Higher-dimensional theories provide a promising framework for unified extensions of the supersymmetric standard model. Compactifications to four dimensions often lead to U(1) symmetries beyond the standard model gauge group, whose breaking scale is classically undetermined. Without supersymmetry breaking, this is also the case for the size of the compact dimensions. Fayet-Iliopoulos terms generically fix the scale M of gauge symmetry breaking. The interplay with supersymmetry breaking can then stabilize the compact dimensions at a size 1/M, much smaller than the inverse supersymmetry breaking scale 1/mu. We illustrate this mechanism with an SO(10) model in six dimensions, compactified on an orbifold.
We show that a quantum-mechanical N=2 supersymmetry is hidden in 4d mass spectrum of any gauge invariant theories with extra dimensions. The N=2 supercharges are explicitly constructed in terms of differential forms. The analysis can be extended to extra dimensions with boundaries, and for a single extra dimension we clarify a possible set of boundary conditions consistent with 5d gauge invariance, although some of the boundary conditions break 4d gauge symmetries.
In this paper, we propose a possible new approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem without supersymmetry and without extra spacetime dimensions. This approach relies on the finiteness of string theory and the conjectured stability of certain non-supersymmetric string vacua. One crucial ingredient in this approach is the idea of ``misaligned supersymmetry'', which explains how string theories may be finite even without exhibiting spacetime supersymmetry. This approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem is therefore complementary to recent proposals involving both large and s…
We discuss the potential impacts on the CMSSM of future LHC runs and possible electron-positron and higher-energy proton-proton colliders, considering searches for supersymmetry via MET events, precision electroweak physics, Higgs measurements and dark matter searches. We validate and present estimates of the physics reach for exclusion or discovery of supersymmetry via MET searches at the LHC, which should cover the low-mass regions of the CMSSM parameter space favoured in a recent global analysis. As we illustrate with a low-mass benchmark point, a discovery would make possible accurate LHC …
We have analyzed the interplay between Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking and general fermion (gaugino or gravitino) mass terms localized on the fixed point branes of the S^1/Z_2 orbifold. Analytic solutions for eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are found in all cases. All results are checked by numerical calculations that make use of regularized δ-functions. Odd and generically also even fermions are discontinuous at the brane fixed points, but in all cases the combination that couples to the brane is continuous. For CP-even brane mass terms supersymmetry restoration can take place when their…
These lectures on supersymmetry and extra dimensions are aimed at finishing undergraduate and beginning postgraduate students with a background in quantum field theory and group theory. Basic knowledge in general relativity might be advantageous for the discussion of extra dimensions. This course was taught as a 24+1 lecture course in Part III of the Mathematical Tripos in recent years. The first six chapters give an introduction to supersymmetry in four spacetime dimensions, they fill about two thirds of the lecture notes and are in principle self-contained. The remaining two chapters are dev…
We have explored Natural Supersymmetry (NSUSY) scenarios with low values of the $μ$ parameter which are characterised by higgsino-like Dark Matter (DM) and compressed spectra for the lightest MSSM particles, $χ^0_1$, $χ^0_2$ and $χ^\pm_1$. This scenario could be probed via monojet signatures, but as the signal-to-background ratio (S/B) is low we demonstrate that the 8 TeV LHC cannot obtain limits on the DM mass beyond those of LEP2. On the other hand, we have found, for the 13 TeV run of the LHC, that by optimising kinematical cuts we can bring the S/B ratio up to the 5(3)% level which would a…
We study supergravity models in four dimensions where the hidden sector is superconformal and strongly-coupled over several decades of energy below the Planck scale, before undergoing spontaneous breakdown of scale invariance and supersymmetry. We show that large anomalous dimensions can suppress Kahler contact terms between the hidden and visible sectors, leading to models in which the hidden sector is "sequestered" and anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking can naturally dominate, thus solving the supersymmetric flavor problem. We construct simple, explicit models of the hidden sector based…
It was recently shown how to break supersymmetry in certain $AdS_3$ spaces, without destabilizing the background, by using a ``double trace'' deformation which localizes on the boundary of space-time. By viewing spatial sections of $AdS_3$ as a compactification space, one can convert this into a SUSY breaking mechanism which exists uniformly throughout a large 3+1 dimensional space-time, without generating any dangerous tadpoles. This is a generalization of a Visser type infinite extra dimensions compactification. Although the model is not Lorentz invariant, the dispersion relation is relativi…
In this thesis we focus on the construction of models in which a supersymmetry breaking hidden sector is located on one fixed point of an extra dimensional interval and the effects are gauge mediated across this interval to the other fixed point where the supersymmetric standard model is located. We use the formalism of current correlators to encode supersymmetry breaking effects and explore flat, warped and deconstructed extra dimensions. We also apply these techniques to models of metastable supersymmetry breaking in N = 1 Supersymmetric Quantum Chromodynamics.
