We explored a method to reconstruct the distribution function of the Galactic thick disc within the action space where nearby thick-disc stars are distributed. By applying this method to 127 chemically-selected thick-disc stars in the Solar neighbourhood, we found that the vertical velocity dispersion that corresponds to the reconstructed distribution function declines approximately as $\exp (-R/R_s)$ at 4.5 kpc < R < 9.5 kpc, with $R_s$ = 8.3 $\pm$ 1.1 (rand.) $\pm$ 1.6 (sys.) kpc. Also, we found that the vertical velocity dispersion $σ_z$ of our local thick-disc stars shows only weak dependency on radial and azimuthal velocities $(v_R, v_ϕ)$. We discuss possible implications of these results on the global structure of the Milky Way thick disc.
We used the ugr magnitudes of 1,437,467 F-G type main-sequence stars with metal abundance -2<[Fe/H]<+0.2 dex and estimated radial and vertical metallicity gradients for high Galactic-latitude fields (b>50) of the Milky Way Galaxy. The radial metallicity gradient d[Fe/H]/dR=-0.042(0.011) dex/kpc estimated for the stars with 1.31<z<=1.74 kpc is attributed to the thin-disc population. While, the radial gradients evaluated for stars at higher vertical distances are close to zero indicating that the thick disc and halo have not undergone a radial collapse phase at least at high Galactic latitudes. …
The vertical structure and dynamics of stars in our local Galactic neighbourhood contains much information about the local distribution of visible and dark matter and of perturbations to the Milky Way disc. We use data on the positions and velocities of stars in the solar neighbourhood from \gaia\ DR2 and large spectroscopic surveys to investigate the vertical number counts and mean-velocity trend as a function of distance from the local Galactic mid-plane. We perform a detailed measurement of the wave-like North-South asymmetry in the vertical number counts, which reveals a number of deficits…
Based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan telescopes we present detailed elemental abundances for 20 red giant stars in the outer Galactic disk, located at Galactocentric distances between 9 and 13 kpc. The outer disk sample is complemented with samples of red giants from the inner Galactic disk and the solar neighbourhood, analysed using identical methods. For Galactocentric distances beyond 10 kpc, we only find chemical patterns associated with the local thin disk, even for stars far above the Galactic plane. Our results show that the relative densi…
It has long been known that the vertical motions of Galactic disk stars increase with stellar age, commonly interpreted as vertical heating through orbit scattering. Here we map the vertical actions of disk stars as a function of age ($τ\le$ 8 Gyrs) and across a large range of Galactocentric radii, $\overline{R}_{\rm GC}$, drawing on APOGEE and Gaia data. We fit $\widehat{J_z}(\overline{R}_{\rm GC},τ)$ as a combination of the vertical action at birth, $\widehat{J_{z,0}}$, and subsequent heating $\widehat{ΔJ_z}_{\, {\rm 1Gyr}}(\overline{R}_{\rm GC})$ that scales as $τ^{γ(\overline{R}_{\rm GC})}…
We obtain a magnitude-limited sample of Andromeda (M 31) disc PNe with chemical abundance estimated through the direct detection of the [OIII] 4363 $\mathring{\mathrm A}$ line. This leads to $205$ and $200$ PNe with oxygen and argon abundances respectively. We find that high- and low-extinction M 31 disc PNe have statistically distinct argon and oxygen abundance distributions. In the radial range $2-30$ kpc, the older low-extinction disc PNe are metal-poorer on average with a slightly positive radial oxygen abundance gradient ($0.006 \pm 0.003$ dex/kpc) and slightly negative for argon ($-0.005…
The variation of the kinematical properties of the Galactic thick disk with Galactic height Z are studied by means of 412 red giants observed in the direction of the south Galactic pole up to 4.5 kpc from the plane. We confirm the non-null mean radial motion toward the Galactic anticenter found by other authors, but we find that it changes sign at |Z|=3 kpc, and the proposed inward motion of the LSR alone cannot explain these observations. The rotational velocity decreases with |Z| by -30 km/s/kpc, but the data are better represented by a power-law with index 1.25, similar to that proposed fro…
We present evidence that isolated growing discs, subject to internal spiral perturbations, thicken due to both heating \emph{and} radial migration. We show this by demonstrating that the thickness and vertical velocity dispersions of coeval stars depend on their age as well as the change in their radii. While the disc thickens due to internal processes, we find that this induces only a minor amount of flaring. We further demonstrate the consequences of such thickening on the structural properties of stellar populations and find that they qualitatively agree with recent studies of the Milky Way…
