A periodically driven rotor is a prototypical model that exhibits a transition to chaos in the classical regime and dynamical localization (related to Anderson localization) in the quantum regime. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. B 94, 085120 (2016)], A. C. Keser et al. considered a many-body generalization of coupled quantum kicked rotors, and showed that in the special integrable linear case, dynamical localization survives interactions. By analogy with many-body localization, the phenomenon was dubbed dynamical many-body localization. In the present work, we study nonintegrable models of single and coupled quantum relativistic kicked rotors (QRKRs) that bridge the gap between the conventional quadratic rotors and the integrable linear models. For a single QRKR, we supplement the recent analysis of the angular-momentum-space dynamics with a study of the spin dynamics. Our analysis of two and three coupled QRKRs along with the proved localization in the many-body linear model indicate that dynamical localization exists in few-body systems. Moreover, the relation between QRKR and linear rotor models implies that dynamical many-body localization can exist in generic, nonintegrable many-body systems. And localization can generally result from a complicated interplay between Anderson mechanism and limiting integrability, since the many-body linear model is a high-angular-momentum limit of many-body QRKRs. We also analyze the dynamics of two coupled QRKRs in the highly unusual superballistic regime and find that the resonance conditions are relaxed due to interactions. Finally, we propose experimental realizations of the QRKR model in cold atoms in optical lattices.
We investigate Anderson localization in a three dimensional (3d) kicked rotor. By a finite size scaling analysis we have identified a mobility edge for a certain value of the kicking strength $k = k_c$. For $k > k_c$ dynamical localization does not occur, all eigenstates are delocalized and the spectral correlations are well described by Wigner-Dyson statistics. This can be understood by mapping the kicked rotor problem onto a 3d Anderson model (AM) where a band of metallic states exists for sufficiently weak disorder. Around the critical region $k \approx k_c$ we have carried out a detailed s…
The quantum motion of $N$ coupled kicked rotors is mapped to an interacting $N$-particle Anderson-Aubry-Andr$é$ tight-binding problem supporting many-body localised (MBL) phases. Interactions in configuration space are known to be insufficient for destroying Anderson localisation in a system in the MBL phase. The mapping we establish here predicts that a similar effect takes place in momentum space and determines the quantum dynamics of the coupled kicked rotors. Due to the boundedness of the Floquet quasi-energy spectrum there exists limitations on the interacting lattice models that can be m…
We investigate the possibility of an Anderson type transition in the quantum kicked rotor with a smooth potential due to dynamical localization of the wavefunctions. Our results show the typical characteristics of a critical behavior i.e multifractal eigenfunctions and a scale-invariant level-statistics at a critical kicking strength which classically corresponds to a mixed regime. This indicates the existence of a localization to delocalization transition in the quantum kicked rotor. Our study also reveals the possibility of other type of transitions in the quantum kicked rotor, with a kickin…
We show that quantum wavepackets exhibit a sharp macroscopic peak as they spread in the vicinity of the critical point of the Anderson transition. The peak gives a direct access to the mutifractal properties of the wavefunctions and specifically to the multifractal dimension $d\_2$. Our analysis is based on an experimentally realizable setup, the quantum kicked rotor with quasi-periodic temporal driving, an effectively 3-dimensional disordered system recently exploited to explore the physics of the Anderson transition with cold atoms.
We study the fate of dynamical localization of two quantum kicked rotors with contact interaction. This interaction mimics experimental realizations with ultracold atomic gases. Dynamical localization for a single rotor takes place in momentum space. The contact interaction affects the evolution of the relative momentum $k$ of a pair of interacting rotors in a non-analytic way. Consequently the evolution operator $U$ is exciting large relative momenta with amplitudes which decay only as a power law $1/k^4$. This is in contrast to the center-of-mass momentum $K$ for which the amplitudes excited…
We study the dynamics of Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the quasiperiodic kicked rotor. In the weakly interacting regime, the condensate is stable and both the condensate and the excitations undergo a phase transition from a quasilocalized to a diffusive regime. The corresponding critical exponents are identical for the condensate and the excitations, and compare very well with the value $ν\approx1.6$ for non-interacting particles.
The dynamics of chaotic Hamiltonian systems such as the kicked rotor continues to guide our understanding of transport and localization processes. The localized states of the quantum kicked rotor decay due to decoherence effects if subjected to stationary noise. The associated quantum diffusion increases monotonically as a function of a parameter characterising the noise distribution. In this work, for the Levy kicked atom-optics rotor, it is experimentally shown that by tuning a parameter characterizing the Levy distribution, quantum diffusion displays non-monotonic behaviour. The parameters …
Dimension 2 is expected to be the lower critical dimension for Anderson localization in a time reversal-invariant disordered quantum system. Using an atomic quasiperiodic kicked rotor -- equivalent to a two-dimensional Anderson-like model -- we experimentally study Anderson localization in dimension 2 and we observe localized wavefunction dynamics. We also show that the localization length depends exponentially on the disorder strength and anisotropy and is in quantitative agreement with the predictions of the self-consistent theory for the 2D Anderson localization.
