This paper shows that, a quasi-localization of wavefunctions in toroidal compactifications with magnetic fluxes can lead to a strong suppression for relevant Yukawa couplings, and it is applicable to obtain tiny neutrino masses. Although it is known that magnetic fluxes lead to a Gaussian profile of zero-modes on a torus and that can yield a suppressed coupling in higher-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories, the largest (diagonal) entry of Yukawa matrices is always of $\mathcal O(1)$. In this paper, we propose a way to induce an absolutely tiny global factor of Yukawa matrices. In two SYM theories defined in different dimensional spacetime, their bifundamental representations must be localized as a point in some directions. Overlaps of such point-like localized wavefunctions and Gaussian zero-modes give a global factor of Yukawa matrices, and it can be a strong suppression factor or a usual $\mathcal O(1)$ factor, corresponding to their distance. Our numerical analysis shows that it is possible to obtain a suppression strong enough to realize the tiny neutrino masses without a hard fine-tuning. Furthermore, we propose a concrete model of the tiny neutrino Yukawa couplings in a magnetized SYM system.
We compute Yukawa couplings in type IIa string theory compactified on a six-torus in the presence of intersecting D6-branes. The six-torus is generated by an SO(12) root lattice. Yukawa couplings are expressed as sums over worldsheet instantons. Our result extends known expressions to a non-factorisable torus. As an aside we also fill in some details for the factorisable torus and non-coprime intersection numbers.
We classify compactification lattices for supersymmetric Z2 times Z2 orbifolds. These lattices include factorisable as well as non-factorisable six-tori. Different models lead to different numbers of fixed points/tori. A lower bound on the number of fixed tori per twisted sector is given by four, whereas an upper bound consists of 16 fixed tori per twisted sector. Thus, these models have a variety of generation numbers. For example, in the standard embedding, the smallest number of net generations among these classes of models is equal to six, while the largest number is 48. Conditions for all…
We suggest new simple model of generating tiny neutrino masses through a TeV-scale seesaw mechanism without requiring tiny Yukawa couplings. This model is a simple extension of the standard model by introducing extra one Higgs singlet, and one Higgs doublet with a tiny vacuum expectation value. Experimental constraints, electroweak precision data and no large flavor changing neutral currents, are satisfied since the extra doublet only has a Yukawa interaction with lepton doublets and right-handed neutrinos, and their masses are heavy of order a TeV-scale. Since active light neutrinos are Major…
We revisit the flavor symmetries arising from compactifications on tori with magnetic background fluxes. Using Euler's Theorem, we derive closed form analytic expressions for the Yukawa couplings that are valid for arbitrary flux parameters. We discuss the modular transformations for even and odd units of magnetic flux, M, and show that they give rise to finite metaplectic groups the order of which is determined by the least common multiple of the number of zero-mode flavors involved. Unlike in models in which modular flavor symmetries are postulated, in this approach they derive from an under…
We compute Yukawa couplings involving chiral matter fields in toroidal compactifications of higher dimensional super-Yang-Mills theory with magnetic fluxes. Specifically we focus on toroidal compactifications of D=10 super-Yang-Mills theory, which may be obtained as the low-energy limit of Type I, Type II or Heterotic strings. Chirality is obtained by turning on constant magnetic fluxes in each of the 2-tori. Our results are general and may as well be applied to lower D=6,8 dimensional field theories. We solve Dirac and Laplace equations to find out the explicit form of wavefunctions in extra …
We present a mechanism which drives Dirac neutrino masses to tiny values along the Renormalization Group flow, starting from an asymptotically safe ultraviolet completion of the third generation of the Standard Model including quantum gravity. At the same time, the mechanism produces a mass-splitting between the neutrino and the quark sector and also generates the mass splitting between top and bottom quark. The mechanism hinges on the hypercharges of the fermions and produces a tiny neutrino Yukawa coupling, because the right-handed neutrino is sterile and does not carry hypercharge.
