We make a systematic study of filtrations of a free group F defined as products of powers of the lower central series of F. Under some assumptions on the exponents, we characterize these filtrations in terms of the group algebra, the Magnus algebra of non-commutative power series, and linear representations by upper-triangular unipotent matrices. These characterizations generalize classical results of Grun, Magnus, Witt, and Zassenhaus from the 1930's, as well as later results on the lower p-central filtration and the p-Zassenhaus filtrations. We derive alternative recursive definitions of such filtrations, extending results of Lazard. Finally, we relate these filtrations to Massey products in group cohomology.
For a prime number $p$ and a free profinite group $S$ on the basis $X$, let $S_{(n,p)}$, $n=1,2,\ldots,$ be the $p$-Zassenhaus filtration of $S$. For $p>n$, we give a word-combinatorial description of the cohomology group $H^2(S/S_{(n,p)},\mathbb{Z}/p)$ in terms of the shuffle algebra on $X$. We give a natural linear basis for this cohomology group, which is constructed by means of unitriangular representations arising from Lyndon words.
For several natural filtrations of a free group S we express the n-th term of the filtration as the intersection of all kernels of homomorphisms from S to certain groups of upper-triangular unipotent matrices. This generalizes a classical result of Grun for the lower central filtration. In particular, we do this for the n-th term in the lower p-central filtration of S.
The Burau representation is a fundamental bridge between the braid group and diverse other topics in mathematics. A 1974 question of Birman asks for a description of the image; in this paper we give a "strong approximation" to the answer. Since a 1984 paper of Squier it has been known that the Burau representation preserves a certain Hermitian form. We show that the Burau image is dense in this unitary group relative to a topology induced by a naturally-occurring filtration. We expect that the methods of the paper should extend to many other representations of the braid group and perhaps ultim…
We prove that every term of the lower central series and Johnson filtrations of the Torelli subgroups of the mapping class group and the automorphism group of a free group is finitely generated in a linear stable range. This was originally proved for the second terms by Ershov and He.
We prove that every term of the lower central series and Johnson filtrations of the Torelli subgroups of the mapping class group and the automorphism group of a free group are finitely generated in a stable range. This was originally proved for the commutator subgroup by Ershov-He.
We consider two mod-p central series of the free group given by Stallings and Zassenhaus. Applying these series to definitions of Dennis Johnson's filtration of the mapping class group we obtain two mod-p Johnson filtrations. Further, we adapt the definition of the Johnson homomorphisms to obtain mod-p Johnson homomorphisms. We calculate the image of the first of these homomorphisms. We give generators for the kernels of these homomorphisms as well. We restrict the range of our mod-p Johnson homomorphisms using work of Morita. We finally prove the announced result of Perron that a rational hom…
We construct a series of homomorphisms from the $Y$-filtration on the monoid of homology cylinders to torsion modules via the mod $\mathbb{Z}$ reduction of the LMO functor. The restriction of our homomorphism to the lower central series of the Torelli group does not factor through Morita's refinement of the Johnson homomorphism. We use it to show that the abelianization of the Johnson kernel of a closed surface has torsion elements. We also determine the third graded quotient $Y_3\mathcal{IC}_{g,1}/Y_4$ of the $Y$-filtration.
We study H^*(P), the mod p cohomology of a finite p--group P, viewed as an Out(P)--module. In particular, we study the conjecture, first considered by Martino and Priddy, that, if e_S in Z/p[Out(P)] is a primitive idempotent associated to an irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module S, then the Krull dimension of e_SH^*(P) equals the rank of P. The rank is an upper bound by Quillen's work, and the conjecture can be viewed as the statement that every irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module occurs as a composition factor in H^*(P) with similar frequency. In summary, our results are as follows. A strong form of th…
For k >= 1, let Torelli_g^1(k) be the k-th term in the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group of a genus g surface with one boundary component. We prove that for all k, there exists some G_k >= 0 such that Torelli_g^1(k) is generated by elements which are supported on subsurfaces whose genus is at most G_k. We also prove similar theorems for the Johnson filtration of Aut(F_n) and for certain mod-p analogues of the Johnson filtrations of both the mapping class group and of Aut(F_n). The main tools used in the proofs are the related theories of FI-modules (due to the first author together…
Using spaces of homomorphisms and the descending central series of the free groups, simplicial spaces are constructed for each integer q>1 and every topological group G, with realizations B(q,G) that filter the classifying space BG. In particular for q=2 this yields a single space B(2,G) assembled from all the n-tuples of commuting elements in G. Homotopy properties of the B(q,G) are considered for finite groups. Cohomology calculations are provided for compact Lie groups. The spaces B(2,G) are described in detail for transitively commutative groups.
