We develop a rigid multiblob method for numerically solving the mobility problem for suspensions of passive and active rigid particles of complex shape in Stokes flow in unconfined, partially confined, and fully confined geometries. As in a number of existing methods, we discretize rigid bodies using a collection of minimally-resolved spherical blobs constrained to move as a rigid body, to arrive at a potentially large linear system of equations for the unknown Lagrange multipliers and rigid-body motions. Here we develop a block-diagonal preconditioner for this linear system and show that a standard Krylov solver converges in a modest number of iterations that is essentially independent of the number of particles. For unbounded suspensions and suspensions sedimented against a single no-slip boundary, we rely on existing analytical expressions for the Rotne-Prager tensor combined with a fast multipole method or a direct summation on a Graphical Processing Unit to obtain an simple yet efficient and scalable implementation. For fully confined domains, such as periodic suspensions or suspensions confined in slit and square channels, we extend a recently-developed rigid-body immersed boundary method to suspensions of freely-moving passive or active rigid particles at zero Reynolds number. We demonstrate that the iterative solver for the coupled fluid and rigid body equations converges in a bounded number of iterations regardless of the system size. We optimize a number of parameters in the iterative solvers and apply our method to a variety of benchmark problems to carefully assess the accuracy of the rigid multiblob approach as a function of the resolution. We also model the dynamics of colloidal particles studied in recent experiments, such as passive boomerangs in a slit channel, as well as a pair of non-Brownian active nanorods sedimented against a wall.
Prior studies have revealed that nonzero odd viscosity is an essential property for chiral active fluids. Here we report that such an odd viscosity also exists in suspensions of non-active or non-externally-driven but chirally-shaped particles. Computational simulations are carried out for monolayers of dense ratchets in simple shear and planar extensional flows. The contact between two ratchets can be either frictionless or infinitely-frictional, depending on their teeth and sliding directions at the contact point. Our results show that the ratchet suspension has the intermediate shear/extens…
We derive equations of motion for the mean-squared displacement (MSD) of an active Brownian particle (ABP) in a crowded environment modeled by a dense system of passive Brownian particles, and of a passive tracer particle in a dense active-Brownian particle system, using a projection-operator scheme. The interaction of the tracer particle with the dense host environment gives rise to strong memory effects. Evaluating these approximately in the framework of a recently developed mode-coupling theory for the glass transition in active Brownian particles (ABP-MCT), we discuss the various regimes o…
Mixtures of active and passive particles are predicted to exhibit a variety of nonequilibrium phases. Here we report a dynamic clustering phase in mixtures of colloids and motile bacteria. We show that colloidal clustering results from a balance between bond breaking due to persistent active motion and bond stabilization due to torques that align active particle velocity tangentially to the passive particle surface. Furthermore, dynamic clustering spans a broad regime between diffusivity-based and motility-induced phase separation that subsumes typical bacterial motility parameters.

Particle-tracking microrheology of dilute active (self-propelled) colloidal suspensions is studied by considering the external force required to maintain the steady motion of an immersed constant-velocity colloidal probe. If the probe speed is zero, the suspension microstructure is isotropic but exhibits a boundary accumulation of active bath particles at contact due to their self-propulsion. As the probe moves through the suspension, the microstructure is distorted from the nonequilibrium isotropic state, which allows us to define a microviscosity for the suspension using the Stokes drag law.…
We present a novel approach for characterizing the properties and performance of active matter in dilute suspension as well as in crowded environments. We use Super-Heterodyne Laser-Doppler-Velocimetry (SH-LDV) to study large ensembles of catalytically active Janus particles moving under UV-illumination. SH-LDV facilitates a model-free determination of the swimming speed and direction, with excellent ensemble averaging. In addition we obtain in-formation on the distribution of the catalytic activity. Moreover, SH-LDV operates away from walls and permits a facile correction for multiple scatter…
The transport properties of colloidal particles in active liquids have been studied extensively. It has led to a deeper understanding of the interactions between passive and active particles. However, the phase behavior of colloidal particles in active media has received little attention. Here, we present a combined experimental and numerical investigation of passive colloids dispersed in suspensions of active particles. Our study reveals dynamic clustering of colloids in active media due to an interplay of active noise and an attractive effective potential between the colloids. The size-ratio…
We derive a mode-coupling theory (MCT) to describe the dynamics of tracer particles in dense systems of active Brownian particles (ABPs) in two spatial dimensions. The ABP undergo translational and rotational Brownian dynamics, and are equipped with a fixed self-propulsion speed along their orientational vector that describes their active motility. The resulting equations of motion for the tagged-particle density correlation functions describe the various cases of tracer dynamics close to the glass transition: that of a passive colloidal particle in a suspension of ABP, that of a single active…
Flexible filaments and fibres are essential components of important complex fluids that appear in many biological and industrial settings. Direct simulations of these systems that capture the motion and deformation of many immersed filaments in suspension remain a formidable computational challenge due to the complex, coupled fluid--structure interactions of all filaments, the numerical stiffness associated with filament bending, and the various constraints that must be maintained as the filaments deform. In this paper, we address these challenges by describing filament kinematics using quater…
Since its development, Stokesian Dynamics has been a leading approach for the dynamic simulation of suspensions of particles at arbitrary concentrations with full hydrodynamic interactions. Although originally developed for the simulation of passive particle suspensions, the Stokesian Dynamics framework is equally well suited to the analysis and dynamic simulation of suspensions of active particles, as we elucidate here. We show how the reciprocal theorem can be used to formulate the exact dynamics for a suspension of arbitrary active particles and then show how the Stokesian Dynamics method p…
In this work, we investigate the dynamics of the number density fluctuations of a dilute suspension of active particles in a linear viscoelastic fluid. We propose a model for the frequency-dependent diffusion coefficient of the active particles, which captures the effect of rotational diffusion on the persistence of their self-propelled motion and the viscoelasticity of the medium. Using fluctuating hydrodynamics, the linearized equations for the active suspension are derived, from which we calculate its dynamic structure factor and the corresponding intermediate scattering function. For a Max…
