Among the known groups of pulsating stars, $δ$ Sct stars are one of the least understood. Theoretical models do not predict the oscillation frequencies that observations reveal. Complete asteroseismic studies are necessary to improve these models and better understand the internal structure of these targets. We study the $δ$ Sct star HD 41641 with the ultimate goal of understanding its oscillation pattern. The target was simultaneously observed by the CoRoT space telescope and the HARPS high-resolution spectrograph. The photometric data set was analyzed with the software package PERIOD04, while FAMIAS was used to analyze the line profile variations. The method of spectrum synthesis was used for spectroscopically determining the fundamental atmospheric parameters and individual chemical abundances. A total of 90 different frequencies was identified and analyzed. An unambiguous identification of the azimuthal order of the surface geometry could only be provided for the dominant p-mode, which was found to be a nonradial prograde mode with m = +1. Using $T_\mathrm{eff}$ and $\log g$, we estimated the mass, radius, and evolutionary stage of HD 41641. We find HD 41641 to be a moderately rotating, slightly evolved $δ$ Sct star with subsolar overall atmospheric metal content and unexpected chemical peculiarities. HD 41641 is a pure $δ$ Sct pulsator with p-mode frequencies in the range from 10 d$^{-1}$ to 20 d$^{-1}$. This pulsating star presents chemical signatures of an Ap star and rotational modulation due to surface inhomogeneities, which we consider indirect evidence of the presence of a magnetic field.
We study the fraction of stars in and around the δ Scuti instability strip that are pulsating, using {\em Gaia} DR2 parallaxes to derive precise luminosities. We classify a sample of over 15,000 {\em Kepler} A and F stars into δ Sct and non-δ Sct stars, paying close attention to variability that could have other origins. We find that 18 per cent of the δ Sct stars have their dominant frequency above the Kepler long-cadence Nyquist frequency (periods < 1 hr), and 30 per cent have some super-Nyquist variability. We analyse the pulsator fraction as a function of effective temperature and luminosi…
Strong magnetic fields in chemically peculiar A-type (Ap) stars typically suppress low-overtone pressure modes (p modes) but allow high-overtone p modes to be driven. KIC 11296437 is the first star to show both. We obtained and analysed a Subaru spectrum, from which we show that KIC 11296437 has abundances similar to other magnetic Ap stars, and we estimate a mean magnetic field modulus of $2.8\pm0.5$ kG. The same spectrum rules out a double-lined spectroscopic binary, and we use other techniques to rule out binarity over a wide parameter space, so the two pulsation types originate in one $δ$ …
In this paper, we present TESS photometry and high-resolution spectra of the short-period Algol EW Boo. We obtained double-lined radial velocities (RVs) from the time-series spectra and measured the effective temperature of the primary star as $T_{\rm{eff,1}}$ = 8560 $\pm$ 118 K. For the orbital period study, we collected all times of minima available for over the last 30 years. It was found that the eclipse timing variation of the system could be represented by a periodic oscillation of 17.6 $\pm$ 0.3 years with a semi-amplitude of 0.0041 $\pm$ 0.0001 d. The orbital and physical parameters we…

Searching for magnetic fields in pulsating A-type stars: the discovery of a strong field in the probable delta Sct star HD340577 and a null result for the gamma Dor star HR8799
CO~Cam (TIC 160268882) is the second ``single-sided pulsator'' to be discovered. These are stars where one hemisphere pulsates with a significantly higher amplitude than the other side of the star. CO~Cam is a binary star comprised of an Am $δ$~Sct primary star with $T_{\rm eff} = 7070 \pm 150$\,K, and a spectroscopically undetected G main-sequence secondary star. The dominant pulsating side of the primary star is centred on the L$_1$ point. We have modelled the spectral energy distribution combined with radial velocities, and independently the {\em TESS} light curve combined with radial veloc…
We present the first evidence on the $δ$~Sct type pulsations of the primary components of three eclipsing binaries IQ CMa, AW Men and W Vol in the TESS field. A comprehensive investigation of the binary properties is conducted. The light curves of the systems are analysed and the frequency analyses are performed to residual data. The systems are compared to the binaries of the same morphological types, and the primaries are examined in contrast to the $δ$~Sct type pulsators. The results show that the systems are oscillating eclipsing Algol-type systems.
