We consider heterotic string backgrounds in four-dimensional Minkowski space, where N=1 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken at a low scale m_{3/2} by a stringy Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. We review how the effective gauge couplings at 1-loop may evade the "decompactification problem", namely the proportionality of the gauge threshold corrections, with the large volume of the compact space involved in the supersymmetry breaking.
We investigate heterotic ground states in four dimensions in which N=4 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken to N=2. N=4 supersymmetry is restored at a decompactification limit corresponding to $m_{3/2}\to 0$. We calculate the full moduli dependent threshold corrections and confirm that they are supressed in the decompactification limit $m_{3/2}\to 0$ as expected from the restoration of N=4 supersymmetry. This should be contrasted with the behavior of the standard N=2 groundstates where the coupling blow up linearly with the volume of the decompactifying manifold. This mechanism provides a sol…
We study heterotic ground states in which supersymmetry is broken by coupling the momentum and winding charges of two large extra dimensions to the R-charges of the supersymmetry generators. The large dimensions give rise to towers of heavy string thresholds that contribute to the running of the gauge couplings. In the general case, these contributions are proportional to the volume of the two large dimensions and invalidate the perturbative string expansion. The problem is evaded if the susy breaking sectors arise as a spontaneously broken phase of N=4 -> N=2 -> N=0 supersymmetry, provided th…
We present a solution to the decompactification problem of gauge thresholds in chiral heterotic string theories with two large extra dimensions, where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. Whenever the Kaluza-Klein scale is much lower than the string scale, the infinite towers of heavy states contribute non-trivially to the renormalisation of gauge couplings, which typically grow linearly with the large volume of the internal space and invalidate perturbation theory. We trace the origin of the decompactification problem to properties of the six dimensional theo…
We analize instanton generated superpotentials for three dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories obtained by compactifying on S^1 N=1 four dimensional theories. In the N_f=1 case, we find that the vacua in the decompactification limit is given by the singular points of the Coulomb branch of the N=2 four dimensional theory (we also consider the massive case). The decompactification limit of the superpotential for pure gauge theories without chiral matter is interpreted in terms of `t Hooft's fractional instanton amplitudes.
We investigate compactifications of M-theory from $11\to 5\to 4$ dimensions and discuss geometrical properties of 4-d moduli fields related to the structure of 5-d theory. We study supersymmetry breaking by compactification of the fifth dimension and find that an universal superpotential is generated for the axion-dilaton superfield $S$. The resulting theory has a vacuum with $<S>=1$, zero cosmological constant and a gravitino mass depending on the fifth radius as $m_{3/2} \sim R_5^{-2}/M_{Pl}$. We discuss phenomenological aspects of this scenario, mainly the string unification and the decompa…
We review the subject of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. First we consider supersymmetry breaking in a semiclassical theory. We illustrate it with several examples, demonstrating different phenomena, including metastable supersymmetry breaking. Then we give a brief review of the dynamics of supersymmetric gauge theories. Finally, we use this dynamics to present various mechanisms for dynamical supersymmetry breaking. These notes are based on lectures given by the authors in 2007, at various schools.
This article reviews the subject of supersymmetry and its breaking. The emphasis is on recent developments in metastable, dynamical supersymmetry breaking, which permit the construction of promising models of particle physics.
I present a realistic model of dynamical supersymmetry breaking, in which a $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge interaction communicates supersymmetry breaking to the standard fields. A distinctive superpartner spectrum is predicted in this model.
We review mechanisms of dynamical supersymmetry breaking. Several observations that narrow the search for possible models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking are summarized. These observations include the necessary and sufficient conditions for supersymmetry breaking. The two conditions are based on non-rigorous arguments, and we show examples where they are too restrictive. Dynamical effects present in models with product gauge groups are given special attention.
Dynamical supersymmetry breaking is considered in models which admit descriptions in terms of electric, confined, or magnetic degrees of freedom in various limits. In this way, a variety of seemingly different theories which break supersymmetry are actually inter-related by confinement or duality. Specific examples are given in which there are two dual descriptions of the supersymmetry breaking ground state.
We consider supersymmetry breaking models with a purely constant superpotential in supergravity. The supersymmetry breaking is induced for the vanishing cosmological constant. As a hidden mediation sector of supersymmetry breaking, it naturally leads to a split spectrum in supersymmetric standard model. We also point out possible utility of our setup to construct nonlinear sigma model and/or Fayet-Iliopoulos-like term in broken supergravity.
