Vacuum magnetic birefringence was predicted long time ago and is still lacking a direct experimental confirmation. Several experimental efforts are striving to reach this goal, and the sequence of results promises a success in the next few years. This measurement generally is accompanied by the search for hypothetical light particles that couple to two photons. The PVLAS experiment employs a sensitive polarimeter based on a high finesse Fabry-Perot cavity. In this paper we report on the latest experimental results of this experiment. The data are analysed taking into account the intrinsic birefringence of the dielectric mirrors of the cavity. Besides the limit on the vacuum magnetic birefringence, the measurements also allow the model-independent exclusion of new regions in the parameter space of axion-like and milli-charged particles. In particular, these last limits hold also for all types of neutrinos, resulting in a laboratory limit on their charge.
This paper describes the 25 year effort to measure vacuum magnetic birefringence and dichroism with the PVLAS experiment. The experiment went through two main phases: the first using a rotating superconducting magnet and the second using two rotating permanent magnets. The experiment was not able to reach the predicted value from QED. Nonetheless the experiment set the current best limits on vacuum magnetic birefringence and dichroism for a field of $B_{\rm ext} = 2.5$ T, namely, $Δn^{\rm (PVLAS)} = (12\pm17)\times10^{-23}$ and $|Δκ|^{\rm (PVLAS)} = (10\pm28)\times10^{-23}$. The uncertainty on…
Several groups are carrying out experiments to observe and measure vacuum magnetic birefringence, predicted by Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). We have started running the new PVLAS apparatus installed in Ferrara, Italy, and have measured a noise floor value for the unitary field magnetic birefringence of vacuum $Δn_u^{\rm (vac)}= (4\pm 20) \times 10^{-23}$ T$^{-2}$ (the error represents a 1$σ$ deviation). This measurement is compatible with zero and hence represents a new limit on vacuum magnetic birefringence deriving from non linear electrodynamics. This result reduces to a factor 50 the gap …
Nonlinear effects in vacuum have been predicted but never observed yet directly. The PVLAS collaboration has long been working on an apparatus aimed at detecting such effects by measuring vacuum magnetic birefringence. Unfortunately the sensitivity has been affected by unaccounted noise and systematics since the beginning. A new small prototype ellipsometer has been designed and characterized at the Department of Physics of the University of Ferrara, Italy entirely mounted on a single seismically isolated optical bench. With a finesse F = 414000 and a cavity length L = 0.5 m we have reached th…
The internal birefringence of an optical medium develops the dynamical phase through natural rotation of incident polarized light. The uniform twist of the medium induces an external birefringence in the system. This can be visualized through the geometric phase by the solid angle in association with the angular twist per unit thickness of the medium $k$.An equivalent physical analysis in the $l=1$ orbital angular momentum sphere also has been pointed out.
We report on a simple method of locking a laser to a birefringent cavity using polarization spectroscopy. The birefringence of the resonator permits the simple extraction of an error signal by using one polarization state as a phase reference for another state. No modulation of the light or the resonator is required, reducing the complexity of the laser locking setup. This method of producing an error signal can be used on most birefringent optical resonators, even if the details of birefringence and eigenpolarizations are not known. This technique is particularly well suited for fiber ring re…
We propose an birefringence route to perfect electromagnetic (EM) wave tunneling through a metallic film which relies on homogeneous birefringent coatings with moderate and positive parameters only. EM transparency is achieved in such an birefringent-metal-birefringent (BMB) structure for both polarizations and over nearly all incident angles. The stringent restrictions in conventional dielectric-metal-dielectric media, i.e., dielectrics with extremely negative permittivity, high magnetic field and polarization dependence (only for TE waves), are not required in our method. The criterion for p…
Stimulated by the discovery of the giant birefringence (GBF) in LaOBiS2 (H. Wang, arxiv: 1304.5032), we check SrFBiS2 and find a superior birefringence up to 1.28. Naturally, AF layer (i.e., SrF) is considered to be of important and is demonstrated by the further study on AFBiS2 (A=Mg, Ca, Ba). Interestingly, MgFBiS2 shows the largest birefringence of 1.65. Furthermore, the origin of GBF is discussed in detail.