We analyze the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) supersymmetry breaking in brane-world five dimensional theories compactified on the orbifold $S^1/\mathbb{Z}_2$. The SS breaking parameter is undetermined at the tree-level (no-scale supergravity) and can be interpreted as the Hosotani vacuum expectation value corresponding to the $U(1)_R$ group in five dimensional N=2 (ungauged) supergravity. We show that the SS breaking parameter is fixed at the loop level to either 0 or 1/2 depending on the matter content propagating in the bulk but in a rather model-independent way. Supersymmetry breaking is therefore fix…
We show that natural supersymmetry can be embedded in a five-dimensional theory with supersymmetry breaking à la Scherk-Schwarz (SS). There is no 'gluino-sucks' problem for stops localized in the four-dimensional brane and gluinos propagating in the full five-dimensional bulk, and sub-TeV stops are easily accommodated. The $μ/ B_μ$ problem is absent as well; the SS breaking generates a Higgsino Dirac mass and no bilinear Higgs mass parameter in the superpotential is required. Moreover, for non-maximal SS twists leading to $\tan β\simeq 1$, the Higgs spectrum is naturally split, in agreement wi…
We discuss a new realization of $\mathcal{N}$-extended quantum-mechanical supersymmetry (QM SUSY) with central charges hidden in the four-dimensional (4D) mass spectrum of higher dimensional Dirac action with curved extra dimensions. We show that this $\mathcal{N}$-extended QM SUSY results from symmetries in extra dimensions, and the supermultiplets in this supersymmetry algebra correspond to the Bogomol'nyi--Prasad--Sommerfield states. Furthermore, we examine the model of the $S^2$ extra dimension with a magnetic monopole background and confirm that the $\mathcal{N}$-extended QM SUSY explains…
We analyze some features of the role that extra dimensions, of radius $R$ in the TeV$^{-1}$ range, can play in the soft breaking of supersymmetry and the spontaneous breaking of electroweak symmetry. We use a minimal model where the gauge and Higgs sector of the MSSM are living in the bulk of five dimensions and the chiral multiplets in a four-dimensional boundary. Supersymmetry is broken in the bulk by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism and transmitted to the boundary by radiative corrections. The particle spectrum is completely predicted as a function of a unique $R$-charge. The massless sector co…
We consider the problem of supersymmetry and electroweak breaking in a 5d theory compactified on an $S^{1}/Z_{2}$ orbifold, where the extra dimension may be large or small. We consider the case of a supersymmetry breaking 4d brane located at one of the orbifold fixed points with the Standard Model gauge sector, third family and Higgs fields in the 5d bulk, and the first two families on a parallel 4d matter brane located at the other fixed point. We compute the Kaluza-Klein mass spectrum in this theory using a matrix technique which allows us to interpolate between large and small extra dimensi…
We investigate a new realization of extended quantum-mechanical supersymmetry. We first show that an $\mathcal{N}=2$ quantum-mechanical supersymmetry is hidden in the four-dimensional (4D) spectrum of the Kaluza-Klein decomposition for the higher dimensional Dirac field, that is, Kaluza-Klein mode functions of 4D right-handed spinors and 4D left-handed ones form $\mathcal{N}=2$ supermultiplets. In addition to $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, we discover that an $\mathcal{N}$-extended supersymmetry ($\mathcal{N} = d+2\ (d+1)$ for $d=$ even (odd) extra dimensions) is further hidden in the 4D spect…
While the Standard Model is in good shape, there are many reasons to believe it is incomplete. There are high expectations that the LHC will shed light on some well studied possibilities, like technicolor and supersymmetry. Emboldened by this optimism, we consider some non-mainstream ideas that if established would change dramatically the way we view the world.