We consider the idea of combining the supersymmetry breaking and messenger sectors in models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. We discuss the advantages and problems of such models, and present an existence proof by constructing an explicit example. We explore in some detail the low-energy supersymmetry-breaking dynamics and the generation of supersymmetry-breaking soft masses of the standard model superpartners, and discuss many features which are likely to be shared by more realistic models with dynamical messengers.
We show that for the simplest models of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, including all existing models, the true vacuum will not preserve QCD if it communicates supersymmetry breaking to the visible sector. We show that the desired supersymmetry breaking color preserving vacuum can nonetheless be stable cosmologically, but only if certain couplings are sufficiently small. We also present simple modifications to the sector which communicates supersymmetry breaking in which the true vacuum is acceptable, suggesting desirable properties to be sought in dynamical models of supersymmetry brea…
In the Randall-Sundrum compactification of AdS$_5$ with detuned brane tensions, supersymmetry can be spontaneously broken by a non-trivial Wilson line for the graviphoton. The supersymmetry breaking vanishes in the tuned limit. This effect is equivalent to supersymmetry breaking by Scherk-Schwarz boundary conditions.
We study Seiberg duality for N=1 supersymmetric QCD with soft supersymmetry-breaking terms. We generate the soft terms through gauge mediation by coupling two theories related by Seiberg duality to the same supersymmetry-breaking sector. In this way, we know what a supersymmetry-breaking perturbation in one theory maps into in its ``dual''. Assuming a canonical Kahler potential we calculate the soft terms induced in the magnetic theory and find that some of the scalars acquire negative masses squared. If duality is still good for small supersymmetry breaking, this may imply some specific symme…
This is a review of basic ideas and mechanisms encountered in the supersymmetry breaking problem at the global level, in supergravity models, and in superstring theory.
We review recent works on supersymmetry breaking and gauge mediation. We survey our current understanding of dynamical supersymmetry breaking mechanisms and describe new model building tools using duality, meta-stability, and stringy construction. We discuss phenomenological constraints and their solutions, paying attentions to issues with gaugino masses and electroweak symmetry breaking.
We show that small soft terms can create a supersymmetry breaking minimum along a pseudo-flat direction of a hidden sector which would otherwise be incapable of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. As this minimum lies along a pseudo-flat direction, with non-zero F- or D-terms, the resultant supersymmetry breaking in the hidden sector can be orders of magnitude greater than the soft terms which created the minimum. This opens new avenues for building models of gauge mediation, may have consequences for the cosmology of hidden sectors, and strengthens the case for multiple supersymmetry breaking…
We propose a simple and natural model of dynamical supersymmetry breaking, which could be used as a mechanism for spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in a gravitationally coupled hidden sector. The gaugino masses in the visible sector are naturally of the same size as the squark, slepton, and gravitino masses.
We show how spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in the vacuum state of higher-derivative supergravity is transmitted, as explicit soft supersymmetry-breaking terms, to the effective Lagrangian of the standard electroweak model. The general structure of the soft supersymmetry breaking terms is presented and a new scenario for understanding the gauge hierarchy problem, based on the functional form of these terms, is discussed.
We propose a supersymmetric extension of the standard model whose Higgs sector induces a spontaneous supersymmetry breaking by itself. Unlike the minimal extension, the current Higgs mass bound can be evaded even at the tree-level without the help of the soft breaking terms due to the usual hidden sector, as is reminiscent of the next to minimal case. We also have a possibly light pseudo-goldstino in our visible sector in addition to extra Higgs particles, both of which stem from supersymmetry breaking dynamics. In such a setup of visible supersymmetry breaking, we may see a part of supersymme…
In this thesis we focus on the construction of models in which a supersymmetry breaking hidden sector is located on one fixed point of an extra dimensional interval and the effects are gauge mediated across this interval to the other fixed point where the supersymmetric standard model is located. We use the formalism of current correlators to encode supersymmetry breaking effects and explore flat, warped and deconstructed extra dimensions. We also apply these techniques to models of metastable supersymmetry breaking in N = 1 Supersymmetric Quantum Chromodynamics.
We discuss the spontaneous supersymetry breaking within the low-energy effective supergravity action of four-dimensional superstrings. In particular, we emphasize the non-universality of the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters, the $μ$-problem and the duality symmetries.
We show that metastable supersymmetry breaking is generic near certain enhanced symmetry points of gauge theory moduli spaces. Our model consists of two sectors coupled by a singlet and combines dynamical supersymmetry breaking with an O'Raifeartaigh mechanism in terms of confined variables. All relevant mass parameters, including the supersymmetry breaking scale, are generated dynamically. The metastable vacua appear as a result of a balance between non-perturbative and perturbative quantum effects along a pseudo-runaway direction.