We propose a mechanical-hydrodynamical experimental setup in which the microfluidic motion manipulates the optical birefringence of levitated graphene oxide liquid crystal. The birefringence of the sample is changed by flowing graphene oxide liquid crystal in the micro-channel. By measuring the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices at five flow rates, one can determine the value of the birefringence of the samples, precisely. Our results demonstrate that, by adjusting the concentration and flow rate of dispersion of the graphene oxide nano flakes, the induced birefringence can be contr…
The effect of vacuum birefringence in a magnetic field generated by a laser-driven capacitor-coil generator as well as in field of an electromagnetic wave in a radioguide has been theoretically considered. The resulting ellipticity of a linearly polarized laser beam propagating in the considered field configuration is calculated. The obtained results are compared to the parameters of the PVLAS experiment which aims to observe the effect of magnetic vacuum birefringence experimentally.
The property of linear and circular birefringence at each point of the optical medium has been evaluated here from differential matrix $N$ using the Jones calculus. This matrix lies on the OAM sphere for $l=1$ orbital angular momentum. The geometric phase is developed by twisting the medium uniformly about the direction of propagation of the light ray. The circular birefringence of the medium,is visualized through the solid angle and the angular twist per unit thickness of the medium, $k$,that is equivalent to the topological charge of the optical element.
Previous studies of the modulation instability (MI) of continuous waves (CWs) in a two-core fiber (TCF) did not consider effects caused by co-propagation of the two polarized modes in a TCF that possesses birefringence, such as cross-phase modulation (XPM), polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), and polarization-dependent coupling (PDC) between the cores. This paper reports an analysis of these effects on the MI by considering a linear-birefringence TCF and a circular-birefringence TCF, which feature different XPM coefficients. The analysis focuses on the MI of the asymmetric CW states in the TCF…
Semiconductor spin lasers are distinguished from their conventional counterparts by the presence of spin-polarized carriers. The transfer of angular momentum of the spin-polarized carriers to photons provides important opportunities for the operation of lasers. With the injection of spin-polarized carriers, which lead to the circularly polarized light, the polarization of the emitted light can be changed an order of magnitude faster than its intensity. This ultrafast operation of spin lasers relies on a large birefringence, usually viewed as detrimental in spin and conventional lasers. We intr…
Hollow-core fibers have demonstrated record performance in applications such as high-power pulse delivery, quantum computing, and sensing. However, their routine use is yet to become reality. A major obstacle is the ability to maintain the polarization state of light over a broad range of wavelengths, while also ensuring low attenuation and single-mode guidance. Here we simulated, fabricated and characterized a single-mode polarization-maintaining anti-resonant hollow-core fiber. The birefringence was achieved by introducing resonators of different thicknesses, thereby creating reduced symmetr…
We provide a vectorial model to simulate second-harmonic generation (SHG) in birefringent, transparent media with an arbitrary configuration of non-linear ($χ^{(2)}$) crystalline grains. We apply this model on disordered assemblies of LiNbO$_3$ and BaTiO$_3$ grains to identify the influence of the birefringence on the random quasi-phase-matching process. We show that in monodispersed assemblies, the birefringence relaxes the grain-size dependence of the SHG efficiency. In polydispersed assemblies with sufficiently large grains, we find that the birefringence introduces an SHG efficiency enhanc…
Optical Fabry-Perot cavities always show a non-degeneracy of two orthogonal polarisation states. This is due to the unavoidable birefringence of dielectric mirrors whose effects are extremely important in Fabry-Perot based high-accuracy polarimeters. We have developed and present here a theory of the polarisation state dynamics in a birefringent Fabry-Perot resonator, and we validate it through measurements performed with the polarimeter of the PVLAS experiment. The measurements are performed while a laser is frequency-locked to the cavity, and provide values for the finesse of the cavity and …
The effect of gravitation field of spherically symmetric mass on the birefringent properties of crystals has been analysed. It has been shown that the gravitation field with spherical symmetry can lead to a change of birefringence in anisotropic media.
