[GKH94] 41 and IRAS 04191+1523B were previously identified to be proto-brown dwarf candidates in Taurus. [GKH94] 41 was classified to be a class I object. The dereddened spectral energy distribution of the source was later found to be suggestive of a class II object. IRAS 04191+1523B is a class I object that is the secondary component of a binary. We determine the evolutionary stage of [GKH94] 41 and estimate the final masses of the two proto-brown dwarf candidates. We used archive millimeter observations to produce continuum maps and collected data from the literature to construct the spectral energy distribution of the targets. Our continuum maps revealed that both [GKH94] 41 and IRAS 04191+1523B are surrounded by envelopes. This provides direct evidence that [GKH94] 41 is a class I object, not class II, as previously classified. For IRAS 04191+1523B, our continuum map spatially resolved the binary. Our estimated final masses are below 49$^{+56}_{-27}$ $M_{\rm J}$ and 75$^{+40}_{-26}$ $M_{\rm J}$ for [GKH94] 41 and IRAS 04191+1523B, respectively. This indicates that both sources will likely become brown dwarfs or very low-mass stars. Therefore, [GKH94] 41 and IRAS 04191+1523B are two new confirmed class I very low-mass objects. Their existence also supports the scenario that brown dwarfs have the same formation stages as low-mass stars.
We report on the properties of pre-main-sequence objects in the Taurus molecular clouds as observed in 7 mid- and far-infrared bands with the Spitzer Space Telescope. There are 215 previously-identified members of the Taurus star-forming region in our ~44 square degree map; these members exhibit a range of Spitzer colors that we take to define young stars still surrounded by circumstellar dust (noting that ~20% of the bonafide Taurus members exhibit no detectable dust excesses). We looked for new objects in the survey field with similar Spitzer properties, aided by extensive optical, X-ray, an…
We present a multi-epoch radio study of the Taurus-Auriga star-forming complex made with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at frequencies of 4.5 GHz and 7.5 GHz. We detect a total of 610 sources, 59 of which are related to young stellar objects and 18 to field stars. The properties of 56\% of the young stars are compatible with non-thermal radio emission. We also show that the radio emission of more evolved young stellar objects tends to be more non-thermal in origin and, in general, that their radio properties are compatible with those found in other star forming regions. By comparing our r…
We investigate the environment of the very low-luminosity object L1521F IRS using data from the Taurus Spitzer Legacy Survey. The MIPS 160 micron image shows both extended emission from the Taurus cloud as well as emission from multiple cold cores over a 1 X 2 deg region. Analysis shows that the cloud dust temperature is 14.2 +- 0.4 K and the extinction ratio is A_160/A_K = 0.010 +- 0.001 up to A_V ~ 4 mag. We find kappa_160 = 0.23 +- 0.046 cm^2/g for the specific opacity of the gas-dust mixture. Therefore, for dust in the Taurus cloud we find the 160 um opacity is significantly higher than th…
We present results from a large, high-spatial-resolution near-infrared imaging search for stellar and sub-stellar companions in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. The sample covers 64 stars with masses between those of the most massive Taurus members at ~3 M_sun and low-mass stars at ~0.2 M_sun. We detected 74 companion candidates, 34 of these reported for the first time. Twenty-five companions are likely physically bound, partly confirmed by follow-up observations. Four candidate companions are likely unrelated field stars. Assuming physical association with their host star, estimated com…
We report here our search for molecular outflows from young very low mass stars and brown dwarfs in Taurus and rho Ophiuchi. Using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), we have observed 4 targets at 1.3 mm wavelength (230 GHz) to search for CO J=2-->1 outflows. A young very low mass star MHO 5 (in Taurus) with an estimated mass of 90 M_J, which is just above the hydrogen-burning limit, shows two gas lobes that are likely outflows. While the CO map of MHO 5 does not show a clear structure of outflow, possibly due to environment g…