We report the discovery of a new eclipsing EL CVn-type binary, consisting of a $δ$ Sct-type pulsator and a thermally bloated low-mass pre-He white dwarf (WD). Spectroscopy and time-series $BV$ photometry of V1224 Cas were carried out. The spectroscopy reveals a spectral type of A3 for the star. Light-curve modelling indicate that V1224 Cas is a short-period detached system containing a possible low-mass WD with an effective temperature of about 9516 K. Based on the effective temperature and the surface gravity of the A-type primary star from the spectroscopic results, the absolute parameters o…
Confirmation of simultaneous p and g mode excitation in HD 8801 and Gamma Peg from time-resolved multicolour photometry of six candidate "hybrid" pulsators
The results of our six year systematic observational survey on candidate eclipsing binaries with a delta Sct component are briefly presented. A new catalogue for this kind of systems as well as the properties of their delta Sct members are also presented. The comparison between the components-pulsators and the single delta Sct stars shows that both the evolution and the pulsating properties differ significantly. Finally, we introduce the new era of studying stellar pulsations using high accuracy data from Kepler mission and emphasizing the great opportunities that are now opened for a deep kno…
The multiscale entropy assesses the complexity of a signal across different timescales. It originates from the biomedical domain and was recently successfully used to characterize light curves as part of a supervised machine learning framework to classify stellar variability. We explore the behavior of the multiscale entropy in detail by studying its algorithmic properties in a stellar variability context and by linking it with traditional astronomical time series analysis methods. We subsequently use the multiscale entropy as the basis for an interpretable clustering framework that can distin…
Amongst the intermediate mass pulsating stars known as $δ$ Sct stars is a subset of high-amplitude and predominantly radial-mode pulsators known as high-amplitude $δ$ Sct (HADS) stars. From more than 2000 $δ$ Sct stars observed by the Kepler space mission, only two HADS stars were detected. We investigate the more perplexing of these two HADS stars, KIC5950759. We study its variability using ground- and space-based photometry, determine its atmospheric parameters from spectroscopy and perform asteroseismic modelling to constrain its mass and evolutionary stage. From spectroscopy, we find that …
{KIC~8975515 is a \emph{Kepler} double-lined spectroscopic binary system with hybrid pulsations. Two components have similar atmospheric properties (T$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 7400~K), and one of them is a fast rotator ($v\sin i = 162$ versus 32 km/s). Our aim is to study the \emph {Kepler} light curve in great detail in order to determine the frequencies of the pulsations, to search for regular spacing patterns in the Fourier spectrum, if any, and to discuss their origin in the context of binarity and fast rotation. In this paper, we study the properties of the stellar pulsations based on a careful…
The presence of A/F-type {\it Kepler} hybrid stars extending across the entire $δ$ Sct-$γ$ Dor instability strips and beyond remains largely unexplained. In order to better understand these particular stars, we performed a multi-epoch spectroscopic study of 49 candidate A/F-type hybrid stars and one cool(er) hybrid object detected by the {\it Kepler} mission. We determined a lower limit of 27 % for the multiplicity fraction. For six spectroscopic systems, we also reported long-term variations of the time delays. For four systems, the time delay variations are fully coherent with those of the r…
The semi-detached eclipsing binary system, TT Hor, has a $δ$ Sct primary component (accretor) accreting mass from the secondary star (donor). We fit an eclipsing binary model from V, B and I photometry combined with spectroscopy using PHOEBE. Radial velocity variations of the center of mass of TT Hor AB over 2 years suggest the presence of a wide companion, consistent with a Kozai-Lidov resonance formation process for TT Hor AB. Evolutionary models computed with MESA give the initial mass of the donor as $\approx$1.6 $M_{\odot}$ and that of the accretor as $\approx$1.3 $M_{\odot}$. The initial…
We consider the impact of stochastic perturbations on otherwise coherent oscillations of classical pulsators. The resulting dynamics are modelled by a driven damped harmonic oscillator subject to either an external or an internal forcing and white noise velocity fluctuations. We characterize the phase and relative amplitude variations using analytical and numerical tools. When the forcing is internal the phase variation displays a random walk behaviour and a red noise power spectrum with a ragged erratic appearance. We determine the dependence of the root mean square phase and relative amplitu…
We study the $δ$ Scuti -- red giant binary KIC9773821, the first double-pulsator binary of its kind. It was observed by \textit{Kepler} during its four-year mission. Our aims are to ascertain whether the system is bound, rather than a chance alignment, and to identify the evolutionary state of the red giant via asteroseismology. An extension of these aims is to determine a dynamical mass and an age prior for a $δ$ Sct star, which may permit mode identification via further asteroseismic modelling. We determine spectroscopic parameters and radial velocities (RVs) for the red giant component usin…
The field of the globular cluster M22 (NGC 6656) was monitored between 2000 and 2008 in a search for variable stars. $BV$ light curves were obtained for 359 periodic, likely periodic, and long-term variables, 238 of which are new detections. Thirty nine newly detected variables, and 63 previously known ones are members or likely members of the cluster, including 20 SX Phe, 10 RRab and 16 RRc-type pulsators, one BL Her-type pulsator, 21 contact binaries, and 9 detached or semi-detached eclipsing binaries. The most interesting among the identified objects are V112 - a bright multimode SX Phe pul…
