Observations of thermal radiation from neutron stars can potentially provide information about the states of supranuclear matter in the interiors of these stars with the aid of the theory of neutron-star thermal evolution. We review the basics of this theory for isolated neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, including most relevant thermodynamic and kinetic properties in the stellar core, crust, and blanketing envelopes.
The observed rapid cooling of the neutron star Cassiopeia A is usually interpreted as being caused by transitions of neutrons and protons in the star's core from the normal state to the superfluid and superconducting state. However, this so-called "minimal" cooling paradigm faces the problem of numerically simulating the observed anomalously fast drop in the neutron star surface temperature using theoretical neutrino energy losses from superfluid neutrons. As a solution to this problem, I propose a somewhat more complex cooling model, in which, in addition to superfluid neutrons, direct Urca p…
We model the cooling of hybrid neutron stars combining a microscopic nuclear equation of state in the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach with different quark models. We then analyze the neutron star cooling curves predicted by the different models and single out the preferred ones. We find that the possibility of neutron p-wave pairing can be excluded in our scenario.
The cooling of the Cassiopeia A neutron star as a probe of a triplet neutron pairing in the core
We study the relative importance of several recent updates of microphysics input to the neutron star cooling theory and the effects brought about by superstrong magnetic fields of magnetars, including the effects of the Landau quantization in their crusts. We use a finite-difference code for simulation of neutron-star thermal evolution on timescales from hours to megayears with an updated microphysics input. The consideration of short timescales ($\lesssim1$ yr) is made possible by a treatment of the heat-blanketing envelope without the quasistationary approximation inherent to its treatment i…
Whether fast cooling processes occur or not is crucial for the thermal evolution of neutron stars. In particular, the threshold of the direct Urca process, which is one of the fast cooling processes, is determined by the interior proton fraction $Y_p$, or the nuclear symmetry energy. Since recent observations indicate the small radius of neutron stars, a low value is preferred for the symmetry energy. In this study, simulations of neutron star cooling are performed adopting three models for equation of state (EoS): Togashi, Shen, and LS220 EoSs. The Togashi EoS has been recently constructed wi…
Ages and thermal luminosities of neutron stars, inferred from observations, can be interpreted with the aid of the neutron star cooling theory to gain information on the properties of superdense matter in neutron-star interiors. We present a survey of estimated ages, surface temperatures and thermal luminosities of middle-aged neutron stars with relatively weak or moderately strong magnetic fields, which can be useful for these purposes. The catalogue includes results selected from the literature, supplemented with new results of spectral analysis of a few cooling neutron stars. The data are c…
We study the cooling of isolated neutron stars with particular regard to the importance of nuclear pairing gaps. A microscopic nuclear equation of state derived in the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach is used together with compatible neutron and proton pairing gaps. We then study the effect of modifying the gaps on the final deduced neutron star mass distributions. We find that a consistent description of all current cooling data can be achieved and a reasonable neutron star mass distribution can be predicted employing the (slightly reduced by about 40\%) proton 1S0 Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (B…
In accreting neutron star X-ray transients, the neutron star crust can be substantially heated out of thermal equilibrium with the core during an accretion outburst. The observed subsequent cooling in quiescence (when accretion has halted) offers a unique opportunity to study the structure and thermal properties of the crust. Initially crust cooling modelling studies focussed on transient X-ray binaries with prolonged accretion outbursts (> 1 year) such that the crust would be significantly heated for the cooling to be detectable. Here we present the results of applying a theoretical model to …
We model neutron star cooling with several microscopic nuclear equations of state based on different nucleon-nucleon interactions and three-body forces, and compatible with the recent GW170817 neutron star merger event. They all feature strong direct Urca processes. We find that all models are able to describe well the current set of cooling data for isolated neutron stars, provided that large and extended proton 1S0 gaps and no neutron 3PF2 gaps are active in the stellar matter. We then analyze the neutron star mass distributions predicted by the different models and single out the preferred …