The number of low-mass brown dwarfs and even free floating planetary mass objects in young nearby star-forming regions and associations is continuously increasing, offering the possibility to study the low-mass end of the IMF in greater detail. In this paper, we present six new candidates for (very) low-mass objects in the Taurus star-forming region one of which was recently discovered in parallel by Luhman et al. (2009). The underlying data we use is part of a new database from a deep near-infrared survey at the Calar Alto observatory. The survey is more than four magnitudes deeper than the 2…
Transition disc systems are young stars that appear to be on the verge of dispersing their protoplanetary discs. We explore the nature of these systems by comparing the stellar accretion rates and disc masses of transition discs and normal T Tauri stars in Taurus and Ophiuchus. After controlling for the known dependencies of stellar accretion rate and disc mass and on age, stellar accretion rate on stellar mass, and disc mass on the presence of stellar or sub-stellar companions, we find that the normal T Tauri stars show a trend of stellar accretion rate increasing with disc mass. The transiti…
Starless dense cores eventually collapse dynamically, which forms protostars inside them, and the physical properties of the cores determine the nature of the forming protostars. We report ALMA observations of dust continuum emission and molecular rotational lines toward MC27 or L1521F, which is considered to be very close to the first protostellar core phase. We found a few starless high-density cores, one of which has a very high density of ~10^7 cm^-3, within a region of several hundred AU around a very low-luminosity protostar detected by Spitzer. A very compact bipolar outflow with a dyna…
We present SCUBA-2 850um observations for 7 very low mass stars (VLMS) and brown dwarfs (BDs): 3 in Taurus, 4 in the TWA, and all classical T Tauri (cTT) analogs. We detect 2 of the 3 Taurus disks, but none of the TWA ones. Our 3sigma limits correspond to a dust mass of 1.2 MEarth in Taurus and a mere 0.2 MEarth in the TWA (3--10x deeper than previous work). We combine our data with other sub-mm/mm surveys of Taurus, rho Oph and the TWA to investigate trends in disk mass and grain growth during the cTT phase. We find : (1) The minimum disk outer radius required to explain the upper envelope of…
We present an analysis of K2 light curves (LCs) from Campaigns 4 and 13 for members of the young ($\sim$3 Myr) Taurus association, in addition to an older ($\sim$30 Myr) population of stars that is largely in the foreground of the Taurus molecular clouds. Out of 156 of the highest-confidence Taurus members, we find that 81\% are periodic. Our sample of young foreground stars is biased and incomplete, but nearly all (37/38) are periodic. The overall distribution of rotation rates as a function of color (a proxy for mass) is similar to that found in other clusters: the slowest rotators are among…
We aim to estimate if structures, such as cavities, rings, and gaps, are common in disks around VLMS and to test models of structure formation in these disks. We also aim to compare the radial extent of the gas and dust emission in disks around VLMS, which can give us insight about radial drift. We studied six disks around VLMS in the Taurus star-forming region using ALMA Band 7 ($\sim 340\,$GHz) at a resolution of $\sim0.1''$. The targets were selected because of their high disk dust content in their stellar mass regime. Our observations resolve the disk dust continuum in all disks. In additi…
We report here our latest search for molecular outflows from young brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars in nearby star-forming regions. We have observed three sources in Taurus with the Submillimeter Array and the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy at 230 GHz frequency to search for CO J=2-1 outflows. We obtain a tentative detection of a redshifted and extended gas lobe at about 10 arcsec from the source GM Tau, a young brown dwarf in Taurus with an estimated mass of 73 M_J, which is right below the hydrogen-burning limit. No blueshifted emission around the brown dwarf po…
Discovery of Asymmetric Spike-like Structures of the 10 au Disk around the Very Low-luminosity Protostar Embedded in the Taurus Dense Core MC 27/L1521F with ALMA
We used the WINERED spectrograph to perform near-infrared high-resolution spectroscopy (resolving power $R = 28$,000) of 13 young intermediate-mass stars in the Taurus star-forming region. Based on the presence of near- and mid-infrared continuum emission, young intermediate-mass stars can be classified into three different evolutionary stages: Phases I, II, and III in the order of evolution. Our obtained spectra ($λ= 0.91$--1.35\,$μ$m) depict \HeI $λ$10830 and P$β$ lines that are sensitive to magnetospheric accretion and winds. We also investigate five sources each for P$β$ and \ion{He}{1} li…
