We continue work of our earlier paper (Lewitzka and Brunner: Minimally generated abstract logics, Logica Universalis 3(2), 2009), where abstract logics and particularly intuitionistic abstract logics are studied. Abstract logics can be topologized in a direct and natural way. This facilitates a topological study of classes of concrete logics whenever they are given in abstract form. Moreover, such a direct topological approach avoids the often complex algebraic and lattice-theoretic machinery usually applied to represent logics. Motivated by that point of view, we define in this paper the category of intuitionistic abstract logics with stable logic maps as morphisms, and the category of implicative spectral spaces with spectral maps as morphisms. We show the equivalence of these categories and conclude that the larger categories of distributive abstract logics and distributive sober spaces are equivalent, too.
In [1], systems of weakening of intuitionistic negation logic called Z_n and CZ_n were developed in the spirit of da Costa's approach(c.f. [2]) by preserving, differently from da Costa, its fundamental properties: antitonicity, inversion and additivity for distributive lattices. However, according to [3], those systems turned out to be not paraconsistent but extensions of intuitionistic logic. Taking into account of this result, we shall here make some observations on the modified systems of Z_n and CZ_n, that are paraconsistent as well.
We study the correspondence theory of intuitionistic modal logic in modal Fairtlough-Mendler semantics (modal FM semantics) \cite{FaMe97}, which is the intuitionistic modal version of possibility semantics \cite{Ho16}. We identify the fragment of inductive formulas \cite{GorankoV06} in this language and give the algorithm $\mathsf{ALBA}$ \cite{CoPa12} in this semantic setting. There are two major features in the paper: one is that in the expanded modal language, the nominal variables, which are interpreted as atoms in perfect Boolean algebras, complete join-prime elements in perfect distributi…

We present the intuitionistic version of PUC-Logic. After that, we present a constructive approach to Lewis' counterfactual abstraction to show that it does not require the classical absurd rule.
This paper focuses on order-preserving logics defined from varieties of distributive lattices with negation, and in particular on the problem of whether these can be axiomatized by means of finite Hilbert calculi. On the side of negative results, we provide a syntactic condition on the equational presentation of a variety that entails failure of finite axiomatizability for the corresponding logic. An application of this result is that the logic of all distributive lattices with negation is not finitely axiomatizable; likewise, we establish that the order-preserving logic of the variety of all …
Based on an analysis of the inference rules used, we provide a characterization of the situations in which classical provability entails intuitionistic provability. We then examine the relationship of these derivability notions to uniform provability, a restriction of intuitionistic provability that embodies a special form of goal-directedness. We determine, first, the circumstances in which the former relations imply the latter. Using this result, we identify the richest versions of the so-called abstract logic programming languages in classical and intuitionistic logic. We then study the red…
We take a fresh look at the logics of informational dependence and independence of Hintikka and Sandu and Vaananen, and their compositional semantics due to Hodges. We show how Hodges' semantics can be seen as a special case of a general construction, which provides a context for a useful completeness theorem with respect to a wider class of models. We shed some new light on each aspect of the logic. We show that the natural propositional logic carried by the semantics is the logic of Bunched Implications due to Pym and O'Hearn, which combines intuitionistic and multiplicative connectives. Thi…
Logical frameworks based on intuitionistic or linear logics with higher-type quantification have been successfully used to give high-level, modular, and formal specifications of many important judgments in the area of programming languages and inference systems. Given such specifications, it is natural to consider proving properties about the specified systems in the framework: for example, given the specification of evaluation for a functional programming language, prove that the language is deterministic or that evaluation preserves types. One challenge in developing a framework for such rea…
We introduce a novel approach to secure compilation based on maps of distributive laws. We demonstrate through four examples that the coherence criterion for maps of distributive laws can potentially be a viable alternative for compiler security instead of full abstraction, which is the preservation and reflection of contextual equivalence. To that end, we also make use of the well-behavedness properties of distributive laws to construct a categorical argument for the contextual connotations of bisimilarity.
