We develop an universal method to significantly suppress probe-induced shifts in any types of atomic clocks using the Ramsey spectroscopy. Our approach is based on adaptation of the synthetic frequency concept [V. I. Yudin, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 030801 (2011)] (previously developed for BBR shift suppression) to the Ramsey spectroscopy with the use of interrogations for different dark time intervals. Universality of the method consists in arbitrariness of the possible Ramsey schemes. However, most extremal results are obtained in combination with so-called hyper-Ramsey spectroscopy [V. I. Yudin, et al., Phys. Rev. A 82, 011804(R) (2010)]. In the latter case, the probe-induced frequency shifts can be suppressed considerably below a fractional level of 10$^{-18}$ practically for any optical atomic clocks, where this shift previously was metrologically significant. The main advantage of our method in comparison with other radical hyper-Ramsey approaches [R. Hobson, et al., Phys. Rev. A 93, 010501(R) (2016); T. Zanon-Willette, et al., Phys. Rev. A 93, 042506 (2016)] consist in much greater efficiency and resistibility in the presence of decoherentization.
For most passive atomic clocks, the Dick effect is one of the main limits to reach its frequency stability limitation due to quantum projection noise. In this paper, we demonstrate that the minimization of the Dick effect for the Ramsey-CPT atomic clock can be accomplished by interleaving lock. By optimizing the duty circle of laser pulses, averaging time during detection and optical intensity of laser beam, the Dick effect induced Allan deviation can be reduced to the level of 10^-14.
We devise a perturbation-immune version of Ramsey's method of separated oscillatory fields. Spectroscopy of an atomic clock transition without compromising the clock's accuracy is accomplished by actively balancing the spectroscopic responses from phase-congruent Ramsey probe cycles of unequal durations. Our simple and universal approach eliminates a wide variety of interrogation-induced line shifts often encountered in high precision spectroscopy, among them, in particular, light shifts, phase chirps, and transient Zeeman shifts. We experimentally demonstrate auto-balanced Ramsey spectroscopy…
We discuss quantum variational optimization of Ramsey interferometry with ensembles of $N$ entangled atoms, and its application to atomic clocks based on a Bayesian approach to phase estimation. We identify best input states and generalized measurements within a variational approximation for the corresponding entangling and decoding quantum circuits. These circuits are built from basic quantum operations available for the particular sensor platform, such as one-axis twisting, or finite range interactions. Optimization is defined relative to a cost function, which in the present study is the Ba…
The mid-term fractional frequency stability of miniaturized atomic clocks can be limited by light-shift effects. In this Letter, we demonstrate the implementation of a symmetric Auto-Balanced Ramsey (SABR) interrogation sequence in a microcell-based atomic clock based on coherent population trapping (CPT). Using this advanced protocol, the sensitivity of the clock frequency to laser power, microwave power and laser frequency variations is reduced, at least by one order of magnitude, in comparison with continuous-wave (CW) or Ramsey interrogation schemes. Light-shift mitigation obtained with th…
We describe a method to stabilize the amplitude of the interrogating microwave field in compact atomic clocks working in a Ramsey approach. In this technique, we take advantage of the pulsed regime to use the atoms themselves as microwave amplitude discriminators. Specifically, in addition to the dependence on the microwave detuning, the atomic signal after the Ramsey interrogation acquires a dependence on the microwave pulse area (amplitude times duration) that can be exploited to implement an active stabilization of the microwave field amplitude, in a similar way in which the Ramsey clock si…
We have extended Ramsey spectroscopy by stepping the probe frequency during the two Ramsey excitation pulses to compensate frequency shifts induced by the excitation itself. This makes precision Ramsey spectroscopy applicable even for transitions that have Stark and Zeeman shifts comparable to the spectroscopic resolution. The method enables a new way to evaluate and compensate key frequency shifts, which benefits in particular, optical clocks based on magnetic field-induced, spectroscopy, two-photon transitions, or heavily forbidden transitions.
