Topological phases with large Chern numbers have important implications. They were previously predicted to exist by considering fabricated long-range interactions or multi-layered materials. Stimulated by recent wide interests in Floquet topological phases, here we propose a scheme to engineer large-Chern-number phases with ease by periodic quenching. Using a two-band system as an example, we theoretically show how a variety of topological phases with widely tunable Chern numbers can be generated by periodic quenching between two simple Hamiltonians that otherwise give low Chern numbers. The obtained large Chern numbers are explained through the emergence of multiple Dirac cones in the Floquet spectra. The transition lines between different topological phases in the two-band model are also explicitly found, thus establishing a class of easily solvable but very rich systems useful for further understandings and applications of topological phases in periodically driven systems.
We perform a sudden quench on the Haldane model with long range interactions, more specifically generalising to the next to next nearest neighbour hopping, referred to as the $N3$ model in our work. Such a model possesses both isotropic and multiple anisotropic (satellite) Dirac points which lead to a rich topological phase diagram consisting of phases with higher Chern number ($C$). Quenches between the topological and the non-topological phases of such an infinite system probe the effect of the presence of the anisotropic Dirac points on the non-equilibrium response of the topological system…
In this paper, we investigated the effects of periodic external potentials on properties of charge carriers in graphene using both the first-principles method based on density functional theory (DFT) and a theoretical approach based on a generalized effective spinor Hamiltonian. DFT calculations were done in a modified Kohn-Sham procedure that includes effects of the periodic external potential. Unexpected energy band gap opening and quenching were predicted for the graphene superlattice with two symmetrical sublattices and those with two unsymmetrical sublattices, respectively. Theoretical an…
We consider periodic quantum Hamiltonians on the torus phase space (Harper-like Hamiltonians). We calculate the topological Chern index which characterizes each spectral band in the generic case. This calculation is made by a semi-classical approach with use of quasi-modes. As a result, the Chern index is equal to the homotopy of the path of these quasi-modes on phase space as the Floquet parameter (θ) of the band is varied. It is quite interesting that the Chern indices, defined as topological quantum numbers, can be expressed from simple properties of the classical trajectories.
Quasi-periodic quantum spin chains were recently found to support many topological phases in the finite magnetization sectors. They can simulate strong topological phases from class A in arbitrary dimension that are characterized by first and higher order Chern numbers. In the present work, we use those findings to generate topological phases at finite magnetization densities that carry first Chern numbers. Given the reduced dimensionality of the spin chains, this provides a unique opportunity to investigate the bulk-boundary correspondence as well as the stability and quantization of the Cher…
We determine the effective total spin $J$ of local moments formed from acceptor states bound to Mn ions in GaAs by evaluating their magnetic Chern numbers. We find that when individual Mn atoms are close to the sample surface, the total spin changes from $J = 1$ to $J = 2$, due to quenching of the acceptor orbital moment. For Mn pairs in bulk, the total $J$ depends on the pair orientation in the GaAs lattice and on the separation between the Mn atoms. We point out that Berry curvature variation as a function of local moment orientation can profoundly influence the quantum spin dynamics of thes…
The high Chern number phases with the Chern number |C| > 1 are observed in this study of a periodically driven extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (E-SSH) model with a cyclic parameter. Besides the standard intra-dimer and the nearest-neighbor (NN) inter-dimer hopping of the SSH model, an additional next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping is considered in the E-SSH model. The cyclic parameter, which plays the role of a synthetic dimension, is invoked as a modulation of the hopping strengths. A rigorous analysis of different phase diagrams has shown multiple Floquet topological phase transitions among th…
Few level quantum systems driven by $n_\mathrm{f}$ incommensurate fundamental frequencies exhibit temporal analogues of non-interacting phenomena in $n_\mathrm{f}$ spatial dimensions, a consequence of the generalisation of Floquet theory in frequency space. We organise the fundamental solutions of the frequency lattice model for $n_\mathrm{f}=2$ into a quasi-energy band structure and show that every band is classified by an integer Chern number. In the trivial class, all bands have zero Chern number and the quasi-periodic dynamics is qualitatively similar to Floquet dynamics. The topological c…
The coupling between the spin and momentum degrees of freedom due to spin-orbit interactions (SOI) suggests that the strength of the latter can be modified by controlling the motion of the charge carriers. In this paper, we investigate how the effective SOI can be modulated by constraining the motion of charge carriers to curved waveguides thereby introducing real-space geometric curvature in their motion. The change in the SOI can in turn induce topological phase transitions in the system. Specifically, we study how the introduction of periodic sinusoidal curvature in nanowires with intrinsic…
