We study the rational approximation properties of special manifolds defined by a set of polynomials with rational coefficients. Mostly we will assume the case of all polynomials to depend on only one variable. In this case the manifold can be viewed as a Cartesian product of polynomial curves and it is possible to generalize recent results concerning such curves with similar concepts. There is hope that the method leads to insights on how to treat more general manifolds defined by arbitrary polynomials with rational coefficients.
We refine a result of R. Benedetto in p-adic analysis in order to exhibit infinitely many quadratic polynomials with rational coefficients having a specified graph of rational preperiodic points.
Our goal in this work is to found a closed form for rational generat- ing functions, these generate a various families of polynomials and generalized polynomials, in order to get the general recursive formula satisfied by these polynomials.
We investigate the density of square-free values of polynomials with large coefficients over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$. Some interesting questions answered as special cases of our results include the density of square-free polynomials in short intervals, and an asymptotic for the number of representations of a large polynomial $N$ as a sum of a small $k$-th power and a square-free polynomial.
In this paper, we use the methods of Andrade, Rudnick and Soundarajan to prove a Theorem about Lower bounds of moments of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions associated to monic irreducible polynomials over function fields.
A polynomial with rational coefficients is said to be pure with respect to a rational prime $p$ if its Newton polygon has one slope. In this article, we prove that the number of irreducible factors of the $n$-th iterate of a pure polynomial over the rational field $\mathbb Q$ is bounded independent of $n$. In other words, we show that pure polynomials are {\em eventually stable}. Consequently, several eventual stability results available in literature follow; including the eventual stability of the polynomial $x^d+c\in\mathbb{Q}[x]$, where $c\ne 0,1$, is not a reciprocal of an integer. In addi…
For a subgroup of $PGL(2,q)$ we show how some irreducible polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q$ arise from the field of invariant rational functions. The proofs rely on two actions of $PGL(2,F)$, one on the projective line over a field $F$ and the other on the rational function field $F(x)$. The invariant functions in $F(x)$ are used to show that regular patterns exist in the factorization of certain polynomials into irreducible polynomials. We use some results about group actions and the orbit polynomial, whose proofs are included. An unusual connection to the conjugacy classes of $PGL(2,q)$ is sho…
Let $\mathbb F_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements, where $q$ is a power of a prime. We discuss recursive methods for constructing irreducible polynomials over $\mathbb F_q$ of high degree using rational transformations. In particular, given a divisor $D>2$ of $q+1$ and an irreducible polynomial $f\in \mathbb F_{q}[x]$ of degree $n$ such that $n$ is even or $D\not \equiv 2\pmod 4$, we show how to obtain from $f$ a sequence $\{f_i\}_{i\ge 0}$ of irreducible polynomials over $\mathbb F_q$ with $\mathrm{deg}(f_i)=n\cdot D^{i}$.
We find all quadratic post-critically finite (PCF) rational maps defined over the rationals. We describe an algorithm to search for possibly PCF maps. Using the algorithm, we eliminate all but twelve rational maps, all of which are verifiably PCF. We also give a complete description of possible rational preperiodic structures for quadratic PCF maps defined over Q.
Let $F$ be a univariate polynomial or rational fraction of degree $d$ defined over a number field. We give bounds from above on the absolute logarithmic Weil height of $F$ in terms of the heights of its values at small integers: we review well-known bounds obtained from interpolation algorithms given values at $d+1$ (resp. $2d+1$) points, and obtain tighter results when considering a larger number of evaluation points.
In 1985, Odoni showed that in characteristic $0$ the Galois group of the $n$-th iterate of the generic polynomial with degree $d$ is as large as possible. That is, he showed that this Galois group is the $n$-th wreath power of the symmetric group $S_d$. We generalize this result to positive characteristic, as well as to the generic rational function. These results can be applied to prove certain density results in number theory, two of which are presented here. This work was partially completed by the late R.W.K. Odoni in an unpublished paper.
We present a proof, which is conditional on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture for a specific abelian variety, that there do not exist rational numbers x and c such that x has exact period N = 6 under the iteration x |-> x^2 + c. This extends earlier results by Morton for N = 4 and by Flynn, Poonen and Schaefer for N = 5.