We present a quantitative analysis of superfluidity and superconductivity in dense matter from observations of isolated neutron stars in the context of the minimal cooling model. Our new approach produces the best fit neutron triplet superfluid critical temperature, the best fit proton singlet superconducting critical temperature, and their associated statistical uncertainties. We find that the neutron triplet critical temperature is likely $2.09^{+4.37}_{-1.41} \times 10^{8}$ K and that the proton singlet critical temperature is $7.59^{+2.48}_{-5.81} \times 10^{9}$ K. However, we also show th…
Recent observations have found several candidates for old warm neutron stars whose surface temperatures are above the prediction of the standard neutron star cooling scenario, and thus require some heating mechanism. Motivated by these observations, we study the non-equilibrium beta process in the minimal cooling scenario of neutron stars, which inevitably occurs in pulsars. This out-of-equilibrium process yields the late time heating in the core of a neutron star, called the rotochemical heating, and significantly changes the time evolution of the neutron star surface temperature. To perform …
Neutron stars cooling after sustained accretion outbursts provide unique information about the neutron star crust and underlying dense matter. Comparisons between astronomical observations of these cooling transients and model calculations of neutron star crust cooling have frequently been used to constrain neutron star properties such as the mass, radius, crust composition, and presence of nuclear pasta. These calculations often use a fixed pressure at which the crust-core transition happens, though this quantity depends on the dense matter equation of state. We demonstrate that varying the c…
Using a model for the equation of state and composition of dense matter and the magnitude of singlet proton superconductivity and triplet neutron superfluidity, we perform the first simultaneous fit of neutron star masses and radii determined from observations of quiescent low-mass x-ray binaries and luminosities and ages determined from observations of isolated neutron stars. We find that the Vela pulsar strongly determines the values inferred for the superfluid/superconducting gaps and the neutron star radius. We find, regardless of whether or not the Vela pulsar is included in the analysis,…
A critical relation in the study of neutron star cooling is the one between surface temperature and interior temperature. This relation is determined by the composition of the neutron star envelope and can be affected by the process of diffusive nuclear burning (DNB), which occurs when elements diffuse to depths where the density and temperature are sufficiently high to ignite nuclear burning. We calculate models of H-He and He-C envelopes that include DNB and obtain analytic temperature relations that can be used in neutron star cooling simulations. We find that DNB can lead to a rapidly chan…
Nuclear reactions heat and cool the crust of accreting neutron stars and need to be understood to interpret observations of X-ray bursts and of long-term cooling in transiently accreting systems. It was recently suggested that previously neglected neutron transfer reactions may play a significant role in the nuclear processes. We present results from full nuclear network calculations that now include these reactions and determine their impact on crust composition, crust impurity, heating, and cooling. We find that a large number of neutron transfer reactions indeed occur and impact crust model…
The study of how neutron stars cool over time can provide invaluable insights into fundamental physics such as the nuclear equation of state and superconductivity and superfluidity. A critical relation in neutron star cooling is the one between observed surface temperature and interior temperature. This relation is determined by the composition of the neutron star envelope and can be influenced by the process of diffusive nuclear burning (DNB). We calculate models of envelopes that include DNB and find that DNB can lead to a rapidly changing envelope composition which can be relevant for under…
Neutron stars cool down during their lifetime through the combination of neutrino emission from the interior and photon cooling from the surface. Strongly magnetised neutron stars, called magnetars, are no exception, but the effect of their strong fields adds further complexities to the cooling theory. Besides other factors, modelling the outermost hundred meters (the envelope) plays a crucial role in predicting their surface temperatures. In this letter, we revisit the influence of envelopes on the cooling properties of neutron stars, with special focus on the critical effects of the magnetic…

We present two recent parametrizations of the equation of state (FSU2R and FSU2H models) that reproduce the properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei, fulfill constraints on high-density matter stemming from heavy-ion collisions, produce 2$M_{\odot}$ neutron stars, and generate neutron star radii below 13 km. Making use of these equations of state, cooling simulations for isolated neutron stars are performed. We find that two of the models studied, FSU2R (with nucleons) and, in particular, FSU2H (with nucleons and hyperons), show very good agreement with cooling observations, even without…