We examine the vertical structure of Galactic disk kinematics over a Galactocentric radial distance range of $R=5-15$ $\rm{kpc}$ and up to $3$ $\rm{kpc}$ away from the Galactic plane, using the K-type giants surveyed by LAMOST. Based on robust measurements of three-dimensional velocity moments, a wobbly disk is detected in a phenomenological sense. An outflow dominates the radial motion of the inner disk, while in the outer disk there exist alternate outward and inward flows. The vertical bulk velocities is a combination of breathing and bending modes. A contraction-like breathing mode with am…
Based on published data, we have produced a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe) that is complete within 2 kpc of the Sun. We have estimated the total number of PNe in the Galaxy from this sample to be 17000+/-3000 and determined the vertical scale height of the thin disk based on an exponential density distribution to be 197+/-10 pc. The next sample includes PNe from the Stanghellini-Haywood catalog with minor additions. For this purpose, we have used about 200 PNe with Peimbert's types I, II, and III. In this case, we have obtained a considerably higher value of the vertical scale height that i…
We investigate the kinematics of red clump stars in the Solar Neighbourhood by combining data from TGAS and RAVE to constrain the local dark matter density. After calibrating the absolute magnitude of red clump stars, we characterize their velocity distribution over a radial distance range of $6$-$10$ kpc and up to $1.5$ kpc away from the Galactic plane. We then apply the axisymmetric Jeans equations on subsets representing the thin and thick disks to determine the (local) distribution of mass near the disk of our Galaxy. Our kinematic maps are well-behaved permitting a straightforward local d…
Up-to-date data on 2214 classical Cepheids have been used. The model of an exponential matter density distribution in the Galactic thin disk has been applied. New estimates of the radial disk scale length $h_R,$ the distance of the Sun from the symmetry plane $z_\odot$, and the vertical disk scale height $h_z$ have been obtained. Based on samples of 1087 Cepheids younger than 120 Myr and 1127 Cepheids older than 120 Myr, we have found $h_R=2.30\pm0.09$ kpc and $h_R=1.96\pm0.12$ kpc, respectively. It has turned out that an unambiguous estimate of $h_R$ cannot be obtained from their overall radi…
We analyze the 3D kinematics of a sample of $\sim 4400$ red clump stars ranging between 5 and 10 kpc from the Galactic center and up to 3 kpc from the Galactic plane. This sample is representative for the metal-rich ([Fe/H] = -0.6 to 0.5) thick disk. Absolute proper motions are from the fourth release of the Southern Proper Motion Program, and radial velocities from the second release of the Radial Velocity Experiment. The derived kinematical properties of the thick disk include: the rotational velocity gradient $\partial V_θ / \partial z = -25.2 \pm 2.1$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, velocity dispe…
We examine the metallicity distribution of the Galactic thick disk using F, G, and K dwarf stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Data Release 8. Using the large sample of dwarf stars with proper motions and spectroscopically determined stellar parameters, metallicity gradients in the radial direction for various heights above the Galactic plane and in the vertical direction for various radial distances from the Galaxy center have been found. In particular, we find a vertical metallicity gradient of -0.113 +/- 0.010 (-0.125 +/- 0.008) dex/kpc using an isochrone (photometric) distanc…
We present a three dimensional velocity analysis of Milky Way disk kinematics using LAMOST K giant stars and the GPS1 proper motion catalogue. We find that Galactic disk stars near the anticenter direction (in the range of Galactocentric distance between $R=8$ and $13$ kpc and vertical position between $Z=-2$ and $2$ kpc) exhibit asymmetrical motions in the Galactocentric radial, azimuthal, and vertical components. Radial motions are not zero, thus departing from circularity in the orbits; they increase outwards within $R\lesssim 12$ kpc, show some oscillation in the northern ($0 < Z < 2$ kpc)…