We present an N=1 superfield formulation of supersymmetric gauge theories with a compact extra dimension. The formulation incorporates the radion superfield and allows to write supersymmetric theories on warped gravitational backgrounds. We apply it to study the breaking of supersymmetry by the F-term of the radion, and show that, for flat extra dimensions, this leads to the same mass spectrum as in Scherk-Schwarz models of supersymmetry breaking. We also consider scenarios where supersymmetry is broken on a boundary of a warped extra dimension and compare them with anomaly mediated models.

Explicit supersymmetry breaking is studied in higher dimensional theories by having boundaries respect only a subgroup of the bulk symmetry. If the boundary symmetry is the maximal subgroup allowed by the boundary conditions imposed on the fields, then the symmetry can be consistently gauged; otherwise gauging leads to an inconsistent theory. In a warped fifth dimension, an explicit breaking of all bulk supersymmetries by the boundaries is found to be inconsistent with gauging; unlike the case of flat 5D, complete supersymmetry breaking by boundary conditions is not consistent with supergravit…
The clockwork mechanism would be completely spoiled by the presence of a cosmological constant in the bulk of its 5D construction, or by analogous terms in the discrete case. It is believed that supersymmetry is required to forbid the appearance of these fatal terms, thus apparently tying the fate of the clockwork to the presence of supersymmetry. In this letter we argue that a robust clockwork can be obtained also without supersymmetry, by providing a model for the clockwork/linear dilaton EFT where this protection is instead related to diffeomorphism invariance in a higher number of extra di…
Within the framework of supersymmetry, the particle content is extended in a way that each Higgs doublet is in a full generation. Namely in addition to ordinary three generations, there is an extra vector-like generation, and it is the extra slepton SU(2)_L doublets that are taken to be the two Higgs doublets. R-parity violating interactions contain ordinary Yukawa interactions. Breaking of supersymmetry and gauge symmetry are analyzed. Fermion and boson spectra are calculated. Phenomenological constraints and relevant new physics at Large Hadron Collider are discussed.
We propose a simple scenario of the dynamical supersymmetry breaking in four dimensional supergravity theories. The supersymmetry breaking sector is assumed to be completely separated as a sequestered sector from the visible sector, except for the communication by the gravity and U(1)_R gauge interactions, and the supersymmetry breaking is mediated by the superconformal anomaly and U(1)_R gauge interaction. Supersymmetry is dynamically broken by the interplay between the non-perturbative effect of the gauge interaction and Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term of U(1)_R which necessarily exists in supergrav…
Large-field inflation is an interesting and predictive scenario. Its non-trivial embedding in supergravity was intensively studied in the recent literature, whereas its interplay with supersymmetry breaking has been less thoroughly investigated. We consider the minimal viable model of chaotic inflation in supergravity containing a stabilizer field, and add a Polonyi field. Furthermore, we study two possible extensions of the minimal setup. We show that there are various constraints: first of all, it is very hard to couple an O'Raifeartaigh sector with the inflaton sector, the simplest viable o…
We revisit in some more detail a recent specific proposal for the breaking of the electroweak symmetry and of supersymmetry by a compact extra dimension. Possible mass terms for the Higgs and the matter hypermultiplets are considered and their effects on the spectrum analyzed. Previous conclusions are reinforced and put on firmer ground.
