The newly developed two-dimensional layered materials provide perfect platform for valley-spintronics exploration. To determine the prospect of utilizing the valley degree of freedom, it is of great importance to directly detect and understand the valley dynamics in these materials. Here, the exciton valley dynamics in monolayer WSe$_2$ is investigated by the two-color pump-probe magneto-optical Kerr technique. By tuning the probe photon energy in resonance with the free excitons and trions, the valley relaxation time of different excitonic states in monolayer WSe$_2$ is determined. Valley relaxation time of the free exciton in monolayer WSe$_2$ is confirmed to be several picoseconds. A slow valley polarization relaxation process is observed to be associated with the trions, showing that the valley lifetime for trions is one order of magnitude longer than that of free excitons. This finding suggests that trion can be a good candidate for valleytronics application.
We study theoretically interaction of a bilayer graphene with a circularly polarized ultrafast optical pulse of a single oscillation at an oblique incidence. The normal component of the pulse breaks the inversion symmetry of the system and opens up a dynamical band-gap, due to which a valley-selective population of the conduction band becomes sensitive to the angle of incident of the pulse. We show that the magnitude of the valley polarization can be controlled by the angle of incidence, the amplitude, and the angle of in-plane polarization of the chiral optical pulse. Subsequently, a sequence…
The coherent manipulation of spin and pseudospin underlies existing and emerging quantum technologies, including NMR, quantum communication, and quantum computation. Valley polarization, associated with the occupancy of degenerate, but quantum mechanically distinct valleys in momentum space, closely resembles spin polarization and has been proposed as a pseudospin carrier for the future quantum electronics. Valley exciton polarization has been created in the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers using excitation by circularly polarized light and has been detected both optically and…
We propose a practical scheme to generate a pure valley current in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides by one-photon absorption of linearly polarized light. We show that the pure valley current can be detected by either photoluminescence measurements or the ultrafast pump-probe technique. Our method, together with the previously demonstrated generation of valley polarization, opens up the exciting possibility of ultrafast optical-only manipulation of the valley index. The tilted field effect on the valley current in experiment is also discussed.
The optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are dominated by tightly-bound excitons. They form at distinct valleys in reciprocal space, and can interact via the valley-exchange coupling, modifying their dispersion considerably. Here, we predict that angle-resolved photoluminescence can be used to probe the changes of the excitonic dispersion. The exchange-coupling leads to a unique angle dependence of the emission intensity for both circularly and linearly-polarised light. We show that these emission characteristics can be strongly tuned by an external magnetic field d…
We have experimentally studied the pump-probe Kerr rotation dynamics in WSe$_2$ monolayers. This yields a direct measurement of the exciton valley depolarization time $τ_v$. At T=4K, we find $τ_v\approx 6$ps, a fast relaxation time resulting from the strong electron-hole Coulomb exchange interaction in bright excitons. The exciton valley depolarization time decreases significantly when the lattice temperature increases with $τ_v$ being as short as 1.5ps at 125K. The temperature dependence is well explained by the developed theory taking into account the exchange interaction and a fast exciton …
A new degree of freedom, the valley pseudospin, emerges in atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2) and has attracted great scientific interest. The capability to manipulate the valley pseudospin, in analogy to the control of spin in spintronics, can open up exciting opportunities in valleytronics. Here we demonstrate that an ultrafast and ultrahigh valley pseudomagnetic field can be generated using circularly polarized femtosecond pulses to selectively control the valley degree of freedom in monolayer MX2. Employing ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy, we observed …
Optical interband transitions in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides such as WSe2 and MoS2 are governed by chiral selection rules. This allows efficient optical initialization of an electron in a specific K-valley in momentum space. Here we probe the valley dynamics in monolayer WSe2 by monitoring the emission and polarization dynamics of the well separated neutral excitons (bound electron hole pairs) and charged excitons (trions) in photoluminescence. The neutral exciton photoluminescence intensity decay time is about 4ps, whereas the trion emission occurs over several tens of ps. The …
Understanding the ultrafast coupling and relaxation mechanisms between valleys in transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors is of crucial interest for future valleytronic devices. Recent ultrafast pump-probe experiments showed an unintuitive significant bleaching at the excitonic $B$ transition after optical excitation of the energetically lower excitonic $A$ transition. Here, we present a possible microscopic explanation for this surprising effect. It is based on the joint action of exchange coupling and phonon-mediated thermalization into dark exciton states and does not involve a popul…
