The possibility that there is some Cosmic Polarization Rotation (CPR), i.e. that the polarization angle rotates while a photon travels in vacuum over large distances, is important for at least two reasons: first, the polarization angle seems to be the most steady characteristic of photons and, second, CPR would be associated with violations of fundamental physical principles, like the Einstein Equivalence Principle on which all metric theories of gravity are based, including General Relativity, for which we celebrate the Centennial this year 2015. We review here the astrophysical tests which have been carried out to check if CPR exists. These are using the radio and ultraviolet polarization of radio galaxies and the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (both E-mode and B-mode). These tests so far have been negative, leading to upper limits of a couple of degrees on any CPR angle, thereby increasing our confidence in those physical principles and in the resulting theories, including General Relativity. We discuss future prospects in detecting CPR or improving the constraints on it.
Scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in galaxy clusters induces polarization signals determined by the quadrupole anisotropy in the photon distribution at the location of clusters. This "remote quadrupole" derived from the measurements of the induced polarization in galaxy clusters provides an opportunity of reconstruction of local CMB temperature anisotropies. In this {\em Letter} we develop an algorithm of the reconstruction through the estimation of the underlying primordial gravitational potential, which is the origin of the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuation…
I derive formulas for the real space CMB temperature and polarization by solving the first order Boltzmann equation for the Stokes parameters I, Q and U.
Photon-photon interactions, as described by the standard Heisenberg-Euler interaction, can transform plane polarization of the CMB into circular polarization, in the period right after last scattering. We estimate the standard deviation of the resulting circular polarization parameter, as constrained by confining observations to angular regions of large plane polarization, and find results of the order of $10^{-9}$ for the Stokes parameter $V$.
We forecast how current ({\planck}) and future ({\prism}) cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments constrain the adiabatic mode and its admixtures with primordial isocurvature modes, using measurements of the reconstructed CMB lensing potential and lensing-induced CMB B-mode polarization anisotropies in combination with the CMB temperature and E-mode polarization anisotropies. We first study the characteristic features of the CMB temperature, polarization and lensing spectra for adiabatic and isocurvature modes. We then consider how lensing-induced B-mode polarization and lensing potentia…
Generation of the B-mode of CMB polarization by background of relic gravitational wave is discussed in connection with the BICEP2 measurements. Description of the polarization maps in terms of the eigenvectors of the polarization matrix is considered.
We study the distribution functions of the CMB polarization angle $ψ$, focusing on the Planck 2018 CMB maps. We extend the model of Preece & Battye (2014) of Gaussian correlated $Q$ and $U$ Stokes parameters to allow nonzero means. When the variances of $Q$ and $U$ are equal and their covariance and means are zero, the polarization angle is uniformly distributed. Otherwise the uniform distribution will be modulated by harmonics with $2ψ$ and $4ψ$ phases. These modulations are visible in the Planck 2018 CMB maps. Furthermore, the mean value of $U$ is peculiar compared to the power spectrum.
Impacts of observational systematic errors on the lensing analysis of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization are investigated by numerical simulations. We model errors of gain, angle, and pointing in observation of the CMB polarization and simulate polarization fields modulated by the errors. We discuss the response of systematics-induced $B$-modes to amplitude and spatial scale of the imposed errors and show that the results of the lensing reconstruction and delensing analysis behave according to it. It is observed that error levels expected in the near future lead to no significa…
Future precision measurements of CMB polarizations can shed new light on the problem so called Hubble tension. The Hubble tension comes from the difference of the evolutions of the Hubble parameter which are determined with two different distance ladders. The standard distance ladder with the observation of Cepheid variables and type Ia supernovae gives larger values of the Hubble constant, and the inverse distance ladder with the observation of the baryon acoustic oscillations both in the CMB and in the clustering of galaxies gives smaller values of the Hubble constant. These different evolut…
Searching for the signal of primordial gravitational waves in the B-modes (BB) power spectrum is one of the key scientific aims of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. However, this could be easily contaminated by several foreground issues, such as the thermal dust emission. In this paper we study another mechanism, the cosmic birefringence, which can be introduced by a CPT-violating interaction between CMB photons and an external scalar field. Such kind of interaction could give rise to the rotation of the linear polarization state of CMB photons, and consequently i…
We present a novel mathematical formalism that allows to easily compute the expected kinetic Sunyaev Zeldovich (kSZ) signal in intensity and polarization due to an anisotropic primordial Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We derive the expected intensity and polarization distortions in the direction of non-moving galaxy clusters and then we generalize our calculations for non-zero peculiar velocity. We show that, in the direction of moving clusters, low CMB multipoles impose intensity and polarization spectral distortions with different frequency dependences. The polarization signal primarily …

I propose a model of dipole modulation in Cosmic Background Microwave Radiation (CMBR) polarization fields Q and U. It is shown that the modulation leads to correlations between l and l multipoles where either l = l or l = l \pm 1, but the contribution for the case l = l cancels out after summing over m. We perform a detailed mathematical analysis of the E and B mode correlations and obtain the final result in a closed form.