We propose a platform for flat Chern band by subjecting two-dimensional Dirac materials -- such as graphene and topological insulator thin films -- to a periodic magnetic field, which can be created by the vortex lattice of a type-II superconductor. As a generalization of the $n=0$ Landau level, the flat band of Dirac fermion under a nonuniform magnetic field remains at zero energy, exactly dispersionless and topologically protected, while its local density of states is spatially modulated due to the magnetic field variation. In the presence of short-range repulsion, we find fractional Chern i…
Chirally stacked $N$-layer graphene is a semimetal with $\pm p^N$ band-touching at two nonequivalent corners in its Brillioun zone. We predict that an off-resonant circularly polarized light (CPL) drives chirally stacked $N$-layer graphene into a Floquet Chern Insulators (FCIs), a.k.a. quantum anomalous Hall insulators, with tunable high Chern number $C_F=\pm N$ and large gaps. A topological phase transition between such a FCI and a valley Hall (VH) insulator with high valley Chern number $C_v=\pm N$ induced by a voltage gate can be engineered by the parameters of the CPL and voltage gate. We …
A quantum quench is a nonequilibrium dynamics governed by the unitary evolution. We propose a two-band model whose quench dynamics is characterized by an arbitrary Hopf number belonging to the homotopy group $π_{3}(S^{2})=\mathbb{Z}$. When we quench a system from an insulator with the Chern number $C_{i}\in π_{2}(S^{2})=\mathbb{Z}$ to another insulator with the Chern number $C_{f} $, the preimage of the Hamiltonian vector forms links having the Hopf number $C_{f}-C_{i}$. We also investigate a quantum-quench dynamics for a four-band model carrying an arbitrary second-Chern number $N\in π_{4}(S^…
$Z_{2}$ and Chern topological phases such as newly discovered quantum spin Hall and original quantum Hall states hardly both co--exist in a single material due to their contradictory requirement on the time--reversal symmetry (TRS). We show that although the TRS is broken in systems with a periodically driving ac-field, an effective TRS can still be defined provided the ac--field is linearly polarized or certain other conditions are satisfied. The controllable TRS provides us with a route to manipulate $Z_{2} $ and Chern topological phases in a single material by tuning the polarization of the…
We study the topological gap labeling of general 3D quasicrystals and we find that every gap in the spectrum is characterized by a set of the third Chern numbers. We show that a quasi-periodic structure has multiple Brillouin zones defined by redundant wavevectors, and the number of states below a gap is quantized as an integer linear combination of volumes of these Brillouin zones. The associated quantum numbers to characterize energy gaps can be expressed as third Chern numbers by considering a formal relationship between an adiabatic charge pumping under cyclic deformation of the quasi-peri…
We introduce a simple method to realize and detect photonic topological Chern insulators with one-dimensional circiut quantum electrodynamics arrays. By periodically modulating the couplings of the array, we show that this one-dimensional model can be mapped into a two-dimensional Chern insulator model. In addition to allowing the study of photonic Chern insulators, this approach also provides a natural platform to realise experimentally Laughlin's pumping argument. Based on scattering theory of topological insulators and input-output formalism, we show that the photonic edge state can be prob…
Quasi-periodically driven quantum systems are predicted to exhibit quantized topological properties, in analogy with the quantized transport properties of topological insulators. We use a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond to experimentally study a synthetic quantum Hall effect with a two-tone drive. We measure the evolution of trajectories of two quantum states, initially prepared at nearby points in synthetic phase space. We detect the synthetic Hall effect through the predicted overlap oscillations at a quantized fundamental frequency proportional to the Chern number, which character…
In recent years, two-dimensional Dirac materials patterned with a superlattice structure have emerged as a rich platform for exploring correlated and topological quantum matter. In this work, we propose that by subjecting Dirac electrons to a periodic magnetic field with triangular lattice symmetry it is possible to realize a quantum critical phase of $N_f=3$ Dirac fermion species strongly coupled to an emergent gauge field, or 2+1-D quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$). We demonstrate explicitly that the QED$_3$ phase naturally arises from a Dirac composite fermion (CF) picture, where the period…
Inducing topological transitions by a time-periodic perturbation offers a route to controlling the properties of materials. Here we show that the adiabatic preparation of a non-trivial state involves a selective population of edge-states, due to exponentially-small gaps preventing adiabaticity. We illustrate this by studying graphene-like ribbons with hopping's phases of slowly increasing amplitude, as for, e.g., a circularly polarized laser slowly turned-on. The induced currents have large periodic oscillations, but flow solely at the edges upon time-averaging, and can be controlled by focusi…