Let $F\_n$ be the free group on $n$ generators. Consider the group $IA\_n$ of automorphisms of $F\_n$ acting trivially on its abelianization. There are two canonical filtrations on $IA\_n$: the first one is its lower central series $Γ\_*$; the second one is the Andreadakis filtration $\mathcal A\_*$, defined from the action on $F\_n$. The Andreadakis problem consists in understanding the difference between these filtrations. Here, we show that they coincide when restricted to the subgroup of triangular automorphisms, and to the pure braid group.
We show, finitely generated rational $\mathsf{VIC}_{\mathbb Q}$-modules and $\mathsf{SI}_{\mathbb Q}$-modules are uniformly representation stable and all their submodules are finitely generated. We use this to prove two conjectures of Church and Farb, which state that the quotients of the lower central series of the Torelli subgroups of $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$ and $\mathrm{Mod}(Σ_{g,1})$ are uniformly representation stable as sequences of representations of the general linear groups and the symplectic groups, respectively. Furthermore we prove an analogous statement for their Johnson filtrations.
Let A denote either the automorphism group of the free group of rank n>=4 or the mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus n>=12 with at most 1 boundary component, and let G be either the subgroup of IA-automorphisms or the Torelli subgroup of A, respectively. For a natural number N denote by G_N the Nth term of the lower central series of G. We prove that (i) any subgroup of G containing [G,G] (in particular, the Johnson kernel in the mapping class group case) is finitely generated; (ii) if N=2 or n>=8N-4 and K is any subgroup of G containing G_N (for instance, K can be the Nth te…
A discrete group which admits a faithful, finite dimensional, linear representation over a field $\mathbb F$ of characteristic zero is called linear. This note combines the natural structure of semi-direct products with work of A. Lubotzky on the existence of linear representations to develop a technique to give sufficient conditions to show that a semi-direct product is linear. Let $G$ denote a discrete group which is a semi-direct product given by a split extension $1 \to π\to G \to Γ\to 1$. This note defines an additional type of structure for this semi-direct product called a stable extens…
Let $F\_n$ be the free group on $n$ generators. Consider the group $IA\_n$ of automorpisms of $F\_n$ acting trivially on its abelianization. There are two canonical filtrations on $IA\_n$: the first one is its lower central series $Γ\_*$; the second one is the Andreadakis filtration $\mathcal A\_*$, defined from the action on $F\_n$. In this paper, we establish that the canonical morphism between the associated graded Lie rings ${\mathcal L}(Γ\_*)$ and ${\mathcal L}(\mathcal A\_*)$ is stably surjective. We then investigate a $p$-restricted version of the Andreadakis problem. A calculation of t…
The goal of this paper is to generalize several group theoretic concepts such as the center and commutator subgroup, central series, and ultimately nilpotence to a supercharacter theoretic setting, and to use these concepts to show that there can be a strong connection between the structure of a group and the structure of its supercharacter theories. We then use these concepts to show that the upper and lower annihilator series of $J$ can be described in terms of certain central series for the algebra group $G=1+J$ defined by $\mathsf{S}$, when $\mathsf{S}$ is the algebra group supercharacter …
We consider the Lie algebra associated with the descending central series filtration of the pure braid group of a closed surface of arbitrary genus. R. Bezrukavnikov gave a presentation of this Lie algebra over the rational numbers. We show that his presentation remains true for this Lie algebra itself, i.e. over integers.
Let F_o be a non-archimedean locally compact field of residual characteristic not 2. Let G be a classical group over F_o (with no quaternionic algebra involved) which is not of type A_n for n>1. Let b be an element of the Lie algebra g of G that we assume semisimple for simplicity. Let H be the centralizer of b in G and h its Lie algebra. Let I and I_b denote the (enlarged) Bruhat-Tits buildings of G and H respectively. We prove that there is a natural set of maps j_b : I_b --> I which enjoy the following properties: they are affine, H-equivariant, map any apartment of I_b into an apartment of…
This notes are additional remarks to an article of Broussous and Stevens [arXiv:math/0402228v1]. We consider a unitary group G over a non-Archimedean local field k_0 of residue characteristic different from two and an element β of the Lie algebra \mf{g} of G. Let H be the centralizer of β in G. We further assume k_0[β] to be semisimple. We prove that there is an affine H-equivariant map between the Bruhat-Tits buildings B(H)\ra B(G) which is compatible with the Lie-algebra filtrations (CLF) and maps apartments into apartments. The map is toral if β is separable. For simplicity let us now assum…
From Morita theoretic viewpoint, computing Morita invariants is important. We prove that the intersection of the center and the $n$th (right) socle $ZS^n(A) := Z(A) \cap \operatorname{Soc}^n(A)$ of a finite-dimensional algebra $A$ is a Morita invariant; This is a generalization of important Morita invariants --- the center $Z(A)$ and the Reynolds ideal $ZS^1(A)$. As an example, we also studied $ZS^n(FG)$ for the group algebra $FG$ of a finite $p$-group $G$ over a field $F$ of positive characteristic $p$. Such an algebra has a basis along the socle filtration, known as the Jennings basis. We pr…