We are conducting a proper-motion survey for young brown dwarfs in the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud based on the Pan-STARRS1 3$π$ Survey. Our search uses multi-band photometry and astrometry to select candidates, and is wider (370 deg$^{2}$) and deeper (down to $\approx$3 M$_{\rm Jup}$) than previous searches. We present here our search methods and spectroscopic follow-up of our high-priority candidates. Since extinction complicates spectral classification, we have developed a new approach using low-resolution ($R \approx 100$) near-infrared spectra to quantify reddening-free spectral types, …
We present an Advanced Camera for Surveys/ Solar Blind Channel far-ultraviolet (FUV) study of \h2 gas in 12 weak T Tauri stars in nearby star-forming regions. The sample consists of sources which have no evidence of inner disk dust. Our new FUV spectra show that in addition to the dust, the gas is depleted from the inner disk. This sample is combined with a larger FUV sample of accretors and non-accretors with ages between 1 and 100 Myr, showing that as early as 1--3 Myr, systems both with and without gas are found. Possible mechanisms for depleting gas quickly include viscous evolution, plane…
We report the discovery of a resolved (0".9) substellar companion to a member of the 1-5 Myr Taurus star-forming region. The host star (2M0437) is a single mid-M type ($T_{eff}\approx$3100K) dwarf with a position, space motion, and color-magnitude that support Taurus membership, and possible affiliation with a $\sim$2.5 Myr-old sub-group. A comparison with stellar models suggests a 2-5 Myr age and a mass of 0.15-0.18M$_{\odot}$. Although K2 detected quasi-periodic dimming from close-in circumstellar dust, the star lacks detectable excess infrared emission from a circumstellar disk and its H$α$…
We present the results of ALMA observations of dust continuum emission and molecular rotational lines toward a dense core MC27 (aka L1521F) in Taurus, which is considered to be at a very early stage of star formation. The detailed column density distribution on size scales from a few tens AU to ~10,000 AU scale are revealed by combining the ALMA (12 m array + 7 m array) data with the published/unpublished single-dish data. The high angular resolution observations at 0.87 mm with a synthesized beam size of ~0."74 x 0."32 reveal that a protostellar source, MMS-1, is not spatially resolved and la…
The Radiowave Hunt for Young Stellar Object Emission and Demographics (RADIOHEAD): A Radio Luminosity${-}$Spectral Type Dependence in Taurus${-}$Auriga YSOs
The chemical composition of gas and ice in disks around young stars set the bulk composition of planets. In contrast to protoplanetary disks (Class II), young disks that are still embedded in their natal envelope (Class 0 and I) are predicted to be too warm for CO to freeze out, as has been confirmed observationally for L1527 IRS. To establish whether young disks are generally warmer than their more evolved counterparts, we observed five young (Class 0/I and Class I) disks in Taurus with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), targeting C$^{17}$O $2-1$, H$_2$CO $3_{1,2}-2_{1,1…

Context. Transition disks (TDs) are circumstellar disks with inner regions highly depleted in dust. TDs are observed in a small fraction of disk-bearing objects at ages of 1-10 Myr. They are important laboratories to study evolutionary effects in disks, from photoevaporation to planet-disk interactions. Aims. We report the discovery of a large inner dust-empty region in the disk around the very low mass star CIDA 1 (M$_{\star} \sim 0.1-0.2$ M$_{\odot}$). Methods. We used ALMA continuum observations at 887$μ$m, which provide a spatial resolution of $0."21\times0."12$ ($\sim$15$\times$8 au in ra…
We present our investigation of 319 Class II objects in Orion A observed by $Spitzer$/IRS. We also present the follow-up observation of 120 of these Class II objects in Orion A from IRTF/SpeX. We measure continuum spectral indices, equivalent widths, and integrated fluxes that pertain to disk structure and dust composition from IRS spectra of Class II objects in Orion A. We estimate mass accretion rates using hydrogen recombination lines in the SpeX spectra of our targets. Utilizing these properties, we compare the distributions of the disk and dust properties of Orion A disks to those of Taur…
