The problem of multi-area interchange scheduling in the presence of stochastic generation and load is considered. A new interchange scheduling technique based on a two-stage stochastic minimization of overall expected operating cost is proposed. Because directly solving the stochastic optimization is intractable, an equivalent problem that maximizes the expected social welfare is formulated. The proposed technique leverages the operator's capability of forecasting locational marginal prices (LMPs) and obtains the optimal interchange schedule without iterations among operators.
The ambitious CO2 emission targets of the Paris agreements are achievable only with renewable energy, CO2-free power generation, new policies, and planning. The main motivation of this paper is that future green fuels from power-to-X assets should be produced from power with the lowest possible emissions while still keeping the cost of electricity low. To this end we propose a power-to-X scheduling framework that is capable of co-optimizing CO2 emission intensity and electricity prices in the day-ahead electricity market scheduling. Three realistic models for local production units are develop…
Natural disasters require repairing all damaged components in electricity distribution networks. Optimal scheduling repair crews to minimize the aggregate duration of interruptions reduces the harm. We consider the fact that the number of switches is much smaller than the number of edges. The problem is modeled by a parallel identical machine scheduling with group soft precedence constraints to minimize the total weighted energization time. We propose an LP-based list scheduling algorithm and a conversion algorithm and analyze their theoretical performances.

Wireless charging technology provides a solution to the insufficient battery life of electric vehicles (EVs). However, the conflict of interests between wireless charging lanes (WCLs) and EVs is difficult to resolve. In the day-ahead electricity market, considering the revenue of WCLs caused by the deviation between actual electricity sales and pre-purchased electricity, as well as endurance and traveling experience of EVs, this paper proposes a charging scheduling algorithm based on a double-layer game model. In lower layer, the potential game is used to model the multi-vehicle game of vehicl…
Tie-line scheduling in multi-area power systems in the US largely proceeds through a market-based mechanism called Coordinated Transaction Scheduling (CTS). We analyze this market mechanism through a game-theoretic lens. Our analysis characterizes the effect of market liquidity, market participants' forecasts about inter-area price spreads, transactions fees and coupling of CTS markets with up-to-congestion virtual transactions. Using real data, we empirically verify that CTS bidders can employ simple learning algorithms to discover Nash equilibria that support the conclusions drawn from equil…
Power systems are shifted from conventional bulk generation toward renewable generation. This trend leads to the frequency security problem due to the decline of system inertia. On the other hand, natural gas-fired units are frequently scheduled to provide operational flexibility due to their fast adjustment ability. The interdependence between power and natural gas systems is thus intensified. In this paper, we study the frequency constrained scheduling problem from the perspective of an integrated electricity-gas system under variable wind power. We propose a distributionally robust (DR) cha…
Mobile energy storage devices (MESDs) operate as medium- or large-sized batteries that can be loaded onto electric trucks and connected to charging stations to provide various ancillary services for distribution grids. This paper proposes a new strategy for MESD operation, in which their power outputs and paths are co-optimally scheduled to minimize the total energy loss in both power and transportation networks. The distances moved by MESDs and time at different locations are modeled using a set of linear equations, considering the time-varying traffic flow. The linear transit model is integr…
The emerging paradigm of interconnected microgrids advocates energy trading or sharing among multiple microgrids. It helps make full use of the temporal availability of energy and diversity in operational costs when meeting various energy loads. However, energy trading might not completely absorb excess renewable energy. A multi-energy management framework including fuel cell vehicles, energy storage, combined heat and power system, and renewable energy is proposed, and the characteristics and scheduling arrangements of fuel cell vehicles are considered to further improve the local absorption …
Constant rise in energy consumption that comes with the population growth and introduction of new technologies has posed critical issues such as efficient energy management on the consumer side. That has elevated the importance of the use of renewable energy sources, particularly photovoltaic (PV) system and wind turbine. This work models and discusses design options based on the hybrid power system of grid and battery storage. The effects of installed capacity on renewable penetration (RP) and cost of electricity (COE) are investigated for each modality. For successful operation of hybrid pow…
The interactions of the natural gas (NG) network and the electricity system are increased by using gas-fired generation units, which use NG to produce electricity. There are various uncertainty sources such as the forced outage of generating units or market price fluctuations that affect the economic operation of both NG and electricity systems. This study focuses on the steady-state formulation of the integrated NG transmission grid and electricity system by considering the uncertainty of electricity market price based on information gap decision theory. The higher and lower costs than the ex…

