An atlas of spectra of the unique high luminosity objects MWC 314 and IRC+10420 taken with the CCD echelle spectrograph (R=15000) at the prime focus of the 6-m telescope of SAO is presented. About 320 emission and absorption features of stellar, circumstellar and interstellar nature are identified in the interval between 4790 and 7520 Å. Their relative intensities and radial velocities are given and the distinctions of their profiles are discussed.
Most runaway OB stars, like the majority of massive stars residing in their parent clusters, go through the red supergiant (RSG) phase during their lifetimes. Nonetheless, although many dozens of massive runaways were found to be associated with bow shocks, only two RSG bow-shock-producing stars, Betelgeuse and μCep, are known to date. In this paper, we report the discovery of an arc-like nebula around the late M-type star IRC-10414 using the SuperCOSMOS H-alpha Survey. Our spectroscopic follow-up of IRC-10414 with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) showed that it is a M7 supergiant, …
In this Letter, we explore the hypothesis that the smooth appearance of bow shocks around some red supergiants (RSGs) might be caused by the ionization of their winds by external sources of radiation. Our numerical simulations of the bow shock generated by IRC-10414 (the first-ever RSG with an optically detected bow shock) show that the ionization of the wind results in its acceleration by a factor of two, which reduces the difference between the wind and space velocities of the star and makes the contact discontinuity of the bow shock stable for a range of stellar space velocities and mass-lo…
IRC +10420 is one of the few known massive stars in rapid transition from the Red Supergiant phase to the Wolf-Rayet or Luminous Blue Variable phase. The star has an ionised wind and using the Br gamma hydrogen recombination emission we assess the mass-loss on spatial scales of order 1 au. We present new VLT Interferometer AMBER data which are combined with all other AMBER data in the literature. The final dataset covers a position angle range of 180 degrees and baselines up to 110 meters. The spectrally dispersed visibilities, differential phases and line flux are conjointly analyzed and mode…
Based on high-spectral-resolution observations (R=60000) performed with the 6-m BTA telescope in combination with the echelle spectrograph NES, we have studied the optical spectra of three A-type supergiants: a peculiar supergiant 3 Pup, a post-AGB star BD+48 1220, and a massive $α$ Cyg, which belong to essentially different stages of evolution. A spectral atlas for these stars is prepared in the wavelength interval of 3920 to 6720 Å.
Near-infrared (2.5-5.0$\,μ$m) low-resolution ($λ/Δλ{\sim}100$) spectra of 72 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) were obtained with the Infrared Camera (IRC) in the post-helium phase. The IRC, equipped with a $1'{\times}1'$ window for spectroscopy of a point source, was capable of obtaining near-infrared spectra in a slit-less mode without any flux loss due to a slit. The spectra show emission features including hydrogen recombination lines and the 3.3-3.5$\,μ$m hydrocarbon features. The intensity and equivalent width of the emission features were measured by spectral fitting. We made a catalog p…
We present an atlas composed of more than 1500 spectra of late-type stars (spectral types from G to M) observed simultaneously in the optical and calcium triplet spectral ranges. These spectra were obtained as part of a survey to search for cool supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds and were taken over four epochs. We provide the spectral and luminosity classification for each spectrum (71% are supergiants, 13% are giants or luminous giants, 4% are carbon or S stars, and the remaining 12% are foreground stars of lesser luminosities). We also provide a detailed guide for the spectral classificat…
Red supergiant stars (RSGs) and yellow hypergiant stars (YHGs) are believed to be the high-mass counterparts of stars in the AGB and early post-AGB phases. We study the mass-loss in the post main-sequence evolution of massive stars, through the properties of their envelopes in the intermediate and warm gas layers. These are the regions where the acceleration of the gas takes place and the most recent mass-loss episodes can be seen. We used the HIFI instrument on-board the Herschel Space Observatory to observe sub-mm and FIR transitions of CO, water, and their isotopologues in a sample of two R…
We performed a mid-infrared imaging survey of evolved stars in order to study the dust distribution in circumstellar envelopes around these objects and to better understand the mass-loss mechanism responsible for the formation of these envelopes. During this survey, we resolved for the first time the circumstellar environment of IRAS 17163-3907 (hereinafter IRAS17163), which is one of the brightest objects in the mid-infrared sky, but is surprisingly not well studied. Our aim is to determine the evolutionary status of IRAS 17163 and study its circumstellar environment in order to understand it…
We present the Spitzer Atlas of Stellar Spectra (SASS), which includes 159 stellar spectra (5 to 32 mic; R~100) taken with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. This Atlas gathers representative spectra of a broad section of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, intended to serve as a general stellar spectral reference in the mid-infrared. It includes stars from all luminosity classes, as well as Wolf-Rayet (WR) objects. Furthermore, it includes some objects of intrinsic interest, like blue stragglers and certain pulsating variables. All the spectra have been uniformly reduced, …
This study presents elemental abundances of the early A-type supergiant HD 80057 and the late A-type supergiant HD80404. High resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectra published by the UVES Paranal Observatory Project (Bagnulo et al., 2003) were analysed to compute their elemental abundances using ATLAS9 (Kurucz, 1993, 2005; Sbordone et al., 2004). In our analysis we assumed local thermodynamic equilibrium. The atmospheric parameters of HD 80057 used in this study are from Firnstein & Przybilla (2012), and that of HD80404 are derived from spectral energy distribution, ionization equili…

We have determined new statistical relations to estimate the fundamental atmospheric parameters of effective temperature and surface gravity, using MK spectral classification, and vice versa. The relations were constructed based on the published calibration tables (for main sequence stars) and observational data from stellar spectral atlases (for giants and supergiants). These new relations were applied to field giants with known atmospheric parameters, and the results of the comparison of our estimations with available spectral classification had been quite satisfactory.
In this paper we present a spectral atlas covering the wavelength interval 930--1188A for O2--O9.5 stars using Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer archival data. The stars selected for the atlas were drawn from three populations: Galactic main sequence (class III-V) stars, supergiants, and main sequence stars in the Magellanic Clouds, which have low metallicities. For each of these stars we have prepared FITS files comprised of paris of merged spectra for user access via the Multi-Mission Archives at Space Telescope. We chose spectra from the first population with spectral types O4, O5, O6,…
We present 52-93 micron spectra, obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope, of luminous compact far-IR sources in the SMC. These comprise 9 Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), the compact HII region N81 and a similar object within N84, and two red supergiants (RSGs). The spectra of the sources in N81 (of which we also show the ISO-LWS spectrum between 50-170 micron) and N84 both display strong [OI] 63-micron and [OIII] 88-micron fine-structure line emission. We attribute these lines to strong shocks and photo-ionized gas, respectively, in a ``champagne flow'' scenario. The nitrogen content of these …
[abridged] We present 52-93 micron spectra obtained with Spitzer in the MIPS-SED mode, of a representative sample of luminous compact far-IR sources in the LMC. These include carbon stars, OH/IR AGB stars, post-AGB objects and PNe, RCrB-type star HV2671, OH/IR red supergiants WOHG064 and IRAS05280-6910, B[e] stars IRAS04530-6916, R66 and R126, Wolf-Rayet star Brey3a, Luminous Blue Variable R71, supernova remnant N49, a large number of young stellar objects, compact HII regions and molecular cores, and a background galaxy (z~0.175). We use the spectra to constrain the presence and temperature o…