We review the origin of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms in N=1 supergravity models of particle physics. We first consider general formulae for those terms in general models with a hidden sector breaking supersymmetry at an intermediate energy scale. The results for some simple models are given. We then consider the results obtained in some simple superstring models in which particular assumptions about the origin of supersymmetry breaking are made. These are models in which the seed of supersymmetry breaking is assumed to be originated in the dilaton/moduli sector of the theory.
In theories in which SUSY is broken on a brane separated from the MSSM matter fields, supersymmetry breaking is naturally mediated in a variety of ways. Absent other light fields in the theory, gravity will mediate supersymmetry breaking through the conformal anomaly. If gauge fields propagate in the extra dimension they, too, can mediate supersymmetry breaking effects. The presence of gauge fields in the bulk motivates us to consider the effects of new messenger fields with holomorphic and non-holomorphic couplings to the supersymmetry breaking sector. These can lead to contributions to the s…
It is known that one can add D-term contributions for U(1)_Y and U(1)_{B-L} to the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking to make the superparticle spectrum phenomenologically viable. We point out that this can be done without spoiling its important virtue, namely the ultraviolet insensitivity. This framework can be derived from supersymmetry breaking and U(1)_{B-L} breaking on hidden brane(s).
In this paper we study dynamical supersymmetry breaking in absence of gravity with the matter content of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The hidden sector of the theory is a strongly coupled gauge theory, realized in terms of microscopic variables which condensate to form mesons. The supersymmetry breaking scalar potential combines F, D terms with instanton generated interactions in the Higgs-mesons sector. We show that for a large region in parameter space the vacuum breaks in addition to supersymmetry also electroweak gauge symmetry. We furthermore present local D-brane configurat…
We demonstrate that the supersymmetry is dynamically broken in the four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to a strongly-coupled superconformal theory T_N. This is a direct generalization of the model of supersymmetry breaking on deformed moduli space in supersymmetric QCD with an SU(2) gauge group.
We examine the problem of supersymmetry breaking in realistic superstring standard--like models which are constructed in the free fermionic formulation. We impose a supersymmetric vacuum at the Planck scale by requiring vanishing F and D constraints at the cubic level of the superpotential. We then study possible scenarios for supersymmetry breaking by examining the role of nonrenormalizable terms and hidden sector gaugino and matter condensates. We argue that in some scenarios hierarchical supersymmetry breaking in the observable sector is possible.
We discuss the possibility of finding scenarios, within type IIB string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with fluxes, for realizing gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. We find that while in principle such scenarios are not ruled out, in practice it is hard to get acceptable constructions, since typically, supersymmetry breaking cannot be separated from the stabilization of the light modulus.
We use string duality to describe instanton induced spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in string compactifications with additional background fields. Dynamical supersymmetry breaking by space-time instantons in the heterotic string theory is mapped to a tree level breaking in the type II string which can be explicitly calculated by geometric methods. It is argued that the instanton corrections resurrect the no-go theorem on partial supersymmetry breaking. The point particle limit describes the non-perturbative scalar potential of a SYM theory localized on a hypersurface of space-time. The N=0 …
We discuss the question of what type and scale of supersymmetry breaking might be statistically favored among vacua of string/M theory, building on comments in Denef and Douglas, hep-th/0404116.
We show that supersymmetry breaking in a class of theories with SU(N) x SU(N-2) gauge symmetry can be studied in a calculable sigma model. We use the sigma model to show that the supersymmetry breaking vacuum in these theories leaves a large subgroup of flavor symmetries intact, and to calculate the masses of the low-lying states. By embedding the Standard Model gauge groups in the unbroken flavor symmetry group we construct a class of models in which supersymmetry breaking is communicated by both gravitational and gauge interactions. One distinguishing feature of these models is that the mess…
The effects of heavy mass thresholds on anomaly-mediated soft supersymmetry breaking terms are discussed. While heavy thresholds completely decouple to lowest order in the supersymmetry breaking, it is argued that they do affect the breaking terms at higher orders. The relevant contributions typically occur at lower order in the loop expansion compared to purely anomaly mediated contributions. The non decoupling contributions may be used to render models in which the only source of supersymmetry breaking is anomaly mediation viable, by generating positive contributions to the sleptons' masses …
We propose a new class of models with gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, the cascade supersymmetry breaking. This class of models is consistent with the gravitino mass as low as O(1)eV without having suppressed gaugino masses, nor the Landau pole problems of the gauge coupling constants of the Standard Model below the scale of the grand unification. In particular, there is no supersymmetric vacuum in the vicinity of the supersymmetry breaking vacuum even for such a low gravitino mass. Thus, the model does not have a vacuum stability problem decaying into supersymmetric vacua.