We propose a new framework for mediating supersymmetry breaking through an extra dimension. It predicts positive scalar masses and solves the supersymmetric flavor problem. Supersymmetry breaks on a ``source'' brane that is spatially separated from a parallel brane on which the standard model matter fields and their superpartners live. The gauge and gaugino fields propagate in the bulk, the latter receiving a supersymmetry breaking mass from direct couplings to the source brane. Scalar masses are suppressed at the high scale but are generated via the renormalization group. We briefly discuss t…
We consider supersymmetric theories with a warped extra dimension where supersymmetry is broken by boundary conditions that preserve an R-symmetry. It is shown that this supersymmetry breaking mechanism naturally invokes the Stuckelberg formalism for the gravitino in order to give a four-dimensional theory with a smooth massless limit.
The supersymmetric ``shining'' of free massive chiral superfields in extra dimensions from a distant source brane can trigger exponentially small supersymmetry breaking on our brane of order e^{-2 pi R}, where R is the radius of the extra dimensions. This supersymmetry breaking can be transmitted to the superpartners in a number of ways, for instance by gravity or via the standard model gauge interactions. The radius R can easily be stabilized at a size O(10) larger that the fundamental scale. The models are extremely simple, relying only on free, classical bulk dynamics to solve the hierarchy…
Phenomenological analysis to the R-parity violating supersymmetry with a vector-like extra generation is performed in detail. It is found that, via the trilinear couplings, the correct neutrino spectrum can be obtained. The Higgs mass rises to 125 GeV by new up-type Yukawa couplings of vector-like quarks with no need of very heavy superpartners. Phenomena of new heavy fermions at LHC are predicted.
We study the principles of the gauge symmetry and supersymmetry breaking due to the local or global discrete symmetries on the extra space manifold. We show that the gauge symmetry breaking by Wilson line is the special case of the discrete symmetry approach where all the discrete symmetries are global and act freely on the extra space manifold. As applications, we discuss the N=2 supersymmetric SO(10) and $E_8$ breaking on the space-time $M^4\times A^2$ and $M^4\times D^2$, and point out that similarly one can study any N=2 supersymmetric $SO(M)$ breaking. We also comment on the one-loop effe…
The production of a charged lepton (e/mu) pair with a large missing energy at a linear collider is discussed as a means of distinguishing the minimal supersymmetry (MSSM) scenario from that with large extra dimensions (ADD) for parameter ranges where the total cross sections are comparable for both. Analyses in terms of event shape variables, specifically sphericity and thrust, are shown to enable a clear discrimination in this regard.
We study the relationship between the family number of chiral fermions and the Wilson line phases, based on the orbifold family unification. We find that flavor numbers are independent of the Wilson line phases relating extra-dimensional components of gauge bosons, as far as the standard model gauge symmetry is respected. This feature originates from a hidden quantum-mechanical supersymmetry.
Supersymmetry breaking and compactification of extra space-time dimensions may have a common dynamical origin if our universe is spontaneously generated in the form of a four-dimensional topological or non-topological defect in higher dimensional space-time. Within such an approach the conventional particles are zero modes trapped in the core of the defect. In many cases solutions of this type spontaneously break all supersymmetries of the original theory, so that the low-energy observer from ``our'' universe inside the core would not detect supersymmetry. Since the extra dimensions are not co…
Theories with extra-dimensional coordinates provide interesting mechanisms to achieve the rupture of symmetries. Here we present a novel alternative to the usual geometric considerations to achieve supersymmetric breaking for an extra-dimensional Wess-Zumino model. A supersymmetric model is constructed where the superpotential contains an effective supersymmetric non renormalizable operator, which generates, after compactification, the explicitly rupture of supersymmetry for the excited Kaluza-Klein excitations. The supersymmetry breaking is, in turn, communicated, by the radiatives correction…
We study in some detail the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking. We find that it is feasible to spontaneously generate values of the Higgs mass parameters $μ$ and $B_μ$ consistent with radiative electroweak symmetry breaking. The model has a phenomenologically viable particle spectrum. Messenger sneutrinos with mass in the range 6 to 25 TeV can serve as cold dark matter. It is also possible to evade the cosmological domain wall problem in this scenario.
