We consider spherically symmetric steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, which describe equilibrium configurations of galaxies or globular clusters. If the microscopic equation of state, i.e., the dependence of the steady state on the particle energy (and angular momentum) is fixed, a one-parameter family of such states is obtained. In the polytropic case the mass of the state along such a one-parameter family is a monotone function of its radius. We prove that for the King, Woolley-Dickens, and related models this mass-radius relation takes the form of a spiral.
If the Vlasov-Poisson or Einstein-Vlasov system is linearized about an isotropic steady state, a linear operator arises the properties of which are relevant in the linear as well as nonlinear stability analysis of the given steady state. We prove that when defined on a suitable Hilbert space and equipped with the proper domain of definition this transport operator $\mathcal{T}$ is skew-adjoint, i.e., $\mathcal{T}^{\ast}=-\mathcal{T}$. In the Vlasov-Poisson case we also determine the kernel of this operator.
It is well known that steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, a widely used model in non-relativistic galactic dynamics, have negative energy. In this paper we derive the analogous property for two relativistic generalizations of the Vlasov-Poisson system: The Nordström-Vlasov system and the Einstein-Vlasov system. In the first case we show that the energy of steady states is bounded by their total rest mass; in the second case, where we also assume spherical symmetry, we prove an inequality which involves not only the energy and the rest mass, but also the central redshift. In both cases …
The stability of static solutions of the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system is studied using a Hamiltonian approach based on energy-Casimir functionals. The main result is a coercivity estimate for the quadratic part of the expansion of the natural energy-Casimir functional about an isotropic steady state. The estimate shows in a quantified way that this quadratic part is positive definite on a class of linearly dynamically accessible perturbations, provided the particle distribution of the steady state is a strictly decreasing function of the particle energy and…
We consider the two-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system to model a two-component plasma whose distribution function is constant with respect to the third space dimension. First, we show how this two-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system can be derived from the full three-dimensional system. The existence of compactly supported steady states with vanishing electric potential in a three-dimensional setting has already been investigated by A. L. Skubachevskii [15]. We show that his approach can easily be adapted to the two-dimensional system. However, our main result is to prove the existence of compac…
The time evolution of a collisionless plasma is modeled by the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system which couples the Vlasov equation (the transport equation) with the Maxwell equations of electrodynamics. In this work, the setting is two and one-half dimensional, that is, the distribution functions of the particles species are independent of the third space dimension. We consider the case that the plasma is located in an infinitely long cylinder and is influenced by an external magnetic field. We prove existence of stationary solutions and give conditions on the external magnetic field under wh…
A collisionless plasma is modeled by the Vlasov-Poisson system in three space dimensions. A fixed background of positive charge - dependant upon only velocity - is assumed. The situation in which mobile negative ions balance the positive charge as x tends to infinity is considered. Thus, the total positive charge and the total negative charge are both infinite. Smooth solutions with appropriate asymptotic behavior for large x, which were previously shown to exist locally in time, are continued globally. This is done by showing that the charge density decays at least as fast as x^{-6}. This art…
The time evolution of a two-component collisionless plasma is modeled by the Vlasov-Poisson system. In this work, the setting is two and one-half dimensional, that is, the distribution functions of the particles species are independent of the third space dimension. We consider the case that an external magnetic field is present in order to confine the plasma in a given infinitely long cylinder. After discussing global well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem, we construct stationary solutions which indeed have support away from their confinement device. Then, in the main part of this…
A collisionless plasma is modeled by the Vlasov-Poisson system in three space dimensions. A fixed background of positive charge, which is independent of time and space, is assumed. The situation in which mobile negative ions balance the positive charge as x tends to infinity is considered. Hence the total positive charge, total negative charge, and total energy are all infinite. Smooth solutions with appropriate asymptotic behavior for large x, which were previously shown to exist locally in time, are continued globally for spherically symmetric data. This is done by showing that the charge de…
As is well known from the work of R. Glassey} and J. Schaeffer, the main energy estimates which are used in global existence results for the gravitational Vlasov-Poisson system do not apply to the relativistic version of this system, and smooth solutions to the initial value problem with spherically symmetric initial data of negative energy blow up in finite time. For similar reasons the variational techniques by which Y. Guo and G. Rein obtained nonlinear stability results for the Vlasov-Poisson system do not apply in the relativistic situation. In the present paper a direct, non-variational …
Numerical evidence is given that spherically symmetric perturbations of stable spherically symmetric steady states of the gravitational Vlasov-Poisson system lead to solutions which oscillate in time. The oscillations can be periodic in time or damped. Along one-parameter families of polytropic steady states we establish an Eddington-Ritter type relation which relates the period of the oscillation to the central density of the steady state. The numerically obtained periods are used to estimate possible periods for typical elliptical galaxies.
We prove the existence of axially symmetric solutions to the Vlasov--Poisson system in a rotating setting for sufficiently small angular velocity. The constructed steady states depend on Jacobi's integral and the proof relies on an implicit function theorem for operators.
We consider a special case of the three dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system where the particles are restricted to a plane, a situation that is used in astrophysics to model extremely flattened galaxies. We prove the existence of steady states of this system. They are obtained as minimizers of an energy-Casimir functional from which fact a certain dynamical stability property is deduced. From a mathematics point of view these steady states provide examples of partially singular solutions of the three dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system.
