Pioneering study of Gamow-Teller (GT) and Fermi matrix elements (MEs) using no-core-configuration-interaction formalism rooted in multi-reference density functional theory is presented. After successful test performed for 6He -> 6Li beta-decay, the model is applied to compute MEs in the sd- and pf-shell T=1/2 mirror nuclei. The calculated GT MEs and the isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to the Fermi branch are found to be in a very good agreement with shell-model predictions in spite of fundamental differences between these models concerning model space, treatment of correlations or inclusion of a core. This result indirectly supports the two-body current based scenarios behind the quenching of axial-vector coupling constant.
Nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for two-neutrino double-beta decay ($2νββ$) are studied in the framework of relativistic nuclear energy density functional (REDF). The properties of nuclei involved in the decay are obtained using the relativistic Hartree-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory and relevant nuclear transitions are described using the relativistic proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation based on relativistic energy density functional (REDF-QRPA). Three effective interactions have been employed, including density-dependent meson-exchange (DD-ME2) and point coupling interac…
Background: The superallowed beta-decay rates provide stringent constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. To extract crucial information about the electroweak force, small isospin-breaking corrections to the Fermi matrix element of superallowed transitions must be applied. Purpose: We perform systematic calculations of isospin-breaking corrections to superallowed beta-decays and estimate theoretical uncertainties related to the basis truncation, time-odd polarization effects related to the intrinsic symmetry of the underlying Slater determinants, and to the function…
This paper overviews various phenomena related to the concept of isospin symmetry. The focus is on N~Z nuclei, which are excellent laboratories of isospin physics. The theoretical framework applied is nuclear Density Functional Theory and its isospin- and angular-momentum projected extensions, as well as symmetry-projected multi-reference models. The topics covered include: isospin impurities, superallowed beta decays, beta-transitions in mirror nuclei, isospin breaking hadronic interactions, mirror and triplet binding energy differences, and isoscalar pairing.
We report a systematic study of nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) in neutrinoless double-beta decays with a state-of-the-art beyond mean-field covariant density functional theory. The dynamic effects of particle-number and angular-momentum conservations as well as quadrupole shape fluctuations are taken into account with projections and generator coordinate method for both initial and final nuclei. The full relativistic transition operator is adopted to calculate the NMEs. The present systematic studies show that in most of the cases there is a much better agreement with the previous non-relativi…
We use the finite amplitude method for computing charge-changing Skyrme-QRPA transition strengths in axially-deformed nuclei together with a modern Skyrme energy-density functional to fit several previously unconstrained parameters in the charge-changing time-odd part of the functional. With the modified functional we then calculate rates of beta-minus decay for all medium-mass and heavy even-even nuclei between the valley of stability and the neutron drip line. We fit the Skyrme parameters to a limited set of beta-decay rates, a set of Gamow-Teller resonance energies, and a set of spin-dipole…
We present a generator-coordinate calculation, based on a relativistic energy-density functional, of the low-lying spectra in the isotopes $^{150}$Nd and $^{150}$Sm and of the nuclear matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double-beta decay of the first isotope to the second. We carefully examine the impact of octupole correlations on both nuclear structure and the double-beta decay matrix element. Octupole correlations turn out to reduce quadrupole collectivity in both nuclei. Shape fluctuations, however, dilute the effects of octupole deformation on the double-beta decay matrix element…
Reflection asymmetric covariant density functional theory(CDFT) based on the point-coupling interaction is established on a two-center harmonic-oscillator basis and applied to investigate the Ra puzzle, i.e., the anomalous enhancement of the residual proton-neutron interactions for Ra isotopes around N=135. The octupole deformation and shape evolution in the Ra and Rn isotopes are examined in the potential energy surfaces in(beta2, beta3) plane by the constrained reflection asymmetric calculations. The residual proton-neutron interactions extracted from the double difference of the binding ene…
The no-core configuration-interaction model based on the isospin- and angular-momentum projected density functional formalism is introduced. Two applications of the model are presented: (i) determination of spectra of 0+ states in 62Zn and (ii) determination of isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to superallowed beta-decay between isobaric-analogue 0+ states in 38Ca and 38K. It is shown that, without readjusting a single parameter of the underlying Skyrme interaction, in all three nuclei, the model reproduces the 0+ spectra surprisingly well.