We overview the logic of Bunched Implications (BI) and Separation Logic (SL) from a perspective inspired by Hiroakira Ono's algebraic approach to substructural logics. We propose generalized BI algebras (GBI-algebras) as a common framework for algebras arising via "declarative resource reading", intuitionistic generalizations of relation algebras and arrow logics and the distributive Lambek calculus with intuitionistic implication. Apart from existing models of BI (in particular, heap models and effect algebras), we also cover models arising from weakening relations, formal languages or more f…
In the present paper, we propose Abstract Algebraic Logic (AAL) as a general logical framework for Judgment Aggregation. Our main contribution is a generalization of Herzberg's algebraic approach to characterization results in on judgment aggregation and propositional-attitude aggregation, characterizing certain Arrovian classes of aggregators as Boolean algebra and MV-algebra homomorphisms, respectively. The characterization result of the present paper applies to agendas of formulas of an arbitrary selfextensional logic. This notion comes from AAL, and encompasses a vast class of logics, of w…
Glivenko's theorem says that, in propositional logic, classical provability of a formula entails intuitionistic provability of double negation of that formula. We generalise Glivenko's theorem from double negation to an arbitrary nucleus, from provability in a calculus to an inductively generated abstract consequence relation, and from propositional logic to any set of objects whatsoever. The resulting conservation theorem comes with precise criteria for its validity, which allow us to instantly include Gödel's counterpart for first-order predicate logic of Glivenko's theorem. The open nucleus…
We propose a new definition of the representation theorem for many-valued logics, with modal operators as well, and define the stronger relationship between algebraic models of a given logic and relational structures used to define the Kripke possible-world semantics for it. Such a new framework offers a new semantics for many-valued logics based on the truth-invariance entailment. Consequently, it is substantially different from current definitions based on a matrix with a designated subset of logic values, used for the satisfaction relation, often difficult to fix. In the case when the many-…
Initial Semantics aims at interpreting the syntax associated to a signature as the initial object of some category of 'models', yielding induction and recursion principles for abstract syntax. Zsidó proves an initiality result for simply-typed syntax: given a signature S, the abstract syntax associated to S constitutes the initial object in a category of models of S in monads. However, the iteration principle her theorem provides only accounts for translations between two languages over a fixed set of object types. We generalize Zsidó's notion of model such that object types may vary, yielding…

We propose a categorial grammar based on classical multiplicative linear logic. This can be seen as an extension of abstract categorial grammars (ACG) and is at least as expressive. However, constituents of {\it linear logic grammars (LLG)} are not abstract $λ$-terms, but simply tuples of words with labeled endpoints and supplied with specific {\it plugging instructions}: the sets of endpoints are subdivided into the {\it incoming} and the {\it outgoing} parts. We call such objects {\it word cobordisms}. A key observation is that word cobordisms can be organized in a category, very similar to …
A general definition of mathematical morphology has been defined within the algebraic framework of complete lattice theory. In this framework, dealing with deterministic and increasing operators, a dilation (respectively an erosion) is an operation which is distributive over supremum (respectively infimum). From this simple definition of dilation and erosion, we cannot say much about the properties of them. However, when they form an adjunction, many important properties can be derived such as monotonicity, idempotence, and extensivity or anti-extensivity of their composition, preservation of …
The term ``Boolean category'' should be used for describing an object that is to categories what a Boolean algebra is to posets. More specifically, a Boolean category should provide the abstract algebraic structure underlying the proofs in Boolean Logic, in the same sense as a Cartesian closed category captures the proofs in intuitionistic logic and a *-autonomous category captures the proofs in linear logic. However, recent work has shown that there is no canonical axiomatisation of a Boolean category. In this work, we will see a series (with increasing strength) of possible such axiomatisati…
Intuitionistic logic, in which the double negation law not-not-P = P fails, is dominant in categorical logic, notably in topos theory. This paper follows a different direction in which double negation does hold. The algebraic notions of effect algebra/module that emerged in theoretical physics form the cornerstone. It is shown that under mild conditions on a category, its maps of the form X -> 1+1 carry such effect module structure, and can be used as predicates. Predicates are identified in many different situations, and capture for instance ordinary subsets, fuzzy predicates in a probabilist…