Intermediate- and high-velocity clouds (IVCs, HVCs) are a potential source of fuel for star formation in the Milky Way (MW), but their origins and fates depend sensitively on their distances. We search for IVC and HVC in HST high-resolution ultraviolet spectra of 55 halo stars at vertical heights $|z| \gtrsim 1$ kpc. We show that IVCs ($40 \leq |v_{\rm LSR}| <90$ km/s) have a high detection rate - the covering factor, $f_c$ - that is about constant ($f_c =0.90\pm 0.04$) from $z=1.5$ to $14$ kpc, implying IVCs are essentially confined to $|z|\lesssim 1.5$ kpc. For the HVCs ($90 \leq |v_{\rm LSR…
We present {complexity} of the Galactic outer disc {by fitting the stellar volume densities of the red giant branch stars with a two-disc component model}. {The discs are confirmed to} extend to $R\sim19$\,kpc. The radial density profile of the discs shows {two breaks at $R\sim11$ and $\sim14$\,kpc, respectively, which} separate the radial profile into three segments with different scale lengths of $2.12\pm0.26$, $1.18\pm0.08$, and $2.72$\,kpc at $R<11$, $11\leq R\leq14$, and $R>14$\,kpc, respectively. The first {break} is likely due to the sudden drop in the radial profile of the thin disc, w…
We estimated iron and metallicity gradients in the radial and vertical directions with the F and G type dwarfs taken from the RAVE DR4 database. The sample defined by the constraints Zmax<=825 pc and ep<=0.10 consists of stars with metal abundances and space velocity components agreeable with the thin-disc stars. The radial iron and metallicity gradients estimated for the vertical distance intervals 0<Zmax<=500 and 500<Zmax<=800 pc are d[Fe/H]/dRm=-0.083(0.030) and d[Fe/H]/dRm=-0.048(0.037 )dex/kpc; and d[M/H]/dRm=-0.063(0.011) and d[M/H]/dRm=-0.028(0.057) dex/kpc, respectively, where Rm is th…
We present a study of the extent to which the Sellwood & Binney radial migration of stars is affected by their vertical motion about the midplane. We use both controlled simulations in which only a single spiral mode is excited, as well as slightly more realistic cases with multiple spiral patterns and a bar. We find that rms angular momentum changes are reduced by vertical motion, but rather gradually, and the maximum changes are almost as large for thick disc stars as for those in a thin disc. We find that particles in simulations in which a bar forms suffer slightly larger angular momentum …
The secular thickening of a self-gravitating stellar galactic disc is investigated using the dressed collisionless Fokker-Planck equation and the inhomogeneous multicomponent Balescu-Lenard equation. The thick WKB limits for the diffusion fluxes are found using the epicyclic approximation, while assuming that only radially tightly wound transient spirals are sustained by the disc. This yields simple quadratures for the drift and diffusion coefficients, providing a clear understanding of the positions of maximum vertical orbital diffusion within the disc, induced by fluctuations either external…
Using a sample of over 70, 000 red clump (RC) stars with $5$-$10$% distance accuracy selected from the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-center (LSS-GAC), we study the radial and vertical gradients of the Galactic disk(s) mainly in the anti-center direction, covering a significant disk volume of projected Galactocentric radius $7 \leq R_{\rm GC} \leq 14$ kpc and height from the Galactic midplane $0 \leq |Z| \leq 3$ kpc. Our analysis shows that both the radial and vertical metallicity gradients are negative across much of the disk volume probed, and exhibit significant spatial va…
We have undertaken the study of the elemental abundances and kinematic properties of a metal-poor sample of candidate thick-disk stars selected from the RAVE spectroscopic survey of bright stars to differentiate among the present scenarios of the formation of the thick disk. In this paper, we report on a sample of 214 red giant branch, 31 red clump/horizontal branch, and 74 main-sequence/sub-giant branch metal-poor stars, which serves to augment our previous sample of only giant stars. We find that the thick disk [alpha/Fe] ratios are enhanced, and have little variation (<0.1 dex), in agreemen…
This study is based on high quality astrometric and spectroscopic data from the most recent releases by Gaia and APOGEE. We select $58\,882$ thin and thick disk red giants, in the Galactocentric (cylindrical) distance range $5 < R < 13$~kpc and within $|z| < 3$~kpc, for which full chemo-kinematical information is available. Radial chemical gradients, $\partial \rm{[M/H]} / \partial \rm{R}$, and rotational velocity-metallicity correlations, $\partial V_ϕ/ \partial \rm{[M/H]}$, are re-derived firmly uncovering that the thick disk velocity-metallicity correlation maintains its positiveness over t…