We describe low-lying collective excitations of atomic nuclei with the multi-reference covariant density functional theory, and combine them with coupled-channels calculations for heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. To this end, we use the calculated transition strengths among several collective states as inputs to the coupled-channels calculations. This approach provides a natural way to describe anharmonic multi-phonon excitations as well as a deviation of rotational excitations from a simple rigid rotor. We apply this method to subbarrier fusion reactions of $…
We review the particle physics aspects of neutrino-less double beta decay. This process can be mediated by light massive Majorana neutrinos (standard interpretation) or by something else (non-standard interpretations). The physics potential of both interpretations is summarized and the consequences of future measurements or improved limits on the half-life of neutrino-less double beta decay are discussed. We try to cover all proposed alternative realizations of the decay, including light sterile neutrinos, supersymmetric or left-right symmetric theories, Majorons, and other exotic possibilitie…
Two-neutrino double-beta ($2νββ$) decay has been used to constrain the neutron-proton part of effective interactions, which in turn is used to compute the nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta decay, the observation of which would have important consequences for fundamental physics. We carefully examine $2νββ$ matrix elements within the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation with nuclear energy density functionals. We work with functionals that are fit globally to single-beta-decay half-lives and charge-exchange giant-resonance energies, but not to $2νββ$ half-l…
We study neutrinoless double-beta decay in an effective field theory (EFT) for heavy nuclei, which are treated as a spherical core coupled to additional neutrons and/or protons. Since the low-energy constants of the EFT cannot be fitted to data for this unobserved decay, we follow an alternative strategy to constrain these through a correlation with double Gamow-Teller transitions. This correlation was recently found to hold for shell-model calculations, energy-density functionals, and other nuclear structure models. We therefore first calculate the nuclear matrix elements for double Gamow-Tel…
We compute nuclear matrix elements of neutrinoless double-beta decay mediated by light Majorana-neutrino exchange in the A = 6 system. The goal is to benchmark two many-body approaches, the No-Core Shell Model and the Multi-Reference In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group. We use the SRG-evolved chiral N3LO-EM500 potential for the nuclear interaction, and make the approximation that isospin is conserved. We compare the results of the two approaches as a function of the cutoff on the many-body basis space. Although differences are seen in the predicted nuclear radii, the ground-state energi…
We discuss anharmonicity of the multi-octupole-phonon states in $^{208}$Pb based on a covariant density functional theory, by fully taking into account the interplay between the quadrupole and the octupole degrees of freedom. Our results indicate the existence of a large anharmonicity in the transition strengths, even though the excitation energies are similar to those in the harmonic limit. We also show that the quadrupole-shape fluctuation significantly enhances the fragmentation of the two-octupole-phonon states in $^{208}$Pb. Using those transition strengths as inputs to coupled channels c…
Nuclear matrix elements (NME) for the most promising candidates to detect neutrinoless double beta decay have been computed with energy density functional methods including deformation and pairing fluctuations explicitly on the same footing. The method preserves particle number and angular momentum symmetries and can be applied to any decay without additional fine tunings. The finite range density dependent Gogny force is used in the calculations. An increase of $10\%-40\%$ in the NME with respect to the ones found without the inclusion of pairing fluctuations is obtained, reducing the predict…
We report the first application of a recently proposed regularization procedure for multi-reference energy density functionals, which removes spurious divergent or non-continuous contributions to the binding energy, to a general configuration mixing. As an example, we present a calculation that corresponds to the particle-number and angular momentum projection of axially symmetric time-reversal invariant quasiparticle vacua of different quadrupole deformation for the nucleus O18. The SIII parameterization of the Skyrme energy functional is used.
The results of systematic calculations of isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to superallowed beta-decays based on the self-consistent isospin- and angular-momentum-projected nuclear density functional theory (DFT) are reviewed with an emphasis on theoretical uncertainties of the model. Extensions of the formalism towards no core shell model approach with basis cutoff scheme dictated by the self-consistent particle-hole DFT solutions will be also discussed.
We use the finite amplitude method (FAM), an efficient implementation of the quasiparticle random phase approximation, to compute beta-decay rates with Skyrme energy-density functionals for 3983 nuclei, essentially all the medium-mass and heavy isotopes on the neutron rich side of stability. We employ an extension of the FAM that treats odd-mass and odd-odd nuclear ground states in the equal filling approximation. Our rates are in reasonable agreement both with experimental data where available and with rates from other global calculations.
The superallowed beta-decay rates that provide stringent constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics are affected by nuclear structure effects through isospin-breaking corrections. The self-consistent isospin- and angular-momentum-projected nuclear density functional theory is used for the first time to compute those corrections for a number of Fermi transitions in nuclei from A=10 to A=74. The resulting leading element of the CKM matrix, |V_{ud}|= 0.97447(23), agrees well with the recent result by Towner and Hardy [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 77}, 025501 (2008)].
We describe and apply a version of the finite amplitude method for obtaining the charge-changing nuclear response in the quasiparticle random phase approximation. The method is suitable for calculating strength functions and beta-decay rates, both allowed and forbidden, in axially-deformed open-shell nuclei. We demonstrate the speed and versatility of the code through a preliminary examination of the effects of tensor terms in Skyrme functionals on beta decay in a set of spherical and deformed open-shell nuclei. Like the isoscalar pairing interaction, the tensor terms systematically increase a…
Relativistic energy density functionals have become a standard framework for nuclear structure studies of ground-state properties and collective excitations over the entire nuclide chart. We review recent developments in modeling nuclear weak-interaction processes: charge-exchange excitations and the role of isoscalar proton-neutron pairing, charged-current neutrino-nucleus reactions relevant for supernova evolution and neutrino detectors, and calculation of beta-decay rates for r-process nucleosynthesis.