In supersymmetric models with scalar sequestering, superconformal strong dynamics in the hidden sector suppresses the low-energy couplings of mass dimension two, compared to the squares of the dimension one parameters. Taking into account restrictions on the anomalous dimensions in superconformal theories, I point out that the interplay between the hidden and visible sector renormalizations gives rise to quasi-fixed point running for the supersymmetric Standard Model squared mass parameters, rather than driving them to 0. The extent to which this dynamics can ameliorate the little hierarchy pr…
We show that in theories in which supersymmetry breaking is communicated by renormalizable perturbative interactions, it is possible to extract the soft terms for the observable fields from wave-function renormalization. Therefore all the information about soft terms can be obtained from anomalous dimensions and beta functions, with no need to further compute any Feynman diagram. This method greatly simplifies calculations which are rather involved if performed in terms of component fields. For illustrative purposes we reproduce known results of theories with gauge-mediated supersymmetry break…
We contrast the experimental signatures of low energy supersymmetry and the model of Universal Extra Dimensions and discuss various methods for their discrimination at hadron and lepton colliders. We study the discovery reach of hadron colliders for level 2 Kaluza-Klein modes, which would indicate the presence of extra dimensions. We also investigate the possibility to differentiate the spins of the superpartners and KK modes by means of the asymmetry method of Barr. We then review the methods for discriminating between the two scenarios at a high energy linear collider such as CLIC. We consid…
Perturbative breaking of supersymmetry in four-dimensional string theories predict in general the existence of new large dimensions at the TeV scale. Such dimensions can be consistent with perturbative unification up to the Planck scale in a class of string models and open the exciting possibility of lowering a part of the massive string spectrum at energies accessible to future accelerators. The main signature is the production of Kaluza-Klein excitations which have a very particular structure, strongly correlated with the supersymmetry breaking mechanism. We present a model independent analy…
We propose a supersymmetric extension of the standard model whose Higgs sector induces a spontaneous supersymmetry breaking by itself. Unlike the minimal extension, the current Higgs mass bound can be evaded even at the tree-level without the help of the soft breaking terms due to the usual hidden sector, as is reminiscent of the next to minimal case. We also have a possibly light pseudo-goldstino in our visible sector in addition to extra Higgs particles, both of which stem from supersymmetry breaking dynamics. In such a setup of visible supersymmetry breaking, we may see a part of supersymme…
It is generally believed that weak scale supersymmetry implies weak scale supergravity, in the sense that the masses of the gravitino and gravitationally coupled moduli have masses below 100 TeV. This paper presents a realistic framework for supersymmetry breaking in the hidden sector in which the masses of the gravitino and gravitational moduli can be much larger. This cleanly eliminates the cosmological problems of hidden sector models. Supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the visible sector by anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking. The framework is compatible with perturbative gauge …
A very large extra dimension may contain many localized branes. We discuss the possibility to formulate such models as a spin system where each spin indicates the supersymmetry direction preserved by the corresponding brane. In the evolution of the universe, the extra dimensions might have ended into a vacuum made of patches with different orientation of the spins, responsible for the observed breaking of supersymmetry. We discuss the limit where the separation of these patches is by very thin defects described as localization of gravitino masses.
We investigate and compare additional CP-even, CP-odd and charged scalar states appearing in two popular Beyond the Standard Model scenarios. We focus on the simplest possible Higgs sector within warped extra-dimensions and supersymmetry, with the aim to differentiate between them. In each case, we analyze the couplings of the new Higgs states, looking for distinguishing signatures. We show that the couplings of the Standard Model gauge bosons to the first Kaluza-Klein Higgs states of the extra-dimensional setup (CP-even, CP-odd and charged) are very similar to those of the heavy Higgs states …
We present a supersymmetric model in which the observed fermion masses and mixings are generated by localizing the three generations of matter and the two Higgs fields at different locations in a compact extra dimension. Supersymmetry is broken by the shining method and the breaking is communicated to standard model fields via gaugino mediation. Quark masses, CKM mixing angles and the mu term are generated with all dimensionless couplings of O(1). All dimensionful parameters are of order the five-dimensional Planck scale except for the size of the extra dimension which is of order the GUT scal…
We show some phenomenological implications for the dark matter problem of a class of models with deflected anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking in the context of the MSSM. This scenario can be naturally embedded in a brane world model with one compactified extra dimension. It turns out that in these models the neutralino is still the LSP and so a good candidate as cold dark matter. We found that the neutralino is quite a pure bino in almost all the parameter space. Moreover we computed the thermal relic density and we found wide cosmologically allowed regions for the neutralino.