We report on the experimental observation of induced solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser with birefringence cavity. Due to the cross coupling between the two orthogonal polarization components of the laser, it was found that if a soliton was formed along one cavity polarization axis, a weak soliton was also induced along the orthogonal polarization axis, and depending on the net cavity birefringence, the induced soliton could either have the same or different center wavelengths to that of the inducing soliton. Moreover, the induced soliton always had the same group velocity as…
It is well-known that the Heisenberg-Euler-Schwinger effective Lagrangian predicts that a vacuum with a strong static electromagnetic field turns birefringent. We propose a scheme that can be implemented at the planned FCC-ee, to measure the nonlinear effect of vacuum birefringence in electrodynamics arising from QED corrections. Our scheme employs a pulsed laser to create Compton backscattered photons off a high energy electron beam, with the FCC-ee as a particularly interesting example. These photons will pass through a strong static magnetic field, which changes the state of polarization of…
While the alignment and rotation of microparticles in optical traps have received increased attention recently, one of the earliest examples has been almost totally neglected the alignment of particles relative to the beam axis, as opposed to about the beam axis. However, since the alignment torques determine how particles align in a trap, they are directly relevant to practical applications. Lysozyme crystals are an ideal model system to study factors determining the orientation of nonspherical birefringent particles in a trap. Both their size and their aspect ratio can be controlled by the g…
A stochastic theory is developed for the light transmitting the optical media exhibiting linear and nonlinear birefringence. The starting point is the two--component nonlinear Schr{"o}dinger equation (NLSE). On the basis of the ansatz of "soliton" solution for the NLSE, the evolution equation for the Stokes parameters is derived, which turns out to be the Langevin equation by taking account of randomness and dissipation inherent in the birefringent media. The Langevin equation is converted to the Fokker--Planck (FP) equation for the probability distribution by employing the technique of functi…
QED vacuum can be polarized and magnetized by an external electromagnetic field, therefore acting as a birefringent medium. This effect has not yet been measured. In this paper, after having recalled the main facts concerning Vacuum Magnetic Birefringence polarimetry detection method and the related noise sources, we detail our Monte Carlo simulation of a pulsed magnetic field data run. Our Monte Carlo results are optimized to match BMV experiment 2014 data. We show that our Monte Carlo approach can reproduce experimental results giving an important insight to the systematic effects limiting e…
Although experimental efforts have been active for about 30 years now, a direct laboratory observation of vacuum magnetic birefringence, an effect due to vacuum fluctuations, still needs confirmation. Indeed, the predicted birefringence of vacuum is $Δn = 4.0\times 10^{-24}$ @ 1~T. One of the key ingredients when designing a polarimeter capable of detecting such a small birefringence is a long optical path length within the magnetic field and a time dependent effect. To lengthen the optical path within the magnetic field a Fabry-Perot optical cavity is generally used with a finesse ranging fro…
The self-organised conical needles produced by plasma etching of silicon (Si), known as black silicon (b-Si), create a form-birefringent surface texture when etching of Si orientated at angles of $θ_i < 50 - 70^\circ$ (angle between the Si surface and vertical plasma E-field). The height of the needles in the form-birefringent region following 15~min etching was $d\sim 200$ nm and had a 100 $μ$m width of the optical retardance/birefringence, characterised using polariscopy. The height of the b-Si needles corresponds closely to the skin-depth of Si $\simλ/4$ for the visible spectral range. Refl…