Light-induced frequency shifts can be a key limiting contribution to the mid and long-term frequency instability in atomic clocks. In this letter, we demonstrate the experimental implementation of the combined error signal interrogation protocol to a cold-atom clock based on coherent population trapping (CPT) and Ramsey spectroscopy. The method uses a single error signal that results from the normalized combination of two error signals extracted from two Ramsey sequences of different dark periods. The single combined error signal is used to stabilize the atomic clock frequency. Compared to the…
We present non-standard optical Ramsey schemes that use pulses individually tailored in duration, phase, and frequency to cancel spurious frequency shifts related to the excitation itself. In particular, the field shifts and their uncertainties of Ramsey fringes can be radically suppressed (by 2-4 orders of magnitude) in comparison with the usual Ramsey method (using two equal pulses) as well as with single-pulse Rabi spectroscopy. Atom interferometers and optical clocks based on two-photon transitions, heavily forbidden transitions, or magnetically induced spectroscopy could significantly ben…
When performing precision measurements, the quantity being measured is often perturbed by the measurement process itself. This includes precision frequency measurements for atomic clock applications carried out with Ramsey spectroscopy. With the aim of eliminating probe-induced perturbations, a method of generalized auto-balanced Ramsey spectroscopy (GABRS) is presented and rigorously substantiated. Here, the usual local oscillator frequency control loop is augmented with a second control loop derived from secondary Ramsey sequences interspersed with the primary sequences and with a different …
We propose a two-step pulse observation method to enhance frequency stability for coherent population trapping (CPT) atomic clocks. The proposed method is a Raman-Ramsey scheme with low light intensity at resonance observation, and provides a Ramsey-CPT resonance with both reduced frequency sensitivity to the light intensity and a high signal-to-noise ratio by reducing the repumping into a steady dark state. The resonance characteristics were calculated based on density matrix analysis of a $Λ$-type three level system that was modeled on the $^{133}$Cs-D$_1$ line, and the characteristics were …
We demonstrate a high-performance coherent-population-trapping (CPT) Cs vapor cell atomic clock using the push-pull optical pumping technique (PPOP) in the pulsed regime, allowing the detection of high-contrast and narrow Ramsey-CPT fringes. The impact of several experimental parameters onto the clock resonance and short-term fractional frequency stability, including the laser power, the cell temperature and the Ramsey sequence parameters, has been investigated. We observe and explain the existence of a slight dependence on laser power of the central Ramsey-CPT fringe line-width in the pulsed …
Determining light shift in Raman-Ramsey interference is important for the development of atomic frequency standards based on a vapor cell. We have accurately calculated light shift in Raman-Ramsey interference using the density-matrix equations for a three-level system without invoking the adiabatic approximation. Specifically, phase shifts associated with coherent density-matrix terms are studied as they are relevant to the detection of Raman-Ramsey interference in transmission (or absorption) through the medium. For the single-velocity case, the numerically computed results are compared with…
We develop a method of modified hyper-Ramsey spectroscopy in optical clocks, achieving complete immunity to the frequency shifts induced by the probing fields themselves. Using particular pulse sequences with tailored phases, frequencies, and durations, we can derive an error signal centered exactly at the unperturbed atomic resonance with a steep discriminant which is robust against variations in the probe shift. We experimentally investigate the scheme using the magnetically-induced $^1$S$_0- ^3$P$_0$ transition in $^{88}$Sr, demonstrating automatic suppression of a sizeable \num{2e-13} prob…
We present a new interrogation scheme for the next generation of quantum clocks to suppress frequency-shifts induced by laser probing fields themselves based on Generalized Hyper-Ramsey resonances. Sequences of composite laser pulses with specific selection of phases, frequency detunings and durations are combined to generate a very efficient and robust frequency locking signal with almost a perfect elimination of the light-shift from off resonant states and to decouple the unperturbed frequency measurement from the laser's intensity. The frequency lock point generated from synthesized error s…
We have developed a universal method to form the reference signal for the stabilization of arbitrary atomic clocks based on Ramsey spectroscopy. Our approach uses an interrogation scheme of the atomic system with two different Ramsey periods and a specially constructed combined error signal (CES) computed by subtracting two error signals with the appropriate calibration factor. CES spectroscopy allows for perfect elimination of probe-induced light shifts and does not suffer from the effects of relaxation, time-dependent pulse fluctuations and phase-jump modulation errors and other imperfection…
