Data from 105 days from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC) have been used to place a new limit on an isotropic diffuse gamma-ray population above 10 TeV. High- energy isotropic diffuse gamma-ray emission is produced by unresolved extragalactic objects such as active galactic nuclei, with potential contributions from interactions of high-energy cosmic rays with the inter-Galactic medium, or dark matter annihilation. Isotropic diffuse gamma-ray emission has been observed up to nearly 1 TeV. Above this energy, only upper limits have been reported. Observations or limits of the isotropic photon population above these energies are very sensitive to local astrophysical particle production. Of particular note, we expect a photon population to accompany the TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrino detection seen in the IceCube instrument. Observations or limits of a photon population above this energy can point to the origin of these neutrinos, indicating whether they are within the gamma-ray horizon or not. HAWC, with superior sensitivity to gamma rays between 100 GeV and 100 TeV, continuously observes the overhead sky and will measure or constrain isotropic emission above 1 TeV. We present a limit above 10 TeV based on the background rejection achieved in a 105-day observation of the Crab Nebula with HAWC. The limit will improve substantially with additional data and study.
The Diffuse Gamma-Ray Background (DGB) above 100 GeV at high-latitudes is expected to be produced by unresolved extragalactic objects such as active galactic nuclei, isotropic Galactic gamma-rays, and possible emission from dark matter annihilations or decays in the Galactic dark matter halo. The DGB has been observed up to nearly 1 TeV, but has yet to be detected at higher energies. Detections or stringent limits on the DGB above this energy would have strong multimessenger consequences, such as constraining the origin of astrophysical neutrinos observed in IceCube. The High Altitude Water Ch…
HAWC J1826-128 is one of the brightest Galactic TeV gamma-ray sources detected by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory, with photon energies extending up to nearly $\sim$100 TeV. This HAWC source spatially coincides with the H.E.S.S. TeV source HESS J1826-130 and the "Eel" pulsar wind nebula (PWN), which is associated with the GeV pulsar PSR J1826-1256. In the X-ray band, Chandra and XMM-Newton revealed that the Eel PWN is composed of both a compact nebula ($\sim$15") and diffuse X-ray emission ($\sim$6'$\times$2') extending away from the pulsar. Our NuSTAR observation detected…
The high-energy Diffuse Gamma-Ray Background (DGRB) is expected to be produced by unresolved isotropically distributed astrophysical objects, potentially including dark matter annihilation or decay emissions in galactic or extragalactic structures. The DGRB has only been observed below 1 TeV; above this energy, upper limits have been reported. Observations or stringent limits on the DGRB above this energy could have significant multi-messenger implications, such as constraining the origin of TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observato…

The nature of the $γ$-ray emission from the \emph{Fermi} bubbles is unknown. Both hadronic and leptonic models have been formulated to explain the peculiar $γ$-ray signal observed by the Fermi-LAT between 0.1-500~GeV. If this emission continues above $\sim$30~TeV, hadronic models of the \emph{Fermi} bubbles would provide a significant contribution to the high-energy neutrino flux detected by the IceCube observatory. Even in models where leptonic $γ$-rays produce the \emph{Fermi} bubbles flux at GeV energies, a hadronic component may be observable at very high energies. The combination of IceCu…
2HWC J1928+177 is a Galactic TeV gamma-ray source detected by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory up to ~ 56 TeV. The HAWC source, later confirmed by H.E.S.S., still remains unidentified as a dark accelerator since there is no apparent supernova remnant or pulsar wind nebula detected in the lower energy bands. The radio pulsar PSR J1928+1746, coinciding with the HAWC source position, has no X-ray counterpart. Our SED modeling shows that inverse Compton scattering in the putative pulsar wind nebula can account for the TeV emission only if the unseen nebula is extended beyond r …
Isotropic diffuse gamma-ray flux in the PeV energy band is an important tool for multimessenger tests of models of the origin of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and for new-physics searches. So far, this flux has not yet been observed. Carpet-2 is an air-shower experiment capable of detecting astrophysical gamma rays with energies above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the upper limits on the isotropic gamma-ray flux from Carpet-2 data obtained in 1999-2011 and 2018-2022. These results, obtained with the new statistical method based on the shape of the muon-number distribution, summarize Carpet-2 o…
Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) DA 495 (G65.7+1.2) was detected in TeV gamma-rays by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC) in 2017 (2HWC J1953+294). Follow-up observations by the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) confirmed the association between 2HWC J1953+294 and DA 495 and found the TeV emission to be spatially coincident with the radio emission first reported in 1968. The detection of TeV gamma-rays from DA 495, along with past X-ray detection up to 10 keV, prompted high energy X-ray observations as part of the NuSTAR Galactic Legacy Survey. We prese…
Recent TeV observations of nearby pulsars with the HAWC telescope have been interpreted as evidence that the diffusion of high-energy electrons and positrons within pulsar wind nebulae is highly inefficient compared to the rest of the interstellar medium. If the diffusion coefficient well outside the nebula is close to the value inferred for the region inside the nebula, high-energy electrons and positrons produced by the two observed pulsars could not contribute significantly to the local measured cosmic-ray flux. The HAWC Collaboration thus concluded that, under the assumption of isotropic a…