We consider a possibility to naturally explain tiny neutrino masses without the lepton number violation. We study a simple model with SU(2)_L singlet charged scalars (s_1^+, s_2^+) as well as singlet right-handed neutrino (nu_R). Yukawa interactions for Dirac neutrinos, which are forbidden at the tree level by a softly-broken Z_2 symmetry, are induced at the one-loop level via the soft-breaking term in the scalar potential. Consequently neutrinos obtain small Dirac masses after the electroweak symmetry breaking. It is found that constrains from neutrino oscillation measurements and lepton flav…
We propose a minimal extension of the Standard Model in which neutrinos are Dirac particles and their tiny masses are explained without requiring tiny Yukawa couplings. A second Higgs doublet with a tiny vacuum expectation value provides neutrino masses while simultaneously improving the naturalness of the model by allowing a heavier Standard Model-like Higgs boson consistent with electroweak precision data. The model predicts a mu to e gamma rate potentially detectable in the current round of experiments, as well as distinctive signatures in the production and decay of the charged Higgs H+ of…
We consider the Horava-Witten based model with 5-branes situated near the distant orbifold plane and with vanishing instanton numbers on the physical plane. This model has a toric fibered Calabi-Yau with del Pezzo base dP_7 which allows three generations with Standard Model gauge group at the GUT scale. Previous analysis showed that the quark hierarchy at the electroweak scale could be achieved qualitatively without undue fine tuning due to the effects of the 5-branes on the Kahler potential. We extend here this analysis to include the leptons. A new mechanism is introduced to obtain neutrino …
Computation of Yukawa couplings, determining superpotentials as well as the Kähler metric, with oblique (non-commuting) fluxes in magnetized brane constructions is an interesting unresolved issue, in view of the importance of such fluxes for obtaining phenomenologically viable models. In order to perform this task, fermion (scalar) wavefunctions on toroidally compactified spaces are presented for general fluxes, parameterized by Hermitian matrices with eigenvalues of arbitrary signatures. We also give explicit mappings among fermion wavefunctions, of different internal chiralities on the tori,…
We present a new approach for generating tiny neutrino masses. The Dirac neutrino mass matrix gets contributions from two new Higgs doublets with their vevs at the electroweak (EW) scale. Neutrino masses are tiny not because of tiny Yukawa couplings, or very heavy ($\sim 10^{14}\textrm{GeV}$) right handed neutrinos. They are tiny because of a cancelation in the Dirac neutrino mass matrix (fine tuning). After fine tuning to make the Dirac neutrino mass matrix at the $10^{-4}$ GeV scale, light neutrino masses are obtained in the correct scale via the see-saw mechanism with the right handed neutr…
We study the structure of Yukawa couplings in intersecting D6-branes wrapping a factorizable 6-torus compact space T^6. Models with MSSM-like spectrum are analyzed and found to fail in predicting the quark mass spectrum because of the way in which the family structure for the left-handed, right-handed quarks and, eventually, the Higgses is `factorized' among the different tori. In order to circumvent this, we present a model with three supersymmetric Higgs doublets which satisfies the anomaly cancellation condition in a more natural way than the previous models, where quarks were not treated u…
Most of what we concern in beyond standard phenomenology are the existence of tiny numbers. The well-defined principle for protecting the tiny number to be large from quantum correction is supersymmetry. However, such a nice framework is challenged by the non-observation of superpartners at LHC. Instead, we propose a new principle to realize a natural framework to explain the smallness of feebly interaction dark matter coupling and neutrino mass. The scalar sector as well as gauge sector must be extended to include $N$ copies as a price. It is found in this paper that the yukawa coupling $y$ a…
We propose a way to generate tiny couplings of freeze-in massive particle dark matter with the Standard Model particles dynamically by considering an extension of the electroweak gauge symmetry. The dark matter is considered to be a singlet under this extended gauge symmetry which we have assumed to be the one in a very widely studied scenario called left-right symmetric model. Several heavy particles, that can be thermally inaccessible in the early Universe due to their masses being greater than the reheat temperature after inflation, can play the role of portals between dark matter and Stand…
The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of charged leptons are significantly suppressed in standard model. It has been found previously that they are even more severely suppressed in seesaw type models by powers of tiny neutrino masses as far as a leptonic CP source is concerned. We investigate whether a Majorana-type Yukawa coupling between charged leptons and a doubly charged scalar can contribute significantly to their EDMs. An observable EDM would then help unravel the Majorana nature of neutrinos by a lepton number conserving quantity. We find that the EDMs are indeed parametrically large, of …