We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the quasiperiodic kicked rotor described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with periodic boundary conditions. As the interactions are increased, Bogoliubov excitations appear and deplete the condensate; we characterize this instability by considering the population of the first Bogoliubov mode, and show that it does not prevent, for small enough interaction strengths, the observation of the transition. However, the predicted subdiffusive behavior is not observed in the stable region. For higher interaction strengths, the condensate may be str…
We report a numerical analysis of the Anderson transition in a quantum-chaotic system, the quasiperiodic kicked rotor with three incommensurate frequencies. It is shown that this dynamical system exhibits the same critical phenomena as the truly random 3D-Anderson model. By taking proper account of systematic corrections to one-parameter scaling, the universality of the critical exponent is demonstrated. Our result $ν= 1.59 \pm 0.01$ is in perfect agreement with the value found for the Anderson model.
Using the multilayer convolutional neural network (CNN), we can detect the quantum phases in random electron systems, and phase diagrams of two and higher dimensional Anderson transitions and quantum percolations as well as disordered topological systems have been obtained. Here, instead of using CNN to analyze the wave functions, we analyze the dynamics of wave packets via long short-term memory network (LSTM). We adopt the quasi-periodic quantum kicked rotors, which simulate the three and four dimensional Anderson transitions. By supervised training, we let LSTM extract the features of the t…
We study experimentally a quantum kicked rotor with broken parity symmetry, supporting a ratchet effect due to the presence of a classical accelerator mode. We show that the short-time dynamics is very well described by the classical dynamics, characterized by a strongly asymmetric momentum distribution with directed motion on one side, and an anomalous diffusion on the other. At longer times, quantum effects lead to dynamical localization, causing an asymptotic resymmetrization of the wave function.
In a recent comment [cond-mat/9703106] Casati, Izrailev and Sokolov claim that our analysis of the quantum kicked rotor [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 4536 (1996), chao-dyn/9609014] seems to miss an important aspect, viz. the difference in behavior between rational and irrational values of the parameter T = tau/4pi (tau being the time between kicks). The fact of the matter is that our approach does depend very sensitively on the number theoretical properties of T. In our reply we show how the 'degree of rationality' is related to the topological aspects of our theory and point out the phenomenological …
The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) driven by $d$ incommensurate frequencies realizes the universality class of $d$-dimensional disordered metals. For $d>3$, the system exhibits an Anderson metal-insulator transition which has been observed within the framework of an atom optics realization. However, the absence of genuine randomness in the QKR reflects in critical phenomena beyond those of the Anderson universality class. Specifically, the system shows strong sensitivity to the algebraic properties of its effective Planck constant $\tilde h \equiv 4π/q$. For integer $q$, the system may be in a glo…
Periodic drives are a common tool to control physical systems, but have a limited applicability because time-dependent drives generically lead to heating. How to prevent the heating is a fundamental question with important practical implications. We address this question by analyzing a chain of coupled kicked rotors, and find two situations in which the heating rate can be arbitrarily small: (i) linear stability, for initial conditions close to a fixed point, and (ii) marginal localization, for drives with large frequencies and small amplitudes. In both cases, we find that the dynamics shows u…
The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) model is a prototypical system in the research of quantum chaos. In a spin-$1/2$ QKR, tuning the effective Planck parameter realizes a series of transitions between dynamical localization phases, which closely resembles the integer quantum Hall (IQH) effect and the plateau transitions. In this work, we devise and apply the finite-size scaling analysis to the transitions in the spin-$1/2$ QKR model. We obtain an estimate of the critical exponent at the transition point, $ν=2.62(9)$, which is consistent with the IQH plateau transition universality class. We also gi…
We study the combined effect of quasiperiodic disorder, driven and interaction in the periodically kicked Aubry-André model. In the non-interacting limit, by analyzing the quasienergy spectrum statistics, we verify the existence of a dynamical localization transition in the high-frequency region, whereas the spectrum statistics becomes intricate in the low-frequency region due to the emergence of the extended/localized-to-multifractal edges in the quasienergy spectrum, which separate the multifractal states from the extended (localized) states. When the interaction is introduced, we find the p…
We rigorously analyse the correspondence between the one-dimensional standard Anderson model and a related classical system, the `kicked oscillator' with noisy frequency. We show that the Anderson localization corresponds to a parametric instability of the oscillator, with the localization length determined by an increment of the exponential growth of the energy. Analytical expression for a weak disorder is obtained, which is valid both inside the energy band and at the band edge.