We study the signatures of local type primordial non-Gaussianity, parametrized by $\fnl$, of scalar perturbations in CMB polarization using the probability distribution functions, Minkowski Functionals and Betti numbers. We show that the lowest order non-Gaussian deviation of the PDF of the total polarization intensity is at order $(\fnlσ)^2$. We calculate the non-Gaussian deviations of Minkowski Functionals and Betti numbers from simulated polarization maps. We find that $E$ mode polarization provides independent and equally strong constraint on $\fnl$ as temperature fluctuations. The non-Gau…
A persistent signal of power asymmetry on opposite hemispheres of CMB sky was seen in full-sky temperature measurements made so far. This asymmetry was seen in microwave sky from WMAP as well as PLANCK satellites, and calls for attention the larger question of \emph{statistical isotropy}, one of the foundational principles of modern cosmology. In this work we present an analysis of polarized CMB maps from PLANCK 2015 full mission data. We apply the local variance estimator on low resolution $E-$mode maps from PLANCK 2015 polarization \texttt{Commander} solution. We find a significant hemispher…
The circular polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is usually taken to be zero since it is not generated by Thomson scattering. Here we explore the actual level of circular polarization in the CMB generated by conventional cosmological sources of birefringence. We consider two classes of mechanisms for birefringence. One is alignment of the matter to produce an anisotropic susceptibility tensor: the hydrogen spins can be aligned either by density perturbations or CMB anisotropies themselves. The other is anisotropy of the radiation field coupled to the non-linear response of th…
Cosmological birefringence is a rotation of the polarization plane of photons coming from sources of astrophysical and cosmological origin. The rotation can also depend on the energy of the photons and not only on the distance of the source and on the cosmological evolution of the underlying theoretical model. In this work, we constrain few selected models for cosmological birefringence, combining CMB and astrophysical data at radio, optical, X and gamma wavelengths, taking into account the specific energy and distance dependences.
We introduce a pixel space method to detect dipole modulation or hemispherical power asymmetry in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization. The method relies on the use of squared total polarized flux whose ensemble average picks up a dipole due to the dipole modulation in the CMB polarization. The method is useful since it can be applied easily to partial sky. We define several statistics to characterize the amplitude of the detected signal. By simulations we show that the method can be used to reliably extract the signal at 2.7$σ$ level or higher in future CORE-like missions, assum…
Recent progress in high sensitivity Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization experiments opens up a window on large scale structure (LSS), as CMB polarization fluctuations on small angular scales can arise from a combination of LSS and ionization fluctuations in the late universe. Gravitational lensing effects can be extracted from CMB datasets with quadratic estimators but reconstructions of electron density fluctuations (EDFs) with quadratic estimators are found to be significantly biased by the much larger lensing effects in the secondary CMB fluctuations. In this paper we establish a…
Multi-frequency observations are needed to separate the CMB from foregrounds and accurately extract cosmological information from the data. The Analytical Blind Separation (ABS) method is dedicated to extracting the CMB power spectrum from multi-frequency observations in the presence of contamination from astrophysical foreground emission and instrumental noise. In this study, we apply the ABS method to simulated sky maps as could be observed with a future space-borne survey, in order to test the method's capability for determining the CMB polarization $E$- and $B$-mode power spectra. We prese…
Extragalactic foregrounds are known to generate significant biases in temperature-based CMB lensing reconstruction. Several techniques, which include ``source hardening'' and ``shear-only estimators'' have been proposed to mitigate contamination and have been shown to be very effective at reducing foreground-induced biases. Here we extend both techniques to polarization, which will be an essential component of CMB lensing reconstruction for future experiments, and investigate the ``large-lens'' limit analytically to gain insight on the origin and scaling of foreground biases, as well as the se…
We study a strategy to determine miscalibrated polarization angles of cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments using the observed $EB$ polarization power spectra of CMB and Galactic foreground emission. We apply the methodology of Minami et al.(2019) developed for full-sky observations to ground-based experiments such as Simons Observatory. We take into account the $E$-to-$B$ leakage and $\ell$-to-$\ell$ covariance due to partial sky coverage using the public code NaMaster. We show that our method yields an unbiased estimate of miscalibrated angles. Our method also enables simultaneous de…