We study a ${U(1)}_R$ symmetric extenstion of supersymmetric standard model with supersymmetry breaking in the visible as well as hidden sectors. Specifically we study ${U(1)}_R$ breaking effects parametrized by the gravitino mass. A special $R$-charge assignment of right-handed neutrinos allows us to have neutrino Yukawa couplings with the $R$-charged Higgs field, which develops a tiny vacuum expectation value after the inclusion of $U(1)_R$ symmetry breaking. Even with O(1) Yukawa couplings, a suitable size of Dirac neutrino masses can be generated if the gravitino mass is very small, $m_{3/…
We present a particle physics model based on a ten-dimensional (10D) super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory compactified on magnetized tori preserving four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. The low-energy spectrum contains the minimal supersymmetric standard model with hierarchical Yukawa couplings caused by a wavefunction localization of the chiral matter fields due to the existence of magnetic fluxes, allowing a semi-realistic pattern of the quark and the lepton masses and mixings. We show supersymmetric flavor structures at low energies induced by a moduli-mediated and an anomaly-mediated supe…
We extend some two Higgs doublet models, where the Yukawa couplings for the charged fermion mass generation only involve one Higgs doublet, by two singlet scalars respectively carrying a singly electric charge and a doubly electric charge. The doublet and singlet scalars together can mediate a two-loop diagram to generate a tiny Majorana mass matrix of the standard model neutrinos. Remarkably, the structure of the neutrino mass matrix is fully determined by the symmetric Yukawa couplings of the doubly charged scalar to the right-handed leptons. Meanwhile, a one-loop induced neutrinoless double…
We investigate whether right-handed neutrinos can play the role of the dark matter of the Universe and be generated by the freeze-out production mechanism. In the standard picture, the requirement of a long lifetime of the right-handed neutrinos implies a small neutrino Yukawa coupling. As a consequence, they never reach thermal equilibrium, thus prohibiting production by freeze-out. We note that this limitation is alleviated if the neutrino Yukawa coupling is large enough in the early Universe to thermalize the sterile neutrinos, and then becomes tiny at a certain moment, which makes them dro…
The clockwork is an extra-dimensional set-up for generating light particles with exponentially suppressed or hierarchical couplings of light particles with N massive states having comparable masses near the threshold scale of the mechanism in theories which contain no small parameters at the fundamental level. We explore the prospect of charged lepton flavour violation (cLFV) in a clockwork framework which encompasses Dirac mass terms as well as Majorana mass terms for the new clockwork fermions. We deive the masses of the non zero clockwork Majorana masses, and new particles in a clockwork fr…
We study the Higgs boson mass and the spectrum of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles in the well-motivated particle physics model derived from a ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory compactified on three factorizable tori with magnetic fluxes. This model was proposed in a previous work, where the flavor structures of the standard model including the realistic Yukawa hierarchies are obtained from non-hierarchical input parameters on the magnetized background. Assuming moduli- and anomaly-mediated contributions dominate the soft SUSY breaking terms, we study the precise SUSY spectra and…
The naturalness of electroweak scale in the models of type-I seesaw mechanism with ${\cal O}(1)$ Yukawa couplings requires TeV scale masses for the fermion singlets. In this case, the tiny neutrino masses have to arise from the cancellations within the seesaw formula which are arranged by fine-tuned correlations between the Yukawa couplings and the masses of fermion singlets. We motivate such correlations through the framework of discrete symmetries. In the case of three Majorana fermion singlets, it is shown that the exact cancellation arranged by the discrete symmetries in seesaw formula nec…
In Kaluza-Klein theories of low-scale quantum gravity, gravitons and isosinglet neutrinos may propagate in a higher-dimensional space with large compact dimensions, whereas all particles of the Standard Model are confined on a (1+3)-dimensional subspace. After compactification of the extra dimensions, the resulting Yukawa couplings of the Kaluza-Klein neutrinos to the lepton doublets become naturally very suppressed by a higher-dimensional volume factor, in agreement with phenomenological observations. We show that one-loop effects induced by Kaluza-Klein neutrinos, albeit tiny individually, a…
We consider a version of the low-scale type I seesaw mechanism for generating small neutrino masses, as an alternative to the standard seesaw scenario. It involves two right-handed (RH) neutrinos $ν_{1R}$ and $ν_{2R}$ having a Majorana mass term with mass $M$, which conserves the lepton charge $L$. The RH neutrino $ν_{2R}$ has lepton-charge conserving Yukawa couplings $g_{\ell 2}$ to the lepton and Higgs doublet fields, while small lepton-charge breaking effects are assumed to induce tiny lepton-charge violating Yukawa couplings $g_{\ell 1}$ for $ν_{1R}$, $l=e,μ,τ$. In this approach the smalln…
The predicted Standard Model (SM) electric dipole moments (EDMs) of electrons and quarks are tiny, providing an important window to observe new physics. Theories beyond the SM typically allow relatively large EDMs. The EDMs depend on the relative phases of terms in the effective Lagrangian of the extended theory, which are generally unknown. Underlying theories, such as string/M-theories compactified to four dimensions, could predict the phases and thus EDMs in the resulting supersymmetric (SUSY) theory. Earlier one of us, with collaborators, made such a prediction and found, unexpectedly, tha…
