Thermal transport in solids changes its nature from phonon propagation that suffers from perturbative scattering to thermally activated hops between localized vibrational modes as the level of disorder increases. Models have been proposed to understand these two distinct extremes that predict opposite temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity, but not for the transition or the intermediate regime. Here we explore thermal transport in two-dimensional crystalline and amorphous silica with varying levels of disorder, α, by performing atomistic simulations as well as analysis based on the kinetic and Allen-Feldman theories. We demonstrate the crossover between the crystalline and amorphous regimes at α ~ 0.3, which can be identified by a turnover of the temperature dependence in thermal conductivity, and explained by the dominance of thermal hopping processes. The determination of this critical disorder level is also validated by the analysis of the participation ratio of localized vibrational modes, and the spatial localization of heat flux. These factors can serve as key indicators in characterizing the transition in heat transport mechanisms.
In this paper we investigate the electron-phonon coupling in bilayer graphene, as a paradigmatic case for multilayer graphenes where interlayer hoppings are relevant. Using a frozen-phonon approach within the context of Density Functional Theory (DFT) and using different optical phonon displacements we are able to evaluate quantitatively the electron-phonon coupling $α_i$ associated with each hopping term $γ_i$. This analysis also reveals a simple scaling law between the hopping terms $γ_i$ and the electron-phonon coupling $α_i$ which goes beyond the specific DFT technique employed.

We performed direct calculations of carrier hopping rates in strongly disordered conjugated polymers based on the atomic structure of the system, the corresponding electronic states and their coupling to all phonon modes. We found that the dependence of hopping rates on distance and the dependence of the mobility on temperature are significantly different than the ones stemming from the simple Miller-Abrahams model, regardless of the choice of the parameters in the model. A new model that satisfactorily describes the hopping rates in the system and avoids the explicit calculation of electron-p…
Charge carriers that execute multi-phonon hopping generally interact strongly enough with phonons to form polarons. A polarons sluggish motion is linked to slowly shifting atomic displacements that severely reduce the intrinsic width of its transport band. Here a means to estimate hopping polarons bandwidths from Seebeck-coefficient measurements is described. The magnitudes of semiconductors Seebeck coefficients are usually quite large (greater than 86 microvolts/K) near room temperature. However, in accord with the third law of thermodynamics, Seebeck coefficients must vanish at absolute zero…
We derive a t-J model with electron-phonon coupling from the three-band model, considering modulation of both hopping and Coulomb integrals by phonons. While the modulation of the hopping integrals dominates, the modulation of the Coulomb integrals cannot be neglected. The model explains the experimentally observed anomalous softening of the half-breathing mode upon doping and a weaker softening of the breathing mode. It is shown that other phonons are not strongly influenced, and, in particular, the coupling to a buckling mode is not strong in this model.
Detailed theoretical derivation is given for the tunnel magnetoresistance via phonon-assisted hopping through an impurity chain under small magnetic field and a large bias window. This derivation provides a rigorous basis for the physical picture of Pauli blockade switch proposed in our previous paper (arXiv:1404.0633). This picture captures the competition of external magnetic field and internal spin interactions in the tunnel barrier, and relies critically on the strong on-site Coulomb correlation at the impurities. The master equations are obtained by deriving the equations of motion for th…
Predicting charge transport in organic molecular crystals is notoriously challenging. Carrier mobility calculations in organic semiconductors are dominated by quantum chemistry methods based on charge hopping, which are laborious and only moderately accurate. We compute from first principles the electron-phonon scattering and the phonon-limited hole mobility of naphthalene crystal in the framework of ab initio band theory. Our calculations combine GW electronic bandstructures, ab initio electron-phonon scattering, and the Boltzmann transport equation. The calculated hole mobility is in very go…
Time-resolved two color pump-probe polarization spectroscopy was performed at room temperature on SrTiO3 films grown directly on Si with film thickness varying from 2 nm to 7.8 nm. The E soft mode with a characteristic frequency of 0.2 THz is impulsively generated and measured in these coherently strained tetragonal phase SrTiO3 thin films. Another over-damped signal observed indicates the possible relaxational hopping of Ti ion between double potential wells. The dependence of the coherent phonon signal on pump and probe laser polarization helps to identify the phonon modes.
We develop a theory to study the characteristics of dipolar / strain fluctuations in perovskite relaxors. In addition to the soft TO and TA phonons, we take into account another freedom of motion associated with the random hopping of $\mathrm{Pb^{2+}}$ ions between the off-center sites around the high symmetry corner site, thus constructing a coupled TO-TA-pseudospin model to describe the perovskite relaxors. It is shown that there is a possibility that prior to the on-set of instability of the uniform TO-mode (soft-mode), instability of TA mode with nanometer scale modulation $(\mathbf{q}\sim…
The nonlocal electron-phonon couplings in organic semiconductors responsible for the fluctuation of intermolecular transfer integrals has been the center of interest recently. Several irreconcilable scenarios coexist for the description of the nonlocal electron-phonon coupling, such as phonon-assisted transport, transient localization, and band-like transport. Through a nearly exact numerical study for the carrier mobility of the Holstein-Peierls model using the matrix product states approach, we locate the phonon-assisted transport, transient localization and band-like regimes as a function o…
Inspired by Holstein's work on small polaron hopping, the evolution equations of localized states and extended states in presence of atomic vibrations are derived for an amorphous semiconductor. The transition probabilities are obtained for four types of transitions: from one localized state to another localized state, from a localized state to an extended state, from an extended state to a localized state, and from one extended state to another extended state. At a temperature not too low, any process involving localized state is activated. The computed mobility of the transitions between loc…
Using a controlled analytic non-perturbative treatment, that accounts for the quantum nature of the phonons, we derive a model that generically describes cooperative breathing-mode at strong electron-phonon interaction in one-band one-dimensional systems. The effective model involves a {\em next-nearest-neighbor} hopping (that dominates over the nearest-neighbor hopping at strong coupling) and a nearest-neighbor repulsion that is significantly enhanced due to incompatibility of neighboring dilations/compressions. At non-half filling, upon tuning the electron-phonon coupling, the system undergo…
In this work, we investigate the symmetry of the phonon landscape of twisted kagome lattices across their duality boundary. The study is inspired by recent work by Fruchart et al. [Nature, 577, 2020], who specialized the notion of duality to the mechanistic problem of kagome lattices and linked it to the existence of duality transformations between configurations that are symmetrically located across a critical transition point in configuration space. Our first goal is to elucidate how the existence of matching phonon spectra between dual configurations manifest in terms of observable wavefiel…

The protonic conductivity in the hydrogen bonded chains is investigated theoretically in the framework of the two-stage transport model. The strong interactions with optical phonon stretching mode are considered. We obtain the transition from the insulator to the metal-type state from the temperature dependencies of the hopping conductivity and analyze the influence of the specific Grotthuss mechanism on the transition character. We investigate also the main peculiarities in the frequency dependencies of the band and hopping conductivity parts which appear due to above-mentioned two-stage proc…