In this paper we estimate diffuse foreground minimized Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Stokes Q and U polarization maps based upon the fundamental concept of Gaussian nature of CMB and strong non-Gaussian nature of astrophysical polarized foregrounds using WMAP nine year published polarization maps. We excise regions of the sky that define position of the known point sources, regions that are strongly contaminated by either the detector noise or by the diffuse foregrounds or both, and then perform foreground minimizations over the surviving sky regions that constitute approximately $50\%$ of…
Compensated isocurvature perturbations are opposite spatial fluctuations in the baryon and dark matter (DM) densities. They arise in the curvaton model and some models of baryogenesis. While the gravitational effects of baryon fluctuations are compensated by those of DM, leaving no observable impacts on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at first order, they modulate the sound horizon at recombination, thereby correlating CMB anisotropies at different multipoles. As a result, CIPs can be reconstructed using quadratic estimators similarly to CMB detection of gravitational lensing. Because of…
The anisotropy study cosmic microwave background (CMB) is one of the main observational tools for modern cosmology. However, alongside the study of the thermal fluctuations of the CMB are other equally important information, which is known as the polarization of the CMB. The inflationary model predicts that the CMB is linearly polarized and the physical mechanism of this polarization is studied from the Thompson scattering, the dominant process on the surface of last scattering. There are basically two types of polarization called E and B modes, the first produced by scalar perturbations and t…
In this work we consider non-zero circular polarization for the CMB radiation as a result of new interactions. We then rewrite the Boltzmann equations for the Stokes parameters $Q$, $U$ and $V$ and show that the circular polarization can generate the B-mode polarization even if no tensor perturbations are present.
We consider a novel null test for contamination which can be applied to CMB polarization data that involves analysis of the statistics of the polarization position angles. Specifically, we will concentrate on using histograms of the measured position angles to illustrate the idea. Such a test has been used to identify systematics in the NVSS point source catalogue with an amplitude well below the noise level. We explore the statistical properties of polarization angles in CMB maps. If the polarization angle is not correlated between pixels, then the errors follow a simple $\sqrt{N_{pix}}$ law.…
We investigate how much the ratio of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization power spectra $C^{BB}_\ell/C^{EE}_\ell$ at low-$\ell$ ($\ell \lesssim 10$) depends on the process of reionization. Both such low-$\ell$ B-mode and E-mode polarization powers are dominantly produced by Thomson scattering of CMB photons off the free electrons which are produced in the process of reionization. Since the reionization should be finished until at least the redshift $z \simeq 6$ and the low-$\ell$ polarization powers are produced at late time, the ratio is rather insensitive by the ionization process …
We demonstrate that the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature-polarization cross-correlation provides accurate and robust constraints on cosmological parameters. We compare them with the results from temperature or polarization and investigate the impact of foregrounds, cosmic variance, and instrumental noise. This analysis makes use of the Planck high-multipole HiLLiPOP likelihood based on angular power spectra, which takes into account systematics from the instrument and foreground residuals directly modelled using Planck measurements. The temperature-polarization correlation (TE) sp…
Accurate cosmological parameter estimates using polarization data of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) put stringent requirements on map calibration, as highlighted in the recent results from the Planck satellite. In this paper, we point out that a model-dependent determination of polarization calibration can be achieved by the joint fit of the TE and EE CMB power spectra. This provides a valuable cross-check to band-averaged polarization efficiency measurements determined using other approaches. We demonstrate that, in $Λ$CDM, the combination of the TE and EE constrain polarization calibr…
We study the signal from patchy reionization in view of the future high accuracy polarization measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We implement an extraction procedure of the patchy reionization signal analogous to CMB lensing. We evaluate the signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the future Stage IV (S4) CMB experiment. The signal has a broad peak centered on the degree angular scales, with a long tail at higher multipoles. The CMB S4 experiment can effectively constrain the properties of reionization by measuring the signal on degree scales. The signal amplitude depends on the pr…