We examine the influence of probe laser intensity fluctuations on hyper-Ramsey spectroscopy. We assume, as is appropriate for relevant cases of interest, that the probe laser intensity $I$ determines both the Rabi frequency $(\propto\sqrt{I})$ and the frequency shift to the atomic transition $(\propto I)$ during probe laser interactions with the atom. The spectroscopic signal depends on these two quantities that co-vary with fluctuations in the probe laser intensity. Introducing a simple model for the fluctuations, we find that the signature robustness of the hyper-Ramsey method can be comprom…
The next generation of atomic frequency standards based on an ensemble of neutral atoms or a single-ion will provide very stringent tests in metrology, applied and fundamental physics requiring a new step in very precise control of external systematic corrections. In the proceedings of the 8th Symposium on Frequency Standards and Metrology, we present a generalization of the recent Hyper-Ramsey spectroscopy with separated oscillating fields using composites pulses in order to suppress field frequency shifts induced by the interrogation laser itself. Sequences of laser pulses including specific…
We develop the method of Ramsey spectroscopy with the use of an additional field compensating the frequency shifts of clock optical transitions. This method in combination with the method of magnetically induced excitation of strongly forbidden transitions $^1S_0$$\to$$^3P_0$ [A.V. Taichenachev, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 083001 (2006)] allows the practically complete compensation (down to the fractional level below 10$^{-17}$ with respect to the unperturbed clock frequency) of field shifts of various origin for even isotopes of alkaline-earth-like atoms confined to an optical lattice …
Sophisticated Ramsey-based interrogation protocols using composite laser pulse sequences have been recently proposed to provide next-generation high-precision atomic clocks with a near perfect elimination of frequency shifts induced during the atom-probing field interaction. We propose here a simple alternative approach to the auto-balanced Ramsey (ABR) interrogation protocol and demonstrate its application to a cold-atom microwave clock based on coherent population trapping. The main originality of the method, based on two consecutive Ramsey sequences with different dark periods, is to sample…
A new generation of atomic sensors using ultra-narrow optical clock transitions and composite pulses are pushing quantum engineering control to a very high level of precision for applied and fundamental physics. Here, we propose a new version of Ramsey-Bordé interferometry introducing arbitrary composite laser pulses with tailored pulse duration, Rabi field, detuning and phase-steps. We explore quantum metrology below the $10^{-18}$ level of fractional accuracy by a fine tuning control of light excitation parameters protecting ultra-narrow optical clock transitions against residual light-shift…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme which effects hyperfine averaging during a Ramsey interrogation of a clock transition. The method eliminates the need to average over multiple optical transitions, reduces the sensitivity of the clock to its environment, and reduces inhomogeneous broadening in a multi-ion clock. The method is compatible with auto-balanced Ramsey spectroscopy, which facilitates elimination of residual shifts due to imperfect implementation and ac Stark shifts from the optical probe. We demonstrate the scheme using correlation spectroscopy of the $^1S_0$-to-$^3D…

The stability of several clock protocols based on 2 to 20 entangled atoms is evaluated numerically by a simulation that includes the effect of decoherence due to classical oscillator noise. In this context the squeezed states discussed by André, Sørensen and Lukin [PRL 92, 239801 (2004)] offer reduced instability compared to clocks based on Ramsey's protocol with unentangled atoms. When more than 15 atoms are simulated, the protocol of Bužek, Derka and Massar [PRL 82, 2207 (1999)] has lower instability. A large-scale numerical search for optimal clock protocols with two to eight qubits yields …
Quantum engineering of time-separated Raman laser pulses in three-level systems is presented to produce an ultra-narrow optical transition in bosonic alkali-earth clocks free from light shifts and with a significantly reduced sensitivity to laser parameter fluctuations. Based on a quantum artificial complex-wave-function analytical model, and supported by a full density matrix simulation including a possible residual effect of spontaneous emission from the intermediate state, atomic phase-shifts associated to Ramsey and Hyper-Ramsey two-photon spectroscopy in optical clocks are derived. Variou…
In trapped-atom clocks, the primary source of decoherence is often the phase noise of the oscillator. For this case, we derive theoretical performance gains by combining several atomic ensembles. For example, M ensembles of N atoms can be combined with a variety of probe periods, to reduce the frequency variance to M 2^-M times that of standard Ramsey clocks. A similar exponential improvement is possible if the atomic phases of some of the ensembles evolve at reduced frequencies. These ensembles may be constructed from atoms or molecules with lower-frequency transitions, or generated by dynami…
This proceedings contribution reports on progress on the design of a Ramsey-type spectrometer that will be used for the spectroscopy of the ground-state hyperfine structure of both hydrogen and deuterium.
