A majority logic decoder made of unreliable logic gates, whose failures are transient and datadependent, is analyzed. Based on a combinatorial representation of fault configurations a closed-form expression for the average bit error rate for an one-step majority logic decoder is derived, for a regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensemble and the proposed failure model. The presented analysis framework is then used to establish bounds on the one-step majority logic decoder performance under the simplified probabilistic gate-output switching model. Based on the expander property of Tanner graphs of LDPC codes, it is proven that a version of the faulty parallel bit flipping decoder can correct a fixed fraction of channel errors in the presence of data-dependent gate failures. The results are illustrated with numerical examples of finite geometry codes.
Non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have some advantages over their binary counterparts, but unfortunately their decoding complexity is a significant challenge. The iterative hard- and soft-reliability based majority-logic decoding algorithms are attractive for non-binary LDPC codes, since they involve only finite field additions and multiplications as well as integer operations and hence have significantly lower complexity than other algorithms. In this paper, we propose two improvements to the majority-logic decoding algorithms. Instead of the accumulation of reliability informa…
Rudolph (1967) introduced one-step majority logic decoding for linear codes derived from combinatorial designs. The decoder is easily realizable in hardware and requires that the dual code has to contain the blocks of so called geometric designs as codewords. Peterson and Weldon (1972) extended Rudolphs algorithm to a two-step majority logic decoder correcting the same number of errors than Reed's celebrated multi-step majority logic decoder. Here, we study the codes from subspace designs. It turns out that these codes have the same majority logic decoding capability as the codes from geometri…
In this article, we consider the decoding problem of Grassmann codes using majority logic. We show that for two points of the Grassmannian, there exists a canonical path between these points once a complete flag is fixed. These paths are used to construct a large set of parity checks orthogonal on a coordinate of the code, resulting in a majority decoding algorithm.
We consider the decoding of LDPC codes over GF(q) with the low-complexity majority algorithm from [1]. A modification of this algorithm with multiple thresholds is suggested. A lower estimate on the decoding radius realized by the new algorithm is derived. The estimate is shown to be better than the estimate for a single threshold majority decoder. At the same time the transition to multiple thresholds does not affect the order of complexity.
In this article, we consider Schubert codes, linear codes associated to Schubert varieties, and discuss minimum weight codewords for dual Schubert codes. The notion of lines in Schubert varieties is looked closely at, and it has been proved that the supports of the minimum weight codewords of the dual Schubert codes lie on lines and any three points on a line in Schubert variety correspond to the support of some minimum weight parity check for the Schubert code. We use these lines in Schubert varieties to construct orthogonal parity checks for certain Schubert codes and use them for majority l…

We propose a new class of efficient decoding algorithms for Reed-Muller (RM) codes over binary-input memoryless channels. The algorithms are based on projecting the code on its cosets, recursively decoding the projected codes (which are lower-order RM codes), and aggregating the reconstructions (e.g., using majority votes). We further provide extensions of the algorithms using list-decoding. We run our algorithm for AWGN channels and Binary Symmetric Channels at the short code length ($\le 1024$) regime for a wide range of code rates. Simulation results show that in both low code rate and high…

The decoding performance of product codes and staircase codes based on iterative bounded-distance decoding (iBDD) can be improved with the aid of a moderate amount of soft information, maintaining a low decoding complexity. One promising approach is error-and-erasure (EaE) decoding, whose performance can be reliably estimated with density evolution (DE). However, the extrinsic message passing (EMP) decoder required by the DE analysis entails a much higher complexity than the simple intrinsic message passing (IMP) decoder. In this paper, we simplify the EMP decoding algorithm for the EaE channe…
Polar codes have emerged as the most favorable channel codes for their unique capacity-achieving property. To date, numerous works have been reported for efficient design of polar codes decoder. However, these prior efforts focused on design of polar decoders via deterministic computation, while the behavior of stochastic polar decoder, which can have potential advantages such as low complexity and strong error-resilience, has not been studied in existing literatures. This paper, for the first time, investigates polar decoding using stochastic logic. Specifically, the commonly-used successive …
We present novel decoding schemes for hard and soft decision decoding of block codes using the minimal weight codewords of the dual code. The decoding schemes will be described for cyclic codes where polynomials can be used, however, the modification for non-cyclic codes is possible and straight forward. The hard decision decoding calculates syndrome polynomials which are the product of the received polynomial with dual codewords. Proper cyclic shifts of these syndrome polynomials are obtained and the non-zero positions are counted componentwise for these shifts. The values of this counting ar…

Quantum error correction is necessary to protect logical quantum states and operations. However, no meaningful data protection can be made when the syndrome extraction is erroneous due to faulty measurement gates. Quantum data-syndrome (DS) codes are designed to protect the data qubits and syndrome bits concurrently. In this paper, we propose an efficient decoding algorithm for quantum DS codes with sparse check matrices. Based on a refined belief propagation (BP) decoding for stabilizer codes, we propose a DS-BP algorithm to handle the quaternary quantum data errors and binary syndrome bit er…
Polar codes are the first error-correcting codes to provably achieve the channel capacity but with infinite codelengths. For finite codelengths the existing decoder architectures are limited in working frequency by the partial sums computation unit. We explain in this paper how the partial sums computation can be seen as a matrix multiplication. Then, an efficient hardware implementation of this product is investigated. It has reduced logic resources and interconnections. Formalized architectures, to compute partial sums and to generate the bits of the generator matrix k^n, are presented. The …