Birefringent crystals (BFC) have been extensively used in imaging spectrometer, laser devices, and optical components. Seeking new BFC is of important for both fundamental research and industrial application. Employed first-principles density functional theory (DFT), we found that LaOBiS2 (space group P4/nmm), the parent phase of recently discovered BiS2-superconductor, exhibits superior birefringence with a maximum value of 2.94, which is 13.4 times larger than the extensively used YVO4 (0.22). Furthermore, LaOBiS2 is an indirect semiconductor with a band-gap of 0.9 eV, which is suitable for …
Crystalline silicon has been proposed as a new test mass material in third generation gravitational wave detectors such as the Einstein Telescope (ET). Birefringence can reduce the interferometric contrast and can produce dynamical disturbances in interferometers. In this work we use the method of polarisation-dependent resonance frequency analysis of Fabry-Perot-cavities containing silicon as a birefringent medium. Our measurements show a birefringence of silicon along the (111) axis of the order of $Δ\, n \approx 10^{-7}$ at a laser wavelength of 1550nm and room temperature. A model is prese…
We present an investigation into the tilt sensitivity of the canonical, optical, weak-value amplification device (COWVAD), introduced by Duck, Stevenson, and Sudarshan in 1989, for potential application in a Coriolis vibratory gyroscope (CVG). We model the breakdown of the weak-value amplification effect in this device with respect to angle of incidence between the laser beam and the surface of the birefringent crystal. Additionally, we model the effect of beam divergence due to misalignment of the crystals optic axis. We found that the presence of beam divergence allows the architecture to be…
Motivated by recent experimental initiatives, such as at the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (HIBEF) at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL), we calculate the birefringent scattering of x-rays at the combined field of two optical (or near-optical) lasers and compare various scenarios. In order to facilitate an experimental detection of quantum vacuum diffraction and birefringence, special emphasis is placed on scenarios where the difference between the initial and final x-ray photons is maximized. Apart from their polarization, these signal and background photons m…
Experiments for vacuum birefringence and vacuum dichroism have been set up with high-finesse high magnetic experimental apparatuses, which seem to be ideal for small gaseous Cotton-Mouton effect (CME) measurements. PVLAS Collaboration has measured CMEs in krypton, xenon and neon at the wavelength of 1064 nm. In this Letter, we report on our measurement of CMEs in nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, argon, and krypton at the same wavelength in a magnetic field B = 2.3 T at pressure P = 0.5-300 Torr and temperature T = 295-298 K. Our results agree with the PVLAS results in the common cases.
We present a method to engineer the frequency splitting of polarization eigenmodes in fiber Fabry-Perot (FFP) cavities. Using specific pattern of multiple CO$_2$ laser pulses, we machine paraboloidal micromirrors with controlled elliptical shape in a large range of radius of curvature. This method is versatile and can be used to produce cavities with maximized or near-zero polarization mode splitting. In addition, we realize dual-wavelength FFP cavities with finesse exceeding $40\,000$ at 780$\,$nm and at 1559$\,$nm in the telecom range. We provide direct evidence that the birefringent frequen…
We report on the generation of multiwavelength gain-guided soliton (GGS) in an all normal dispersion birefringent fiber laser passively mode-locked with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Determined by the cavity birefringence, we observe the stable single-, dual- and triple- wavelength mode locked GGSs, which is a natural consequence of the mutual nonlinear interaction among the normal cavity dispersion, cavity fiber nonlinear Kerr effect, laser gain saturation and bandwidth limitation resulting from the intra-cavity birefringent filter.
