Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ is a double perovskite proposed to be at the border between two and three dimensional magnetism, with a square lattice of $S=\frac{1}{2}$ Cu$^{2+}$ ions. We have used inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the spin wave excitations of the system, to find out how they evolve as a function of temperature, as well as to obtain information about the magnetic exchange interactions. We observed well defined dispersive spin wave modes at $6$~K, which partially survive above the magnetic ordering temperature, $T_N=24$~K. Linear spin wave theory is used to determine the exchange interactions revealing them to be highly two-dimensional in nature. Density functional theory calculations are presented supporting this experimental finding, which is in contrast to a previous \emph{ab-initio} study of the magnetic interactions. Our analysis confirms that not the nearest neighbour, but the next nearest neighbour interactions in the tetragonal $ab$ plane are the strongest. Low incident energy measurements reveal the opening of a $0.6(1)$~meV gap below $T_N$, which suggests the presence of a very weak single ion anisotropy term in the form of an easy axis along $\hat{\mathbf{a}}$.

The synthesis and physical properties of the double perovskite (DP) compound Ba2CdReO6 with the 5d1 electronic configuration are reported. Three successive phases originating from a spin-orbit-entangled Jeff = 3/2 state, confirmed by the reduced effective magnetic moment of 0.72 μB, were observed upon cooling. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed a structural transition from a high-temperature cubic structure to a low-temperature tetragonal structure at Ts = 170 K, below which the Jeff = 3/2 state was preserved. Magnetization, heat capacity, and thermal expansion measurements showed two mor…
High purity polycrystalline Na0.5La0.5RuO3 was synthesized by a solid state method, and its properties were studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and resistivity measurements. We find it to be a tetragonal perovskite, in contrast to an earlier report, with random La/Na mixing. With a Curie-Weiss temperature of -231 K and effective moment of 2.74 uB/mol-Ru, there is no magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K. A broad hump at 1.4 K in the heat capacity, however, indicates the presence of a glassy magnetic transition, which we attribute to the influence of the random distribution of Na and La…
Structural and magnetic transitions in a double perovskite hosting 5d1 Re ions are discussed on the basis of recently published high-resolution x-ray diffraction patterns [D. Hirai, et al., Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 022063(R) (2020)]. A reported structural transition below room temperature, from cubic to tetragonal symmetry, appears not to be driven by T2g-type quadrupoles, as suggested. A magnetic motif at lower temperature is shown to be composed of two order parameters, associated with propagation vectors k = (0, 0, 1) and k = (0, 0, 0). Findings from our studies, for structural and magnetic prope…
Pressure induced phase transitions of MIAgIIF3 perovskites where M = K, Rb, Cs, have been predicted theoretically for the first time for pressures up to 100 GPa. The sequence of phase transitions for M = K and Rb consists of an orthorhombic to monoclinic and back to orthorhombic transition, associated with progressive bending of infinite chains of corner sharing [AgF6]4 minus octahedra and their mutual approaching via secondary Ag...F contacts. In stark contrast, only a single phase transition i.e. tetragonal to triclinic, is predicted for CsAgF3, associated with substantial deformation of the…
We used a combination of polarized Raman spectroscopy and spin wave calculations to study magnetic excitations in the strong spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) bilayer perovskite antiferromagnet $Sr_3Ir_2O_7$. We observed two broad Raman features at ~ 800 $cm^{-1}$ and ~ 1400 $cm^{-1}$ arising from magnetic excitations. Unconventionally, the ~ 800 $cm^{-1}$ feature is fully symmetric ($A_{1g}$) with respect to the underlying tetragonal ($D_{4h}$) crystal lattice which, together with its broad line shape, definitively rules out the possibility of a single magnon excitation as its origin. In contrast, the…
We use temperature dependent neutron powder diffraction (NPD) to investigate the structural changes and magnetic interactions in double perovskite Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0.4 and 0.6). A structural phase transition from tetragonal ($I4/m$) to monoclinic ($P2_1/n$) is observed between $x=$ 0.4 and 0.6 samples. Interestingly, temperature evolution of the unit cell parameters follow the Grüneisen approximation, and the analysis suggest the isotropic thermal expansion in case of the $x=$ 0.4 sample, whereas the $x=$ 0.6 sample shows the anisotropy where the thermal expansion along the $c$-…
