We present and compare different versions of a simple particle pump-model that describes average directed current of repulsively interacting particles in a narrow channel, due to time-varying local potentials. We analyze the model on discrete lattice with particle exclusion, using three choices of potential-dependent hopping rates that obey microscopic reversibility. Treating the strength of the external potential as a small parameter with respect to thermal energy, we present a perturbative calculation to obtain the expression for average directed current. This depends on driving frequency, phase, and particle density. The directed current vanishes as density goes to zero or close packing. For two choices of hopping rates, it reaches maximum at intermediate densities, while for a third choice, it shows a curious current reversal with increasing density. This can be interpreted in terms of a particle-hole symmetry. Stochastic simulations of the model show good agreement with our analytic predictions.
We present the stochastic thermodynamic analysis of a time-periodic single particle pump, including explicit results for flux, thermodynamic force, entropy production, work, heat and efficiency. These results are valid far from equilibrium. The deviations from the linear (Onsager) regime are discussed.
We show that current fluctuations in a stochastic pump can be robustly mapped to fluctuations in a corresponding time-independent nonequilibrium steady state. We thus refine a recently proposed mapping so that it ensures equivalence of not only the averages, but also optimal representation of fluctuations in currents and density. Our mapping leads to a natural decomposition of the entropy production in stochastic pumps similar to the "housekeeping" heat. As a consequence of the decomposition of entropy production, the current fluctuations in weakly perturbed stochastic pumps are shown to satis…
Adiabatic pumping is characterized by a geometric contribution to the pumped charge, which can be non-zero even in the absence of a bias. However, as the driving speed is increased, non-adiabatic excitations gradually reduce the pumped charge, thereby limiting the maximal applicable driving frequencies. To circumvent this problem, we here extend the concept of shortcuts to adiabaticity to construct a control protocol which enables geometric pumping well beyond the adiabatic regime. Our protocol allows for an increase, by more than an order of magnitude, in the driving frequencies, and the meth…
Directed update for the Stochastic Green Function algorithm
We extend the speed limit of a distance between two states evolving by different generators for quantum systems [K. Suzuki and K. Takahashi, Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 032016(R) (2020)] to the classical stochastic processes described by the master equation. We demonstrate that the trace distance between arbitrary evolving states is bounded from above by using a geometrical metric. The geometrical bound reduces to the Fisher information metric for the distance between the time-evolved state and the initial state. We compare the bound in relaxation and annealing processes with a different type of bound …
We study the problem of identifying macroscopic structures in networks, characterizing the impact of introducing link directions on the detectability phase transition. To this end, building on the stochastic block model, we construct a class of hardly detectable directed networks. We find closed form solutions by using belief propagation method showing how the transition line depends on the assortativity and the asymmetry of the network. Finally, we numerically identify the existence of a hard phase for detection close to the transition point.
Directed Percolation (DP) is a classic model for nonequilibrium phase transitions into a single absorbing state (fixation). It has been extensively studied by analytical and numerical techniques in diverse contexts. Recently, DP has appeared as a generic model for the evolutionary/ecological dynamics of competing bacterial populations. Range expansion -- the stochastic reproduction of bacteria competing for space to be occupied by their progeny -- leads to a fluctuating and rough growth front, which is known from experiment and simulation to affect the underlying critical behavior of the DP tr…
The investigation of optimal processes has a long history in the field of thermodynamics. It is well known that finite-time processes that minimize dissipation often exhibit discontinuities. We use a combination of numerical and analytical approaches to study the driving cycle that maximizes the output in a simple model of a stochastic pump: a system driven out of equilibrium by a cyclic variation of external parameters. We find that this optimal solution is singular, with an infinite rate of switching between sets of parameters. The appearance of such singular solutions in thermodynamic proce…
In natural foraging, many organisms seem to perform two different types of motile search: directed search (taxis) and random search. The former is observed when the environment provides cues to guide motion towards a target. The latter involves no apparent memory or information processing and can be mathematically modeled by random walks. We show that both types of search can be generated by a common mechanism in which Lévy flights or Lévy walks emerge from a second-order gradient-based search with noisy observations. No explicit switching mechanism is required -- instead, continuous transitio…
Nonreversible Markov chains can outperform reversible chains in the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. Lifting is a versatile approach to introducing net stochastic flow in state space and constructing a nonreversible Markov chain. We present here an application of the lifting technique to the directed-worm algorithm. The transition probability of the worm update is optimized using the geometric allocation approach; the worm backscattering probability is minimized, and the stochastic flow breaking the detailed balance is maximized. We demonstrate the performance improvement over the previous wor…