To address the issue that Lagrangian dual function based algorithms cannot guarantee convergence and global optimality for decentralized multi-area security constrained unit commitment (M-SCUC) problems, a novel decomposition and coordination method using MILP (mixed integer linear programming) value functions is proposed in this paper. Each regional system operator sets the tie-line power injections as variational parameters in its regional SCUC model, and utilizes a finite algorithm to generate a MILP value function, which returns the optimal generation cost for any given interchange schedul…
The price of solar panels is decreasing rapidly and governments around the world are investing in solar power plants to increase the portion of solar energy in the smart grid. The price of electricity produced by solar power plants is much cheaper than conventional thermal power plants and innovation in solar cells is further increasing the divide. Consequently, setting up solar power plants will decrease electricity spot prices on average. However, the topology of the power grid must be considered while setting up solar power plants so that full benefits of cheap solar power can be gained by …
In this report, we provide a technical sequence on tackling the solar PV and demand forecast as well as optimal scheduling problem proposed by the IEEE-CIS 3rd technical challenge on predict + optimize for activity and battery scheduling. Using the historical data provided by the organizers, a simple pre-processing approach with a rolling window was used to detect and replace invalid data points. Upon filling the missing values, advanced time-series forecasting techniques, namely tree-based methods and refined motif discovery, were employed to predict the baseload consumption on six different …
Because of increasing amounts of intermittent and distributed generators in power systems, many demand response programs have been developed to schedule flexible energy consumption. However, proper benchmarks for comparing these methods are lacking, especially when decisions are made based on information which is repeatedly updated. This paper presents a new benchmarking tool designed to bridge this gap. Surveys that classify flexibility planning algorithms were an input to define the benchmarking standards. The framework can be used for different objectives and under diverse conditions faced …
The increasing number of gas-fired units has significantly intensified the coupling between power and gas networks. Traditionally, the nonlinearity and nonconvexity in gas flow equations, together with renewable-induced stochasticity, result in a computationally expensive model for unit commitment in electricity-gas coupled integrated energy systems (IES). To accelerate stochastic day-ahead scheduling, we applied and modified Progressive Hedging (PH), a heuristic approach that can be computed in parallel to yield scenario-independent unit commitment. By applying a termination and enumeration t…
In the context of transition towards cleaner and sustainable energy production, microgrids have become an effective way for tackling environmental pollution and energy crisis issues. With the increasing penetration of renewables, how to coordinate demand response and renewable generations is a critical and challenging issue in the field of microgrid scheduling. To this end, a bi-level scheduling model is put forward for isolated microgrids with consideration of multi-stakeholders in this paper, where the lower- and upper-level models respectively aim to the minimization of user cost and microg…

The electricity sector transition requires substantial increases in residential demand response capacity, yet Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) adoption remains limited by user interaction barriers requiring translation of everyday preferences into technical parameters. While large language models have been applied to energy systems as code generators and parameter extractors, no existing implementation deploys LLMs as autonomous coordinators managing the complete workflow from natural language input to multi-appliance scheduling. This paper presents an agentic AI HEMS where LLMs autonomou…
In this paper, we study the peak-aware energy scheduling problem using the competitive framework with machine learning prediction. With the uncertainty of energy demand as the fundamental challenge, the goal is to schedule the energy output of local generation units such that the electricity bill is minimized. While this problem has been tackled using classic competitive design with worst-case guarantee, the goal of this paper is to develop learning-assisted competitive algorithms to improve the performance in a provable manner. We develop two deterministic and randomized algorithms that are p…
In recent years, it has become crucial to improve the resilience of electricity distribution networks (DNs) against storm-induced failures. Microgrids enabled by Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) can significantly help speed up re-energization of loads, particularly in the complete absence of bulk power supply. We describe an integrated approach which considers a pre-storm DER allocation problem under the uncertainty of failure scenarios as well as a post-storm dispatch problem in microgrids during the multi-period repair of the failed components. This problem is computationally challenging …
This work presents a suite of two optimisation models for the short-term scheduling and redispatch of a virtual power plant (VPP) composed of a wind farm and a Li-ion battery, that participates in the day-ahead energy and secondary regulation reserve markets of the Iberian electricity market. First, a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer linear programming model is used to obtain the VPP's generation and reserve schedule and the opportunity cost of the energy stored in the battery. The model has an hourly resolution and a look-ahead period beyond the markets' scheduling horizon and considers the…
The increased uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) leads to increased demand for electricity, and sometimes pressure on power grids. Uncoordinated charging of EVs may result in stress on distribution networks, and often some form of optimization is required in the charging process. Optimal coordinated charging is a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) in nature, with objective functions such as minimum price charging and minimum disruptions to the grid. In this manuscript, we propose a general multi-objective EV charging/discharging schedule (MOEVCS) framework, where the time of use (TOU) …
As the number of electric vehicles (EVs) significantly increases, the excessive charging demand of parked EVs in the charging station may incur an instability problem to the electricity network during peak hours. For the charging station to take a microgrid (MG) structure, an economical and energy-efficient power management scheme is required for the power provision of EVs while considering the local load demand of the MG. For these purposes, this study presents the power management scheme of interdependent MG and EV fleets aided by a novel EV charg-ing/discharging scheduling algorithm. In thi…
This paper proposes a safe reinforcement learning algorithm for generation bidding decisions and unit maintenance scheduling in a competitive electricity market environment. In this problem, each unit aims to find a bidding strategy that maximizes its revenue while concurrently retaining its reliability by scheduling preventive maintenance. The maintenance scheduling provides some safety constraints which should be satisfied at all times. Satisfying the critical safety and reliability constraints while the generation units have an incomplete information of each others' bidding strategy is a ch…
The increasing penetration of intermittent renewables, storage devices, and flexible loads is introducing operational challenges in distribution grids. The proper coordination and scheduling of these resources using a distributed approach is warranted, and can only be achieved through local retail markets employing transactive energy schemes. To this end, we propose a distribution-level retail market operated by a Distribution System Operator (DSO), which schedules DERs and determines the real-time distribution-level Locational Marginal Price (d-LPM). The retail market is built using a distrib…
The rapid escalation in plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and their uncoordinated charging patterns pose several challenges in distribution system operation. Some of the undesirable effects include overloading of transformers, rapid voltage fluctuations, and over/under voltages. While this compromises the consumer power quality, it also puts on extra stress on the local voltage control devices. These challenges demand for a well-coordinated and power network-aware charging approach for PEVs in a community. This paper formulates a real-time electric vehicle charging scheduling problem as an mixe…
Despite the promising outlook, the numerous economic and environmental benefits of offshore wind energy are still compromised by its high operations and maintenance (O&M) expenditures. On one hand, offshore-specific challenges such as site remoteness, harsh weather, transportation requirements, and production losses, significantly inflate the O&M costs relative to land-based wind farms. On the other hand, the uncertainties in weather conditions, asset degradation, and electricity prices largely constrain the farm operator's ability to identify the time windows at which maintenance is possible,…