We study the scenario that conformal dynamics leads to metastable supersymmetry breaking vacua. At a high energy scale, the superpotential is not R-symmetric, and has a supersymmetric minimum. However, conformal dynamics suppresses several operators along renormalization group flow toward the infrared fixed point. Then we can find an approximately R-symmetric superpotential, which has a metastable supersymmetry breaking vacuum, and the supersymmetric vacuum moves far away from the metastable supersymmetry breaking vacuum. We show a 4D simple model. Furthermore, we can construct 5D models with …
The Hamiltonian of the wrapping and KK modes of the supermembrane is identified with the SL(2, Z) symmetric axion-dilaton black hole mass formula. It means that the supermembrane with KK modes wrapped $m$ times around the space-time torus of compactified dimensions induces the superpotential breaking spontaneously N=2 down to N=1 SUSY. The supersymmetry breaking parameter Lambda is inversely proportional to the area A of the space-time torus around which the supermembrane wraps. The restoration of supersymmetry as well as decompactification of higher dimensions of space-time are forbidden by t…
We study total and partial supersymmetry breaking by freely acting orbifolds, or equivalently by Scherk-Schwarz compactifications, in type I string theory. In particular, we describe a four-dimensional chiral compactification with spontaneously broken N=1 supersymmetry, some models with partial $N=4\to N=2$ and $N=4\to N=1$ supersymmetry breaking and their heterotic and M-theory duals. A generic feature of these models is that in the gravitational sector and in the spectrum of D-branes parallel to the breaking coordinate, all mass splittings are proportional to the compactification scale, whil…
Some formal aspects of supersymmetry breaking are reviewed. The classic "requirements" for supersymmetry breaking include chiral matter, a dynamical superpotential, and a classical superpotential which completely lifts the moduli space. These "requirements" may be evaded in theories with large matter representations. The mechanisms of supersymmetry breaking by confinement and quantum deformation of the moduli space are explained, with emphasis on the importance of identifying the relevant degrees of freedom in the ground state. Supersymmetry breaking and the behavior of the Witten index in non…
We consider supersymmetry breaking due to a Scherk-Schwarz twist or localized mass terms in 6d ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory compactified on the orbifold $T^2/Z_2$. We show that the Scherk-Schwarz breaking in 6d is equivalent to the localized breaking with mass terms along the lines in extra dimensions. In the presence of the considered supersymmetry breaking, we find that there arises a finite one-loop mass correction to a brane scalar due to the KK modes of bulk gauge fields.
We construct new examples of models of metastable D=4 N=1 supersymmetry breaking in which all scales are generated dynamically. Our models rely on Seiberg duality and on the ISS mechanism of supersymmetry breaking in massive SQCD. Some of the electric quark superfields arise as composites of a strongly coupled gauge sector. This allows us to start with a simple cubic superpotential and an asymptotically free gauge group in the ultraviolet, and end up with an infrared effective theory which breaks supersymmetry dynamically in a metastable state.
We point out that an anomalous gauge U(1) symmetry is a natural candidate for being the mediator and messenger of supersymmetry breaking. It facilitates dynamical supersymmetry breaking even in the flat limit. Soft masses are induced by both gravity and the U(1) gauge interactions giving an unusual mass hierarchy in the sparticle spectrum which suppresses flavor violations. This scenario does not suffer from the Polonyi problem.
Higher-dimensional theories provide a promising framework for unified extensions of the supersymmetric standard model. Compactifications to four dimensions often lead to U(1) symmetries beyond the standard model gauge group, whose breaking scale is classically undetermined. Without supersymmetry breaking, this is also the case for the size of the compact dimensions. Fayet-Iliopoulos terms generically fix the scale M of gauge symmetry breaking. The interplay with supersymmetry breaking can then stabilize the compact dimensions at a size 1/M, much smaller than the inverse supersymmetry breaking …
We consider a novel class of constraints on chiral superfields to obtain supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models in four spacetime dimensions, which strictly combine the internal symmetry breaking with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The resultant massless modes can be exclusively Nambu-Goldstone bosons without their complex partners and the goldstino that is charged under the internal symmetry. The massive modes show a peculiar relation among their masses and the scales of symmetry breakings.
We estimate the Witten index for a supersymmetric gauge theory with or without massless matter. For pure supersymmetric Yang Mills our result reproduces the results in the literature. For the known theories with dynamical symmetry breaking the Witten index is determined to be exactly zero. Our calculation sheds light on the possibility of dynamical supersymmetry breaking for those theories considered up to now unsolvable.