We study the McKean-Vlasov equation \[ \partial_t \varrho= β^{-1} Δ\varrho + κ\nabla \cdot (\varrho \nabla (W \star \varrho)) \, , \] with periodic boundary conditions on the torus. We first study the global asymptotic stability of the homogeneous steady state. We then focus our attention on the stationary system, and prove the existence of nontrivial solutions branching from the homogeneous steady state, through possibly infinitely many bifurcations, under appropriate assumptions on the interaction potential. We also provide sufficient conditions for the existence of continuous and discontinu…
We prove the existence and nonlinear stability of steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the stellar dynamics case. The steady states are obtained as minimizers of an energy-Casimir functional from which fact their dynamical stability is deduced. The analysis applies to some of the well-known polytropic steady states, but it also considerably extends the class of known steady states.
Certain steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system can be characterized as minimizers of an energy-Casimir functional, and this fact implies a nonlinear stability property of such steady states. In previous investigations by Y. Guo and the author stability was obtained only with respect to spherically symmetric perturbations. In the present investigation we show how to remove this unphysical restriction.
We prove the existence and stability of flat steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, which in astrophysics are used as models of disk-like galaxies. We follow the variational approach developed by Guo and Rein for this type of problems and extend previous results of Rein. In particular, we employ a reduction procedure which relates the stability problem for the Vlasov-Poisson system to the analogous question for the Euler-Poisson system.
We prove the existence and nonlinear stability of Camm type steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case. The paper demonstrates the effectiveness of an approach to the existence and stability problem for steady states, which was used in previous work by the authors: The steady states are obtained as minimizers of an energy-Casimir functional, and from this fact their dynamical stability is deduced.
The Nordström-Vlasov system is a relativistic Lorentz invariant generalization of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case. The asymptotic behavior of solutions and the non-linear stability of steady states are investigated. It is shown that solutions of the Nordström-Vlasov system with energy grater or equal to the mass satisfy a dispersion estimate in terms of the conformal energy. When the energy is smaller than the mass, we prove existence and non-linear (orbital) stability of a class of static solutions (isotropic polytropes) against general perturbations. The proof of orbital …
The present paper completes our earlier results on nonlinear stability of stationary solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the stellar dynamics case. By minimizing the energy under a mass-Casimir constraint we construct a large class of isotropic, spherically symmetric steady states and prove their nonlinear stability against general, i. e., not necessarily symmetric perturbations. The class is optimal in a certain sense, in particular, it includes all polytropes of finite mass with decreasing dependence on the particle energy.
The kinetic motion of the stars of a galaxy is considered within the framework of a relativistic scalar theory of gravitation. This model, even though unphysical, may represent a good laboratory where to study in a rigorous, mathematical way those problems, like the influence of the gravitational radiation on the dynamics, which are still beyond our present understanding of the physical model represented by the Einstein--Vlasov system. The present paper is devoted to derive the equations of the model and to prove the existence of spherically symmetric equilibria with finite radius.
We consider steady state solutions of the massive, asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system, i.e., relativistic models of galaxies or globular clusters, and steady state solutions of the Einstein-Euler system, i.e., relativistic models of stars. Such steady states are embedded into one-parameter families parameterized by their central redshift $κ>0$. We prove their linear instability when $κ$ is sufficiently large, i.e., when they are strongly relativistic, and that the instability is driven by a growing mode. Our work confirms the scenario of dynamic instability propo…
We construct steady states of the Euler-Poisson system with a barotropic equation of state as minimizers of a suitably defined energy functional. Their minimizing property implies the non-linear stability of such states against general, i.e., not necessarily spherically symmetric perturbations. The mathematical approach is based on previous stability results for the Vlasov-Poisson system by Y. Guo and the author, exploiting the energy-Casimir technique. The analysis is conditional in the sense that it assumes the existence of solutions to the initial value problem for the Euler-Poisson system …
We consider two classes of steady states of the three-dimensional, gravitational Vlasov-Poisson system: the spherically symmetric Antonov-stable steady states (including the polytropes and the King model) and their plane symmetric analogues. We completely describe the essential spectrum of the self-adjoint operator governing the linearized dynamics in the neighborhood of these steady states. We also show that for the steady states under consideration, there exists a gap in the spectrum. We then use a version of the Birman-Schwinger principle first used by Mathur to derive a general criterion f…
We investigate spherically symmetric equilibrium states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, relevant in galactic dynamics. We recast the equations into a regular three-dimensional system of autonomous first order ordinary differential equations on a region with compact closure.Based on a dynamical systems analysis we derive theorems that guarantee that the steady state solutions have finite mass and compact support.
We study the existence of stationary solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system with finite radius and finite mass in the stellar dynamics case. So far, the existence of such solutions is known only under the assumption of spherical symmetry. Using the implicit function theorem we show that certain stationary, spherically symmetric solutions can be embedded in one parameter families of stationary, axially symmetric solutions with finite radius and finite mass. In general, these new steady states have non-vanishing average velocity field, but they can also be constructed such that their velocity fi…
Spiral structure is one of the most common structures in the nature flows. A general steady spiral solution of incompressible inviscid axisymmetric flow was obtained analytically by applying separation of variables to the 3D Euler equations. The solution, depending on 3 parameters, describes the spiral path of the fluid material element on the Bernoulli surface, whereas some new exact solutions were obtained to be bounded within the whole region. The first one is a continued typhoon-like vortex solution, where there are two intrinsic length scales. One is the radius of maximum circular velocit…