The two dimensional layered transition metal dichalcogenides provide new opportunities in future valley based information processing and also provide ideal platform to study excitonic effects. At the center of various device physics toward their possible electronic and optoelectronic applications is understanding the dynamical evolution of various many particle electronic states, especially exciton which dominates the optoelectronic response of TMDs, under the novel context of valley degree of freedom. Here, we provide a brief review of experimental advances in using helicity resolved ultrafas…
The valley degree of freedom and the possibility of spin-valley coupling of solid materials have attracted growing interest, and the relaxation dynamics of spin- and valley-polarized states has become an important focus of recent studies. In spin-orbit-coupled inversion-asymmetric two-dimensional materials, such as MoS_{2} it has been found that the spin randomization is characteristically faster than the time scales for inter- and intra-valley scatterings. In this study, we examined the ultrafast non-collinear spin dynamics of an electron valley in monolayer MoS_{2} by using real-time propaga…
Ultrafast measurement technology provides essential contributions to our microscopic understanding of the properties and functions of solids and nanostructures. Atomic-scale vistas with ever-growing spatial and temporal resolution are offered by methods based on short pulses of x-rays and electrons. Time-resolved electron diffraction and microscopy are among the most powerful approaches to investigate non-equilibrium structural dynamics in excited matter. In this article, we discuss recent advances in ultrafast electron imaging enabled by significant improvements in the coherence of pulsed ele…
Increasing the speed limits of conventional electronics requires innovative approaches to manipulate other quantum properties of electrons besides their charge. An alternative approach utilizes the valley degree of freedom in low-dimensional semiconductors. Here we demonstrate that the valley degeneracy of exciton energies in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers may be lifted by coherent optical interactions on timescales corresponding to few tens of femtoseconds. The optical Stark and Bloch-Siegert effects generated by strong nonresonant circularly-polarized light induce valley-selectiv…
Calculations combining first-principles electron-phonon ($e$-ph) interactions with the Boltzmann equation enable studies of ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics. However, in materials with weak Coulomb screening, electrons and holes form bound excitons and their scattering processes become correlated, posing additional challenges for modeling nonequilibrium physics. Here we show calculations of ultrafast exciton dynamics and related time-domain spectroscopies using $ab~initio$ exciton-phonon (ex-ph) interactions together with an excitonic Boltzmann equation. Starting from the nonequilibrium e…
While valleys (energy extrema) are present in all band structures of solids, their preeminent role in determining exciton resonances and dynamics in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) is unique. Using two-dimensional coherent electronic spectroscopy, we find that exciton decoherence occurs on a much faster time scale in MoSe$_2$ bilayers than that in the monolayers. We further identify two population relaxation channels in the bilayer, a coherent and an incoherent one. Our microscopic model reveals that phonon-emission processes facilitate scattering events from the $K$ va…
Charged excitons called trions play an important role in the fundamental valley dynamics in the newly emerging 2D semiconductor materials. We used ultrafast pump- probe spectroscopy to study the valley trion dynamics in a MoSe$_2$ monolayer grown by using chemical vapor deposition. The dynamics display an ultrafast trion formation followed by a non-exponential decay. The measurements at different pump fluences show that the trion decay dynamics become slower as the excitation density increases. The observed trion dynamics and the associated density dependence are a result of the trapping by tw…
The ability to monitor and control distinct states is at the heart of emerging quantum technologies. The valley pseudospin in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers is a promising degree of freedom for such control, with the optical Stark effect allowing for valley-selective manipulation of energy levels in WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ using ultrafast optical pulses. Despite these advances, understanding of valley-sensitive optical Stark shifts in TMDCs has been limited by reflectance-based detection methods where the signal is small and prone to background effects. More sensitive polarizatio…
Layered van-der-Waals materials with hexagonal symmetry offer an extra degree of freedom to their electrons, the so called valley index or valley pseudospin. This quantity behaves conceptually like the electron spin and the term valleytronics has been coined. In this context, the group of semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are particularly appealing, due to large spin-orbit interactions and a direct bandgap at the K points of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. In this work, we present investigations of excitonic transitions in mono- and multilayer WSe$_2$ and MoSe$_2$ materials …