We propose a new method to search for axion-like particles (ALPs) based on the gamma-rays produced concomitant with high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The existence of high-energy neutrinos implies production of gamma-rays in the same sources. Photons can convert into ALPs in the sources' magnetic fields, and will travel as ALPs through extragalactic space. Back-conversion in the Milky Way's magnetic field leads to a diffuse anisotropic high-energy photon flux that existing and upcoming gamma-ray detectors, like HAWC, CTA, and LHAASO can detect. This method probes unexplored ALP parameter sp…
Observations by HAWC indicate that many young pulsars (including Geminga and Monogem) are surrounded by spatially extended, multi-TeV emitting regions. It is not currently known, however, whether TeV emission is also produced by recycled, millisecond pulsars (MSPs). In this study, we perform a stacked analysis of 24 MSPs within HAWC's field-of-view, finding between 2.6-3.2 sigma evidence that these sources are, in fact, surrounded by TeV halos. The efficiency with which these MSPs produce TeV halos is similar to that exhibited by young pulsars. This result suggests that several dozen MSPs will…
The distribution of cosmic rays in the Galaxy at energies above few TeVs is still uncertain and this affects the expectations for the diffuse gamma flux produced by hadronic interactions of cosmic rays with the interstellar gas. We show that the TeV gamma-ray sky can provide interesting constraints. Namely, we compare the flux from the galactic plane measured by Argo-YBJ, HESS, HAWC and Milagro with the expected flux due to diffuse emission and point-like and extended sources observed by HESS showing that experimental data can already discriminate among different hyphoteses for cosmic ray dist…
The gamma-ray source 3HWC J1928+178, discovered by HAWC, is coincident with the 82 kyr pulsar PSR J1928+1746, located 4 kpc away. It has not been reported by any Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT), until the recent detection of emission from this region by H.E.S.S., using an analysis adapted to extended sources. No counterpart in GeV gamma-rays from Fermi-LAT data or in X-ray has been reported so far. In this contribution, I give the multiwavelength context of the region surrounding 3HWC J1928+178 and present a multi-component model derived using the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihoo…
Cosmic-ray (CR) diffusion is the result of the interaction of such charged particles against magnetic fluctuations. These fluctuations originate from large-scale turbulence cascading towards smaller spatial scales, decomposed into three different modes, as described by $magneto-hydro-dynamics$ (MHD) theory. As a consequence, the description of particle diffusion strongly depends on the model describing the injected turbulence. Moreover, the amount of energy assigned to each of the three modes is in general not equally divided, which implies that diffusion properties might be different from one…
The origins of the extraterrestrial neutrinos observed in IceCube have yet to be determined. In this study we perform a one-point fluctuation analysis of the six-year high-energy starting event (HESE) shower data, with fixed non-Poissonian contributions from atmospheric, Galactic and some extragalactic components, as well as an isotropic (and weakly non-Poissonian) template. In addition to the star-forming galaxies and blazars, our analysis suggests the presence of an additional isotropic component, not associated with any known class of sources, with best-fit intensity of $(2.8\pm0.2)\times 1…
Current and Future Constraints on Dark Matter from Prompt and Inverse-Compton Photon Emission in the Isotropic Diffuse Gamma-ray Background

High energy emissions near particle accelerators provide unique windows to probe the particle acceleration and ensuing escape process determined by local medium properties, particularly the turbulence properties. It has been demonstrated both theoretically and observationally that particle diffusion in local environment can differ from the averaged values inferred from the CR global propagation in the Galaxy determined by local medium, particularly magnetic field and turbulence. A recent publication by Fornieri & Zhang (2022) computed particle transport employing the formalism of fast modes sc…
We report a discovery of diffuse X-ray emission around the supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7, which is associated with VER J2227+608 and HAWC J2227+610 and is known as a candidate for a PeV cosmic ray accelerator (PeVatron). We analyze observational data of Suzaku around the SNR and the adjacent pulsar PSR J2229+6114. We find diffuse X-ray emission that is represented by either thermal or non-thermal one. However, the metal abundance for the thermal emission is <0.13 Z_sun, which may be too small in the Milky Way and suggests that the emission is non-thermal. The intensity of the diffuse emis…
The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has revealed a diffuse $γ$-ray background at energies from 0.1 GeV to 1 TeV, which can be separated into Galactic emission and an isotropic, extragalactic component. Previous efforts to understand the latter have been hampered by the lack of physical models capable of predicting the $γ$-ray emission produced by the many candidate sources, primarily active galactic nuclei and star-forming galaxies, leaving their contributions poorly constrained. Here we present a calculation of the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the $γ$-ray background that does not …
Recently, the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) collaboration reported the discovery of the TeV halo around the Geminga pulsar. The TeV emission is believed to originate from inverse Compton scattering of pulsar-injected electrons/positrons off cosmic microwave background photons. In the mean time, these electrons should inevitably radiate X-ray photons via the synchrotron radiation, providing a useful constraint on the magnetic field in the TeV halo. In this work, we analyse the data of XMM-Newton and Chandra, and obtain an upper limit for the diffuse X-ray flux in a region of $600''$ arou…
Recently, gamma-ray halos of a few degree extension have been detected around two middle-aged pulsars, namely, Geminga and PSR B0656+14, by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov observatory (HAWC). The gamma-ray radiation arise from relativistic electrons that escape the pulsar wind nebula and diffuse in the surrounding medium. The diffusion coefficient is found to be significantly lower than the average value in the Galactic disk. If so, given a typical transverse velocity of $300-500{\,\rm km /s}$ for a pulsar, its displacement could be important in shaping the morphology of its gamma-ray halos.…
The HAWC (High Altitude Water Cherenkov) collaboration recently published their 2HWC catalog, listing 39 very high energy (VHE; >100~GeV) gamma-ray sources based on 507 days of observation. Among these, there are nineteen sources that are not associated with previously known TeV sources. We have studied fourteen of these sources without known counterparts with VERITAS and Fermi-LAT. VERITAS detected weak gamma-ray emission in the 1~TeV-30~TeV band in the region of DA 495, a pulsar wind nebula coinciding with 2HWC J1953+294, confirming the discovery of the source by HAWC. We did not find any co…