We analyse a 10,000 star spectroscopic survey, focused on Galactic thick disk stars typically 2-5 kpc from the Sun, carried out using the AAOmega Spectrograph on the AAT. We develop methods for completeness-correction of the survey based on SDSS photometry, and we derive star distances using an improved isochrone-fitting method with accuracies better than 10%. We determine the large-scale kinematic (Vphi=172 km/s and sigma(phi,r,z) = (49,51,40) km/s), and abundance properties of the thick disk, showing these representative values are a fair description within about 3 kpc of the sun, and in the…
We investigate the three-dimensional asymmetrical kinematics and present time stamps of the Milky Way disk between Galactocentric distances of $R=12$ and 15 \,kpc, using red clump stars selected from the LAMOST Galactic survey, also with proper motion measurements provided by the Gaia DR2. We discover velocity substructure above the Galactic plane corresponding to a density dip found recently ("south-middle opposite" density structure[R $\sim$ 12-15 \,kpc, Z $\sim$ 1.5 \,kpc] discovered in \citet{Wang2018b, Wang2018c}) in the radial and azimuthal velocity. For the vertical velocity, we detect …
We used a combination of public RR Lyrae star catalogs and a Bayesian methodology to derive robust structural parameters of the inner Halo (<25 kpc) and Thick Disc of the Milky Way. RR Lyrae stars are an unequivocal tracer of old metal-poor populations, for which accurate distances and extinctions can be individually estimated and so, are a reliable independent means of tracing the population of the old high-[α/Fe] disc usually associated to the Thick Disc. In particular, the chosen RR Lyrae sample spans regions at low galactic latitude toward the anti-center direction, allowing to probe the o…
We map the stellar structure of the Galactic thick disk and halo by applying color-magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting to photometric data from the SEGUE survey, allowing, for the first time, a comprehensive analysis of their structure at both high and low latitudes using uniform SDSS photometry. Incorporating photometry of all relevant stars simultaneously, CMD fitting bypasses the need to choose single tracer populations. Using old stellar populations of differing metallicities as templates we obtain a sparse 3D map of the stellar mass distribution at |Z|>1 kpc. Fitting a smooth Milky Way model …
Based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan telescopes we present detailed elemental abundances for 64 red giant stars in the inner and outer Galactic disk. For the inner disk sample (4-7 kpc from the Galactic centre) we find that stars with both thin and thick disk abundance patterns are present while for Galactocentric distances beyond 10 kpc, we only find chemical patterns associated with the local thin disk, even for stars far above the Galactic plane. Our results show that the relative densities of the thick and thin disks are dramatically differen…
We examine the α-element abundance ratio, [α/Fe], of 5620 stars, observed by the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration survey in the region 6 kpc < R < 16 kpc, 0.15 kpc < |Z| < 1.5 kpc, as a function of Galactocentric radius R and distance from the Galactic plane |Z|. Our results show that the high-α thick disk population has a short scale length (L_thick ~ 1.8 kpc) compared to the low-αpopulation, which is typically associated with the thin disk. We find that the fraction of high-α stars in the inner disk increases at large |Z|, and that high-α stars lag in rotation compa…
We analyze a new kinematic survey that includes accurate proper motions derived from SDSS DR7 positions, combined with multi-epoch measurements from the GSC-II database. By means of the SDSS spectro-photometric data (effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and radial velocities), we estimate photometric parallaxes for a sample of 27,000 FGK (sub)dwarfs with [Fe/H]<-0.5, which we adopted as tracers of the seven-dimensional space distribution (kinematic phase distribution plus chemical abundance) of the thick disk and inner halo within a few kiloparsecs of the Sun. We find evidence …
Using data from the GALAH pilot survey, we determine properties of the Galactic thin and thick disks near the solar neighbourhood. The data cover a small range of Galactocentric radius ($7.9 \leq R_\mathrm{GC} \leq 9.5$ kpc), but extend up to 4 kpc in height from the Galactic plane, and several kpc in the direction of Galactic anti-rotation (at longitude $260 ^\circ \leq \ell \leq 280^\circ$). This allows us to reliably measure the vertical density and abundance profiles of the chemically and kinematically defined `thick' and `thin' disks of the Galaxy. The thin disk (low-$α$ population) exhib…