We study numerically the frequency modulated kicked nonlinear rotator with effective dimension $d=1,2,3,4$. We follow the time evolution of the model up to $10^9$ kicks and determine the exponent $α$ of subdiffusive spreading which changes from $0.35$ to $0.5$ when the dimension changes from $d=1$ to $4$. All results are obtained in a regime of relatively strong Anderson localization well below the Anderson transition point existing for $d=3,4$. We explain that this variation of the exponent is different from the usual $d-$dimensional Anderson models with local nonlinearity where $α$ drops wit…
We study the dynamics of cold atoms subjected to {\em pairs} of closely time-spaced $δ$-kicks from standing waves of light. The classical phase space of this system is partitioned into momentum cells separated by trapping regions. In a certain range of parameters it is shown that the classical motion is well described by a process of anomalous diffusion. We investigate in detail the impact of the underlying classical anomalous diffusion on the quantum dynamics with special emphasis on the phenomenon of dynamical localization. Based on the study of the quantum density of probability, its second…
The understanding of how classical dynamics can emerge in closed quantum systems is a problem of fundamental importance. Remarkably, while classical behavior usually arises from coupling to thermal fluctuations or random spectral noise, it may also be an innate property of certain isolated, periodically driven quantum systems. Here, we experimentally realize the simplest such system, consisting of two coupled, kicked quantum rotors, by subjecting a coherent atomic matter wave to two periodically pulsed, incommensurate optical lattices. Momentum transport in this system is found to be radically…
Quantum kicked rotor was recently realized in experiments with cold atomic gases and standing optical waves. As predicted, it exhibits dynamical localization in the momentum space. Here we consider the weak localization regime concentrating on the Ehrenfest time scale. The later accounts for the spread-time of a minimal wavepacket and is proportional to the logarithm of the Planck constant. We show that the onset of the dynamical localization is essentially delayed by four Ehrenfest times and give quantitative predictions suitable for an experimental verification.
The kicked rotor system is a textbook example of how classical and quantum dynamics can drastically differ. The energy of a classical particle confined to a ring and kicked periodically will increase linearly in time whereas in the quantum version the energy saturates after a finite number of kicks. The quantum system undergoes Anderson localization in the angular-momentum space. Conventional wisdom says that in a many-particle system with short-range interactions the localization will be destroyed due to the coupling of widely separated momentum states. Here we provide evidence that for an in…
We numerically study the single particle localization and delocalization phenomena of an initially localized wave packet in the kicked Harper model (KHM) and Harper model subjected to quasi-periodic perturbation composed of $M-$modes. Both models are localized in the monochromatically perturbed case $M=1$. KHM shows localization-delocalization transition (LDT) above $M\geq2$ as increase of the perturbation strength $\eps$. In contrast, in a time-continuous Harper model with the perturbation, it is confirmed that the localization persists for $M=2$ and the LDT occurs for $M\geq 3$. Furthermore,…
We investigate dynamical tunneling in many dimensional systems using a quasi-periodically modulated kicked rotor, and find that the tunneling rate from the torus to the chaotic region is drastically enhanced when the chaotic states become delocalized as a result of the Anderson transition. This result strongly suggests that amphibious states, which were discovered for a one-dimensional kicked rotor with transporting islands [L. Hufnagel et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 154101 (2002)], quite commonly appear in many dimensional systems.
Conventionally the mobility edge (ME) separating extended states from localized ones is a central concept in understanding Anderson localization transition. The critical state, being delocalized and non-ergodic, is a third type of fundamental state that is different from both the extended and localized states. Here we study the localization phenomena in a one dimensional periodically kicked quasiperiodic optical Raman lattice by using fractal dimensions. We show a rich phase diagram including the pure extended, critical and localized phases in the high frequency regime, the MEs separating the …
The quantum kicked rotor is well-known to display dynamical localization in the non-interacting limit. In the interacting case, while the mean-field (Gross-Pitaevskii) approximation displays a destruction of dynamical localization, its fate remains debated beyond mean-field. Here we study the kicked Lieb-Liniger model in the few-body limit. We show that for any interaction strength, two kicked interacting bosons always dynamically localize, in the sense that the energy of the system saturates at long time. However, contrary to the non-interacting limit, the momentum distribution $Π(k)$ of the …