We study thermal evolution of isolated neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories for the first time. Whether the rapid cooling due to the direct Urca process occurs or not is an interesting question in the viewpoint of the temperature observation of isolated neutron stars. Moreover, investigation of the cooling effect of nucleon superfluidity also has the large uncertainties though it is important in modern cooling theory. The cooling effect is typically influenced by the proton fraction and the central density. If a fifth force is mediated due to modification of gravity, the relation between th…
We present a new Chandra observation (performed in July 2016) of the neutron star X-ray transient IGR J17480-2446, located in the globular cluster Terzan 5. We study the continued cooling of the neutron star crust in this system that was heated during the 2010 outburst of the source. This new observation was performed two years after the last observation of IGR J17480-2446, hence, significantly extending the cooling baseline. We reanalysed all available Chandra observations of the source (but excluding observations during which one of the known transients in Terzan 5 was in outburst) and fitte…
The excited-state structure of atomic nuclei can modify nuclear processes in stellar environments. In this work, we study the influence of nuclear excitations on Urca cooling (repeated back-and-forth beta decay and electron capture in a pair of nuclear isotopes) in the crust and ocean of neutron stars. We provide for the first time an expression for Urca process neutrino luminosity which accounts for excited states of both members of an Urca pair. We use our new formula with state-of-the-art nuclear structure inputs to compute neutrino luminosities of candidate Urca cooling pairs. Our nuclear …
We study the thermal evolution of neutron stars described within the equation of state with induced surface tension (IST) that reproduces properties of normal nuclear matter, fulfills the proton flow constraint, provides a high-quality description of hadron multiplicities created during the nuclear-nuclear collision experiments, and it is equally compatible with the constraints from astrophysical observations and the GW170817 event. The model features strong direct Urca processes for the stars above $1.91~M_{\odot}$. The IST equation of state shows very good agreement with the available coolin…
We demonstrate that the existing neutron-star cooling data can be appropriately described within "the nuclear medium cooling scenario" including hyperons under the assumption that different sources have different masses. We use a stiff equation of state of the relativistic mean-field model MKVORH$ϕ$ with hadron effective couplings and masses dependent on the scalar field. It fulfills a large number of experimental constraints on the equation of state of the nuclear matter including the $2\,M_{\odot}$ lower bound for the maximum predicted neutron-star mass and the constraint for the pressure fr…
We study the thermal evolution of axisymmetric rotating neutron stars in full general relativity. To this aim we develop "NSCool 2D Rot", a major upgrade of the 1D neutron stars thermal evolution code "NSCool" by D. Page. As a first application of our new code we address the standard cooling of isolated neutron stars with rotation frequencies up to the mass shedding limit. We investigate the effects of the equation of state (EOS) by considering different combinations of core and crust EOSs. The results indicate complex time-dependent evolution of temperature distribution throughout the whole v…
Analysis of Chandra observations of the neutron star (NS) in the centre of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant taken in the subarray (FAINT) mode of the ACIS detector performed by Posselt and collaborators revealed, after inclusion of the most recent (May 2020) observations, a significant decrease of the source surface temperature from 2006 to 2020. The obtained cooling rate is consistent with those obtained from analysis of the 2000$-$2019 data taken in the GRADED mode of the ACIS detector, which is potentially more strongly affected by instrumental effects. We performed a joint spectral analy…
We studied thermal evolution of isolated neutron stars (NSs) including the pion condensation core, with an emphasis on the stiffness of equation of state (EOS). Many temperature observations can be explained by the minimal cooling scenario which excludes the fast neutrino cooling process. However, several NSs are cold enough to require it. The most crucial problem for NS cooling theory is whether the nucleon direct Urca (DU) process is open. The DU process is forbidden if the nucleon symmetry energy is significantly low. Hence, another fast cooling process is required in such an EOS. As the ca…
The observed rapid cooling of the neutron star (NS) located at the center of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) can be explained in the minimal NS cooling scenario. This consequence may be changed if there exists an extra cooling source, such as axion emission. In this work, we study the Cas A NS cooling in the presence of axion emission, taking account of the temperature evolution in the whole life of the Cas A NS. We obtain a lower limit on the axion decay constant, $f_a\gtrsim (5-7)\times 10^8$ GeV, if the star has an envelope with a thin carbon layer. This is as strong as existing …