Topological insulators are candidates to open up a novel route in spin based electronics. Different to traditional ferromagnetic materials, where the carrier spin-polarization and magnetization are based on the exchange interaction, the spin properties in topological insulators are based on the coupling of spin- and orbit interaction connected to its momentum. Specific ways to control the spin-polarization with light have been demonstrated: the energy momentum landscape of the Dirac cone provides spin-momentum locking of the charge current and its spin. The directionality of spin and momentum,…
Two-dimensional semiconductors feature valleytronics phenomena due to locking of the spin and momentum valley of the electrons. However, the valley polarization is intrinsically limited in monolayer crystals by the fast intervalley electron-hole exchange. Hetero-bilayer crystals have been shown to have a longer exciton lifetime and valley depolarization time. But the reported valley polarization was low; the valley selection rules and mechanisms of valley depolarization remains controversial. Here, we report singlet and brightened triplet interlayer excitons both with over 80% valley polarizat…
Electron-electron scattering on the order of a few to tens of femtoseconds plays a crucial role in the ultrafast electron dynamics of conventional metals. When mid-infrared light is used for driving and the period of light field is comparable to the scattering time in metals, unique light-driven states and nonlinear optical responses associated with the scattering process are expected to occur. Here, we use high-harmonics spectroscopy to investigate the effect of electron-electron scattering on the electron dynamics in thin film 2H-NbSe$_2$ driven by a mid-infrared field. We observed odd-order…

The emerging field of valleytronics aims to exploit the valley pseudospin of electrons residing near Bloch band extrema as an information carrier. Recent experiments demonstrating optical generation and manipulation of exciton valley coherence (the superposition of electron-hole pairs at opposite valleys) in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a critical step towards control of this quantum degree of freedom. The charged exciton (trion) in TMDs is an intriguing alternative to the neutral exciton for control of valley pseudospin because of its long spontaneous recombinatio…
We use the terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy to study femtosecond photocurrent dynamics in the prototypical 2D semiconductor, transition metal dichalcogenide MoSe$_2$. We identify several distinct mechanisms producing THz radiation in response to an ultrashort ($30\,$fs) optical excitation in a bilayer (BL) and a multilayer (ML) sample. In the ML, the THz radiation is generated at a picosecond timescale by out-of-plane currents due to the drift of photoexcited charge carriers in the surface electric field. The BL emission is generated by an in-plane shift current. Finally, we observe oscil…
Time-resolved x-ray diffraction has been used to measure the low-temperature thermal transport properties of a Pt/Gd3Fe5O12//Gd3Ga5O12 metal/oxide heterostructure relevant to applications in spin caloritronics. A pulsed femtosecond optical signal produces a rapid temperature rise in the Pt layer, followed by heat transport into the Gd3Fe5O12 (GdIG) thin film and the Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) substrate. The time dependence of x-ray diffraction from the GdIG layer was tracked using an accelerator-based femtosecond x-ray source. The ultrafast diffraction measurements probed the intensity of the GdIG (1 -1 …
Fundamental interactions induced by lattice vibrations on ultrafast time scales become increasingly important for modern nanoscience and technology. Experimental access to the physical properties of acoustic phonons in the THz frequency range and over the entire Brillouin zone is crucial for understanding electric and thermal transport in solids and their compounds. Here, we report on the generation and nonlinear propagation of giant (1 percent) acoustic strain pulses in hybrid gold/cobalt bilayer structures probed with ultrafast surface plasmon interferometry. This new technique allows for un…
We investigated the valley depolarization and carrier relaxation process of monolayer and bilayer WS2 at 10 K by using time-resolved Kerr rotation (TRKR) and differential reflectance measurement simultaneously. Two decay processes extracted from TRKR signals were observed on both monolayer and bilayer WS2. In monolayer WS2, the initial ultrafast decay component (less than 1 ps) was interpreted as the stimulated emission or Pauli-blocking of electrons and holes in one valley by comparing with carrier decay process. The relatively slow component was around 4 ps under low excitation energy (less …
Terahertz (THz) spin-to-charge conversion has become an increasingly important process for THz pulse generation and as a tool to probe ultrafast spin interactions at magnetic interfaces. However, its relation to traditional, steady state, ferromagnetic resonance techniques is poorly understood. Here we investigate nanometric trilayers of Co/X/Pt (X=Ti, Au or Au0:85W0:15) as a function of the 'X' layer thickness, where THz emission generated by the inverse spin Hall effect is compared to the Gilbert damping of the ferromagnetic resonance. Through the insertion of the 'X' layer we show that the …
Monolayer valley semiconductors, such as tungsten diselenide (WSe$_2$), possess valley pseudospin degrees of freedom that are optically addressable but degenerate in energy. Lifting the energy degeneracy by breaking time-reversal symmetry is vital for valley manipulation. This has been realized by directly applying magnetic fields or via pseudo-magnetic fields generated by intense circularly polarized optical pulses. However, sweeping large magnetic fields is impractical for devices, and the pseudo-magnetic fields are only effective in the presence of ultrafast laser pulses. The recent rise of…
