The notion of unbiased orthogonal designs is introduced as a generalization among unbiased Hadamard matrices, unbiased weighing matrices and quasi-unbiased weighing matrices. We provide upper bounds and several constructions for mutually unbiased orthogonal designs. As an application, mutually quasi-unbiased weighing matrices for various parameters are obtained.
We study the connection between mutually unbiased bases and mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares, a wider class of squares which does not contain only the Latin squares. We show that there are four types of complete sets of mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares for the dimension $d=8$. We introduce the concept of physical striation and show that this is equivalent to the extraordinary supersquare. The general algorithm for obtaining the mutually unbiased bases and the physical striations is constructed and it is shown that the complete set of mutually unbiased physical stria…
We introduce the problem of constructing weighted complex projective 2-designs from the union of a family of orthonormal bases. If the weight remains constant across elements of the same basis, then such designs can be interpreted as generalizations of complete sets of mutually unbiased bases, being equivalent whenever the design is composed of d+1 bases in dimension d. We show that, for the purpose of quantum state determination, these designs specify an optimal collection of orthogonal measurements. Using highly nonlinear functions on abelian groups, we construct explicit examples from d+2 o…
Craigen introduced and studied signed group Hadamard matrices extensively and eventually provided an asymptotic existence result for Hadamard matrices. Following his lead, Ghaderpour introduced signed group orthogonal designs and showed an asymptotic existence result for orthogonal designs and consequently Hadamard matrices. In this paper, we construct some interesting families of orthogonal designs using signed group orthogonal designs to show the capability of signed group orthogonal designs in generation of different types of orthogonal designs.
It is known that a real symmetric circulant matrix with diagonal entries $d\geq0$, off-diagonal entries $\pm1$ and orthogonal rows exists only of order $2d+2$ (and trivially of order $1$) [Turek and Goyeneche 2019]. In this paper we consider a complex Hermitian analogy of those matrices. That is, we study the existence and construction of Hermitian circulant matrices having orthogonal rows, diagonal entries $d\geq0$ and any complex entries of absolute value $1$ off the diagonal. As a particular case, we consider matrices whose off-diagonal entries are 4th roots of unity; we prove that the orde…
In this paper we generalize the construction of binary self-orthogonal codes obtained from weakly self-orthogonal designs described by Tonchev in [12] in order to obtain self-orthogonal codes over an arbitrary field. We extend construction self-orthogonal codes from orbit matrices of self-orthogonal designs and weakly self-orthogonal 1-designs such that block size is odd and block intersection numbers are even described in [5]. Also, we generalize mentioned construction in order to obtain self-orthogonal codes over an arbitrary field. We construct weakly self-orthogonal designs invariant under…
A set of $b$ mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in $\mathbb{C}^d$ (for $d > 1$) comprises $bd$ vectors in $\mathbb{C}^d$, partitioned into $b$ orthogonal bases for $\mathbb{C}^d$ such that the pairwise angle between all vectors from distinct bases is $\arccos(1/\sqrt{d})$. The largest number $μ(d)$ of MUBs that can exist in $\mathbb{C}^d$ is at most $d+1$, but constructions attaining this bound are known only when $d$ is a prime power. A set of $b$ MUBs in $\mathbb{C}^d$ that cannot be enlarged, even by the first vector of a potential $(b+1)$-th MUB, is called strongly unextendible. Until now, onl…
The construction of optimal line packings in real or complex Euclidean spaces has shown to be a tantalizingly difficult task, because it includes the problem of finding maximal sets of equiangular lines. In the regime where equiangular lines are not possible, some optimal packings are known, for example, those achieving the orthoplex bound related to maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases. In this paper, we investigate the packing of subspaces instead of lines and determine the implications of maximality in this context. We leverage the existence of real or complex maximal mutually unbiased b…
Hadamard matrices, orthogonal designs and amicable orthogonal designs have a number of applications in coding theory, cryptography, wireless network communication and so on. Product designs were introduced by Robinson in order to construct orthogonal designs especially full orthogonal designs (no zero entries) with maximum number of variables for some orders. He constructed product designs of orders $4$, $8$ and $12$ and types $\big(1_{(3)}; 1_{(3)}; 1\big),$ $\big(1_{(3)}; 1_{(3)}; 5\big)$ and $\big(1_{(3)}; 1_{(3)}; 9\big)$, respectively. In this paper, we first show that there does not exis…
Binary self-orthogonal codes and balanced incomplete block designs are two combinatorial configurations that have been much studied because of their wide areas of application. In this paper, we have shown the distribution of (16; 6; 3)-designs in binary (25,12) self-orthogonal codes. The paper also presents the relationships among the codes with embedded designs.