We present the largest collection of delta Scuti-type stars in the Milky Way. Together with the recently published OGLE collection of delta Sct variables in the inner Galactic bulge, our sample consists of 24 488 objects distributed along the Milky Way plane, over galactic longitudes ranging from about -170 deg to +60 deg. The collection data include the I- and V-band time-series photometry collected since 1997 during the OGLE-II, OGLE-III, and OGLE-IV surveys. We show the on-sky distribution of delta Sct stars in the Galactic bulge and disk, discuss their period, luminosity and amplitude dist…
We present the results of our analysis of KIC 4150611 (HD 181469) - an interesting, bright quintuple system that includes a hybrid $δ$ Sct/$γ$ Dor pulsator. Four periods of eclipses - 94.2, 8.65, 1.52 and 1.43 d - have been observed by the Kepler satellite, and three point sources (A, B, and C) are seen in high angular resolution images. From spectroscopic observations made with the HIDES spectrograph attached to the 1.88-m telescope of the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO), for the first time we calculated radial velocities (RVs) of the component B - a pair of G-type stars - and combine…
Eclipsing systems are essential objects for understanding the properties of stars and stellar systems. Eclipsing systems with pulsating components are furthermore advantageous because they provide accurate constraints on the component properties, as well as a complementary method for pulsation mode determination, crucial for precise asteroseismology. The outcome of space missions aiming at delivering high-accuracy light curves for many thousands of stars in search of planetary systems has also generated new insights in the field of variable stars and revived the interest of binary systems in g…
Looking for a connection between the Am phenomenon and hybrid delta Sct - gamma Dor pulsation: a determination of the fundamental parameters and abundances of HD 114839 and BD +18 4914
We report the classification of 24 puzzling short-period variable stars located in OGLE-IV Galactic bulge fields. The stars are low-amplitude (<0.05 mag) multi-periodic objects with dominant periods between 22 and 54 min whose type could not have been unambiguously established based on photometry only. A low-resolution spectroscopic follow-up has shown that all the objects are main sequence A/F-type stars. Thus, all the variables are delta Sct-type pulsators. We have added them to the OGLE-IV Collection of Variable Stars.
WASP-33 is one of the few $δ$ Sct stars with a known planetary companion. By analyzing the stellar oscillations, we search for possible star-planet interactions in the pattern of the pulsation. We made use of the Transit and Light Curve Modeller (TLCM) to solve the light curve from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We include gravity darkening into our analysis. The stellar oscillation pattern of WASP-33 clearly shows signs of several tidally perturbed modes. We find that there are peaks in the frequency spectrum that are at or near the $3$rd, $12$th and $25$th orbital harmonic…
We present a collection of 10 111 genuine delta Sct-type pulsating variable stars detected in the OGLE-IV Galactic bulge fields. In this sample, 9835 variables are new discoveries. For most of the stars photometric data cover the whole decade 2010-2019. We illustrate a huge variety of light curve shapes of delta Sct variables. Long-term observations have allowed us to spot objects with evident period, amplitude, and mean brightness variations. Our analysis indicates that about 28% of the stars are single-mode pulsators. Fourteen delta Sct stars show additional eclipsing or ellipsoidal binary m…
AI Hya has been known as an eclipsing binary with a monoperiodic $δ$ Sct pulsator. We present the results from its {\it TESS} photometry observed during Sector 7. Including our five minimum epochs, the eclipse timing diagram displays the apsidal motion with a rate of $\dotω$ = 0.075$\pm$0.031 deg year$^{-1}$, which corresponds to an apsidal period of U = 4800$\pm$2000 years. The binary star model represents that the smaller, less massive primary component is 427 K hotter than the pulsating secondary, and our distance of 612$\pm$36 pc is in good agreement with the $Gaia$ distance of 644$\pm$26 …
We analyse TESS light curves for 70 southern $λ$ Boo stars to identify binaries and to determine which of them pulsate as $δ$ Scuti stars. We find two heartbeat stars and two eclipsing binaries among the sample. We calculate that 81 percent of $λ$ Boo stars pulsate as $δ$ Sct variables, which is about twice that of normal stars over the same parameter space. We determine the temperatures and luminosities of the $λ$ Boo stars from photometry and Gaia DR2 parallaxes. A subset of 40 $λ$ Boo stars have 2-min TESS data, reliable temperatures and luminosities, and $δ$ Sct pulsation. We use Petersen …
We present a survey of variable stars detected in K2 Campaign 13 within the massive intermediate age ($\sim1$ Gyr) open cluster NGC 1817. We identify a complete sample of 44 red clump stars in the cluster, and have measured asteroseismic quantities ($ν_{\rm max}$ and/or $Δν$) for 29 of them. Five stars showed suppressed dipole modes, and the occurrence rates indicate that mode suppression is unaffected by evolution through core helium burning. A subset of the giants in NGC 1817 (and in the similarly aged cluster NGC 6811) have $ν_{\rm max}$ and $Δν$ values at or near the maximum observed for c…
Large-scale magnetic fields at the surface of massive stars do not only influence the outer-most layers of the star, but also have consequences for the deep interior, only observationally accessible through asteroseismology. We performed a detailed characterization of the dipolar magnetic field at the surface of the B3.5V star HD 43317, a SPB/$β$ Cep hybrid pulsator, by studying the rotationally modulated magnetic field of archival and new Narval spectropolarimetry. Additionally, we employed a grid-based approach to compare the Zeeman signatures with model profiles. By studying the rotational …
