This article gives a first look at wild ramification in a family of iterated extensions. For integer values of c, we consider the splitting field of $(x^2 + c)^2 + c$, the second iterate of $x^2 + c$. We give complete information on the factorization of the ideal (2) as c varies, and find a surprisingly complicated dependence of this factorization on the parameter c. We show that 2 ramifies (necessarily wildly) in all these extensions except when c = 0, and we describe the higher ramification groups in some totally ramified cases.
We compute the inertia group of the compositum of wildly ramified Galois covers. It is used to show that even the $p$-part of the inertia group of a Galois cover of $\PP^1$ branched only at infinity can be reduced if there is a jump in the ramification filtration at two (in the lower numbering) and certain linear disjointness statement holds.
Quaternion extensions are often the smallest extensions to exhibit special properties. In the setting of the Hasse-Arf Theorem, for instance, quaternion extensions are used to illustrate the fact that upper ramification numbers need not be integers. These extensions play a similar role in Galois module structure. To better understand these examples, we catalog the ramification filtrations that are possible in totally ramified extensions of dyadic number fields. Interestingly, we find that the catalog depends, for sharp lower bounds, upon the refined ramification filtration, which is associated…
We consider p-extensions of number fields such that the filtration of the Galois group by higher ramification groups is of prescribed finite length. We extend well-known properties of tame extensions to this more general setting; for instance, we show that these towers, when infinite, are ``asymptotically good'' (an explicit bound for the root discriminant is given). We study the difficult problem of bounding the relation-rank of the Galois groups in question. Results of Gordeev and Wingberg imply that the relation-rank can tend to infinity when the set of ramified primes is fixed but the leng…
The \(v\)-function appears in the wild McKay correspondence and it is an invariant of a Galois extension over a local field which measures about the ramification of extension. The ramification filtration is also such invariant. Yasuda presented the problem whether the \(v\)-function is determined by ramification filtration. In this paper, we give a formula for the \(v\)-function for 2-dimensional representations of the bicyclic group of order \(p^2\) with \(p\) the characteristic of our base field. Using this formula, we construct an example of \(v\)-function not determined by the ramification…
In this article, we give a bound for the wild ramification of the monodromy action on the nearby cycles complex of a locally constant étale sheaf on the generic fiber of a smooth scheme over an equal characteristic trait in terms of Abbes and Saito's logarithmic ramification filtration. This provides a positive answer to the main conjecture in Isabel Leal's article "On the ramification of étale cohomology groups" for smooth morphisms in equal characteristic. We also study the ramification along vertical divisors of étale sheaves on relative curves and abelian schemes over a trait.
A generalization of Serre's Conjecture asserts that if $F$ is a totally real field, then certain characteristic $p$ representations of Galois groups over $F$ arise from Hilbert modular forms. Moreover it predicts the set of weights of such forms in terms of the local behavior of the Galois representation at primes over $p$. This characterization of the weights, which is formulated using $p$-adic Hodge theory, is known under mild technical hypotheses if $p > 2$. In this paper we give, under the assumption that $p$ is unramified in $F$, a conjectural alternative description for the set of weight…
Consider tuples of separable algebras over a common local or global number field, related to each other by specified resolvent constructions. Under the assumption that all ramification is tame, simple group-theoretic calculations give best possible divisibility relations among the discriminants. We show that for many resolvent constructions, these divisibility relations continue to hold even in the presence of wild ramification.
Given a branched cover $f:Y\to X$ between smooth projective curves over a non-archimedian mixed-characteristic local field and an open rigid disk $D\subset X$, we study the question under which conditions the inverse image $f^{-1}(D)$ is again an open disk. More generally, if the cover $f$ varies in an analytic family, is this true at least for some member of the family? Our main result gives a criterion for this to happen.
We compute the ramification filtration on wildly ramified $p^2$-cyclic extensions of local fields of characteristic $p$. The ramification filtration on the compositum of two $p$-cyclic and $p^2$-cyclic extensions are also computed. As an application, some partial results towards Abhyankar's Inertia conjecture has been proved.
We develop a new approach to construction of numerical invariants for ramified coverings of algebraic surfaces of prime characteristic. Let A be a two-dimensional regular local ring of prime characteristic p with algebraically closed residue field. Let L/K be a solvable finite Galois extension of its fraction field. Let C be a germ of a regular curve on the spectrum of A which is not a component of the ramification divisor R. Then L/K determines (up to conjugation) an extension of the function filed of C. This is an extension of discrete valuation fields with algebaically closed residue fields…
Suppose G is a semi-direct product of the form Z/p^n \rtimes Z/m where p is prime and m is relatively prime to p. Suppose K is a local field of characteristic p > 0. The main result states necessary and sufficient conditions on the ramification filtrations that occur for wildly ramified G-Galois extensions of K. In addition, we prove that there exists a parameter space for G-Galois extensions of K with given ramification filtration whose dimension depends only on the ramification filtration. We provide explicit equations for wild cyclic extensions of K of degree p^3.