We report on the λ = 5-36μm Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph spectra of 79 young stellar objects in the very young nearby cluster NGC 1333. NGC 1333's youth enables the study of early protoplanetary disk properties, such as the degree of settling as well as the formation of gaps and clearings. We construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using our IRS data as well as published photometry and classify our sample into SED classes. Using "extinction-free" spectral indices, we determine whether the disk, envelope, or photosphere dominates the spectrum. We analyze the dereddened spectra of object…

We present high resolution Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics imaging of 43 late-M, L and T dwarf systems with Keck/NIRC2. These include 17 spectral binary candidates, systems whose spectra suggest the presence of a T dwarf secondary. We resolve three systems: 2MASS J1341$-$3052, SDSS J1511+0607 and SDSS J2052$-$1609; the first two are resolved for the first time. All three have projected separations $<8$ AU and estimated periods of $14-80$ years. We also report a preliminary orbit determination for SDSS J2052$-$1609 based on six epochs of resolved astrometry between 2005$-$2010. Among the 14 un…
We test state-of-the-art model atmospheres for young very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the infrared, by comparing the predicted synthetic photometry over 1.2-24 μm to the observed photometry of M-type spectral templates in star-forming regions. We find that (1) in both early and late young M types, the model atmospheres imply effective temperatures (Teff) several hundred Kelvin lower than predicted by the standard Pre-Main Sequence spectral type-Teff conversion scale (based on theoretical evolutionary models). It is only in the mid-M types that the two temperature estimates agree. (2) Th…
We report the identification of the M9 dwarf SDSS J000649.16-085246.3 as a spectral binary and radial velocity variable with components straddling the hydrogen burning mass limit. Low-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy reveals spectral features indicative of a T dwarf companion, and spectral template fitting yields component types of M8.5\pm0.5 and T5\pm1. High-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy with Keck/NIRSPEC reveals pronounced radial velocity variations with a semi-amplitude of 8.2\pm0.4 km/s. From these we determine an orbital period of 147.6\pm1.5 days and eccentricity of 0.10\pm0…
We report on initial results from a Spitzer program to search for very low-mass brown dwarfs in Ophiuchus. This program is an extension of an earlier study by Allers et al. which had resulted in an extraordinary success rate, 18 confirmed out of 19 candidates. Their program combined near-infrared and Spitzer photom- etry to identify objects with very cool photospheres together with circumstellar disk emission to indicate youth. Our new program has obtained deep IRAC pho- tometry of a 0.5 deg2 field that was part of the original Allers et al. study. We report 18 new candidates whose luminositie…
Measurement of the substellar initial mass function (IMF) in very young clusters is hampered by the possibility of the age spread of cluster members. This is particularly serious for candidate planetary mass objects (PMOs), which have a very similar location to older and more massive brown dwarfs on the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram (HRD). This degeneracy can be lifted by the measurement of gravity-sensitive spectral features. To this end we have obtained medium resolution (R~5000) Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) K band spectra of a sample of late M- / early L-type dwarfs. The s…
We discover that the very young very low-mass star ISO143 (M5) is driving an outflow based on spectro-astrometry of forbidden [SII] emission lines at 6716A and 6731A observed in UVES/VLT spectra. This adds another object to the handful of brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars (M5-M8) for which an outflow has been confirmed and which show that the T Tauri phase continues at very low masses. We find the outflow of ISO143 to be intrinsically asymmetric and the accretion disk to not obscure the outflow, as only the red outflow component is visible in the [SII] lines. ISO143 is only the third T Taur…