We study representation of square-free polynomials in the polynomial ring F[t] over a finite field F by polynomials in F[t][x]. This is a function field version of the well-studied problem of representing squarefree integers by integer polynomials, where it is conjectured that a separable polynomial f(x) with integer coefficients takes infinitely many squarefree values, barring some simple exceptional cases, in fact that the integers n for which f(n) is squarefree have a positive density. We show that if f(x) in F[t][x] is separable, with square-free content, of bounded degree and height, then…
We introduce the notion of "quasi-symmetric" polynomials, which is a generalization of the notion of symmetry, and is particularly suited to the setting of polynomial rings over finite fields. The properties of this new class of functions are studied. It is then shown that quasi-symmetric polynomials are very useful in splitting rational places in extensions of function fields over finite fields and thus may be used in constructing extensions with many rational places.
In this paper we consider Diophantine equations of the form $f(x)=g(y)$ where $f$ has simple rational roots and $g$ has rational coefficients. We give strict conditions for the cases where the equation has infinitely many solutions in rationals with a bounded denominator. We give examples illustrating that the given conditions are necessary. It turns out that such equations with infinitely many solutions are strongly related to Prouhet-Tarry-Escott tuples. In the special, but important case when $g$ has only simple rational roots as well, we can give a simpler statement. Also we provide an app…
The first and second moments are established for the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over the rational function field at the central point $s=\tfrac{1}{2}$ where the character $χ$ is defined by the Legendre symbol for polynomials over finite fields and runs over all monic irreducible polynomials $P$ of a given odd degree. Asymptotic formulae are derived for fixed finite fields when the degree of $P$ is large. The first moment obtained here is the function field analogue of a result due to Jutila in the number--field setting. The approach is based on classical analytical methods an…
Let $F(x,y)$ be a polynomial over the rationals. We show that if $F$ is not an expander (over the rationals) then it has a special multiplicative or additive form. For example if $F$ is a homogeneous non-expander polynomial then $F(x,y)=c(x+ay)^α$ or $F(x,y)=c(xy)^α.$ This is an extension of an earlier result of Elekes and Rónyai who described the structure of two-variate polynomials which are not expanders over the reals.
We construct families of explicit polynomials f with rational coefficients that are sums of squares of polynomials over the real numbers, but not over the rational numbers. Whether or not such examples exist was an open question originally raised by Sturmfels. We also study representations of f as sums of squares of rational functions with rational coefficients. In the case of ternary quartics, we prove that our counterexamples to Sturmfels' question are the only ones.
For each number field k, the Bombieri-Lang conjecture for k-rational points on surfaces of general type implies the existence of a polynomial f(x,y) in k[x,y] inducing an injection k x k --> k.
This paper continues discussions in the author's previous paper about the Misiurewicz polynomials defined for a family of degree $d \ge 2$ rational maps with an automorphism group containing the cyclic group of order $d$. In particular, we extend the sufficient conditions that the Misiurewicz polynomials are irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$. We also prove that the Misiurewicz polynomials always have an irreducible factor of large degree.
In this paper, we consider a one-parameter family of degree $d\ge 2$ rational maps with an automorphism group containing the cyclic group of order $d$. We construct a polynomial whose roots correspond to parameter values for which the corresponding map is post-critically finite with a certain dynamical portrait. Then we prove that the polynomial is irreducible in certain cases.
Since polynomials form a subsemigroup of the semigroup of rational functions, every character on rational functions is a character on polynomials. On the other direction, not every character on polynomials is the restriction of a character on rational functions. What are the characters on polynomials that can be extended to rational functions? In this work, we conjecture that the only characters that can be extended are those that depends on the degree, often called elementary. Also, we construct two example of character on polynomials, not elementaries, that cannot be extended to rational fun…
Let $μ_{q+1}$ denote the set of $(q+1)$-th roots of unity in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2 }$. We construct permutation polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ by using rational functions of any degree that induce bijections either on $μ_{q+1}$ or between $μ_{q+1}$ and $\mathbb{F}_q \cup \{\infty\}$. In particular, we generalize results from Zieve.
In this paper, we present new explicit simultaneous rational approximations converging sub-exponentially to the values of Bell polynomials at the points of the form $(γ, 1! (2a+1)ζ(2), 2!ζ(3),..., (m-1)!(a+1+(-1)^ma)ζ(m)),$ $m=1,2,...,a,$ $a\in{\mathbb N}.$
We classify the graphs that can occur as the graph of rational preperiodic points of a quadratic polynomial over $\bold Q$, assuming the conjecture that it is impossible to have rational points of period $4$ or higher. In particular, we show under this assumption that the number of preperiodic points is at most~$9$. Elliptic curves of small conductor and the genus~$2$ modular curves $X_1(13)$, $X_1(16)$, and $X_1(18)$ all arise as curves classifying quadratic polynomials with various combinations of preperiodic points. To complete the classification, we compute the rational points on a non-mod…
In this paper we study two questions related to exceptional behavior of preperiodic points of polynomials in $\mathbb{Q}[x]$. We show that for all $d\geq 2$, there exists a polynomial $f_d(x) \in \mathbb{Q}[x]$ with $2\leq \mathrm{deg}(f_d) \leq d$ such that $f_d(x)$ has at least $d + \lfloor \log_2(d)\rfloor$ rational preperiodic points. Furthermore, we show that for infinitely many integers $d$, the polynomials $f_d(x)$ and $f_d(x) + 1$ have at least $d^2 + d\lfloor \log_2(d)\rfloor - 2d + 1$ common complex preperiodic points.
