Full ab initio band structure analysis of interband and intraband contributions for third harmonic generation coefficient of bulk silicon: implementation and application of the sum-over-states
We fully implement the Aversa and Sipe sum-over-states formulism and make a full ab initio band structure analysis of interband and intraband contributions for the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of bulk silicon. The band structure and momentum matrix elements were calculated by using the highly accurate all-electron full potential linearized augmented plane wave method within the local density approximation. The convergence tests including the scissor correction with different k-points meshes and empty states were performed. Both real and imaginary parts of susceptibility were directly calculated and checked by the Kramers-Kronig relation. The converged results are compared with other theoretical and experimental ones and in agreement with the recent ab initio real-time-based calculation. The nonlinear optical coefficient comes from three parts: the pure interband contribution (Pinter), the modulation of interband terms by intraband terms (Pmod), and the intraband contribution (Jintra). For each part, the origin of enhanced peaks is explored by tracing the sum-over-states process. The interband contribution is found to be dramatically modulated by the intraband contribution.
Hot electrons generated from the decay of localized surface plasmons in metallic nanostructures have the potential to transform photocatalysis, photodetection and other optoelectronic applications. However, the understanding of hot-carrier generation in realistic nanostructures, in particular the relative importance of interband and intraband transitions, remains incomplete. Here we report theoretical predictions of hot-carrier generation rates in spherical nanoparticles of the noble metals silver, gold and copper with diameters up to 30 nanometers obtained from a novel atomistic linear-scalin…
Flat bands in twisted moire superlattices support a variety of topological and strongly correlated phenomena along with easily tunable electrical and optical properties. Here, we demonstrate the existence of tunable, long-lived, and flat intraband and interband terahertz plasmons in twisted double bilayer graphene. We show that the interband plasmons originate from the presence of a Van Hove singularity in the joint density of states and a finite Berry connection between the pair of bands involved. We find that the gapped interband plasmon mode has a universal dispersion, and the plasmon gap i…
The temperature dependence of the optical properties of the delafossite PdCoO$_2$ has been measured in the a-b planes over a wide frequency range. The optical conductivity due to the free-carrier (intraband) response falls well below the interband transitions, allowing the plasma frequency to be determined from the $f$-sum rule. Drude-Lorentz fits to the complex optical conductivity yield estimates for the free-carrier plasma frequency and scattering rate. The in-plane plasma frequency has also been calculated using density functional theory. The experimentally-determined and calculated values…
We investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in graphene with a quantum master equation approach. The simulations reproduce the observed enhancement in HHG in graphene under elliptically polarized light [N. Yoshikawa et al, Science 356, 736 (2017)]. On the basis of a microscopic decomposition of the emitted high-order harmonics, we find that the enhancement in HHG originates from an intricate nonlinear coupling between the intraband and interband transitions that are respectively induced by perpendicular electric field components of the elliptically polarized light. Furthermore, we reve…
We recently developed an approach for calculation of the electron-phonon (electron-ion in a more general case) coupling in materials based on tight-binding molecular dynamics simulations. In the present work we utilize this approach to study partial contributions of inter- and intraband electron scattering events into total electron-phonon coupling in Al, Au, Cu elemental metals and in AlCu alloy. We demonstrate that the interband scattering plays an important role in electron-ion energy exchange process in Al and AlCu, whereas intraband $d-d$ transitions are dominant in Au and Cu. Moreover, i…
We derive and analyze the longitudinal and the anomalous Hall conductivity for a general momentum-block-diagonal two-band model. This model captures a broad spectrum of physically very different systems including Néel antiferromagnetic and spiral spin density waves as well as models that involve spin-orbit interaction and are known to show topological properties. We present a complete microscopic derivation for finite temperature and constant scattering rate $Γ$ that is diagonal and equal, but arbitrarily large for both bands. We identify two criteria that allow for a unique and physically mot…
The existence of large nonlinear optical coefficients is one of the preconditions for using nonlinear optical materials in nonlinear optical devices. For a crystal, such large coefficients can be achieved by matching photon energies with resonant energies between different bands, and so the details of the crystal band structure play an important role. Here we demonstrate that large third-order nonlinearities can also be generally obtained by a different strategy: As any of the incident frequencies or the sum of any two or three frequencies approaches zero, the doped or excited populations of e…
We extend the first-principles analysis of attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to two-dimensional materials. As an example of two-dimensional materials, we apply the analysis to monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and compute its transient optical properties under intense few-cycle infrared laser pulses. Nonadiabatic features are observed in the computed transient absorption spectra. To elucidate the microscopic origin of these features, we analyze the electronic structure of h-BN with density functional theory and investigate the dynamics of specific energy bands with a simple t…
We present an optical conductivity study of the multifold semimetal PdGa, performed in a broad spectral range (100 - 20000 cm-1; 12 meV - 2.5 eV) down to T = 10 K. The conductivity at frequencies below 4000 cm-1 is dominated by free carriers while at higher frequencies interband transitions provide the major contribution. The spectra do not demonstrate a significant temperature evolution: only the intraband part changes as a function of temperature with the plasma frequency remaining constant. The interband contribution to the conductivity exhibits a broad peak at around 5500 cm-1 and increase…
TaIrTe$_4$ is an example of a candidate Weyl type-II semimetal with a minimal possible number of Weyl nodes. Four nodes are reported to exist a single plane in $k$-space. The existence of a conical dispersion linked to Weyl nodes has yet to be shown experimentally. Here we use optical spectroscopy as a probe of the band structure on a low-energy scale. Studying optical conductivity allows us to probe intraband and interband transitions with zero momentum. In TaIrTe$_4$, we observe a narrow Drude contribution and an interband conductivity that may be consistent with a tilted linear band dispers…
Twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides are ideal platforms to study flat-band phenomena. In this paper, we investigate flat-band plasmons in the hole-doped twisted bilayer MoS$_2$ (tb-MoS$_2$) by employing a full tight-binding model and the random phase approximation. When considering lattice relaxations in tb-MoS$_2$, the flat band is not separated from remote valence bands, which makes the contribution of interband transitions in transforming the plasmon dispersion and energy significantly different. In particular, low-damped and quasi-flat plasmons emerge if we only consider intra…