Warps are observed in a large fraction of disc galaxies, and can be due to a large number of different processes. Some of these processes might also cause vertical heating and flaring. Using a sample of galaxies simulated in their cosmological context, we study the connection between warping and disc heating. We analyse the vertical stellar density structure within warped stellar discs, and monitor the evolution of the scale-heights of the mono-age populations and the geometrical thin and thick disc during the warp's lifetime. We also compare the overall thickness and the vertical velocity dis…
We examine a possible formation scenario of galactic thick discs with numerical simulations. Thick discs have previously been argued to form in clumpy disc phase in the high-redshift Universe, which host giant clumps of <10^9 M_sun in their highly gas-rich discs. We performed SPH simulations using isolated galaxy models for the purpose of verifying whether dynamical and chemical properties of the thick discs formed in such clumpy galaxies are compatible with observations. The results of our simulations seem nearly consistent with observations in dynamical properties such as radial and vertical…
We investigate the Milky Way Galaxy's radial and vertical metallicity gradients using a sample of 47,406 red clump stars from the RAVE DR4. This sample is more than twice the size of the largest sample in the literature investigating radial and vertical metallicity gradients. The absolute magnitude of Groenewegen (2008) is used to determine distances to our sample stars. The resulting distances agree with the RAVE DR4 distances Binney et al. (2014) of the same stars. Our photometric method also provides distances to 6185 stars that are not assigned a distance in RAVE DR4. The metallicity gradi…
We analyse disc heating and radial migration in N-body models of growing disc galaxies with thick and thin discs. Similar to thin-disc-only models, galaxies with appropriate non-axisymmetric structures reproduce observational constraints on radial disc heating in and migration to the Solar Neighbourhood (Snhd). The presence of thick discs can suppress non-axisymmetries and thus higher baryonic-to-dark matter fractions are required than in models that only have a thin disc. Models that are baryon-dominated to roughly the Solar radius R_0 are favoured, in agreement with data for the Milky Way. F…
In local disk galaxies such as our Milky Way, older stars generally inhabit a thicker disk than their younger counterparts. Two competing models have attempted to explain this result: one in which stars first form in thin disks that gradually thicken with time through dynamical heating, and one in which stars form in thick disks at early times and in progressively thinner disks at later times. We use a direct measure of the thicknesses of stellar disks at high redshift to discriminate between these scenarios. Using legacy HST imaging from the CANDELS and GOODS surveys, we measure the rest-opti…
Within a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, we form a disc galaxy with sub- components which can be assigned to a thin stellar disc, thick disk, and a low mass stellar halo via a chemical decomposition. The thin and thick disc populations so selected are distinct in their ages, kinematics, and metallicities. Thin disc stars are young (<6.6 Gyr), possess low velocity dispersion (σU,V,W = 41, 31, 25 km/s), high [Fe/H], and low [O/Fe]. The thick disc stars are old (6.6<age<9.8 Gyrs), lag the thin disc by \sim21 km/s, possess higher velocity dispersion (σU,V,W = 49, 44, 35 km/s), relatively l…
We present deep ACS images of 3 fields in the edge-on disk galaxy NGC 891, which extend from the plane of the disk to 12 kpc, and out to 25 kpc along the major axis. The photometry of individual stars reaches 2.5 magnitudes below the tip of the RGB. We use the astrophotometric catalogue to probe the stellar content and metallicity distribution across the thick disk and spheroid of NGC 891. The CMDs of thick disk and spheroid population are dominated by old RGB stars with a wide range of metallicities, from a metal-poor tail at [Fe/H] ~ -2.4 dex, up to about half-solar metallicity. The peak of …
The Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) is the terminal phase of red giant evolution with timescales of millions of years and a total mass lost from the star that is a significant fraction of the initial mass. Investigation of one of these stars, WISEA J173046.10-344455.5, a kpc in the direction of the center of the Galaxy, reveals a cool oxygen rich star with a dust shell of black-body temperature 1305 K.
