We examine a regime in which a linearly-polarized laser pulse with relativistic intensity irradiates a sub-critical plasma for much longer than the characteristic electron response time. A steady-state channel is formed in the plasma in this case with quasi-static transverse and longitudinal electric fields. These relatively weak fields significantly alter the electron dynamics. The longitudinal electric field reduces the longitudinal dephasing between the electron and the wave, leading to an enhancement of the electron energy gain from the pulse. The energy gain in this regime is ultimately limited by the superluminosity of the wave fronts induced by the plasma in the channel. The transverse electric field alters the oscillations of the transverse electron velocity, allowing it to remain anti-parallel to laser electric field and leading to a significant energy gain. The energy enhancement is accompanied by development of significant oscillations perpendicular to the plane of the driven motion, making trajectories of energetic electrons three-dimensional. Proper electron injection into the laser beam can further boost the electron energy gain.
The ponderomotive perturbation in the interaction region of laser radiation with a low density and low-temperature plasma is considered. Estimates of the perturbation magnitude are determined from the plasma parameters, geometry, intensity and wavelength of laser radiation. It is shown that ponderomotive perturbations can lead to large errors in the electron density when measured using Thomson scattering.
We present results of twisted plasma waves driven by twisted ponderomotive force. With beating of two, co-propagating, Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) orbital angular momentum (OAM) laser pulses with different frequencies and also different twist indices, we can get twisted ponderomotive force. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to demonstrate the twisted plasma waves driven by lasers. The twisted plasma waves have an electron density perturbation with a helical rotating structure. Different from the predictions of the linear fluid theory, the simulation results show a nonlinear ro…
Several years ago, G. Brodin, A. P. Misra, and M. Marklund considered "Spin Contribution to the Ponderomotive Force in a Plasma" Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{105}, 105004 (2010). They applied a two fluid model of electron gas where spin-up and spin-down electrons are considered as two different species. Their approach to this problem appears to be in disagreement with the Pauli equation. The correct model is presented in this comment.
In laser-solid interactions, electrons may be generated and subsequently accelerated to energies of the order-of-magnitude of the ponderomotive limit, with the underlying process dominated by direct laser acceleration. Breaking this limit, realized here by a radially-polarized laser pulse incident upon a wire target, can be associated with several novel effects. Three-dimensional Particle-In-Cell simulations show a relativistic intense laser pulse can extract electrons from the wire and inject them into the accelerating field. Anti-dephasing, resulting from collective plasma effects, are shown…
It is well--known that when magnetic monopoles are introduced in plasma equations the propagation of electromagnetic waves is modified. This occurs because of Maxwell equations acquire a symmetrical structure due to the existence of electric and magnetic charge current densities. In this work we study the nonlinear phenomena of ponderomotive forces associated to the presence of magnetic monopoles in a plasma. We generalize the Washimi-Karpman result for the ponderomotive force on electric charges to take into account the symmetrical form of Maxwell equations in the presence of magnetic charges…
The stability theory of the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) is developed for the case when the electron quiver velocity in RF wave is of the order of or is larger than the electron thermal velocity. The theory predicts the existence the instabilities of the ICP which are driven by the current formed in the skin layer by the accelerated electrons, which move relative ions under the action of the ponderomotive force.
We derive the force exerted in the background plasma by an arbitrary distribution of non interacting quasi-particles, corresponding to either collective excitations of the plasma (plasmons, phonons) or em dressed particles (photons, neutrinos). Our approach is based on the effective Hamiltonian describing the quasi-classical dynamics of the individual particles in the presence of a background medium. We recover the usual results for the relativistic ponderomotive force of a photon gas, and we derive the force, due to weak interactions, exerted by the electron-neutrinos in a background medium c…
The stability theory of the skin layer plasma of the inductive discharge is developed for the case when the electron quiver velocity in RF wave is of the order of or is larger than the electron thermal velocity. This theory is grounded on the methodology of the oscillating modes, which accounts for the oscillation motion of the electron component relative to the unmovable ions in the spatially inhomogeneous RF field of the skin layer. The theory predicts the existence the instability of the parametric type in a skin layer with the growth rate comparable with frequency. This instability stems f…
The electron and positron acceleration in the first cycle of a laser-driven wakefield is investigated. Separatrices between different types of the particle motion (confined, reflected by the wakefield or ponderomotive potential and transient) are demonstrated. The ponderomotive acceleration is negligible for electrons but is substantial for positrons. An electron bunch, injected as quasi-monoenergetic, acquires a localized energy spectrum with a cut-off at the maximum energy.