It is an experimental fact that the mass ratio for the two heavier neutrinos, h = m_3/m_2 < 6, is much smaller than the typical quark and lepton hierarchies, which are O(20-300). We have explored whether this peculiar pattern of neutrino masses can be a consequence of the peculiar way they are generated through a see-saw mechanism, determining 1) How the present experimental data restrict the structure of the high-energy seesaw parameters and 2) Which choices, among the allowed ones, produce more naturally the observed pattern of neutrino masses. We have studied in particular if starting with …
We propose a minimal extension of the standard model of particle physics to accommodate cosmic inflation, dark matter and light neutrino masses. While the inflationary phase is obtained from a modified chaotic inflation scenario, consistent with latest cosmology data, the dark matter particle is a fermion singlet which remains out of equilibrium in the early universe. The scalar field which revives the chaotic inflation scenario by suitable modification also assists in generating tiny couplings of dark matter with its mother particle, naturally realizing the non-thermal or freeze-in type dark …
The appealing feature of inverse seesaw models is that the Standard Model (SM) neutrino mass emerges from the exchange of TeV scale singlets with sizable Yukawa couplings, which can be tested at colliders. However, the tiny Majorana mass splitting between TeV singlets, introduced to accommodate small neutrino masses, is left unexplained. Moreover, we argue that these models suffer from a structural limitation that prevents a successful leptogenesis if one insists on having unsuppressed Yukawa couplings and TeV scale singlets. In this work we propose a hybrid seesaw model, where we replace the …
Several authors have pointed out that the scalar-mediated interaction of neutrinos in a neutriophilic two-Higgs-doublet model (nu2HDM) can be as strong as electromagnetic interaction [1-3]. We show that the coupling constants of neutrino-scalar interaction are actually restricted to be y_i < 1.5 x 10^{-3} by supernova neutrino observation, and further constrained to be y_i < 2.3 x 10^{-4} by precision measurements of acoustic peaks of the cosmic microwave background. Based on the energy-loss argument for supernova cores, we derive a slightly more restrictive bound y_i < 3.5 x 10^{-5}. Therefor…
The Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) offers the unique opportunity of studying the Higgs coupling to the electron, $y_e$, via resonant s-channel production, $e^+e^- \to H$, in a dedicated run at $\sqrt{s} = m_H$. The signature for direct Higgs production is a small rise in cross sections for particular final states, consistent with Higgs decays, over the expectations for their occurrence due to SM background processes involving $Z^*,γ^*$, or t-channel exchanges. Performing such a measurement is remarkably challenging for four main reasons. First, the low value of the e$^\pm$ mass leads to a t…
We consider the Standard Model with three right-handed neutrinos to generate tiny neutrino masses by the seesaw mechanism. Especially, we investigate the case when one right-handed neutrino has the suppressed Yukawa coupling constants. Such a particle has a long lifetime and can produce an additional entropy by the decay. It is then discussed the impact of the entropy production on the gravitational wave background originated in the primordial inflation. We show that the mass and the coupling constants of the long-lived right-handed neutrino can be probed by the distortion of the gravitational…
Motivated by the fact that the origin of tiny Dirac neutrino masses via the standard model Higgs field and non-thermal dark matter populating the Universe via freeze-in mechanism require tiny dimensionless couplings of similar order of magnitudes $(\sim 10^{-12})$, we propose a framework that can dynamically generate such couplings in a unified manner. Adopting a flavour symmetric approach based on $A_4$ group, we construct a model where Dirac neutrino coupling to the standard model Higgs and dark matter coupling to its mother particle occur at dimension six level involving the same flavon fie…
We study the possibility of generating tiny Dirac neutrino masses at one loop level through the \textit{scotogenic} mechanism such that one of the particles going inside the loop can be a stable cold dark matter (DM) candidate. Majorana mass terms of singlet fermions as well as tree level Dirac neutrino masses are prevented by incorporating the presence of additional discrete symmetries in a minimal fashion, which also guarantee the stability of the dark matter candidate. Due to the absence of total lepton number violation, the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe is generated through the…
The existence of tiny neutrino masses at a scale more than a million times smaller than the lightest charged fermion mass, namely the electron, and their mixings can not be explained within the framework of the exceptionally successful Standard Model. There are four ideas that has been proposed to explain the tiny neutrino masses. These include the see-saw mechanism with a right handed neutrino at the GUT scale, and this is the most elegant mechanism. The other mechanisms are radiatively generated neutrino masses, the neutrino mass arising from a 2nd Higgs doublet having a tiny VEV and couplin…
