the LO contribution is an energy-independent term in the one-loop amplitude. We include the NLO contribution described by the non-relativistic Green function and part of the NNLO contribution. Despite a missing NLO piece which can be accomplished with the two-loop-level amplitude via massive quarks, the shape of the diphoton mass spectrum is predicted with a good accuracy. Thanks to the simple and clean nature of the observa…
Supersymmetric extensions of the standard model contain additional heavy neutral Higgs bosons that are coupled to heavy scalar top quarks (stops). This system exhibits interesting field theoretic phenomena when the Higgs mass is close to the stop-antistop production threshold. Existing work in the literature has examined the digluon-to-diphoton cross section near threshold and has focused on enhancements in the cross section that might arise either from the perturbative contributions to the Higgs-to-digluon and Higgs-to-diphoton form factors or from mixing of the Higgs boson with stoponium sta…
We present a calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the loop-induced production of a photon pair through gluon fusion, including massive top quarks at two loops. The two-loop virtual amplitudes are computed via projecting onto a set of Lorentz structures related to linear polarisation states of external gauge bosons. All two-loop master integrals dependent on the top quark mass are evaluated numerically. Matching the fixed order NLO result to a calculation with threshold resummation, we obtain an accurate description of the diphoton invariant mass spectrum around the threshold of top quark …
We present a calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the loop-induced production of a photon pair through gluon fusion, including massive top quarks at two loops, where the two-loop integrals are calculated numerically. Matching the fixed-order NLO results to a threshold expansion, we obtain accurate results around the top quark pair production threshold. We analyse how the top quark threshold corrections affect distributions of the photon pair invariant mass and comment on the possibility of determining the top quark mass from precision measurements of the diphoton invariant mass spectrum.
Light, electrically charged vector-like `leptons' with order one Yukawa couplings can enhance the Higgs to diphoton decay rate, as is suggested by measurements of the signal strength μ_{γγ} by ATLAS and CMS. However, the large Yukawa interactions tend to drive the Higgs quartic coupling negative at a low scale Λ< 10 TeV, and as such new physics is required to stabilize the electroweak vacuum. A plausible option, which does not rely on supersymmetry, is that the Higgs in fact has a much larger tree level quartic coupling than in the Standard Model, which is possible with an extended scalar sect…
We show how an excess in the diphoton channel can be the effect of neither a resonance nor an end-point in a cascade decay, but rather of a threshold for virtual production of a pair of extra quarks, each with half of peak invariant mass, onsetting in both the $gg$-initiated production and the $γγ$-induced decay of an off-shell $Z$ boson. For our analysis we consider as paradigmatic example the 750 GeV excess previously seen at the end of 2015 with the Run 2 data of the LHC but not confirmed with 2016 data.
The small background and the sensitivity to charged particles via a leading order loop coupling make the diphoton channel a privileged experimental test for new physics models. We propose a simple archetypal scenario to generate a sharp di-photon resonance as a result of threshold enhancements in the effective coupling between a heavy pseudoscalar particle and new vector-like leptons. We therefore study three different scenarios consistent with the current experimental limits and deviating from the Standard Model at the 2~$σ$ level. The model also introduces a natural dark matter candidate abl…
We examine the role of seesaw motivated exotic scalars in loop-mediated Higgs decays. We consider a simple TeV-scale seesaw model built upon the fermionic quintuplet mediator in conjunction with the scalar quadruplet, where we examine portions of the model parameter space for which the contributions of charged components of the scalar quadruplet significantly increase the $h \to γγ$ decay rate. The most significant change in the diphoton width comes from a doubly charged scalar Φ^{--} which should be the lightest component in the scalar quadruplet. There is a mild suppression of the $h \to Z γ…
New physics thresholds which can modify the diphoton and dilepton Higgs branching ratios significantly may also provide new sources of CP and lepton flavor violation. We find that limits on electric dipole moments impose strong constraints on any CP-odd contributions to Higgs diphoton decays unless there are degeneracies in the Higgs sector that enhance CP-violating mixing. We exemplify this point in the language of effective operators and in simple UV-complete models with vector-like fermions. In contrast, we find that electric dipole moments and lepton flavor violating observables provide le…
