We review recent rigorous mathematical results about the macroscopic behaviour of harmonic chains with the dynamics perturbed by a random exchange of velocities between nearest neighbor particles. The random exchange models the effects of nonlinearities of anharmonic chains and the resulting dynamics have similar macroscopic behaviour. In particular there is a superdiffusion of energy for unpinned acoustic chains. The corresponding evolution of the temperature profile is governed by a fractional heat equation. In non-acoustic chains we have normal diffusivity, even if momentum is conserved.
We consider a $d$-dimensional disordered harmonic chain (DHC) perturbed by an energy conservative noise. We obtain uniform in the volume upper and lower bounds for the thermal conductivity defined through the Green-Kubo formula. These bounds indicate a positive finite conductivity. We prove also that the infinite volume homogenized Green-Kubo formula converges.
We introduce a model whose thermal conductivity diverges in dimension 1 and 2, while it remains finite in dimension 3. We consider a system of oscillators perturbed by a stochastic dynamics conserving momentum and energy. We compute thermal conductivity via Green-Kubo formula. In the harmonic case we compute the current-current time correlation function, that decay like $t^{-d/2}$ in the unpinned case and like $t^{-d/2-1}$ if a on-site harmonic potential is present. This implies a finite conductivity in $d\ge 3$ or in pinned cases, and we compute it explicitly. For general anharmonic strictly …
Anomalous large thermal conductivity has been observed numerically and experimentally in one and two dimensional systems. All explicitly solvable microscopic models proposed to date did not explain this phenomenon and there is an open debate about the role of conservation of momentum. We introduce a model whose thermal conductivity diverges in dimension 1 and 2 if momentum is conserved, while it remains finite in dimension $d\ge 3$. We consider a system of harmonic oscillators perturbed by a non-linear stochastic dynamics conserving momentum and energy. We compute explicitly the time correlati…
In this paper, thermal transport in bond-disordered harmonic chains is revisited in detail using a nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. For strong bond disorder, thermal conductivity is independent of the system size. However, kinetic temperatures described by the local number of states coupling to external heat reservoirs are anomalous since they form a nonlinear profile in the interior of the system. Both results are accounted for in a unified manner in terms of the frequency-dependent localization length. From this argument, we derive a generic formula describing the asymptotic profil…
The harmonic Fibonacci chain, which is one of a quasiperiodic chain constructed with a recursion relation, has a singular continuous frequency-spectrum and critical eigenstates. The validity of the Fourier law is examined for the harmonic Fibonacci chain with stochastic heat baths at both ends by investigating the system size N dependence of the heat current J and the local temperature distribution. It is shown that J asymptotically behaves as (ln N)^{-1} and the local temperature strongly oscillates along the chain. These results indicate that the Fourier law does not hold on the harmonic Fib…
We study the transport properties of a large class of locally confined Hamiltonian systems, in which neighboring particles interact through hard core elastic collisions. When these collisions become rare and the systems large, we derive a Boltzmann-like equation for the evolution of the probability densities. We solve this equation in the linear regime and compute the heat conductivity from a Green-Kubo formula. The validity of our approach is demonstated by comparing our predictions to the results of numerical simulations performed on a new class of high-dimensional defocusing chaotic billiar…
We investigate the thermal conductivity of the classical Heisenberg spin chain coupled to a variety of phonon systems using a Green-Kubo approach as well as coupling to heat reservoirs. The decay of energy current correlations is power law or exponential, depending on the type of (an)harmonicity of the phonon system and the presence of a substrate. In particular, we find that coupling the spin system to displacements with an acoustic type harmonic inter-site potential leads to a diverging thermal conductivity. Adding a substrate, harmonic or periodic such as sine-Gordon, drives the system to d…
We study heat conduction in one dimensional mass disordered harmonic and anharmonic lattices. It is found that the thermal conductivity $κ$ of the disordered anharmonic lattice is finite at low temperature, whereas it diverges as $κ\sim N^{0.43}$ at high temperature. Moreover, we demonstrate that a unique nonequilibrium stationary state in the disordered harmonic lattice does not exist at all.