We consider supersymmetry breaking due to a Scherk-Schwarz twist or localized mass terms in 6d ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory compactified on the orbifold $T^2/Z_2$. We show that the Scherk-Schwarz breaking in 6d is equivalent to the localized breaking with mass terms along the lines in extra dimensions. In the presence of the considered supersymmetry breaking, we find that there arises a finite one-loop mass correction to a brane scalar due to the KK modes of bulk gauge fields.
We investigate the formation of dynamical gaugino condensates and supersymmetry breaking in the compactifications of Horava-Witten theory with perturbative nonstandard embeddings. Specific models are considered where the underlying massless charged states of the condensing sector are determined by the spectra of $Z_2 \times Z_2 $ and $Z_4 $ orbifolds with nonstandard embeddings. We find among them viable examples where gaugino condensation is triggered on the wall with the weakest gauge coupling at $M_{GUT} $. In all these cases the magnitude of the condensate formed is below the energy scales…
In this thesis we have explored some of the phenomenological aspects of warped/flat extra dimensional theories and their interface with supersymmetry. We study the numerical impact of compactified warped extra dimension on the processes gg -> h and h -> γγ, which are of paramount importance in the context of Higgs search at the LHC. We compute radiative correction to the lightest neutral Higgs mass induced by the Kaluza-Klein (KK) towers of fermions and sfermions in a supersymmetric warped extra dimension model. Next we make a more formal renormalization group study of a supersymmetric model e…
We investigate the low-energy dynamics of $SU(N)$ gauge theories with one antisymmetric tensor field, $N - 4 + N_f$ antifundamentals and $N_f$ fundamentals, for $N_f \le 3$. For $N_f = 3$ we construct the quantum moduli space, and for $N_f < 3$ we find the exact quantum superpotentials. We find two large classes of models with dynamical supersymmetry breaking. The odd $N$ theories break supersymmetry once appropriate mass terms are added in the superpotential. The even $N$ theories break supersymmetry after gauging an extra chiral $U(1)$ symmetry.
In theories in which SUSY is broken on a brane separated from the MSSM matter fields, supersymmetry breaking is naturally mediated in a variety of ways. Absent other light fields in the theory, gravity will mediate supersymmetry breaking through the conformal anomaly. If gauge fields propagate in the extra dimension they, too, can mediate supersymmetry breaking effects. The presence of gauge fields in the bulk motivates us to consider the effects of new messenger fields with holomorphic and non-holomorphic couplings to the supersymmetry breaking sector. These can lead to contributions to the s…
The lightest Higgs scalar boson mass in supersymmetry can be raised significantly by extra vector-like quark and lepton supermultiplets with large Yukawa couplings but dominantly electroweak-singlet masses. I consider models of this type that maintain perturbative gauge coupling unification. The impact of the new particles on precision electroweak observables is found to be moderate, with the fit to Z-pole data as good or better than that of the Standard Model even if the new Yukawa couplings are as large as their fixed-point values and the extra vector-like quark masses are as light as 400 Ge…
A new model for the origin of dark energy is proposed based on the Casimir effect in a supersymmetry-breaking brane-world. Supersymmetry is assumed to be preserved in the bulk while broken on a 3-brane. Due to the boundary conditions imposed on the compactified extra dimensions, there is an effective Casimir energy induced on the brane. The net Casimir energy contributed from the graviton and the gravitino modes as a result of supersymmetry-breaking on the brane is identified as the observed dark energy, which in our construction is a cosmological constant. We show that the smallness of the co…
We contrast the experimental signatures of low energy supersymmetry and the model of Universal Extra Dimensions and discuss various methods for their discrimination at hadron colliders. We study the discovery reach of the Tevatron and the LHC for level 2 Kaluza-Klein modes, which would indicate the presence of extra dimensions. We find that with 100 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data the LHC will be able to discover the $γ_2$ and $Z_2$ KK modes as separate resonances if their masses are below 2 TeV. We also investigate the possibility to differentiate the spins of the superpartners and KK modes by means …