We monitor the dynamics of hot carriers in InSe by means of two photons photoelectron spectroscopy (2PPE). The electrons excited by photons of 3.12 eV experience a manifold relaxation. First, they thermalize to the electronic states degenerate with the $\bar M$ valley. Subsequently, the electronic cooling is dictated by Fröhlich coupling with phonons of small momentum transfer. Ab-initio calculations predict cooling rates that are in good agreement with the observed dynamics. We argue that electrons accumulating in states degenerate with the $\bar M$ valley could travel through a multilayer fl…
We study the screened dynamics of the nonequilibrium excitonic consensate forming in a bulk WSe$_{2}$ when illuminated by coherent light resonant with the lowest-energy exciton. Intervalley scattering causes electron migration from the optically populated K valley to the conduction band minimum at $Σ$. Due to the electron-hole unbalance at the K point a plasma of quasi-free holes develops, which efficiently screens the interaction of the remaining excitons. We show that this plasma screening causes an ultrafast melting of the nonequilibrium consensate and that during melting coherent excitons …
Non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated systems constitutes a fascinating problem of condensed matter physics with many open questions. Here we investigate the relaxation dynamics of Landau-quantized electron system into spin-valley polarized ground state in a gate-tunable MoSe$_2$ monolayer subjected to a strong magnetic field. The system is driven out of equilibrium with optically injected excitons that depolarize the electron spins and the subsequent electron spin-valley relaxation is probed in time-resolved experiments. We demonstrate that the relaxation rate at millikelvin tempera…
Quantum spin Hall effect was first predicted in graphene. However, the weak spin orbit interaction in graphene meant that the search for quantum spin Hall effect in graphene never fructified. In this work we show how to generate the quantum spin-valley Hall effect in graphene via quantum pumping by adiabatically modulating a magnetic impurity and an electrostatic potential in a monolayer of strained graphene. We see that not only exclusive spin polarized currents can be pumped in the two valleys in exactly opposite directions but one can have pure spin currents flowing in opposite directions i…
Polarization characteristic of ultrafast carrier dynamics in multi-layer CVD-grown graphene is probed with tilted beams (with respected to the graphene plane). The graphene ultrafast carrier dynamics measurement greatly depends on both polarization (i.e., orientation of linear polarization) and wave vector of probe beam. The differential reflectivity ΔR=R signal of picosecond dynamics could be continuously altered from positive to negative by changing the probe polarization from P to S when the dynamics is probed by a total internal reflected beam. The polarization dependent ΔR=R signal around…
Non-collinear spin textures in ferromagnetic ultrathin films are attracting a renewed interest fueled by possible fine engineering of several magnetic interactions, notably the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This allows the stabilization of complex chiral spin textures such as chiral magnetic domain walls (DWs), spin spirals, and magnetic skyrmions. We report here on the ultrafast behavior of chiral DWs after optical pumping in perpendicularly magnetized asymmetric multilayers, probed using time-resolved circular dichroism in x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (CD-XRMS). We obs…
Light-matter interactions in layered materials and heterostructures: from moiré physics and magneto-optical effects to ultrafast dynamics and hybrid meta-photonics
Spintronic structures are extensively investigated for their spin orbit torque properties, required for magnetic commutation functionalities. Current progress in these materials is dependent on the interface engineering for the optimization of spin transmission. Here, we advance the analysis of ultrafast spin-charge conversion phenomena at ferromagnetic-transition metal interfaces due to their inverse spin-Hall effect properties. In particular the intrinsic inverse spin Hall effect of Pt-based systems and extrinsic inverse spin-Hall effect of Au:W and Au:Ta in NiFe/Au:(W,Ta) bilayers are inves…
Transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers are highly interesting for potential valleytronic applications due to the coupling of spin and valley degrees of freedom and valley-selective excitonic transitions. However, ultrafast recombination of excitons in these materials poses a natural limit for applications, so that a transfer of polarization to resident carriers is highly advantageous. Here, we study the low-temperature spin-valley dynamics in nominally undoped and n-doped MoSe$_2$ monolayers using time-resolved Kerr rotation. In the n-doped MoSe$_2$, we find a long-lived component of the K…
Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers have emerged as promising candidates for future valleytronics-based quantum information technologies. Two distinct momentum-states of tightly-bound electron-hole pairs in these materials can be deterministically initialized via irradiation with circularly polarized light. Here, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of such a valley polarization in monolayer tungsten diselenide by means of time-resolved Kerr reflectometry. The observed Kerr signal in our sample stems exclusively from charge-neutral excitons. Our findings support the pict…