We theoretically study the effects of elastic collisions on the determination of frequency standards via Ramsey fringe spectroscopy in optical-lattice atom clocks. Interparticle interactions of bosonic atoms in multiply-occupied lattice sites can cause a linear frequency shift, as well as generate asymmetric Ramsey fringe patterns and reduce fringe visibility due to interparticle entanglement. We propose a method of reducing these collisional effects in an optical lattice by introducing a phase difference of $π$ between the Ramsey driving fields in adjacent sites. This configuration suppresses…
We study a modified Ramsey spectroscopy technique employing slowly decaying states for quantum metrology applications using dense ensembles. While closely positioned atoms exhibit superradiant collective decay and dipole-dipole induced frequency shifts, recent results [Ostermann, Ritsch and Genes, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{111}, 123601 (2013)] suggest the possibility to suppress such detrimental effects and achieve an even better scaling of the frequency sensitivity with interrogation time than for noninteracting particles. Here we present an in-depth analysis of this 'protected subspace Ramsey…
In this work, the peculiarities of Ramsey resonance and its sensitivity to the light shift from an optically dense medium of cold atoms are investigated. We considered different composite pulse protocols for clock spectroscopy such as hyper-Ramsey, modified and generalized hyper-Ramsey schemes. Shapes of resonances and error signals changes significantly due to the processes of absorption and dispersion in the atomic medium. The dependence of the position of the central fringe resonance with a residual uncompensated light shift of the atomic transition is theoretically studied when taking into…
Probing an atomic resonance without disturbing it is an ubiquitous issue in physics. This problem is critical in high-accuracy spectroscopy or for the next generation of atomic optical clocks. Ultra-high resolution frequency metrology requires sophisticated interrogation schemes and robust protocols handling pulse length errors and residual frequency detuning offsets . This review reports recent progress and perspective in such schemes, using sequences of composite laser-pulses tailored in pulse duration, frequency and phase, inspired by NMR techniques and quantum information processing. After…
A new class of atomic interferences using ultra-narrow optical transitions are pushing quantum engineering control to a very high level of precision for a next generation of sensors and quantum gate operations. In such context, we propose a new quantum engineering approach to Ramsey-Bordé interferometry introducing multiple composite laser pulses with tailored pulse duration, Rabi field amplitude, frequency detuning and laser phase-step. We explore quantum metrology with hyper-Ramsey and hyper-Hahn-Ramsey clocks below the $10^-18$ level of fractional accuracy by a fine tuning control of light …
Ramsey spectroscopy has become a powerful technique for probing non-equilibrium dynamics of internal (pseudospin) degrees of freedom of interacting systems. In many theoretical treatments, the key to understanding the dynamics has been to assume the external (motional) degrees of freedom are decoupled from the pseudospin degrees of freedom. Determining the validity of this approximation -- known as the spin model approximation -- is complicated, and has not been addressed in detail. Here we shed light in this direction by calculating Ramsey dynamics exactly for two interacting spin-1/2 particl…
An exact generalization of the Ramsey transition probability is derived to improve ultra-high precision measurement and quantum state engineering when a particle is subjected to independently-tailored separated oscillating fields. The phase-shift accumulated at the end of the interrogation scheme offering high-level control of quantum states throughout various laser parameters conditions. The Generalized Hyper-Ramsey Resonance based on independent manipulation of interaction time, field amplitude, phase and frequency detuning is presented to increase the performance of next generation of atomi…