We study the properties of the quantum states in the one-dimensional system with a shifted periodic potential in both the discrete model and the continuous model. With open boundary conditions, the edge states appear in the energy gaps which indicate non-trivial topological structures. The Chern numbers with respect to the Bloch vector and the potential shift angle are computed. In the limit of the continuous model, the Chern number of each band is exactly one. We demonstrate the particle number pumped by the adiabatically shift of the potential is directly related to the topological invariant…
Chern insulator or quantum anomalous Hall state is a topological state with integer Hall conductivity but in absence of Landau level. It had been well established on various two-dimensional lattices with periodic structure. Here, we report similar Chern insulators can also be realized on the quasicrystal with $5$-fold rotational symmetry. Providing the staggered flux through plaquettes, we propose two types of quasicrystalline Chern insulators. Their topological characterizations are well identified by the robustness of edge states, non-zero real-space Chern number, and quantized conductance. …
We consider a periodically $δ$-kicked Haldane type Chern insulator with the kicking applied in the $\hat{z}$ direction. This is known to behave as an inversion symmetry breaking perturbation, since it introduces a time-dependent staggered sub-lattice potential. We study here the effects of such driving on the topological phase diagram of the original Haldane model of a Hall effect in the absence of a net magnetic field. The resultant Floquet band topology is again that of a Chern insulator with the driving parameters, frequency and amplitude, influencing the inversion breaking mass $M$ of the …
We theoretically study the effect of magnetic moiré superlattice on the topological surface states by introducing a continuum model of Dirac electrons with a single Dirac cone moving in the time-reversal symmetry breaking periodic pontential. The Zeeman-type moiré potentials generically gap out the moiré surface Dirac cones and give rise to isolated flat Chern minibands with Chern number $\pm1$. This result provides a promising platform for realizing the time-reversal breaking correlated topological phases. In a $C_6$ periodic potential, when the scalar $U_0$ and Zeeman $Δ_1$ moiré potential s…
We propose characterization of the three-dimensional topological insulator by using the Chern number for the entanglement Hamiltonian (entanglement Chern number). Here we take the extensive spin partition of the system, that pulls out the quantum entanglement between up spin and down spin of the many-body ground state. In three dimensions, the topological insulator phase is described by the section entanglement Chern number, which is the entanglement Chern number for a periodic plane in the Brillouin zone. The section entanglement Chern number serves as an interpolation of the $Z_2$ invariants…

Integer-valued topological indices, characterizing nonlocal properties of quantum states of matter, are known to directly predict robust physical properties of equilibrium systems. The Chern number, e.g., determines the quantized Hall conductivity of an insulator. Using fermionic atoms in a periodically driven optical lattice, here we demonstrate experimentally that the Chern number determines also the far-from-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum system. Following the proposal of ref. [Wang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 185701 (2017)] and extending it to Floquet systems, we measure the linking n…
A scenario of non-Hermitian bulk--boundary correspondence proposed for one-dimensional topological insulators is adapted to a non-Hermitian Chern insulator to examine its applicability to two-dimensional systems. This scenario employs bulk geometry under a modified periodic boundary condition and boundary geometry under an open boundary condition. The bulk geometry is used to define a topological number, whereas the boundary geometry is used to observe the presence or absence of a topological boundary state. It is demonstrated that the bulk--boundary correspondence holds in a two-dimensional C…
We investigate the properties of a two-dimensional quasicrystal in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. In this configuration, the density of states (DOS) displays a Hofstadter butterfly-like structure when it is represented as a function of the magnetic flux per tile. We show that the low-DOS regions of the energy spectrum are associated with chiral edge states, in direct analogy with the Chern insulators realized with periodic lattices. We establish the topological nature of the edge states by computing the topological Chern number associated with the bulk of the quasicrystal. This topo…
In this work, we report original properties inherent to independent particles subjected to a magnetic field by emphasizing the existence of regular structures in the energy spectrum's outline. We show that this fractal curve, the well-known Hofstadter butterfly's outline, is associated to a specific sequence of Chern numbers that correspond to the quantized transverse conductivity. Indeed the topological invariant that characterizes the fundamental energy band depicts successive stairways as the magnetic flux varies. Moreover each stairway is shown to be labeled by another Chern number which m…