The excitation of electrostatic waves in plasma by laser electromagnetic pulse is important as it provides a scheme by which the power from the laser electromagnetic (EM) field can be transferred into the plasma medium. The paper presents a fundamentally new ponderomotive pressure-driven mechanism of excitation of electrostatic waves in an overdense magnetized plasma by a finite laser pulse. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations using the EPOCH-4.17.10 framework have been utilized for the study of a finite laser pulse interacting with a magnetized overdense plasma medium. The external magnetic fi…
Wave induced attraction of matter is a unique aspect of ponderomotive forcing by electromagnetic (e/m) waves in plasmas. The Miller force, sometimes denoted the gradient force, is of particular interest, because the direction as well as magnitude of the Miller force on a plasma depends on the wave frequency. While plasma is usually considered in its gaseous form, solid bodies can also be treated as plasma, denoted solid-state plasma. The first experimental proof of wave effects in magnetized solid-state plasmas (Lundqvist, 1949, Herlofson, 1950) came after the suggestion by Alfvén (1942) on th…
Starting from a covariant cycle-averaged Lagrangian the relativistic oscillation center equation of motion of a point charge is deduced and analytical formulae for the ponderomotive force in a travelling wave of arbitrary strength are presented. It is further shown that the ponderomotive forces for transverse and longitudinal waves are different; in the latter, uphill acceleration can occur. In a standing wave there exists a threshold intensity above which, owing to transition to chaos, the secular motion can no longer be described by a regular ponderomotive force. The spatio-temporal evolution of nonlinear oscillations in multi-species plasma is revisited to provide more insight into the physics of phase mixing by constructing two sets of nonlinear solutions up to the second order. The first solution exhibits perfect oscillations in the linear regime and phase mixing appears only nonlinearly in the second order as a response to the ponderomotive forces. This response can be both direct and indirect. The indirect contribution of the ponderomotive forces appears through self-consistently generated low frequency fields. Furthermore, the direct and indirect…
It is shown that static longitudinal and transverse electric fields can significantly alter electron acceleration by a long laser beam in a sub-critical plasma, enabling generation of super-ponderomotive electrons. The role of the plasma fields in this regime is not to directly transfer substantial energy to the electron, but rather to reduce the axial dephasing rate between the electron and the laser beam. The reduced dephasing in both cases leads to a subsequent enhancement of the axial momentum and total electron energy. These mechanisms can be relevant to experiments with solid-density tar…
A new electron injection scheme is proposed in sub-relativistic plasma wakefield accelerators. A transverse laser ionizes a dopant gas and ponderomotively accelerates the released electrons in the direction of wake propagation. This process enables electron trapping in the wakefield even for a wakefield potential below the trapping threshold. We study the scheme theoretically and by means of particle-in-cell simulations to demonstrate high-quality beam formation and acceleration with sub-micrometer normalized emittances and sub-percent uncorrelated energy spreads.
The concept of a ponderomotive force due to the intrinsic spin of electrons is developed. An expression containing both the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive force is derived. The results are used to demonstrate that an electromagnetic pulse can induce a spin-polarized plasma. Furthermore, it is shown that for certain parameters, the nonlinear back-reaction on the electromagnetic pulse from the spin magnetization current can be larger than that from the classical free current. Suitable parameter values for a direct test of this effect are presented.
We have studied laser pulse channeling in underdense plasma by means of analytical theory and 3D PIC simulations. The most significant result of this paper is the demonstration of the single fully evacuated stationary channel solution can be reached an asymptotic state in PIC simulations. In the lower density and for a laser power above channeling power, we were able to reproduce in PIC simulations the analytical curve. We showed that single channels are stable structures against symmetric perturbations. We also studied the formation of the ring structure in theory and simulations. An evacuate…
We use particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and simple analytic models to investigate the laser-plasma interaction known as ponderomotive steepening. When normally incident laser light reflects at the critical surface of a plasma, the resulting standing electromagnetic wave modifies the electron density profile via the ponderomotive force, which creates peaks in the electron density separated by approximately half of the laser wavelength. What is less well studied is how this charge imbalance accelerates ions towards the electron density peaks, modifying the ion density profile of the plasma. Id…
We consider a recently derived kinetic model for weakly relativistic quantum plasmas. We find that that the effects of spin-orbit interaction and Thomas precession may alter the linear dispersion relation for a magnetized plasma in case of high plasma densities and/or strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, the ponderomotive force induced by an electromagnetic pulse is studied for an unmagnetized plasma. It turns out that for this case the spin-orbit interaction always give a significant contribution to the quantum part of the ponderomotive force.