Motivated by the recent excess in the diphoton invariant mass near 750 GeV, we explore a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model that includes the minimal set of superpartners as well as additional Dirac partner chiral superfields in the adjoint representation for each gauge group. The bino partner pseudoscalar is identified as the 750 GeV resonance, while superpotential interactions between it and the gluino (wino) partners yield production via gluon fusion (decay to photon pairs) at one-loop. The gauginos and these additional adjoint superpartners are married by a Dirac mass and must …
Threshold enhancements predicted by the Resonance-Spectrum-Expansion (RSE) production amplitude and observed by the BaBaR Collaboration in open-bottom production above the $B\bar{B}$ threshold, as well as by several collaborations in open-charm production above the $D\bar{D}$ threshold, can also be seen in diphoton amplitudes at energies above 100 GeV. One such threshold effect is visible in tau-tau and muon-muon data of the L3 Collaboration at LEP, and in the diphoton and four-lepton data of the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations at LHC, as it is enhanced by the nearby presence of the Higgs resonan…
We show that the recent discovery of a new boson at the LHC, which we assume to be a Higgs boson, and the observed enhancement in its diphoton decays compared to the SM prediction, can be explained by a new doublet of charged vector bosons from an extended electroweak gauge sector model with SU(3)$_C\otimesSU(3)_L\otimesU(1)_X$ symmetry. Our results show a good agreement between our theoretical expected sensitivity to a 126--125 GeV Higgs boson and the experimental significance observed in the diphoton channel at the 8 TeV LHC. Effects of an invisible decay channel for the Higgs boson are also…
We study Higgs production and decay from TeV scale string balls in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 14 TeV at LHC. We present the results of total cross section of diphotons, invariant mass distribution of the diphotons and $p_T$ distribution of the diphotons and $ZZ$ pairs from Higgs from string balls at LHC. We find that the invariant mass distribution of diphotons from Higgs from string balls is not very sensitive to the increase in diphoton invariant mass. We find that for string mass scale $M_s$=2.5 TeV, which is the lower limit of the string mass scale set by the recent CMS collaboration …
Pair production of colored particles is in general accompanied by production of QCD bound states (onia) slightly below the pair-production threshold. Bound state annihilation leads to resonant signals, which in some cases are easier to see than the decays of the pair-produced constituents. In a previous paper (arXiv:1204.1119) we estimated the bound state signals, at leading order and in the Coulomb approximation, for particles with various spins, color representations and electric charges, and used 7 TeV ATLAS and CMS resonance searches to set rough limits. Here we update our results to inclu…
In light of recent remarkable progress in Higgs search at the LHC, we study the rare decay process $h \to Zγ$ and show its correlation with the decay $h \to γγ$ in low energy SUSY models such as CMSSM, MSSM, NMSSM and nMSSM. Under various experimental constraints, we scan the parameter space of each model, and present in the allowed parameter space the SUSY predictions on the $Zγ$ and $γγ$ signal rates in the Higgs production at the LHC and future e+e- linear colliders. We have following observations: (i) Compared with the SM prediction, the $Zγ$ and $γγ$ signal rates in the CMSSM are both sli…
We study the implications of light third generation sparticles on the production cross section and decay widths of a light CP-even Higgs boson. For simplicity, we consider scenarios in which only one of the sfermions from the third generation is light. For each case, we attempt to explain the apparently large enhancement in the Higgs production and decay in the diphoton channel with small deviations in the ZZ channel. In the MSSM framework we find that only a light stau can explain these observations while keeping the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass in the interval 123 GeV \lesssim m_h \less…
The baryon-antibaryon spectrum consisting of strange, charm and bottom quarks is studied in the color flux-tube model with a multi-body confinement interaction. Numerical results indicate that many low-spin baryon-antibaryon states can form compact hexaquark states and are stable against the decay into a baryon and an antibaryon. The multi-body confinement interaction as a binding mechanism plays an important role in the formation of the states. They can be searched in the $e^+e^-$ annihilation and charmonium or bottomonium decay if they really exist. The newly reported states, X(1835), X(2370…
