We propose a novel approach for strong alignment of gas-phase molecules for experiments at arbitrary repetition rates. A high-intracavity-power continuous-wave laser will provide the necessary ac electric field of $\!10^{10}$- $10^{11}~\text{W}/\text{cm}^2$. We demonstrate thin-disk lasers based on Yb:YAG and Yb:Lu$_2$O$_3$ in a linear high-finesse resonator providing intracavity power levels in excess of 100~kW at pump power levels on the order of 50~W. The multi-longitudinal-mode operation of this laser avoids spatial-hole burning even in a linear standing-wave resonator. The system will be scaled up as in-vacuum system to allow for the generation of fields of $10^{11}~\text{W}/\text{cm}^2$. This system will be directly applicable for experiments at modern X-ray light sources, such as synchrotrons or free-electron lasers, which operate at various very high repetition rates. This would allow to record molecular movies through temporally resolved diffractive imaging of fixed-in-space molecules, as well as the spectroscopic investigation of combined X-ray-NIR strong-field effects of atomic and molecular systems.
We propose an enantio-detection method of chiral molecules in a cavity with external drive. The chiral molecules are coupled with a quantized cavity field and two classical light fields to form the cyclic three-level systems. The chirality-dependent cavity-assisted three-photon process in the three-level systems leads to the generation of intracavity photons. Simultaneously, the drive field also results in the chirality-independent process of the generation of intracavity photons. Based on the interference between the intracavity photons generated from these two processes, one can detect the e…
Permeable mirrors are typically used for coupling photons out of laser cavities. A similar approach was proposed for output coupling photons from the cavities of x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) oscillators. One of the Bragg-reflecting crystal mirrors is thin, just a few extinction length, and is used as a permeable mirror. However, this method is very often limited to extractions of only a few tenths of the intracavity power. Other cavity-based XFELs, such as the high-gain regenerative amplifier XFEL, require much higher outcoupling efficiency. Here, alternative schemes are proposed and analy…
We devise a laser-controlled adaptive optical element which operates intracavity under high intensity radiation. This element substitutes a conventional mechanically deformable mirror and is free of critical heat-sensitive components and electronics. The deformation mechanism is based on the projection of a CW control laser onto a specially designed mirror. Mounted to a water-cooled heat sink, the mirror can handle laser radiation beyond 3 MW/cm^2. The properties of the adaptive optical element including the maximum correctable wavefront pitch of 800 nm are discussed. The successful implementa…
A single transverse mode high pulse-energy VECSEL was developed. The GaSb based VECSEL emits at a wavelength of 2.04 microns with a peak power exceeding 500W while maintaining good beam quality. The cavity employs a Pockels cell combined with a low-loss thin film polarizer to selectively dump the intracavity energy into a 10ns pulse. The laser has promise for incoherent LiDAR, materials processing, gas sensing, and nonlinear optics.
Optical microcavity enhanced light-matter interaction offers a powerful tool to develop fast and precise sensing techniques, spurring applications in the detection of biochemical targets ranging from cells, nanoparticles, and large molecules. However, the intrinsic inertness of such pristine microresonators limits their spread in new fields such as gas detection. Here, a functionalized microlaser sensor is realized by depositing graphene in an erbium-doped over-modal microsphere. By using a 980 nm pump, multiple laser lines excited in different mode families of the microresonator are co-genera…
Phonon polaritons (PPs) in van der Waals (vdW) materials can strongly enhance light-matter interactions at mid-infrared frequencies, owing to their extreme infrared field confinement and long lifetimes. PPs thus bear potential for achieving vibrational strong coupling (VSC) with molecules. Although the onset of VSC has recently been observed spectroscopically with PP nanoresonators, no experiments so far have resolved VSC in real space and with propagating modes in unstructured layers. Here, we demonstrate by real-space nanoimaging that VSC can be achieved between propagating PPs in thin vdW c…
Ultrafast laser systems operating with high-average power in the wavelength range from 1.9 um to 3 um are of interest for a wide range of applications for example in spectroscopy, material processing and as drivers for secondary sources in the XUV spectral region. In this area, laser systems based on holmium-doped gain materials directly emitting at 2.1 um have made significant progress over the past years, however so far only very few results were demonstrated in power-scalable high-power laser geometries. In particular, the thin-disk geometry is promising for directly modelocked oscillators …
We calculated third order non-linear polarization to estimate the two-photon absorption of non-interacting two-level molecules in the transmission-type degenerate pump-probe geometry. The spectral intensity and the phase changes of the laser pulses when passing through a thin dielectric slab composed of the molecules were considered. We also investigated the effect of the decay rate of the molecules and the chirp of the pulses on their spectral intensity and phase changes.
Vibrational strong coupling of molecules to optical cavities based on plasmonic resonances has been explored recently, because plasmonic near-fields can provide strong coupling in sub-diffraction limited volumes. Such field localization maximizes coupling strength, which is crucial for modifying the vibrational response of molecules and, thereby, manipulating chemical reactions. Here, we demonstrate an angle-independent plasmonic nanodisk substrate that overcomes limitations of traditional Fabry-Perot optical cavities, because the design can strongly couple with all molecules on the surface of…