We study numerically the thermal conductivity coefficient $κ$ as a function of system length $L$ for several different quasi one dimensional models: classical gases of hard spheres with both longitudinal and transverse degrees of freedom. We introduce a model that is ergodic and highly chaotic but also conserves energy and momentum, and is very useful because it shows scaling even at small system sizes. We find that $κ\sim L^α$ over more than two decades, with $α$ very close to the analytical prediction of 1/3.
It is well known that the contribution of harmonic phonons to the thermal conductivity of 1D systems diverges with the harmonic chain length $L$ (explicitly, increases with $L$ as a power-law with a positive power). Furthermore, within various one-dimensional models containing disorder it was shown that this divergence persists, with the thermal conductivity scaling as $\sqrt{L}$ under certain boundary conditions, where $L$ is the length of the harmonic chain. Here we show that when the chain is weakly coupled to the heat reservoirs and there is strong disorder this scaling can be violated. We…
We derive the thermal conductivities of one-dimensional harmonic and anharmonic lattices with self-consistent heat baths (BRV lattice) from the Single-Mode Relaxation Time (SMRT) approximation. For harmonic lattice, we obtain the same result as previous works. However, our approach is heuristic and reveals phonon picture explicitly within the heat transport process. The results for harmonic and anharmonic lattices are compared with numerical calculations from Green-Kubo formula. The consistency between derivation and simulation strongly supports that effective (renormalized) phonons are energy…
We consider heat transport in one-dimensional harmonic chains with isotopic disorder, focussing our attention mainly on how disorder correlations affect heat conduction. Our approach reveals that long-range correlations can change the number of low-frequency extended states. As a result, with a proper choice of correlations one can control how the conductivity $κ$ scales with the chain length $N$. We present a detailed analysis of the role of specific long-range correlations for which a size-independent conductivity is exactly recovered in the case of fixed boundary conditions. As for free bou…
We consider a chain of coupled and strongly pinned anharmonic oscillators subject to a non-equilibrium random forcing. Assuming that the stationary state is approximately Gaussian, we first derive a stationary Boltzmann equation. By localizing the involved resonances, we next invert the linearized collision operator and compute the heat conductivity. In particular, we show that the Gaussian approximation yields a finite conductivity $κ\sim\frac{1}{λ^2T^2}$, for $λ$ the anharmonic coupling strength.
We consider heat transport in one-dimensional harmonic chains attached at its ends to Langevin heat baths. The harmonic chain has mass impurities where the separation $d$ between any two successive impurities is randomly distributed according to a power-law distribution $P(d)\sim 1/d^{α+1}$, being $α>0$. In the regime where the first moment of the distribution is well defined ($1<α<2$) the thermal conductivity $κ$ scales with the system size $N$ as $κ\sim N^{(α-3)/α}$ for fixed boundary conditions, whereas for free boundary conditions $κ\sim N^{(α-1)/α}$ if $N\gg1$. When $α=2$, the inverse loc…
We consider $d$-dimensional chains of (an)harmonic oscillators we perturb by a noise conserving energy or energy and momentum. We review the thermal conduction properties we obtained for these systems and conclude by several open questions.
We study heat conduction in a harmonic crystal whose bulk dynamics is supplemented by random reversals (flips) of the velocity of each particle at a rate $λ$. The system is maintained in a nonequilibrium stationary state(NESS) by contacts with Langevin reservoirs at different temperatures. We show that the one-body and pair correlations in this system are the same (after an appropriate mapping of parameters) as those obtained for a model with self-consistent reservoirs. This is true both for the case of equal and random(quenched) masses. While the heat conductivity in the NESS of the ordered s…
The flow of momentum and energy in a fluid is typically associated with dissipative transport coefficients: viscosity and thermal conductivity. Fluids that break certain symmetries such as mirror symmetry and time-reversal invariance can display non-dissipative transport coefficients called odd (or Hall) viscosities and thermal conductivities. The goal of this paper is to elucidate the microscopic origin of these dissipationless transport coefficients using kinetic theory. We show that odd viscosity and odd thermal conductivity arise when the linearized collision operator is not Hermitian. Thi…
We consider a chain composed of $N$ coupled harmonic oscillators in contact with heat baths at temperature $T_\ell$ and $T_r$ at sites 1 and $N$ respectively. The oscillators are also subjected to non-momentum conserving bulk stochastic noises. These make the heat conductivity satisfy Fourier's law. Here we describe some new results about the hydrodynamical equations for typical macroscopic energy and displacement profiles, as well as their fluctuations and large deviations, in two simple models of this type.