As heating processes can broaden the distributions of radial actions and the vertical distributions of the Galactic disks, we investigate the vertical distribution of the Galactic disks as a function of radial action based on Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment(APOGEE) and Gaia data in order to deepen our understanding of the formation and heating history of the Galactic disks. We find that the distributions of radial action for both the thin and thick disks can be approximately described by pseudo-isothermal distributions, which give a statistical measurement for the temper…
Previous analyses of large databases of Milky Way stars have revealed the stellar disk of our Galaxy to be warped and that this imparts a strong signature on the kinematics of stars beyond the solar neighborhood. However, due to the limitation of accurate distance estimates, many attempts to explore the extent of these Galactic features have generally been restricted to a volume near the Sun. By combining Gaia DR2 astrometric solution, StarHorse distance and stellar abundances from the APOGEE survey, we present the most detailed and radially expansive study yet of the vertical and radial motio…
The thick disk rotation--metallicity correlation, \partial V_ϕ/\partial[Fe/H] =40÷50 km s^{-1}dex^{-1} represents an important signature of the formation processes of the galactic disk. We use nondissipative numerical simulations to follow the evolution of a Milky Way (MW)-like disk to verify if secular dynamical processes can account for this correlation in the old thick disk stellar population. We followed the evolution of an ancient disk population represented by 10 million particles whose chemical abundances were assigned by assuming a cosmologically plausible radial metallicity gradient w…
The outer Galactic disc contains some features such as the warp and flare, whose origin is still debated. The Gaia data provide an excellent opportunity to probe the Galactic disc at large distances and study these features. We derive the density distributions of the average (old) whole population and the supergiants (representative of a young population), and we use them to constrain their warp and flare. By comparing the results, we study how the properties of these phenomena depend on the studied population. We used Lucy's deconvolution method to recover corrected star counts as a function …
Based on the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometric data, we adopt SEDs fitting Method to evaluate the metallicity distribution for \sim40,000 main-sequence stars in the Galaxy. According to the derived photometric metallicities of these sample stars, we find that the metallicity distribution shift from metal-rich to metal-poor with the increase of distance from the Galactic center. The mean metallicity is about of 1.5 \pm 0.2dex in the outer halo and 1.3 \pm 0.1 dex in the inner halo. The mean metallicity smoothly decreases from -0.4 to -0.8 …
The presence of the Radcliffe wave is shown both in the positions and in the vertical velocities of masers and radio stars belonging to the Local Arm. This gives the impression that the structure of the Radcliffe wave is not a wave in the full sense of the word. It is more like a local high-amplitude burst, rapidly fading away. Moreover, this structure has the largest amplitude in the immediate vicinity of the Sun, where the main ``contributors'' are the Gould Belt stars. Based on the spectral analysis of masers, the following estimates of the geometric and kinematic characteristics of the wav…
We study the vertical stellar distribution of the Milky Way thin disk in detail with particular focus on the outer disk. We treat the galactic disk as a gravitationally coupled, three-component system consisting of stars, atomic hydrogen gas, and molecular hydrogen gas in the gravitational field of the dark matter halo. The self-consistent vertical distribution for stars and gas in such a realistic system is obtained for radii between 4-22 kpc. The inclusion of an additional gravitating component constrains the vertical stellar distribution toward the mid-plane, so that the mid-plane density i…