A new critical survey is presented of all half-life, decay-energy and branching-ratio measurements related to 20 superallowed 0+ --> 0+ beta decays. Included are 222 individual measurements of comparable precision obtained from 177 published references. Compared with our last review in 2008, we have added results from 24 new publications and eliminated 9 references, the results from which having been superseded by much more precise modern data. We obtain world-average ft-values for each of the eighteen transitions that have a complete set of data, then apply radiative and isospin-symmetry-brea…
We treat proton-neutron pairing amplitudes, in addition to the nuclear deformation, as generator coordinates in a calculation of the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge. We work in two oscillator shells, with a Hamiltonian that includes separable terms in the quadrupole, spin-isospin, and pairing (isovector and isoscalar) channels. Our approach allows larger single-particle spaces than the shell model and includes the important physics of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) without instabilities near phase transitions. After comparing the results of a simplifi…
[Background] Symmetry restoration and configuration mixing in the spirit of the generator coordinate method based on energy density functionals have become widely used techniques in low-energy nuclear structure physics. Recently, it has been pointed out that these techniques are ill-defined for standard Skyrme functionals, and a regularization procedure has been proposed to remove the resulting spuriosities from such calculations. This procedure imposes an integer power of the density for the density dependent terms of the functional. At present, only dated parameterizations of the Skyrme inte…
After identifying the nuclei in the regions near A =80 and A = 160 for which beta-decay rates have the greatest effect on weak and main r-process abundance patterns, we apply the finite-amplitude method (FAM) with Skyrme energy-density functionals (EDFs) to calculate beta-decay half-lives of those nuclei in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). We use the equal filling approximation to extend our implementation of the charge-changing FAM, which incorporates pairing correlations and allows axially symmetric deformation, to odd-A and odd-odd nuclei. Within this framework we find d…
We give a detailed analysis of the origin of spurious divergences and finite steps that have been recently identified in particle-number restoration calculations within the nuclear energy density functional framework. We isolate two distinct levels of spurious contributions to the energy. The first one is encoded in the definition of the basic energy density functional itself whereas the second one relates to the canonical procedure followed to extend the use of the energy density functional to multi-reference calculations. The first level of spuriosity relates to the long-known self-interacti…
Theoretical approaches that use one-body densities as dynamical variables, such as Hartree-Fock or the density functional theory (DFT), break isospin symmetry both explicitly, by virtue of charge-dependent interactions, and spontaneously. To restore the spontaneously broken isospin symmetry, we implemented the isospin-projection scheme on top of the Skyrme-DFT approach. This development allows for consistent treatment of isospin mixing in both ground and exited nuclear states. In this study, we apply this method to evaluate the isospin impurities in ground states of even-even and odd-odd N~Z n…
We use the axially-deformed Skyrme Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA) together with the SkM* energy-density functional, both as originally presented and with the time-odd part adjusted to reproduce the Gamow-Teller resonance energy in 208Pb, to calculate the matrix elements governing the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge, 130Te, 136Xe, and 150Nd. Our matrix elements in 130Te and 136Xe are significantly smaller than those of previous QRPA calculations, primarily because of the difference in pairing or deformation between the initial and final nuclei. In 76Ge and 150Nd our resu…
Recently, values for the Kumar quadrupole deformation parameters of the nucleus $^{130}$Xe have been computed from the results of a Coulomb excitation experiment, indicating that this xenon isotope has a prominent triaxial ground state. Within a different context, it was recently argued that the analysis of particle correlations in the final states of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions performed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) points to a similar structure for the adjacent isotope, $^{129}$Xe. In the present work, we report on state-of-the-art multi-reference energy density functional …
Background: Extensions of single-reference (SR) energy-density-functionals (EDFs) to multi-reference (MR) applications involve using the generalized Wick theorem (GWT), which leads to singular energy kernels that cannot be properly integrated to restore symmetries, unless the EDFs are generated by true interactions. Purpose: We propose a new method to regularize the MR EDFs, which is based on using auxiliary quantities obtained by multiplying the kernels with appropriate powers of overlaps. Methods: Regularized matrix elements of two-body interactions are obtained by integrating the auxiliary …
The finite-size correction to $β$-decay plays an important role in determining the expected antineutrino spectra from reactors at a level that is important for the reactor-neutrino anomaly. Here we express the leading-order finite-size correction to allowed $β$-decay in terms of Zemach moments. We calculate the Zemach moments within a Hartree-Fock model using a Skyrme-like energy density functional. We find that the Zemach moments are increased relative to predictions based on the simple assumption of identical uniform nuclear-charge and weak-transition densities. However, for allowed ground-s…
The renormalization-group approaches for classical liquids in previous works require a repulsive reference such as a hard-core one when applied to systems with short-range repulsion. The need for the reference is circumvented here by using a functional renormalization group approach for integrating the hierarchical flow of correlation functions along a path of variable interatomic coupling. We introduce the cavity distribution functions to avoid the appearance of divergent terms and choose a path to reduce the error caused by the decomposition of higher order correlation functions. We demonstr…