Axion-like particles are a broad class of dark matter candidates which are expected to behave as a coherent, classical field with a weak coupling to photons. Research into the detectability of these particles with laser interferometers has recently revealed a number of promising experimental designs. Inspired by these ideas, we propose the Axion Detection with Birefringent Cavities (ADBC) experiment, a new axion interferometry concept using a cavity that exhibits birefringence between its two, linearly polarized laser eigenmodes. This experimental concept overcomes several limitations of the d…
In this work we present data characterizing the sensitivity of the Biréfringence Magnetique du Vide (BMV) instrument. BMV is an experiment attempting to measure vacuum magnetic birefringence (VMB) via the measurement of an ellipticity induced in a linearly polarized laser field propagating through a birefringent region of vacuum in the presence of an external magnetic field. Correlated measurements of laser noise alongside the measurement in the main detection channel allow us to separate measured sensing noise from the inherent birefringence noise of the apparatus. To this end we model differ…
A scanning white light interferometer is developed to measure the distributed polarization coupling (DPC) in high birefringence polarization maintaining fibers (PMFs). Traditionally, this technique requests only one polarization mode to be excited or both polarization modes to be excited with equal intensity in the PMF. Thus, an accurate alignment of the polarization direction with the principal axis in PMF is strictly required, which is not facilely realized in practical measurement. This paper develops a method to measure the spatial distribution of polarization mode coupling with random mod…
Optical pump-probe setups are commonly used for excitation and investigation of the spin dynamics in various types of magnetic materials. However, usually the spatially homogeneous excitation is considered. In the present study we describe an approach for optical excitation of the nonuniform THz spin dynamics and for probing its spatial distribution inside a magnetic crystal. We propose to illuminate a crystal with laser pulses of properly adjusted polarization to benefit from a strong optical birefringence inherent to the crystal. It results in an unusual behavior of the effective magnetic fi…
Optical anisotropy is usually treated as an unfavorable condition for the magneto-optical measurements since it is known to diminish the Faraday rotation concerning the case of the isotropic medium. Here we show that the situation could be quite opposite: a phenomenon of birefringence mediated enhancement of the magneto-optical activity appears if the incident light polarization and angle of incidence are set properly. The present study relies on the experimental, analytical, and numerical studies of iron borate $\mathrm{FeBO_3}$ crystals. We demonstrate a significant increase of the magneto-o…
Common transparent polymer films such as cellophane and household tape are frequently used as examples of birefringent materials in textbooks and classroom demonstrations. Qualitatively, birefringence is often demonstrated by layering such films between crossed-polarizers. In this work, we describe an inexpensive experimental setup for the quantitative measurement of birefringence in common household films, suitable for senior high school or undergraduate labs. Whereas traditional approaches for polarization-based classroom experiments typically use monochromatic laser light, we encourage the …
Crystalline etalons present several advantages with respect to other types of filtergraphs when employed in magnetographs. Specially that they can be tuned by only applying electric fields. However, anisotropic crystalline etalons can also introduce undesired birefringent effects that corrupt the polarization of the incoming light. In particular, uniaxial Fabry-Pérots, such as LiNbO3 etalons, are birefringent when illuminated with an oblique beam. The farther the incidence from the normal, the larger the induced retardance between the two orthogonal polarization states. The application of high…
High-brilliance synchrotron radiation sources have opened new avenues for X-ray polarization analysis that go far beyond conventional polarimetry in the optical domain. With linear X-ray polarizers in a crossed setting polarization extinction ratios down to 10$^{-10}$ can be achieved. This renders the method sensitive to probe tiniest optical anisotropies that would occur, for example, in strong-field QED due to vacuum birefringence and dichroism. Here we show that high-purity polarimetry can be employed to reveal electronic anisotropies in condensed matter systems with utmost sensitivity and …
Vector and vortex laser beams are desired in many applications and are usually created by manipulating the laser output or by inserting optical components in the laser cavity. Distinctly, inserting liquid crystals into the laser cavity allows for extensive control over the emitted light due to their high susceptibility to external fields and birefringent nature. In this work we demonstrate diverse optical modes for lasing as enabled and stablised by topological birefringent soft matter structures using numerical modelling. We show diverse structuring of light -- with different 3D intensity and…
