The propagation of intense picosecond laser pulses in air in the presence of strong nonlinear self-action effects and air ionization is investigated experimentally and numerically. The model used for numerical analysis is based on the nonlinear propagator for the optical field coupled with the rate equations for the production of various ionic species and plasma temperature. Our results show that the phenomenon of plasma-driven intensity clamping, which is paramount in femtosecond laser filamentation, holds for picosecond pulses. Furthermore, the temporal pulse distortions are limited and the pulse fluence is also clamped. The resulting unique feature of the picosecond filamentation regime is the production of a broad, fully ionized air channel, continuous both longitudinally and transversely, which may be instrumental for numerous applications.
The introduction of mid-IR optical parametric chirped pulse amplifiers (OPCPAs) has catalyzed interest in multi-millijoule, infrared femtosecond pulse-based filamentation. As tunneling ionization is a fundamental first stage in these high-intensity laser-matter interactions, characterizing the process is critical to understand derivative topical studies on femtosecond filamentation and self-focusing. Here, we report constructive-elastic microwave scattering-based measurements of total electron count, electron number densities, and photoionization rates generated by 3.9 micron femtosecond mid-i…
We present space and time resolved measurements of the air hydrodynamics induced by ultrafast laser pulse excitation of the air gap between two electrodes at high potential difference. We explore both plasma-based and plasma-free gap excitation. The former uses the plasma left in the wake of femtosecond filamentation, while the latter exploits air heating by multiple-pulse resonant excitation of quantum molecular wavepackets. We find that the cumulative electrode-driven air density depression channel initiated by the laser plays the dominant role in the gap evolution leading to breakdown.
When a relativistic intensity laser interacts with the surface of a solid density target, suprathermal electron currents are subject to Weibel instability filamentation when propagating through the thermal population of the bulk target. We present time resolved shadowgraphy of radial ionization front expansion and Weibel instability filamentation within a thin, sub-micron, sheet initiated by irradiation with a short pulse, high intensity laser. High temporal (100 fs) and spatial (1 $μ$m) resolution shadowgraphy of the interaction reveals a relativistic expansion of the ionization front within …
Supercontinuum (SC) light source has advanced ultrafast laser spectroscopy in condensed matter science, biology, physics, and chemistry. Compared to the frequently used photonic crystal fibers and bulk materials, femtosecond laser filamentation in gases is damage-immune for supercontinuum generation. A bottleneck problem is the strong jitters from filament induced self-heating at kHz repetition rate level. We demonstrate stable kHz supercontinuum generation directly in air with multiple mJ level pulse energy. This is achieved by applying an external DC electric field to the air plasma filament…
In the world of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials, the plasma is unique for its natural ENZ properties at the plasma frequency (wp). However, for the air plasma during femtosecond laser filamentation with wp in terahertz (THz) band, which is also known as a broadband THz emitter, the possible ENZ effect has long been neglected. In this work, interactions between the laser plasma in air and the radiated THz waves were investigated, and the THz resonance absorption at the ENZ point, which gave rise to the generation of surface plasmon waves, has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated…
Nonlinear self-guided propagation of intense long-wave infrared (LWIR) laser pulses is of significant recent interest owing to the high critical power for self-focusing collapse at long wavelengths. This promises transmission of very high power in a single filament as opposed to beam breakup and multi-filamentation. Here, using the most current picture of LWIR ionization processes in air, we present extensive simulations showing that isolated avalanche sites centered on aerosols can arrest self-focusing, providing a route to self-guided propagation of moderate intensity LWIR pulses in outdoor …
Sub-nanosecond delays of light emitted by streamer in atmospheric pressure air: analysis of N$_2$(C$^3Π_u$) and N$_2^+($B$^2Σ_u^{+}$) emissions and fundamental streamer structure
Understanding the formation and long-timescale evolution of atmospheric plasmas produced by ultrashort, long wavelength IR (LWIR) pulses is an important but partially understood problem. Of particular interest are plasmas produced in air with a peak laser intensity $\sim$10$^{12}$ W/cm$^2$, the so-called clamping intensity observed in LWIR atmospheric guiding experiments where tunneling and multi-photon ionization operative at near-IR or shorter wavelengths are inoperative. We find that avalanche breakdown on the surface of aerosol (dust) particles can act to seed the breakdown of air observed…
Ultrashort electron beams with femtosecond to picosecond bunch durations offer unique opportunities to explore active research areas ranging from ultrafast structural dynamics to ultra-high dose-rate radiobiological studies. We present a straightforward method to generate MeV-ranged electron beams in ambient air through the tight focusing of a few-cycle, mJ-class femtosecond IR laser. At one meter from the source, the highest measured dose rate of 0.15 Gy/s exceeds the yearly dose limit in less than one second and warrants the implementation of radiation protection. Two-dimensional Particle-In…
Formation of near-cathode plasma at the instant of breakdown of the air gap was studied by the methods of picosecond laser probing. It was demonstrated that 1-2 ns after a sharp rise of the current through the discharge gap dense plasma clots with Ne~10^20 cm^-3 and dNe/dx ~ 10^24 cm^-4 are formed on the cathode surface. It was shown that these highly ionized regions lead to initiation and development of the spark channel originating from the cathode. We propose that the observed formations correspond to erosive plasma formed from the cathode material.