The discovery of the Higgs boson with a mass of about 125 GeV intimates us a possibility of a high-scale supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking model, where a sfermion mass scale is much higher than the electroweak scale. Although a general SUSY standard model can contribute to the low-energy flavor and/or CP-violating processes, the high-scale SUSY breaking model provides smaller signatures and therefore are less constrained, even in the presence of large flavor/CP violations of sfermions. However, a manner of gluino decay directly reflects the squark flavor structure and provides us a clue for the sf…
Recently, a mechanism for electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) was discussed, in which the scale of EWSB is set by the scale of an additional dimension R ~ Tev^-1. The mechanism involves supersymmetry, but broken in such a fashion that high (four-dimensional) momentum loops are cut off by the finite size of the radius. In a Kaluza-Klein decomposition, a hard cutoff seems to give a strong cutoff dependence, while summing the entire tower is not only cutoff insensitive, but actually finite. Such behavior is easily understood in a formulation that respects five-dimensional locality. Finally, we n…
In supersymmetric (SUSY) theories with extra dimensions the visible energy in sparticle decays can be significantly reduced and its energy distribution broadened, thus significantly weakening the present collider limits on SUSY. The mechanism applies when the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is a bulk state-- e.g. a bulk modulino, axino, or gravitino-- the size of the extra dimensions larger than ~$10^{-14}$ cm, and for a broad variety of visible sparticle spectra. In such cases the lightest ordinary supersymmetric particle (LOSP), necessarily a brane-localised state, decays to the Kaluz…
We have investigated moduli stabilization leading to hierarchical supersymmetry breakdown in racetrack models with two moduli fields simultaneously present in the effective racetrack superpotential. We have shown that stabilization of moduli occurs when a shift symmetry of the moduli space becomes gauged. This gauging results in a D-term contribution to the scalar potential that depends on moduli scalars. To break supersymmetry at a minimum created this way in the case where only a single combination of moduli is present in the superpotential one needs supergravity corrections. If the superpot…
Regarding ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) as a probe and extra dimensions as a possible ingredient of the fantastic ultrahigh-energy world, we discuss possible interplay between them. On the one hand small extra dimensions and Kaluza-Klein bursts present a feasible way to the origin of UHECRs. On the other hand large extra dimensions may change various interactions between particles at ultrahigh energies and therefore impact on air showers created by UHECRs. Conversely, UHECR data may tell us secrets veiled in extra dimensions.
We present a particle physics model based on a ten-dimensional (10D) super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory compactified on magnetized tori preserving four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. The low-energy spectrum contains the minimal supersymmetric standard model with hierarchical Yukawa couplings caused by a wavefunction localization of the chiral matter fields due to the existence of magnetic fluxes, allowing a semi-realistic pattern of the quark and the lepton masses and mixings. We show supersymmetric flavor structures at low energies induced by a moduli-mediated and an anomaly-mediated supe…
A way to break supersymmetry in perturbative superstring theory is the string version of the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. There, the fermions and bosons have mass splitting due to different compactification boundary conditions. We consider the implementation of this mechanism in abelian orbifold compactifications with Wilson line backgrounds. For $Z_N$ and $Z_N\times Z_M$ orbifolds, we give the possible $U(1)$ R-symmetries which determine the mass splitting, and thus, the supersymmetry breaking at the perturbative level. The phenomenlogical viability of this mechanism implies some dimension(s) to…