In this paper, we show how certain three-class association schemes and orthogonal arrays give rise to partial geometric designs. We also investigate the connections between partial geometric designs and certain regular graphs having three or four distinct eigenvalues, three-class association schemes, orthogonal arrays of strength two and particular linear codes. We give various characterizations of these graphs, association schemes and orthogonal arrays in terms of partial geometric designs. We also give a list of infinite families of directed strongly regular graphs arising from the partial g…
Craigen introduced and studied {\it signed group Hadamard matrices} extensively in \cite{Craigenthesis, Craigen}. Livinskyi \cite{Ivan}, following Craigen's lead, studied and provided a better estimate for the asymptotic existence of signed group Hadamard matrices and consequently improved the asymptotic existence of Hadamard matrices. In this paper, we introduce and study signed group orthogonal designs. The main results include a method for finding signed group orthogonal designs for any $k$-tuple of positive integer and then an application to obtain orthogonal designs from signed group orth…
We consider the existence problem for a semi-cyclic holey group divisible design of type (n,m^t) with block size 3, which is denoted by a 3-SCHGDD of type (n,m^t). When t is odd and n\neq 8 or t is doubly even and t\neq 8, the existence problem is completely solved; when t is singly even, many infinite families are obtained. Applications of our results to two-dimensional balanced sampling plans and optimal two-dimensional optical orthogonal codes are also discussed.
Our purpose is to determine the complete set of mutually orthogonal squares of order $d$, which are not necessary Latin. In this article, we introduce the concept of supersquare of order $d$, which is defined with the help of its generating subgroup in $\mathbb{F}_d\times \mathbb{F}_d$. We present a method of construction of the mutually orthogonal supersquares. Further, we investigate the orthogonality of extraordinary supersquares, a special family of squares, whose generating subgroups are extraordinary. The extraordinary subgroups in $\mathbb{F}_d\times \mathbb{F}_d$ are of great importanc…
We introduce the notion of quasi-orthogonal cocycle. This is motivated in part by the maximal determinant problem for square $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices of size congruent to $2$ modulo $4$. Quasi-orthogonal cocycles are analogous to the orthogonal cocycles of algebraic design theory. Equivalences with new and known combinatorial objects afforded by this analogy, such as quasi-Hadamard groups, relative quasi-difference sets, and certain partially balanced incomplete block designs, are proved.
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) yields a type of optimal packing of lines in a Euclidean space. ETFs seem to be rare, and all known infinite families of them arise from some type of combinatorial design. In this paper, we introduce a new method for constructing ETFs. We begin by showing that it is sometimes possible to construct multiple ETFs for the same space that are "mutually unbiased" in a way that is analogous to the quantum-information-theoretic concept of mutually unbiased bases. We then show that taking certain tensor products of these mutually unbiased ETFs with other ETFs sometimes…
We study the problem of constructing mutually unbiased bases in dimension six. This approach is based on an efficient numerical method designed to find solutions to the quantum state reconstruction problem in finite dimensions. Our technique suggests the existence of previously unknown symmetries in Karlsson's non-affine family $K_6^{(2)}$ which we confirm analytically. Also, we obtain strong evidence that no more than three mutually unbiased bases can be constructed from pairs which contain members of some non-affine families of complex Hadamard matrices.
Based on maximally entangled states, we explore the constructions of mutually unbiased bases in bipartite quantum systems. We present a new way to construct mutually unbiased bases by difference matrices in the theory of combinatorial designs. In particular, we establish $q$ mutually unbiased bases with $q-1$ maximally entangled bases and one product basis in $\mathbb{C}^q\otimes \mathbb{C}^q$ for arbitrary prime power $q$. In addition, we construct maximally entangled bases for dimension of composite numbers of non-prime power, such as five maximally entangled bases in $\mathbb{C}^{12}\otimes…
Orthogonal designs are fundamental mathematical notions used in the construction of space time block codes for wireless transmissions. Designs have two important parameters, the rate and the decoding delay; the main problem of the theory is to construct designs maximizing the rate and minimizing the decoding delay. All known constructions of CODs are inductive or algorithmic. In this paper, we present an explicit construction of optimal CODs. We do not apply recurrent procedures and do calculate the matrix elements directly. Our formula is based on a cubic function in two binary n-vectors. In …