Let $f \in Q(z)$ be a polynomial or rational function of degree 2. A special case of Morton and Silverman's Dynamical Uniform Boundedness Conjecture states that the number of rational preperiodic points of $f$ is bounded above by an absolute constant. A related conjecture of Silverman states that the canonical height $\hat{h}_f(x)$ of a non-preperiodic rational point $x$ is bounded below by a uniform multiple of the height of $f$ itself. We provide support for these conjectures by computing the set of preperiodic and small height rational points for a set of degree 2 maps far beyond the range …
We study a question on characterizing polynomials among rational functions of degree $>1$ on the projective line over an algebraically closed field that is complete with respect to a non-trivial and non-archimedean absolute value, from the viewpoint of dynamics and potential theory on the Berkovich projective line.
We introduce a basis of rational polynomial-like functions $P_0,\ldots,P_{n-1}$ for the free module of functions $Z/nZ\to Z/mZ$. We then characterize the subfamily of congruence preserving functions as the set of linear combinations of the functions $lcm(k)\,P_k$ where $lcm(k)$ is the least common multiple of $2,\ldots,k$ (viewed in $Z/mZ$). As a consequence, when $n\geq m$, the number of such functions is independent of $n$.
Let $K$ be a number field. Given a polynomial $f(x)\in K[x]$ of degree $d\ge 2$, it is conjectured that the number of preperiodic points of $f$ is bounded by a uniform bound that depends only on $d$ and $[K:\mathbb Q]$. However, the only examples of parametric families of polynomials with no preperiodic points are known when $d$ is divisible by either $2$ or $3$ and $K=\mathbb Q$. In this article, given any integer $d\ge 2$, we display infinitely many parametric families of polynomials of the form $f_t(x)=x^d+c(t)$, $c(t)\in K(t)$, with no rational preperiodic points for any $t\in K$.
We consider the finite set of isogeny classes of $g$-dimensional abelian varieties defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with endomorphism algebra being a field. We prove that the class within this set whose varieties have maximal number of rational points is unique, for any prime even power $q$ big enough and verifying mild conditions. We describe its Weil polynomial and we prove that the class is ordinary and cyclic outside the primes dividing an integer that only depends on $g$. In dimension $3$, we prove that the class is ordinary and cyclic and give explicitly its Weil polynomial, …
This article addresses the existence of $\Q$-rational periodic points for morphisms of projective space. In particular, we construct an infinitely family of morphisms on $¶^N$ where each component is a degree 2 homogeneous form in $N+1$ variables which has a $\Q$-periodic point of primitive period $\frac{(N+1)(N+2)}{2} + \lfloor \frac{N-1}{2}\rfloor$. This result is then used to show that for $N$ large enough there exists morphisms of $¶^N$ with $\Q$-rational periodic points with primitive period larger that $c(k)N^k$ for any $k$ and some constant $c(k)$.
We consider the polynomials $\displaystyle f(x)=x^d+c$, where $d\ge 2$ and $c\in\mathbb Q$. It is conjectured that if $d=2$, then $f$ has no rational periodic point of exact period $N\ge 4$. In this note, fixing some integer $d\ge 2$, we show that the density of such polynomials with a rational periodic point of any period among all polynomials $f(x)=x^d+c$, $c\in\Q$, is zero. Furthermore, we establish the connection between polynomials $f$ with periodic points and two arithmetic sequences. This yields necessary conditions that must be satisfied by $c$ and $d$ in order for the polynomial $f$ t…
Let $k$ be an algebraic closed field of characteristic zero. Let $K$ be the rational function field $K=k(t)$. Let $ϕ$ be a non isotrivial rational function in $K(z)$. We prove a bound for the cardinality of the set of $K$--rational preperiodic points for $ϕ$ in terms of the number of places of bad reduction and the degree $d$ of $ϕ$.