We study the shape of the thick disc using photometric data at high and intermediate latitudes from SDSS and 2MASS surveys. We use the population synthesis approach using an ABC-MCMC method to characterize the thick disc shape, scale height, scale length, local density and flare, and we investigate the extend of the thick disc formation period by simulating several formation episodes. We find that the vertical variation in density is not exponential, but much closer to an hyperbolic secant squared. Assuming a single formation epoch, the thick disc is better fitted with a sech2 scale height of …
We model the observed vertical distribution of the neutral hydrogen (HI) in the faint (M_B ~ -13.7 mag) edge-on dwarf irregular galaxy KK250. Our model assumes that the galaxy consists of axi-symmetric, co-planar gas and stellar discs in the external force-field of a spherical dark matter halo, and in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium. The velocity dispersion of the gas is left as a free parameter in the model. Our best fit model is able to reproduce the observed vertical distribution of the HI gas, as well as the observed velocity profiles. The best fit model has a large velocity dispersion (~…
Based on the data release of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope survey (LAMOST DR5) and the \emph{Gaia} Early Data Release 3 (\emph{Gaia} EDR3), we construct a sample containing 46,109 giant (log~$\emph{g}$ $\leqslant$ 3.5\,dex) stars with heliocentric distance d $\leqslant$ 4 kpc, and the sample is further divided into two groups of the inner ({\RGC} $<$ 8.34 \,kpc) and outer region ({\RGC} $>$ 8.34\,kpc). The {\LZ} distributions of our program stars in the panels with different [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe] suggest that the thick-disk consists of two distinct components with…

We study the vertical structure of polytropic, $P\propto ρ^Γ$, centrifugally-supported gaseous discs embedded in cold dark matter (CDM) halos. At fixed radius $R$, the shape of the vertical density profile depends only weakly on whether the disc is self-gravitating (SG) or not (NSG). The disc thickness, set by the midplane sound speed and circular velocity, $(c_s/V_c)R$, in the NSG case, and by the sound speed and surface density, $c_s^2/GΣ$, in SG discs, is smaller than either of these scales. SG discs are typically Toomre unstable, NSG discs are stable. Exponential discs in CDM halos with ro…
In the MW bulge, metal-rich stars form a strong bar and are more peanut-shaped than metal-poor stars. It has been recently claimed that this behavior is driven by the initial in-plane radial velocity dispersion of these populations, rather than by their initial vertical random motions. This has led to the suggestion that a thick disc is not necessary to explain the characteristics of the MW bulge. We rediscuss this issue by analyzing two dissipationless N-body simulations of boxy/peanut (b/p)-shaped bulges formed from composite stellar discs, made of kinematically cold and hot stellar populati…
We investigate radial and vertical metallicity gradients for a sample of red clump stars from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) Data Release 3. We select a total of 6781 stars, using a selection of colour, surface gravity and uncertainty in the derived space motion, and calculate for each star a probabilistic (kinematic) population assignment to a thin or thick disc using space motion and additionally another (dynamical) assignment using stellar vertical orbital eccentricity. We derive almost equal metallicity gradients as a function of Galactocentric distance for the high probability thin…
We have studied the kinematics of Galactic masers and radio stars with measured VLBI trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions. We have considered masers with relative trigonometric parallax errors less than 10\% and determined the Galactic rotation parameters from them. In particular, the linear rotation velocity of the Galaxy at the solar distance $R_0$ has been found to be $244.4\pm4.3$ km s$^{-1}$ (for the adopted $R_0=8.1\pm0.1$ kpc). We have performed a joint and separate spectral analysis of the radial, residual tangential, and vertical maser velocities. For example, from the vertical…