We derive the expression for the ponderomotive force in the real multicomponent magnetospheric plasma containing heavy ions. The ponderomotive force considered includes the induced magnetic moment of all the species and arises due to inhomogeneity of the traveling low-frequency electromagnetic wave amplitude in the nonuniform medium. The nonlinear stationary force balance equation is obtained taking into account the gravitational and centrifugal forces for the plasma consisting of the electrons, protons and heavy ions (He$^{+}$). The background geomagnetic field is taken for the dayside of the…
We report a point-particle ponderomotive model of a Dirac electron oscillating in a high-frequency field. Starting from the Dirac Lagrangian density, we derive a reduced phase-space Lagrangian that describes the relativistic time-averaged dynamics of such a particle in a geometrical-optics laser pulse propagating in vacuum. The pulse is allowed to have an arbitrarily large amplitude (provided radiation damping and pair production are negligible) and a wavelength comparable to the particle de Broglie wavelength. The model captures the Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi (BMT) spin dynamics, the Stern-Gerla…
The oscillation-center Hamiltonian is derived for a relativistic electron injected with an arbitrary momentum in a linearly polarized laser pulse propagating in tenuous plasma, assuming that the pulse length is smaller than the plasma wavelength. For hot electrons generated at collisions with ions under intense laser drive, multiple regimes of ponderomotive acceleration are identified and the laser dispersion is shown to affect the process at plasma densities down to 10^17 cm-3. Assuming a/gamma_g << 1, which prevents net acceleration of the cold plasma, it is also shown that the normalized en…
When waves damp or amplify on resonant particles in a plasma, the nonresonant particles experience a recoil force that conserves the total momentum between the particles and electromagnetic fields. This force is important to understand, as it can completely negate current drive and rotation drive mechanisms that are predicted on the basis of only the resonant particles. Here, the existing electrostatic theory of this recoil force is extended to electromagnetic waves. While the result bears close similarity to historical fluid theories of laser-plasma interactions, it now incorporates both reso…
Reduced equations that describe low-frequency plasma dynamics play an important role in our understanding of plasma behavior over long time scales. One of the oldest paradigms for reduced plasma dynamics involves the ponderomotive Hamiltonian formulation of the oscillation-center dynamics of charged particles (over slow space-time scales) in a weakly-nonuniform background plasma perturbed by an electromagnetic field with fast space-time scales. These reduced plasma equations are derived here by Lie-transform and variational methods for the case of a weakly-magnetized background plasma. In part…
We present a self-consistent two-dimensional fluid model of the temporal and spatial development of the One Atmosphere Uniform Glow Discharge Plasma (OAUGDP$^{\circledR}$). Continuity equations for electrically charged species N$_2^+$, N$_4^+$, O$_2^+$, O$_2^-$ and electrons are solved coupled to the Poisson equation, subject to appropriate boundary conditions. It was used an algorithm proposed by Patankar$^{\cite{Patankar}}$. The transport parameters and rate coefficients for electrons at atmospheric pressure are obtained by solving the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for electrons under the h…
The dynamics of transient electric fields generated by the interaction of high intensity laser pulses with underdense plasmas has been studied experimentally with the proton projection imaging technique. The formation of a charged channel, the propagation of its front edge and the late electric field evolution have been characterised with high temporal and spatial resolution. Particle-in-cell simulations and an electrostatic, ponderomotive model reproduce the experimental features and trace them back to the ponderomotive expulsion of electrons and the subsequent ion acceleration.
Intense lasers can accelerate electrons to very high energy over a short distance. Such compact accelerators have several potential applications including fast ignition, high energy physics, and radiography. Among the various schemes of laser-based electron acceleration, vacuum laser acceleration has the merits of super-high acceleration gradient and great simplicity. Yet its realization has been difficult because injecting free electrons into the fast-oscillating laser field is not trivial. Here we demonstrate free-electron injection and subsequent vacuum laser acceleration of electrons up to…
It is shown that electrons with momenta exceeding the `free electron' limit of $m_eca_0^2/2$ can be produced when a laser pulse and a longitudinal electric field interact with an electron via a non-wakefield mechanism. The mechanism consists of two stages: the reduction of the electron dephasing rate $γ-p_x/m_ec$ by an accelerating region of electric field and electron acceleration by the laser via the Lorentz force. This mechanism can, in principle, produce electrons that have longtudinal momenta that is a significant multiple of $m_eca_0^2/2$. 2D PIC simulations of a relatively simple laser-…
Presented here is a general view on adiabatic and resonant wave-particle interactions leading to a uniform description of nonlinear ponderomotive effects in very different environments, from low-temperature plasmas to relativistic plasmas or even atoms in laser light. Treating the wave-particle interaction as a classical mode-coupling problem, this theory shows the inherent connection between the ponderomotive forces and the properties of waves causing those forces. The adiabatic Lagrangians are derived for single particles and nonlinear waves, possibly carrying trapped particles, and yield bo…
A Gaussian laser pulse with a square profile in time propagating in a parabolic plasma channel, exerts a ponderomotive force on electrons that drives a large amplitude electrostatic wake potential phi. An analytic solution for phi is possible when a characteristic relation is fulfilled. For pulse duration tau ~ 9 tau_p / 4, where tau_p is the plasma period, the plasma wake potential on the axis is twice the ponderomotive potential phi_0.