I put metastable supersymmetry breaking in a cosmological context. I argue that under reasonable assumptions, the cooling down early Universe favors metastable SUSY-breaking vacua over the stable supersymmetric vacua. To illustrate the general argument, I analyze the early-Universe history of the Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih model.
We describe local Calabi-Yau geometries with two isolated singularities at which systems of D3- and D7-branes are located, leading to chiral sectors corresponding to a semi-realistic visible sector and a hidden sector with dynamical supersymmetry breaking. We provide explicit models with a 3-family MSSM-like visible sector, and a hidden sector breaking supersymmetry at a meta-stable minimum. For singularities separated by a distance smaller than the string scale, this construction leads to a simple realization of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking in string theory. The models are simple eno…
Supersymmetry breaking via gaugino condensation is studied in vacua of heterotic M-theory with five-branes. We show that supersymmetry is still broken by a global mechanism and that the non-perturbative superpotential takes the standard form. When expressed in terms of low energy fields, a modification arises due to a threshold correction in the gauge kinetic function that depends on five-brane moduli. We also determine the form of the low energy matter field Kahler potential. These results are used to discuss the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters, in particular the question of universali…
We analyze the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) supersymmetry breaking in brane-world five dimensional theories compactified on the orbifold $S^1/\mathbb{Z}_2$. The SS breaking parameter is undetermined at the tree-level (no-scale supergravity) and can be interpreted as the Hosotani vacuum expectation value corresponding to the $U(1)_R$ group in five dimensional N=2 (ungauged) supergravity. We show that the SS breaking parameter is fixed at the loop level to either 0 or 1/2 depending on the matter content propagating in the bulk but in a rather model-independent way. Supersymmetry breaking is therefore fix…
Supersymmetric theories in four dimensions with chiral superfields have very rich BRS cohomology, which gives rise to potential anomalies in theories that contain composite antichiral spinor superfields. Assuming the coefficients are non-zero, absence of the anomalies would generate new constraints on theories. In addition, the anomalies give rise to a new kind of supersymmetry breaking which is quite different from the known kinds, and also naturally yields a zero cosmological constant after supersymmetry breaking.
We describe a simple recipe for obtaining local supersymmetry-breaking vacua in s-confining theories coupled to gauge singlets. This recipe gives rise to effective O'Raifeartaigh models in the IR, with calculable supersymmetry-breaking minima near the origin, and can be applied to both vector-like and chiral theories. Since the properties of the vacuum are largely determined by superpotential terms that are non-renormalizable in the UV, it is calculable even when all dimensionless couplings are taken to be of order one. By construction, the models preserve a large subgroup of the original glob…
We show that the brane configuration describing the Izawa-Yanagida-Intriligator-Thomas (IYIT) model with gauged U(1) subgroup of the global symmetry contains inconsistent geometry, implying that there exists a stable vacuum where supersymmetry is dynamically broken.
We study moduli stabilization with F-term uplifting. As a source of uplifting F-term, we consider spontaneous supersymmetry breaking models, e.g. the Polonyi model and the Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih model. We analyze potential minima by requiring almost vanishing vacuum energy and evaluate the size of modulus F-term. We also study soft SUSY breaking terms. In our scenario, the mirage mediation is dominant in gaugino masses. Scalar masses can be comparable with gaugino masses or much heavier, depending on couplings with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking sector.
We propose a new type of moduli stabilization scenario where the supersymmetric and supersymmetry-breaking minima are degenerate at the leading level. The inclusion of the loop-corrections originating from the matter fields resolves this degeneracy of vacua. Light axions are predicted in one of our models.
Banks has proposed a relation between the scale of supersymmetry breaking and the cosmological constant in de Sitter space. His proposal has a natural extension to a general FRW cosmology, in which the supersymmetry breaking scale is related to the Hubble parameter. We study one consequence of such a relation, namely that coupling constants change as the universe evolves. We find that the most straightforward extension of Banks' proposal is disfavored by experimental bounds on variation of the fine structure constant.
In this contribution, we discuss the possibility of meta-stable supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking vacua in a perturbed Seiberg-Witten theory with Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term. We found meta-stable SUSY breaking vacua at the degenerated dyon and monopole singular points in the moduli space at the nonperturbative level.
In rigid supersymmetry, generic models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking contain a light Goldstone boson, called the R axion. We show that supergravity effects explicitly break the R symmetry and give mass to the R axion. For visible and renormalizable hidden sector models, the massive R axion is free from astrophysical and cosmological problems. For nonrenormalizable hidden sector models, the R axion suffers from cosmological difficulties similar to those of the moduli fields in string theory.