We propose to test the electric neutrality of neutrons by a new technique using the spectroscopy of quantum states of ultra-cold neutrons in the gravity potential above a vertical mirror. The new technique is an application of Ramsey's method of separated oscillating fields to neutron's quantum states in the gravity potential of the earth. In the presence of an electric field E parallel or antiparallel to the direction of the acceleration of the earth g, the energy of the quantum states changes due to an additional electrostatic potential if a neutron carries a non-vanishing charge. In the lon…
We discuss the feasibility to realize a space cold atom clock with counter-propagating cold atoms in microgravity. The design of the space clock is based on atomic beam clock with a Ramsey cavity, except a magneto-optical trap (MOT) is placed at each side. Cold atoms are launched from MOTs at both side of the clock simultaneously and move at counter-direction towards each other. The velocity of launched atoms is precisely controlled to the Ramsauer-Townsend resonance so that no additional collision frequency shift is taken place. Such a configuration can efficiently cancel the frequency shift …
The coherent interaction of Rydberg helium atoms with microwave fields in a $λ/4$ superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator has been exploited to probe the spectral characteristics of an individual resonator mode. This was achieved by preparing the atoms in the 1s55s$^3$S$_1$ Rydberg level by resonance enhanced two-color two-photon excitation from the metastable 1s2s$^3$S$_1$ level. The atoms then travelled over the resonator in which the third harmonic microwave field, at a frequency of $ω_{\mathrm{res}}=2π\times19.556$ GHz, drove the two-photon 1s55s$^3$S$_1\rightarrow$1s56s$^3$S$_1$ tran…
We describe a collective state atomic clock with Ramsey fringes narrowed by a factor of $\sqrt{N}$ compared to a conventional clock, N being the number of non-interacting atoms, without violating the uncertainty relation. This narrowing is explained as being due to interferences among the collective states, representing an effective $\sqrt{N}$ fold increase in the clock frequency, without entanglement. The detection process, which measures a collective state, can be used to increase the quantum efficiency of detection significantly, yielding a net improvement in stability by as much as a facto…
The generalized hyper-Ramsey resonance formula originally published in Phys. Rev. A vol 92, 023416 (2015) is derived using a Cayley-Klein spinor parametrization. The shape of the interferometric resonance and the associated composite phase-shift are reformulated including all individual laser pulse parameters. Potential robustness of signal contrast and phase-shift of the wave-function fringe pattern can now be arbitrarily explored tracking any shape distortion due to systematic effects from the probe laser. An exact and simple analytical expression describing a Ramsey's method of separated co…
We report the detection of high-contrast and narrow Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) Ramsey fringes in a Cs vapor cell using a simple-architecture laser system. The latter allows the combination of push-pull optical pumping (PPOP) and a temporal Ramsey-like pulsed interrogation. An originality of the optics package is the use of a single Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator (MZ EOM) both for optical sidebands generation and light switch for pulsed interaction. Typical Ramsey fringes with a linewidth of 166 Hz and a contrast of 33 % are detected in a cm-scale buffer-gas filled Cs vapor cell. …
We excite spin-waves with spatially inhomogeneous pulses and study the resulting frequency shifts of a chip-scale atomic clock of trapped $^{87}$Rb. The density-dependent frequency shifts of the hyperfine transition simulate the s-wave collisional frequency shifts of fermions, including those of optical lattice clocks. As the spin polarizations oscillate in the trap, the frequency shift reverses and it depends on the area of the second Ramsey pulse, exhibiting a predicted beyond mean-field frequency shift. Numerical and analytic models illustrate the observed behaviors.