We study the laser-driven acceleration of electrons from overdense hydrogen clusters to energies of up to 13 MeV in laser forward direction and several hundreds of keV in an outer ring-like structure. The use of cryogenic hydrogen allows for high repetition-rate operation and examination of the influence of source parameters like temperature and gas flow. The outer ring-like structure of accelerated electrons, originating from the interaction, that is robust against the change of laser and target parameters can be observed for low electron densities of ca. 3$\times$10$^{16}$ cm$^{-3}$. For hig…
We report observation of kHz-pulsed-laser-accelerated electron energies up to 3 MeV in the -$k_\text{laser}$ (backward) direction from a 3 mJ laser interacting at normal incidence with a solid density, flowing-liquid target. The electrons/MeV/s.r. >1 MeV recorded here using a mJ-class laser exceeds or equals that of prior super-ponderomotive electron studies employing lasers at lower repetition-rates and oblique incidence. Focal intensity of the 40-fs-duration laser is 1.5 $\cdot$ 10$^{18}$ W cm$^{-2}$, corresponding to only ~80 keV electron ponderomotive energy. Varying laser intensity confir…
One-dimensional steady-state plasma-field structures in overdense plasma are studied assuming that the electron temperature is uniform over plasma bulk and the ions are stationary. It is shown that there may exist solutions for electron distributions with cavitation regions in plasma under the action of ponderomotive force
We report on new findings in a laser driven enhanced electron beam generation in the multi MeV energy range at moderate relativistic laser intensities and their applications. In our experiment, an intense sub-picosecond laser pulse propagates through a plasma of a near critical electron density (NCD) and direct laser acceleration (DLA) of electrons takes place. The breakthrough toward high current relativistic electron beams became possible due to application of low density polymer foams of sub-mm thickness. In foams, the NCD-plasma was produced by a mechanism of super-sonic ionization. Compar…
The excitation of wakefields by a triangular temporal profile laser pulse with an abrupt fall in a step density profile plasma channel is investigated analytically and an exact solution is obtained. The excitation is more efficient for t~tp, where t is the rise time of the pulse and tp is the plasma period, though it is still significant for t~20 tp. The wake potential in the former case is 1.7 times the ponderomotive potential, whereas it falls to 1.4 times the ponderomotive potential for the latter.

For the purpose of laser wakefield acceleration, it turned out that also the injection of electron bunches longer than a plasma wavelength can generate accelerated femtosecond bunches with relatively low energy spread. This is of high interest because such injecting bunches can be provided, e.g., by state-of-the-art photo cathode RF guns. Here we point out that when an e-bunch is injected in the wakefield it is important to take into account the ponderomotive scattering of the injecting bunch by the laser pulse in the vacuum region located in front of the plasma. At low energies of the injecte…
The physics governing electron acceleration by a relativistically intense laser are not confined to the critical density surface, they also pervade the sub-critical plasma in front of the target. Here, particles can gain many times the ponderomotive energy from the overlying laser, and strong fields can grow. Experiments using a high contrast laser and a prescribed laser pre-pulse demonstrate that development of the pre-plasma has an unexpectedly strong effect on the most energetic, super-ponderomotive electrons. Presented 2D particle-in-cell simulations reveal how strong, voluminous magnetic …
We consider a situation in when the interaction of relativistically intense EM waves with an isotropic electron positron plasma takes place, i.e.,we consider short pulse lasers with intensity up to 1021 W/cm2, in which the photon density is of the order of 1030cm3 and the strength of electric field E = 10^9 statvolt/cm. Such a situation is possible in astrophysical and laboratory plasma which are subject to intense laser radiation, thus leading to non thermal equilibrium field radiations. Such interaction of the super-strong laser radiation with an isotropic pair plasma leads to the generation…
Incoherent Thomson scattering is a non-intrusive technique commonly used for measuring local plasma density. Within low-density, low-temperature plasma's and for sufficient laser intensity, the laser may perturb the local electron density via the ponderomotive force, causing the diagnostic to become intrusive and leading to erroneous results. A theoretical model for this effect is validated numerically via kinetic simulations of a quasi-neutral plasma using the Particle-in-Cell technique.
The mechanism of stochastic electron acceleration in colliding laser waves is investigated by employing proper canonical variables and effective time, such that the new Hamiltonian becomes time independent when the perturbative (weaker) laser wave is absent. The performed analytical analysis clearly reveals the physical picture of stochastic electron dynamics. It shows that when the amplitude of the perturbative laser field exceeds some critical value, stochastic electron acceleration occurs within some electron energy range. The conditions, at which the maximum electron energy gained under st…