We provide an extensive look at Bott periodicity in the context of complex gapped topological phases of free fermions. In doing so, we remark on the existence of a product structure in the set of inequivalent phases induced by the external tensor product of vector bundles -- a structure which has not yet been explored in condensed-matter literature. Bott periodicity appears in the form of a generalized Dirac monopole built out of a given phase, which is equivalent to the product of a Dirac monopole phase with that same given phase. The complex K-theory cohomology ring is presented as a natural…
Topological band theory establishes a standardized framework for classifying different types of topological matters. Recent investigations have shown that hyperbolic lattices in non-Euclidean space can also be characterized by hyperbolic Bloch theorem. This theory promotes the investigation of hyperbolic band topology, where hyperbolic topological band insulators protected by first Chern numbers have been proposed. Here, we report a new finding on the construction of hyperbolic topological band insulators with a vanished first Chern number but a non-trivial second Chern number. Our model posse…
We investigate the localization properties of independent electrons in a periodic background, possibly including a periodic magnetic field, as e.g. in Chern insulators and in Quantum Hall systems. Since, generically, the spectrum of the Hamiltonian is absolutely continuous, localization is characterized by the decay, as $|x| \rightarrow \infty$, of the composite (magnetic) Wannier functions associated to the Bloch bands below the Fermi energy, which is supposed to be in a spectral gap. We prove the validity of a localization dichotomy, in the following sense: either there exist exponentially l…
The interplay of topological characteristics in real space and reciprocal space can lead to the emergence of unconventional topological phases. In this Letter, we implement a novel mechanism for generating higher-Chern flat bands on the basis of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) coupled to topological magnetic structures in the form of the skyrmion lattice. In particular, we discover a scenario for generating $|C|=2$ dispersionless electronic bands when the skyrmion periodicity and the moiré periodicity are matched. Following the Wilczek argument, the statistics of the charge-carrying excitations…
Topologically non-trivial Hamiltonians with periodic boundary conditions are characterized by strictly quantized invariants. Open questions and fundamental challenges concern their existence, and the possibility of measuring them in systems with open boundary conditions and limited spatial extension. Here, we consider transport in Hofstadter strips, that is, two-dimensional lattices pierced by a uniform magnetic flux which extend over few sites in one of the spatial dimensions. As we show, an atomic wavepacket exhibits a transverse displacement under the action of a weak constant force. After …
The present Chapter discusses methods by which topological Bloch bands can be prepared in cold-atom setups. Focusing on the case of Chern bands for two-dimensional systems, we describe how topological properties can be triggered by driving atomic gases, either by dressing internal levels with light or through time-periodic modulations. We illustrate these methods with concrete examples, and we discuss recent experiments where geometrical and topological band properties have been identified.
Realizing topological insulators is of great current interest because of their remarkable properties and possible future applications. There are recent proposals, based on Floquet analyses, that one can generate topologically nontrivial insulators by periodically driving topologically trivial ones. Here we address what happens if one follows the dynamics in such systems. Specifically, we present an exact study of the time evolution of a graphene-like system subjected to a circularly polarized electric field. We prove that, for infinite (translationally invariant) systems, the Chern number is c…
Fractional Chern insulators are the proposed phases of matter mimicking the physics of fractional quantum Hall states on a lattice without an overall magnetic field. The notion of Floquet fractional Chern insulators refers to the potential possibilities to generate the underlying topological bandstructure by means of Floquet engineering. In these schemes, a highly controllable and strongly interacting system is periodically driven by an external force at a frequency such that double tunneling events during one forcing period become important and contribute to shaping the required effective ene…
The pumping conductance of a disordered two-dimensional Chern insulator scales with increasing size and fixed disorder strength to sharp plateau transitions at well-defined energies between ordinary and quantum Hall insulators. When the disorder strength is scaled to zero as system size increases, the "metallic" regime of fluctuating Chern numbers can extend over the whole band. A simple argument leads to a sort of weighted equipartition of Chern number over minibands in a finite system with periodic boundary conditions: even though there must be strong fluctuations between disorder realizatio…
We demonstrate that the prototypical two-dimensional Chern insulator hosts exotic quantum multi-criticality in the presence of an appropriate periodic driving: a linear Dirac-like transition coexists with a nodal loop-like transition caused by emerging symmetries. The existence of multiple universality classes and scaling laws can be unambiguously captured by a single renormalization group approach based on the stroboscopic Floquet Hamiltonian, regardless of whether the topological transition is associated with the anomalous edge modes or not.