Cosmic Birefringence (CB) is the in-vacuo rotation of the linear polarization direction of photons during propagation, caused by parity-violating extensions of Maxwell electromagnetism. We build low resolution CB angle maps using Planck Legacy and NPIPE products and provide for the first time estimates of the cross-correlation spectra $C_L^{αE}$ and $C_L^{αB}$ between the CB and the CMB polarization fields. We also provide updated CB auto-correlation spectra $C_L^{αα}$ as well as the cross-correlation $C_L^{αT}$ with the CMB temperature field. We report constraints by defining the scale-invari…
The detection of the magnetic type $B$-mode polarization is the main goal of future cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. In the standard model, the $B$-mode map is a strongly non-gaussian field due to the lensed component. Besides the two-point correlation function, the other statistics are also very important to dig the information of the polarization map. In this paper, we employ the Minkowski functionals to study the morphological properties of the lensed $B$-mode maps. We find that the deviations from Gaussianity are very significant for both full and partial-sky surveys. As an a…
We present a novel formalism to describe the $in$ $vacuo$ conversion between polarization states of propagating radiation, also known as generalized Faraday effect (GFE), in a cosmological context. Thinking of GFE as a potential tracer of new, isotropy- and/or parity-violating physics, we apply our formalism to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarized anisotropy power spectra, providing a simple framework to easily compute their observed modifications. In so doing, we re-interpret previously known results, namely the $in$ $vacuo$ rotation of the linear polarization plane of CMB photons …
We present an optimization scheme for the focal plane of a multi-frequency CMB B-modes experiment with a fixed number of detectors and apply it to the specific case of LSPE experiment. Optimal focal planes are identified on the ground of different figures of merit defined in terms of the forecasted uncertainty $σ_r$ on the tensor--to-scalar ratio $r$ and the expected map variance from foreground and instrumental noise residuals. We then perform a forecast analysis in order to assess the precision achievable in B-modes measurements.
While it is revealed that the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is linearly polarized at 10 % level, it is predicted that there exists no significant intrinsic source for circular polarization (CP) in the standard cosmology. However, during the propagation through a magnetised plasma, the CP of the CMB could be produced via the Faraday conversion (FC). The FC converts a pre-existing linear polarization into CP in presence of a magnetic field with relativistic electrons. In this paper, we focus on the FC due to supernova remnants of the first stars, also called Pop III stars. We derive an analy…
We present a theoretical study of CMB temperature peaks, including its effect over the polarization field, and allowing nonzero eccentricity. The formalism is developed in harmonic space and using the covariant derivative on the sphere, which guarantees that the expressions obtained are completely valid at large scales (i.e., no flat approximation). The expected patterns induced by the peak, either in temperature or polarization, are calculated, as well as their covariances. It is found that the eccentricity introduces a quadrupolar dependence in the peak shape, which is proportional to a comp…
The contribution of one loop milli-charged fermion vacuum polarization in cosmic magnetic field to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization is considered. Exact and perturbative solution of the density matrix equations of motion in terms of the Stokes parameters are presented. For linearly polarized CMB at decoupling time, it is shown that propagation of CMB photons in cosmic magnetic field would generate elliptic polarization (circular and linear) of the CMB due to milli-charged fermion vacuum polarization. Analytic expressions for the degree of circular polarization and rotation an…
Standard models describing the radiation transfer of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) through Compton scattering predict that cosmological scalar perturbations at linear order are not able to source V and B polarization modes. In this work, we investigate the possibility that such CMB polarization modes are generated even in the presence of linear scalar perturbations only. We provide a general parametrization of the photon-fermion forward-scattering amplitude and compute mixing terms between different CMB polarization modes. We discuss different general extensions of Standard Model inter…
We evaluate the degradation of the accuracy of the component separation between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and foreground components caused by neglect of absorption of the monopole component of the CMB by the galactic interstellar matter. The amplitude of the temperature anisotropy caused by the CMB shadow, due to dust components, is about 1 uK. This value is comparable to the required noise level necessary to probe non-Gaussianity studies with upcoming CMB experiments. In addition, the amplitude of the polarization caused by the CMB shadow due to dust is comparable to or larger tha…