We report two nearby high proper motion dwarfs of special interest identified using the Preliminary Data Release of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS). WISEP J191239.91-361516.4 has a motion of 2.1 arcseconds per year. Photometry identifies it as a mid-M dwarf. WISEP J190648.47+401106.8 is a spectroscopically confirmed L1 dwarf in the Kepler Mission field with a motion of 0.48 arcseconds per year. The estimated distance is 17 parsecs. Both lie at relatively low galactic latitudes and demonstrate the possibility of discovering proper motion …
We present ALMA continuum and spectral line data at 0.89 mm and 3.2 mm for three disks surrounding young brown dwarfs and very low mass stars in the Taurus star forming region. Dust thermal emission is detected and spatially resolved for all the three disks, while CO(J=3-2) emission is seen in two disks. We analyze the continuum visibilities and constrain the disks physical structure in dust. The results of our analysis show that the disks are relatively large, the smallest one with an outer radius of about 70 AU. The inferred disk radii, radial profiles of the dust surface density and disk to…
Whilst there is a generally accepted evolutionary scheme for the formation of low-mass stars, the analogous processes when moving down in mass to the brown dwarfs regime are not yet well understood. In this first paper we try to build the most complete and unbiased spectroscopically confirmed census of the population of Collinder 69, the central cluster of the Lambda Orionis star forming region, as a first step in addressing the question of how brown dwarfs and planetary mass objects form. We have studied age dependent features in optical and near-infrared spectra of candidate members to the c…
TMR-1 (IRAS~04361+2547) is a class~I proto-stellar source located in the nearby Taurus star-forming region. Its circumstellar environment is characterized by extended dust emission with complex structures and conspicuous filaments. A faint companion, called TMR-1C, located near the proto-star had been detected in previous studies, but its nature as a very young substellar object remained inconclusive. To improve the constraints on the nature of TMR-1C, and to investigate the process of very low-mass star formation in the TMR-1 system we use very sensitive infrared imaging observations as well …
We present results constraining the multiplicity of the very low mass stars and sub-stellar objects in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Our sample covers primary masses 0.012-0.1M$_{\odot}$ using archival Hubble Space Telescope data obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys using multiple filters. Studying the binary populations of clusters provides valuable constraints of how the birth environment affects binary formation and evolution. Prior surveys have shown that the binary populations of high-mass, high-density star clusters like the ONC may substantially differ from those in low-mass …
The properties of disks around brown dwarfs and very-low mass stars (hereafter VLMOs) provide important boundary conditions on the process of planet formation and inform us about the numbers and masses of planets than can form in this regime. We use the Herschel Space Observatory PACS spectrometer to measure the continuum and [OI] 63um line emission towards 11 VLMOs with known disks in the Taurus and Chamaeleon I star-forming regions. We fit radiative transfer models to the spectral energy distributions of these sources. Additionally, we carry out a grid of radiative transfer models run in a r…
We present spectroscopic follow-up observations of 68 red, faint candidates from our multi-epoch, multi-wavelength, previously published survey of NGC 2264. Using near-infrared spectra from VLT/KMOS, we measure spectral types and extinction for 32 young low-mass sources. We confirm 13 as brown dwarfs in NGC 2264, with spectral types between M6 and M8, corresponding to masses between 0.02 and 0.08$M_{\odot}$. These are the first spectroscopically confirmed brown dwarfs in this benchmark cluster. 19 more objects are found to be young M-type stars of NGC 2264 with masses of 0.08 to 0.3$\,M_{\odot…
We present multi-wavelength radio observations obtained with the VLA of the protoplanetary disk surrounding the young brown dwarf 2MASS J04442713+2512164 (2M0444) in the Taurus star forming region. 2M0444 is the brightest known brown dwarf disk at millimeter wavelengths, making this an ideal target to probe radio emission from a young brown dwarf. Thermal emission from dust in the disk is detected at 6.8 and 9.1 mm, whereas the 1.36 cm measured flux is dominated by ionized gas emission. We combine these data with previous observations at shorter sub-mm and mm wavelengths to test the prediction…