Usually the boundary map in K-theory localization only gives the tame symbol at $K_{2}$. It sees the tamely ramified part of the Hilbert symbol, but no wild ramification. Gillet has shown how to prove Weil reciprocity using such boundary maps. This implies Hilbert reciprocity for curves over finite fields. However, phrasing Hilbert reciprocity for number fields in a similar way fails because it crucially hinges on wild ramification effects. We resolve this issue, except at p=2. Our idea is to pinch singularities near the ramification locus. This fattens up K-theory and makes the wild symbol vi…
Let us consider an abelian variety defined over $\mathbb{Q_{\ell}}$ with good supersingular reduction. In this paper we give explicit conditions that ensure that the action of the wild inertia group on the $\ell$-torsion points of the variety is trivial. Furthermore we give a family of curves of genus 2 such that their Jacobian surfaces have good supersingular reduction and satisfy these conditions. We address this question by means of a detailed study of the formal group law attached to abelian varieties.
Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a finite set of places of $K$. We study the kernels $\Sha_S$ of maps $H^2(G_S,\fq_p) \rightarrow \oplus_{v\in S} H^2(\G_v,\fq_p)$. There is a natural injection $\Sha_S \hookrightarrow \CyB_S$, into the dual $\CyB_S$ of a certain readily computable Kummer group $V_S$, which is always an isomorphism in the wild case. The tame case is much more mysterious. Our main result is that given a finite $X$ coprime to $p$, there exists a finite set of places $S$ coprime to $p$ such that $\Sha_{S\cup X} \stackrel{\simeq}{\hookrightarrow} \CyB_{S\cup X} \stackrel{\simeq}{\t…
We define generalizations of classical invariants of wild ramification for coverings on a variety of arbitrary dimension over a local field. For an l-adic sheaf, we define its Swan class as a 0-cycle class supported on the wild ramification locus. We prove a formula of Riemann-Roch type for the Swan conductor of cohomology together with its relative version, assuming that the local field is of mixed characteristic. We also prove the integrality of the Swan class for curves over a local field as a generalization of the Hasse-Arf theorem. We derive a proof of a conjecture of Serre on the Artin c…
We give an intrinsic parametrisation of the set of tamely ramified extensions of a local field with finite residue field and bring to the fore the role played by group cohomology. We show that two natural definitions of the cohomology class of a tamely ramified finite galoisian extension coincide, and can be recovered from the parameter. We also give an elementary proof of Serre's mass formula in the tame case and in the simplest wild case, and we classify tame galoisian extensions of degree the cube of a prime.
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field with residue class field $k$, where both are of positive characteristic $p$. Then the group of wild automorphisms of $K$ can be identified with the group under composition of formal power series over $k$ with no constant term and $X$-coefficient $1$. Under the hypothesis that $p > b^2$, we compute the first nontrivial coefficient of the $p$th iterate of a power series over $k$ of the form $f = X + \sum_{i \geq 1} a_iX^{b+i}$. As a result, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for an automorphism to be ``$b$-ramified,'' having lower ramifi…
The refined Swan conductor is defined by K.\ Kato \cite{KK2}, and generalized by T.\ Saito \cite{wild}. In this part, we consider some smooth $l$-adic étale sheaves of rank $p$ such that we can be define the $rsw$ following T.\ Saito, on some smooth dense open subscheme $U$ of a smooth separated scheme X of finite type over a perfect fields $κ$ of characteristic $p>0$. We give an explicit expression of $rsw(\mathcal{F})$ in some situation. As a consequence, we show that it is integral.
If K_0 is the fraction field of the Witt vectors over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p, we calculate upper bounds on the conductor of higher ramification for (the Galois closure of) extensions K_0(zeta_{p^r}, sqrt[p^r]{a})/K_0, where a is in K_0(zeta_{p^r}). Here zeta_{p^r} is a primitive p^r-th root of unity. In certain cases, including when a is in K_0 and p=2, we calculate the conductor exactly. These calculations can be used to determine the discriminants of various extensions of Q obtained by adjoining roots of unity and radicals.
A weak wild arithmetic quotient singularity arises from the quotient of a smooth arithmetic surface by a finite group action, where the inertia group of a point on a closed characteristic p fiber is a p-group acting with smallest possible ramification jump. In this paper, we give complete explicit resolutions of these singularities using deformation theory and valuation theory, taking a more local perspective than previous work has taken. Our descriptions answer several questions of Lorenzini. Along the way, we give a valuation-theoretic criterion for a normal snc-model of P^1 over a discretel…
Let $p\neq2$ be a prime. We show a technique based on local class field theory and on the expansions of certain resultants which allows to recover very easily Lbekkouri's characterization of Eisenstein polynomials generating cyclic wild extensions of degree $p^2$ over $\Q_p$, and to extend it to the case of the base field $K$ being an unramified extension of $\Q_p$. Furthermore, when a polynomial satisfies only some of the stated conditions, we show that the first unsatisfied condition gives information about the Galois group of the normal closure. This permits to give a complete classificatio…