High-harmonic generation (HHG) is widely used for up-conversion of amplified (near) infrared ultrafast laser pulses to short wavelengths. We demonstrate that Ramsey-comb spectroscopy, based on two such pulses derived from a frequency-comb laser, enables us to observe phase effects in this process with a few mrad precision. As a result, we could perform the most accurate spectroscopic measurement based on light from HHG, illustrated with a determination of the $5p^6 \rightarrow 5p^5 8s~^2[3/2]_1$ transition at 110 nm in $^{132}$Xe. We improve its relative accuracy $10^4$ times to a value of $2.…
The off-resonant AC Stark shift for coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances probed with Ramsey spectroscopy is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Measurements with laser-cooled $^{87}$Rb atoms show excellent quantitative agreement with a simple theory. The shift depends on the relative intensity of the two CPT light fields, but depends only weakly on the total intensity. Since the origin of the shift is through couplings of the interrogation light to off-resonant excited state hyperfine levels, the size and sign of the shift depend on the specific interrogation scheme. Howeve…
We report Ramsey spectroscopy on the clock states of individual Cs impurities immersed in an ultracold Rb bath. We record both the interaction-driven phase evolution and the decay of fringe contrast of the Ramsey interference signal to obtain information about bath density or temperature nondestructively. The Ramsey fringe is modified by a differential shift of the collisional energy when the two Cs states superposed interact with the Rb bath. This differential shift is directly affected by the mean gas density and the details of the Rb-Cs interspecies scattering length, affecting the phase ev…
We show that optical spectroscopy of Rydberg states can provide accurate {\em in situ} thermometry at room-temperature. Transitions from a metastable state to Rydberg states with principal quantum numbers of 25 to 30 have 200 times larger fractional frequency sensitivities to blackbody radiation than the Strontium clock transition. We demonstrate that magic wavelength lattices exist for both Strontium and Ytterbium transitions between the metastable and Rydberg states. Frequency measurements of Rydberg transitions with $10^{-16}$ accuracy provide $10 \, \mathrm{mK}$ resolution and yield a blac…
We theoretically discuss an implementation of a Sagnac interferometer with cold atoms. In contrast to currently existing schemes our protocol does not rely on any free propagation of atoms. Instead it is based on superpositions of fully confined atoms and state-dependent transport along a closed path. Using Ramsey sequences for an atomic clock, the accumulated Sagnac phase is encoded in the resulting population imbalance between two internal (clock) states. Using minimal models for the above protocol we analytically quantify limitations arising from atomic dynamics and finite temperature. We d…
High precision spectroscopy of the $^1S_0$-to-${^1}D_2$ clock transition of $^{176}$Lu is reported. Measurements are performed with Hertz level precision with the accuracy of the hyperfine-averaged frequency limited by the calibration of an active hydrogen maser to the SI definition of the second via a GPS link. The measurements also provide accurate determination of the $^1D_2$ hyperfine structure. Hyperfine structure constants associated with the magnetic octupole and electric hexadecapole moments of the nucleus are considered, which includes a derivation of correction terms from third-order…
We report an s-wave collisional frequency shift of an atomic clock based on fermions. In contrast to bosons, the fermion clock shift is insensitive to the population difference of the clock states, set by the first pulse area in Ramsey spectroscopy, θ_1. The fermion shift instead depends strongly on the second pulse area θ_2. It allows the shift to be canceled, nominally at θ_2 = π/2, but correlations shift the null to slightly larger θ_2. The shift applies to optical lattice clocks and increases with the spatial inhomogeneity of the clock excitation field, naturally large at optical frequenci…
We demonstrate precision measurement and control of inhomogeneous broadening in a multi-ion clock consisting of three $^{176}$Lu$^+$ ions. Microwave spectroscopy between hyperfine states in the $^3D_1$ level is used to characterise differential systematic shifts between ions, most notably those associated with the electric quadrupole moment. By appropriate alignment of the magnetic field, we demonstrate suppression of these effects to the $\sim 10^{-17}$ level relative to the $^1S_0\leftrightarrow{}^3D_1$ optical transition frequency. Correlation spectroscopy on the optical transition demonstr…