We address the general problem of heat conduction in one dimensional harmonic chain, with correlated isotopic disorder, attached at its ends to white noise or oscillator heat baths. When the low wavelength $μ$ behavior of the power spectrum $W$ (of the fluctuations of the random masses around their common mean value) scales as $W(μ)\sim μ^β$, the asymptotic thermal conductivity $κ$ scales with the system size $N$ as $κ\sim N^{(1+β)/(2+β)}$ for free boundary conditions, whereas for fixed boundary conditions $κ\sim N^{(β-1)/(2+β)}$; where $β>-1$, which is the usual power law scaling for one dime…
We study the transport of heat along a chain of particles interacting through a harmonic potential and subject to heat reservoirs at its ends. Each particle has two degrees of freedom and is subject to a stochastic noise that produces infinitesimal changes in the velocity while keeping the kinetic energy unchanged. This is modelled by means of a Langevin equation with multiplicative noise. We show that the introduction of this energy conserving stochastic noise leads to Fourier's law. By means of an approximate solution that becomes exact in the thermodynamic limit, we also show that the heat …
We show numerically that including soft-sphere type collisions in the celebrated Fermi-Pasta-Ulam ($FPU$) chain completely alters the thermal transport characteristics. The resulting $FPU^C$ chains, while being momentum preserving, satisfy the Fourier's law and do not show anomalous thermal transport behavior. Collisions play a significant role in reducing the boundary jumps typically observed in $FPU$ chains. The thermal conductivity of the $FPU^C$ chains is significantly smaller than the $FPU$ chains at low temperatures due to the fast redistribution of energy from the lowest mode of vibrati…
We study the thermal conductivity, at fixed positive temperature, of a disordered lattice of harmonic oscillators, weakly coupled to each other through anharmonic potentials. The interaction is controlled by a small parameter $ε> 0$. We rigorously show, in two slightly different setups, that the conductivity has a non-perturbative origin. This means that it decays to zero faster than any polynomial in $ε$ as $ε\rightarrow 0$. It is then argued that this result extends to a disordered chain studied by Dhar and Lebowitz, and to a classical spins chain recently investigated by Oganesyan, Pal and …
Thermal conductivity of a model glass-forming system in the liquid and glass states is studied using extensive numerical simulations. We show that near the glass transition temperture, where the structural relaxation time becomes very long, the measured thermal conductivity decreases with increasing age. Secondly the thermal conductivity of the disordered solid obtained at low temperatures depends on the cooling rate with which it was prepared, with lower cooling rates leading to lower thermal conductivity. Our analysis links this decrease of the thermal conductivity with increased exploration…
This work relaxes the assumption of point particles prevalent in the study of thermal transport characteristics in $Φ^4$ chains. The particles of the modified chain, henceforth termed as the $Φ^{4C}$ chain, can collide with each other. Collisions have been modelled by adding a short-ranged soft-sphere potential to the Hamiltonian of the $Φ^4$ chain. The inclusion of soft-sphere potential drastically alters the thermal transport characteristics while still satisfying the Fourier's law: at low temperatures, the temperature profile has negligible boundary jumps in $Φ^{4C}$ chains, thermal conduct…
We study the thermal conduction behaviors of one-dimensional lattice models with asymmetry harmonic interparticle interactions in this paper. Normal thermal conductivity independent of the system size is observed when the lattice chains are long enough. Because only the harmonic interactions are involved, the result confirms without ambiguous interpretation that the asymmetry plays key role in resulting in the normal thermal conduction in one-dimensional momentum conserving lattices. Both equilibrium and nonequilibrium simulations are performed to support the conclusion.
